President Tonyboy Fernandez
G
reetings Fellow Rotarians . It
was a quiet a busy week for the
Club. We had 3 projects implemented
in just one week. Congratulations
to Everyone! The Fund Raiser,”Justice
League” was a major success.
Based on initial reports , we were able to
fill the 628 seats of Cinema 1 in Lim Ket
Kai Mall. I would to thank the Rotarians
and Rotary Anns especially the Chairs,
Dir Leony Quicoy , Ann PP Juvy Mae Sarraga
and Ann Pam Valencia for a job well
done. We hope to get a final accounting
in the next few days. We also implemented
the 2nd “ Gift of Sight to Children
“ with the Rotary Anns last Friday ,
November 17 ,2017 . A total of 30 children
were given correctional glasses to
improve the eyesight. All of the children
come from the public schools. I am happy
to note that hopefully , we will be
implementing the 3rd “Gift of Sight to
Children” in the 1st quarter of next
year .
I would like to thank our gracious
hosts , Rtn Tony and Ann PP Malou dela
Cruz . We had a wonderful time last November
18,2017 . There was so much
food , wine , singing and laughter. I still
believe that the club is not healthy if it
does not have fellowships. I feel fellowships
makes us know each other more
and these closeness helps us work hand
in hand in our service to humanity.
For the information of the Rotarians ,
only $2,500 is left for district grants. We
only have a few more weeks before the
cut off and so I would like to remind the
Rotarians who are still willing to donate
to the foundation , to do so at the soonest
possible time.
In the meeting of the Zone 1 Council of
Presidents , DG Linda Deleste has
stressed the need to recruit more members
. She mentioned that so far , the
whole district has a membership of
1,321 and with only 69 new members
recruited . The target is 1,500 and I
hope, we in the Club of Cagayan de Oro
can also do our part. Let us join together
and recruit!
We will have no meeting on November
30 , being a holiday. Our next meeting
will be on Dec 7, 2017 . ELECTION DAY!
I pray and hope that if you are elected
to a position , do give it your BEST!
Secretary Neil Ronard J. Que
W
e thank everyone for the relatively
high attendance rates in
our meetings and projects despite
the hectic month, most especially
our very active newly inducted Rotarians!
The November 9 meeting was highlighted
by PDG Manny Along comprehensive
talk about the History and Purpose of
the Rotary Foundation, District Grants,
and Global Grants. He also mentioned
qualifications to be recognized as a Paul
Harris Fellow, and induction to the Paul
Harris Society. We discussed the requirement
for an EREY (Every Rotarian Every
Year) recognition for the club which our
we are now eligible for, provided all of
us will donate $25 is a month before the
District Conference (May 11, 2018) to be
recognized.
Congratulations to everyone for a successful
week as well! We accomplished
the following in just three consecutive
days:
November 16 - Justice League Premier
November 17 - Gift of Sight for Children
November 18 - Joint Fellowship
T
he first installment of DC’s Justice
League (as a team) received
worldwide mixed reviews, with
critics praising the action sequences and
performances while criticizing the thin
plot, CGI and weak villain. The tone of
the film was met with varied reception,
with some praising it for being lighter
and more fun, while others noted it as
inconsistent.
Estimates say that as of November 19,
Justice League has grossed $96 million
in the United States and Canada, and
$185.5 million in other territories, for a
worldwide total of $281.5 million, against
a production budget of $300 million. It
had a worldwide opening of $281.5 million,
the 24th biggest of all-time. Estimates
for the total the film will have to
gross worldwide in order to break even
range from $600–750 million.
Personally, the movie itself was definitely
entertaining. The excitement of the
young children could be felt as they
waited in line with their families to enter
the movie house. Although it was evident
that the movie was targeted for a
younger audience, it had a good balance
of well-choreographed action scenes,
carefully thought out portions for drama
and romance, and a good amount of comedic
relief. The movie brought to life
Superman, Batman and the other superheroes
of our childhood and gave a new
light on heroes that have not yet been
introduced in the big screen before.
"YOU CAN'T SAVE THE WORLD
ALONE" is the main theme of the movie.
Superheroes worked together for the
betterment of humanity. Teamwork was
something that was stressed out quite a
lot throughout the entirety of the movie.
I think it was timely that the RCCDO
sponsored a block screening of the film.
I cannot help but compare this to the
Rotary Club --we work together to help
those in need and we have a better
chance in making a difference when we
come together, for it is almost impossible
to work alone. This I believe, is something
the Justice League and the Rotary
have in common. And like Batman, although
we do not have any actual powers,
we acknowledge when it’s our turn:
we find ways to help those who need us.
W
hether it’s a child or an
adult, super heroes have always
enticed us with their resonating
stories of power intrigue, and
justice. There is much to learn from just
watching (or for that matter, reading
about) superheroes, especially when we
focus on their psychological attributes.
These icons of greatness can mentor
our thoughts and actions in the workspace
and make us true leaders. Like
trophies on a pedestal, organizations are
also looking for heroes on their org
charts; leaders who will spearhead the
company into super-ness.
So, if you break it down, organizations,
simply wants HEROES on their team:
H – HARDWORKING
E – ENERGETIC
R – RESPONSIBLE
O – ORGANIZED
E – ERUDITE
S – SELF-STARTER
H – Hardworking:
12
When it comes to the trait of being hardworking
Wonder Woman tops the chart.
She was blessed by the Gods to become
as beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena,
as strong as Hercules and as swift as
Hermes. However, she chose to surrender
her powers to stay on earth and
save mankind. As Diana Prince, she
worked hard to master the martial arts
and the use of her many weapons. Her
calling was to be the protector of mankind
and she chose to use her fighting
skills to overcome evil, thereby spiraling
her to ‘Super hero’ status. It is this super
willed hardworking Wonder Woman who
teaches us that fruits can be borne only
if the land is tilled.
What can we learn from this?
Hard work pays. With dedication and a
pure sense of conscientiousness, Wonder
Woman did what she was chosen to
do. A good leader leads by example and
a lackadaisical leader will have similar
followers. A leader who works hard to
meet deadlines motivates team members
to deliver on time.
E – Energetic:
Need we say more about Jay Garrick’s
(the original Flash) energy, of having
been knocked out for weeks, flies by like
a hurricane to meet the girl he has been
pining for years? Jay Garrick’s passion
for Chemistry led him to inhale fumes
which gave him the ability to run at an

insane pace and thus Flash a.k.a the
Crimson Comet was born. When Jay
Garrick learned of the powers he had
gained, he put them to good use by
fighting crime. He channelized his energy
to what he was most passionate
about.
What can we learn from this?
What we can learn from
Flash is that he pursued
his passion with great
zest and put to good
use his newly acquired
skill. His energy is unsurmountable
when it
comes to his super heroic
feats. It is this zest
which will help an individual
accomplish his
tasks to a heightened
degree. Enthusiasm
speaks volumes. Having
a passion for the task is
half-the-job done. If
tasks are approached
with the energy of Flash, then carrying
it through fruition is the easiest. In a
recent poll, the ability to energize people
was one of the most effective traits
of a good leader.
R – Responsible:
A Leader Pursues His Passion With Great Zest
13
If you are looking to rise up the ladder
of success, then latching onto the rung
of responsibility is inevitable. Spiderman
in his first taste of power blithely ignores
the chance to stop a fleeing thief
and his indifference catches up with
him when the same criminal later robs
and kills his Uncle Ben. Spiderman
tracks and subdues the killer, only to
learn that he could have undone what
was done on that fateful day. Peter Parker
understands that, ‘With great power
there must also come great responsibility’
and in order to be Spiderman he has
to take on the responsibility that comes
with being a superhero and not just bask
in the greatness of the new power
gained. In time Spiderman makes important
choices where he understands
where his responsibility lies and acts in
accordance with the role he has taken
on. It is this acknowledgement
of his responsibility
that
makes him a superhero.
What can we learn
from this?
Great leaders don’t let
their gifts go to waste
but, rather, see them
as a calling to do
something heroic. An
individual who takes
responsibility for his/
her actions ups the
desirability quotient.
Acknowledging the responsibilities that
one has to undertake is indicative of a
person who is in-charge and in control.
What it suggests is that the person has
the ability to take important decisions,
learn from previous mistakes and take
charge of the situation, in other words it
is the core of leadership. What’s more,
according to a recent survey more than
80% of managers consider a sense of
responsibility, the no. 1 productivity motivator
for them.
O – Organized:
Professor ‘X’ systematic approach to promote
the peaceful affirmation of mutant
rights, to mediate the co-existence of

mutants and humans, shows how adept
he was in his organization skills. To
achieve these aims, he founded Xavier’s
Institute to teach mutants to explore and
control their powers. His great prowess
into the management of this institution
for the greater good of mutants and humans
is remarkable. It is for these traits
that he is highly regarded and respected.
What can we learn from this?
Developing a systematic approach to
work is the foundation of every great
Leader. Being process-oriented and
methodized goes a long way in building
institutions of trust and credibility. Clutter
deters creativity, while organization
promotes ingenuity and is a true mark of
a leader.
E – Erudite:
Knowledge is profound and Tony Stark is
the living example of this. His ardent
knowledge of technology can be only
matched with his super wit. Ironman
always steered ahead of opponents, all
the time, by putting to good use his colossal
wisdom in the technical sphere
and creating the best gadgets for his
arsenal.
all what is in vogue today is passé, tomorrow.
To enumerate this point, more
than 2400 students in American colleges
were surveyed on the characteristics
they perceived are important to being a
great leader and it was found that 48%
believed that a leader should have a
graduate degree.
S – Self-starter:
Batman trained himself both physically
and intellectually to fight crime. He is our
classic self-starter, who swore revenge
on criminals because of the injustice
done to his parents and schooled himself
to combat the slickest criminals and
bring them to justice. Unlike most superheroes,
he does not possess any super
powers, instead he makes use of his intellect
to fight crime. His indomitable will
& physical prowess makes him the super
hero he is, which is characteristic of any
self-starter.
What can we learn from this?
Acknowledging the responsibilities that one has to
undertake is indicative of a person who is in-charge and
in control.
What can we learn from this?
Knowledge is limitless and will always be
your ally to supersede. An erudite leader
is well-informed to take important decisions
worthy to make or break a company.
How then is a leader to stay ahead
from him competitors if he is not enriched
with the complete knowledge of
his product, market and how to overcome
any adversity? Keeping yourself up
-to-date on the latest trends in technology
will ensure your superiority in the
market and is key to your survival. After
14

Proactive leaders literally make hay while
the sun shines. They are the pioneers for
innovative thinking. Thinking and acting
fast with conviction and confidence will
only result in big wins. A successful entrepreneur
learns the job on the go and
doesn’t believe in handholding. According
to a recent survey, over 70% of the
respondents wanted to launch their own
organization, thereby indicating the
boom of the self-starter leaders in the
emerging market.
After all as the Dark Knight said, ‘A hero
can be anyone’ & an organization wants
a hardworking, energetic, responsible,
organized, erudite self-starter on their
team.
W
orld Toilet Day is a day to take
action. It is a day to raise
awareness about all the people
who do not have access to a toilet - despite
the human right to water and sanitation.
Of the world's seven billion people,
2.5 billion people do not have improved
sanitation. One billion people still
defecate in the open. Women and girls
risk rape and abuse because they have
no toilet that offers privacy.
The Water & Sanitation Rotarian Action
Group is a group of Rotarians whose
purpose is to support Rotary clubs to
effectively plan, finance, implement,
monitor and evaluate water, sanitation,
and hygiene programs, where they are
most needed in a collaborative, costeffective,
timely, and sustainable manner,
true to the principles of Rotary International.
Wasrag operates in accordance
with Rotary International policy but
is not an agency of, or controlled by,
Rotary International.
Early on, Paul Harris (Founder of Rotary)
realized that Rotary needed a greater
purpose. While Harris served as president
of the Chicago Rotary Club in 1907,
the club initiated its first public service
project, the construction of public toilets
in Chicago. This step transformed Rotary
into the world’s first Service Club. The
Rotary Club of Chicago performs one of
its first acts of community service.
The club calls a meeting of civic
organizations to establish a committee
for installing city comfort stations,
or public toilets, to improve
sanitation.
It was this same concept of promoting
business which led to the
first community service project of
the original Chicago Rotary Club. In
their effort to promote more business,
the members decided that since the
women did most of the shopping in
downtown Chicago, they would do even
more if they stayed downtown longer.
So, what was the answer? If they put
public toilets in downtown Chicago – the
shoppers would not have to go home so
soon. And that is what they did — installed
the first public restrooms in
downtown Chicago. When service is provided
— business is enhanced. It was on
that basis that the world’s service club
movement was launched.
By ANN President Angelie Mae Dael
T
he long-awaited movie, Justice
League finally hit the big screen
last Thursday, November 16.
After 3 months of preparations, the
block movie screening joint project for
the Rotarians and Rotary Anns of RC
CDO was at blast off point.
“You can’t save the world alone” was
the movie tagline and it too best described
how the project came to fruition.
The Rotary Anns took the lead affording
the Rotarians time to critically focus on
other projects in the pipeline. However,
the project did not take a back seat because
the Anns’ Justice League core
group frequently joined the Rotarians’
weekly meeting to remind them of our
movie project.
October was devoted to our search for
partners and by God’s grace commitment
for sponsorships steadily came,
our list grew longer and we all heaved a
sigh of relief knowing that the project
would be a success. In total we had 12
major sponsors, 8 minor sponsors and
33 patrons. We were exhilarated that
tickets were sold-out 2 weeks before the
movie date and often had to refer ticket
queries to the RC CDO Premier who likewise
had the same project at another
venue.
It was my daily prayer to give us all joyful
hearts while we served and in retrospect
we had good laughs along the
way. We give all the glory to God for
blessing us with the success of the Justice
League movie project.
It is time to roll the credits and to these
amazing people, you have my undying
gratitude: special mention to Treas. Pam
Valencia, for accepting the role as Project
Chairwoman. PP Juvy Sarraga and
Dir. En-En Juarez for ably assisting as
Project Co-Chairwomen. To all the Rotarians
and Rotary Anns who stepped
forward and became sponsors; to the
Rotarians and Rotary Anns who solicited
for sponsorships – you were all heaven
sent! To the Rotarians and Rotary Anns
who sold tickets by telling friends, relatives
and officemates – a big thumbs up
and grin! I thank Pres. Tonyboy and
Rotarian Justice League Project Chair,
Dir Leony Quicoy for their patience and
support. We also thank Dir. Gus Rodano
and his Red Lemon team for the excellent
AVP prior to the movie; PAG Cris
Parojinog for the fish crackers of our
movie snacks; Dir Ann Fernandez and PP
Ching Sarraga who repacked our fish
crackers. Last but not the least, a mammoth
thank you to the Rotarians and
Rotary Anns who manned the entrance,
became ushers and usherettes, distributed
snacks and generally brought cheer
and order to our entrance foyer of the
movie house.
It is important to remember that the
primary purpose of Rotary membership
is to provide each member with a
unique opportunity to serve others,
PUBLIC RELATIONS
NO PERSONAL PRIVILIGES
D
o Rotarians receive special business
benefits from their Rotary
membership? Should Rotarians
expect a special discount or some preferential
service just because they are dealing
with a fellow Rotarian? The answer is
clearly “No.” The Rotary Manual of Procedure
expressly states the Rotary position
on this matter. The policy, originally
approved by the RI Board of Directors in
1933, is that in business and professional
relations “a Rotarian should not expect,
and far less should he ask for,
more consideration or advantages from a
fellow Rotarian than the latter would
give to any other business or professional
associate with whom he has business
relations.”
Over 50 years ago the concept was expressed
that “True friends demand nothing
of one another, and any abuse of the
confidence of friendship for profit is foreign
to the spirit of Rotary.” On the other
hand, if new or increased business
comes as the natural result of friendship
created in Rotary, it is the same normal
development that takes place outside of
Rotary as well as inside, so it is not an
infringement on the ethics of Rotary
membership.
Historically Rotarians perpetuated a
myth that Rotary should not seek publicity,
but rather let our good works speak
for themselves. However, an early stated
policy observed that “as a means of extending
Rotary’s influence, proper publicity
should be given to a worthwhile project
well carried out.” A more modern
public relations philosophy was adopted
in the mid-1970s that affirms that “good
publicity, favorable public relations and a
positive image are desirable and essential
goals for Rotary,” if it is to foster
understanding, appreciation and support
for its Object and programs and to
broaden Rotary’s service to humanity.
The role of the club public relations committee
is to develop and execute a plan
to tell the public about Rotary and promote
the club’s service projects and activities.
Having strong public relations
ensures that communities around the
world know that Rotary is a credible organization
that meets real needs. When
a Rotary club has a positive public image,
current members are motivated to
be active and prospective members are
eager to join.
Public image and membership growth
are interconnected. A high quality, consistent
public image campaign will
prompt individuals to seek out local clubs
and be more inclined to accept invitations
to join.
