MISSISSAUGA: Ontario
finance minister Charles Sousa
has justified hike in minimum
wages and promised to lower
auto insurance rates in the 905
region.
In an interview with Parvasi
Radio, the minister admitted
that auto insurance rates in
the 905 region were still very
high despite many changes and
promised restructuring to lower
premiums.
Speaking about the reduction
in corporate tax that kicks in
from January, Sousa said the
Liberal government wants
Loblaw launching home
delivery, closing 22 stores
to support small businesses
because "they are the ones who
are hiring.’’
He said the net new 800,000
jobs in Ontario since the
recession have primarily been
Striking teachers reject
offer, strike to continue
created by private businesses.
The government has lowered
taxes for them "to ensure that
they succeed and continue to
prosper.’’
Apart from cut in corporate
tax, the minister said the
government was giving
incentives to small businesses to
the tune of $2,000 to hire young
people.
Moreover, he added, "we
are also providing support for
apprentices up to $19,000 per
individual for the employer and
continue to cut red tape... in
total, there is $1.9 billion support
for small businesses.''
BRAMPTON: Loblaw
Companies Ltd. says it has
finalized a plan that will
result in the closure of 22
unprofitable stores across
a range of its banners and
The decision comes as
the retailer plans to bring
home delivery services to
two of the country's biggest
cities in the next several
months.
Loblaw is partnering
with California-based Instacart
TORONTO: Ontario's striking
college faculty voted Thursday to
reject a contract offer and continue
their nearly five-week job action.
The 12,000 college professors,
instructors, counsellors, and librarians
have been off the job
since Oct. 15, leaving some 500,000
students out of class.
Talks between the colleges and
the union broke down on Nov. 4,
prompting the colleges to request
the final offer vote. After 86 per
cent of faculty rejected it, Ontario
Premier Kathleen Wynne said
she would meet with college and
union representatives Thursday
afternoon "to discuss how we can
resolve this situation immediately
and get students back to class
where they belong."
MONTREAL: The ultra low-cost airline
battle is heating up as fledgling airline
Canada Jetlines prepares to take on
WestJet's efforts to regain its mantle as
the country's low-cost leader.
The upstart airline's chief executive
told an investor conference Tuesday that
WestJet's discount brand Swoop won't
be able to match its low costs, which will
allow prices to average at less than $100.
"This country needs low fares. No
doubt about it," Stan Ganek told the Scotiabank
transportation and aerospace
conference.
But he said WestJet's creation of a
Swoop division just won't cut it.
