A bu Garcia has a rod that is branded, well it is 

an Abu Garcia rod. But the good news is that it 

does not cost a bomb. It does not even cost a tiny 

bomb. It is certainly pocket safe and may cause 

some “accidental” purchases.

Looks Wise 

Some big brands tend to undermine the looks 

of their lower budget level products giving them 

the “lower budget” looks, but Abu Garcia has 

certainly not done that. In fact they made the 

new BlackMax look good. It looks sporty and 

smart.

How Does It Feel? 

The BlackMax rod is one of those rods that you 

would pick up, give it a feel, subconsciously price, 

and then take a look at the price tag and go; 

“what the @*#*?” “I am buying it.” While it does 

not feel like a high-end rod it certainly does not 

feel “cheap.” It feels like a solid performer; full of 

power. It is one of those rods that many will find 

an excuse to buy.

No Frills Rod 

How Abu Garcia made an affordable yet high 

performance rod is by using a good core and 

shaving the cost off the others. The BlackMax 

rod comes with a good 24 ton graphite blank 

that has lots of power and good backbone. They 

shaved on the components. They use non branded 

high quality stainless guides with Titanium 

oxide inserts (rings) and graphite reel seats.

This allows one to take one’s time should one feel 

a need to mod the rod exchanging the components 

for branded ones say by Fuji. With a good 

core one has the option to build on it.

The BlackMax rod is a good caster especially on 

weightier baits. We get very good casting distances. 

It is when the monsters take the bait the 

BlackMax truly shines. It has lots of recoil power 

managing every fight really well. It has power to 

turn the heads of the monsters we were fighting 

without any loss of power; an attribute of a good 

strong backbone.

power.

Verdict 

While the Abu Garcia BlackMax may be priced 

at the lower end of its range, it certainly feels 

like a higher end rod. It fights very well and it 

exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a 

drop in power after bending past a certain level 

but the BlackMax held its head up and fought 

on. Very good value for the price.

Abu Garcia’s New Weapon 

As anglers we consider ourselves sports people 

too. Fishing is after all a sport where men and 

women hunt down fish and try to catch them. With 

that in mind many an angler prefer their tools to be 

sporty, good looking, lightweight, and tough. Fishing 

tackle brands know that too and have since 

include materials and designs that are sporty, 

light, and tough into their products such as carbon 

graphite, carbon fibres, high grade stainless steel,

The new Abu Garcia Oceanfield Jigging rod series are 

a series of jigging rods designed by Abu Garcia’s team

The Oceanfield comes equiped with quality components

I f you are an angler that fish a lot of soft baits, 

swimbaits, etc. do checkout the Ichikawa B.S.P 

hooks. These offset designed hooks are great 

for these type of fishing. They come with a longeyed 

offset area that reduces tearing of soft 

plastic baits.

These hooks hold the soft plastic baits in place 

when casting holding them is position. With the 

hook point hidden within the soft plastic baits, the 

baits become weedless. The points are really sharp 

too and with PTFE coating, become very effective 

with hook ups. PTFE coating makes the surface of

The B.S.P hooks came about after extensive research 

and testing. These hooks have been factory

I personally find the Abu Garcia Silver Max spinning reel 

to be a good performer. It also does not burn a hole in 

one’s pocket. Definitely a good reel for ultra light fishing. 

I foresee more fun to come.

B eaches are a lovely place to go to for a holiday. 

I enjoy going to beaches as there are so 

many things that one can do at the beach. Recently 

my travelling wanderlust brought me to the 

East Coast of the Malaysian peninsular, to a place 

called Kuantan in the state of Pahang.

A Coastal Capital City 

Kuantan is the capital city of Pahang and it sits by 

the coast with a few popular beaches that has been 

attracting visitors to the state. One of them is Balok 

Beach and it is here that one will find Swiss-Garden 

Beach Resort Kuantan; the largest resort in said 

area.

Classic Charm 

The Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Kuantan has been 

around for many years. One can tell from the architecture 

that it has been standing there for a long 

time. This classic charm has in recent years gone 

through some refurbishing and it looks good with 

nice water feature in the lobby, modern facade at 

its restaurants, and nicely decorated rooms.

Spacious Rooms

The rooms at the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Kuantan 

are spacious with some overlooking the beach 

and some the greens. There are six room categories 

here and they are Deluxe Room, Executive Deluxe 

Room, Premier Deluxe Room, Studio Room, Family 

Room, and the Executive Suite.

We stayed at the Executive Suite which is large at 

72 square metres. The Executive Suite is cosy with 

warm lights, and nice with tall ceilings. It has a living 

area with lots of space, a large bedroom, and a 

bathroom with a Jacuzzi. The king size bed is comfortable 

and certainly provides for good sleep.

Filling one’s tummy is not an issue here. There are 

five outlets where one can go and have their fill. 

There is the Garden Terrace, The Blossom Chinese 

Restaurant, Swiss-Deli that serves snacks and pastries, 

Parrot Bar that is located at the beach, and 

Malibu Pub.

The Garden Terrace 

We had our breakfast at the Garden Terrace where 

buffet breakfast is served. The spread here is a mixture 

of local and western cuisine. One has a choice 

of either dining outdoors or in the air-conditioned 

area. We opted for the air-conditioned area.

Nasi lemak (fragrant rice served with chili paste 

and other side dishes), congee, pancakes, waffles, 

bread, eggs, chipotle, and bacon seems to be the 

daily staple here together with fruits and pies for 

dessert. It is best to come early as it gets really 

packed as more guests come for breakfast.

The other restaurant we dined at is The Blossom 

Chinese Restaurant. This restaurant serves halal 

Chinese cuisine and is famous for their dim sum 

especially amongst the locals that crowed the place 

during the weekends.

tamarind prawn dish, tasty Kung Pao squid, Szechuan 

beef dish, and lovely sweet and sour fish fillets.

are large in size and they are fresh.

Fun Activities 

There are quite a lot of things to do should one decide 

to not spend one’s entire holiday at the beach. 

At the beach one can opt for archery, beach soccer, 

volleyball, soap bubble blowing, rabbit petting, 

etc. One can bring kites too to fly at the beach.

Other outdoor activities include a swimming pool 

and tennis courts. Tennis lessons are provided 

should one want to learn tennis.

Indoor Activities 

For kids there is the Tupai Kid’s Club where kids 

can go have fun in a safe environment. There is 

a slide, plastic seesaws, traditional games, video 

games (Nintendo Wii), batik painting, etc. to keep 

children entertained. 

As for the older kids there are game machines (arcade 

games), pool tables, foosball table, etc. Those 

who enjoy table tennis can do so too as it is available 

here. There is a gym beside the Tupai Kid’s 

Club for those who adhere to a strict fitness regime 

and must workout even when on holidays.

Relaxing At The Spa 

After walking about, visiting the sites, and playing 

on the beach, a massage will be nice to help calm 

one’s body, mind, and soul. This can be done at the

Bit For Anglers 

Anglers will certainly want to spend some time casting 

their baits and lures with hopes of catching a 

fish or two. One can fish from the hotel’s beach but 

just a short drive away are a few sweet spots. One 

of them is the Black Stone Beach. Local anglers 

tend to fish here.

Another place to fish at is around and about the 

waterways of Balok Beach. Children can be seen 

fishing along them. Pay closer attention and one 

will be able to see fishes too. Ultralight tackle recommended 

for increased levels of fun.

Enjoyable Stay

The Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Kuantan is certainly 

a nice place to stay at. It is near some attractions 

such as the Natural Batik Village, Black 

Stone Beach, and a little further will bring you to 

Teluk Cempedak Beach, Cherating Beach, Cherating 

Turtle Sanctuary, and even a Mini Zoo.

I love eating and one of the things I always lookout 

for during my travels is food or rather food places. 

Kuantan is known for seafood and sea produce being 

a coastal city. One place to dine is is Sara Thai 

Kitchen; especially is one is staying at the Balok 

Beach area. Sara Thai is famous for its authentic 

Thai cuisine and grilled fish.

Delicious Tom Yam 

The tom yam here is really good. I personally find it to 

be really tasty being sweet and sour enough to pack a 

punch. It’s level of spiciness is somewhere in the middle 

(manageable) and not too spicy (to me personally). The 

meat used in this dish include squid, prawns, and fish; 

come fresh.

Simple Yet Delicious 

The veggie dish that tasted really good too although it is 

a simple dish. I ordered water spinach stir fried in oyster 

sauce. It was cooked just right with a just enough sweetness 

and saltiness. The gravy certainly did justice.

Delightful Grilled Fish 

But the best dish of all is the grilled fish. We had barramundi 

grilled with chili paste and condiments. The barramundi 

served here is fresh, perhaps caught not too many 

hours ago. One thing though is the waiting time. We had 

finished the Thai part of our dinner and had to wait longer 

for the fish to arrive. 

^ Hidden somewhere within the gravy is a fish. I swear.

Must Try 

Should you be staying around the Balok Beach area, make 

your way to Sara Thai Kitchen. It certainly is a place I 

highly recommend especially if you are looking for grilled 

fish and Thai cuisine. Prices here are reasonable too.

The ambience here is good too having been designed 

to look like a mid-end restaurant. The best 

thing is their prices of which are at very reasonable 

levels. Do go early as it gets crowded after 7.30pm.
