First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to
serve society;
Third. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community
RI PRESIDENT’S AUGUST MESSAGE
A
well-known saying goes, "If you
want to change the world, go home
and love your family." That doesn't
mean people should ignore the needs outside
their own homes; instead, they should pay
attention to the needs within.
It can be tempting, when our priority is service,
to focus only on the things that look like
service: the projects, the planning, the work
that yields a visible benefit to those who
need it. But to do that work effectively, we
need to keep our own house in order. In
Rotary, that means conducting ourselves in
accordance with the principles of Rotary,
treating others with respect, and following
The Four-Way Test. It means maximizing our
impact by planning carefully and stewarding
our resources wisely. And it means looking
after the long-term health of our organization
by ensuring that our membership is strong,
engaged, and healthy.
Our membership has hovered around the
same 1.2 million mark for 20 years. We
aren't growing, and our membership is getting
older. We have too many clubs that
don't have the knowledge or motivation to
have an impact: clubs that don't know what
we're doing on a global level, clubs that don't
know about our programs or our Foundation,
that don't even know how to get involved.
And with a membership that is still mostly
male, we clearly aren't doing enough to become
the organization of choice for women
who are seeking to serve.
We are a membership organization first. If
we want to achieve the goals we've set for
ourselves, we need to put membership first.
All of us have a responsibility to take membership
seriously, not only by inviting prospective
members, but also by making sure
new members are welcomed into clubs that
offer them something of value. If you see
someone walk into a meeting and hesitate,
be sure that person has a place to sit and is
part of the conversation. If you're enthusiastic
about a Rotary program, make sure your
club knows about it and knows how to get
involved. If you see a need in your community,
talk about it at this week's meeting. If we
want to be part of an organization that's
strong, that's active, that's having an impact
– start at home, and Be the Inspiration in
Rotary.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By: Danilo T. Empedrad
President RY 2018-19
A
s we start the Rotary year 2018-2019,
let us keep in mind the Rotary International
vision statement: “Together,
we see a world where people unite and take
action to create lasting change – across the
globe, in our communities and in ourselves.”
The key here is the word UNITY. Whatever
concerted action we need to undertake requires
the united efforts of every member of
the group to ensure the effective realization
of our goals.
We are pretty well aware that we have
joined an organization that primarily exists in
order to serve. As such, every Rotarian
should possess the inspiration to be of service
and is aware of the needs of our community.
Being properly empowered, we can
now serve through the Club and contribute
our share to effect change in the community.
To achieve this, we need to be focused on
our reason for joining the club. Aside from
the clean fun, the friendship and camaraderie,
the unforgettable fellowships, and goodwill
among fellow Rotarians, we should remember
that we are here to serve, and as
such, we have to be prepared to share our
time, resources, talent and ideas that the
Club can effectively harness to serve the
community. We also need to be aware of
each other’s individual perspectives on issues
that may affect the organization as a whole.
And most importantly, we have to be prepared
to make adjustments among ourselves
and accommodate each other to achieve a
united effort to all club actions and programs.
As a group, let us all be aware of each other’s
individual talents and provide the opportunity
to allow each one to serve in the manner
that works best for him. With this, we
are now given the chance to showcase our
way of community servicing and eventually
appreciate the enduring value of membership
to the Club.
We have lined up our activities for the year
and we are aware of the challenges we have
to overcome to realize these community projects.
We are aware too, that the most important
key has always been unity and cooperation.
Hence, everyone is encouraged to join hands
and share our talents, time and resources to
be of service to the community. Let us keep
in mind the exhortation of our Rotary International
2018-2019 President Barry Rassin
that “we take action because we are not
dreamers, but doers.”
list by end the month.
I look forward to seeing more names added to
this list as we progress into our second month
this August. Please help your current Board
our club operations and RI obligations.
I'm also happy to announce to the general
We are also in the process of updating our
THE CLUB ADMINISTRATOR
By: Tito Noel A. Mora
Director for Club Administration
A
s we all know, the effectiveness of the
administration of the Club is mainly to
keep the members of the Club informed
and ensure not only awareness of the
activities of the Club but also to secure that
each and every member can find his place to
exercise his gifts: time, talent and treasure
towards achieving the mission and vision of
the Club. We are therefore obligated to reach
out to every member through our Club Bulletin
and other means of communication, including
social media, whereby we not only
generate interest but create a sense of pride
and honor, to belong to the Rotary Club of
PP Mar Paano as Meeting Coordinator during July 12
General Membership Meeting @ Mallberry Suites
Cagayan de Oro.
We hope to have lively meetings, where we
all step out of our workplaces for a few precious
hours of fellowship and camaraderie.
We also create occasions to celebrate sans
the concerns of the Club, where we can call
each other “barkada” or friends bound by
service to our fellowmen. We also endeavor
to raise funds for service projects, which will
not only tap our own generous hearts but
also win over the business community to the
cause of Rotary International.
We thank therefore those who have signed
up to be our Program Coordinators who are
not only tasked to appoint their members
and make sure our Club meetings are opportunities
for learning, giving and developing
ties. We also thank PP Mar Paano for chairing
the Fun Golf Fellowship and PP Caloy
Gorospe to spread the cheer of Christmas
through songs this December and PT Vince
Valencia for a movie premier.
And the parties and fellowships to be chaired
by Rtn Bong Butaslac, PAG Manny Alinabon,
PT Vince Valencia and PP Cris Parojinog.
So be there or be square, for Rotary year
2018-2019 will surely be a blast. Let us all
enjoy the ties we have developed out of our
shared desire to help our fellowmen.
BALIK-ESKWELA, FEEDING AND W.A.S.H. @
BARANGAY TABAKO
T
he most effective and least expensive
way to reduce disease and save lives
is easier than you think. According to
scientific studies, simply washing your hands
with soap and water can do more to prevent
diarrhea, death by malnutrition, and dehydration
than any single vaccine or medical
intervention.
As a feeding treat, the pupils were given
meals and chocolate drink which they ate
with gusto. The group also provided drawstring
bag filled with slippers, hygiene packs
and much needed school supplies to kindergarten
students as well as supply teachers
and parents with posters and manuals to
help them promote better hygiene.
Last July 14, the officers and members of the
Rotary club of Cagayan de Oro (RCCDO), its
Rotary Anns, and the Philippine National Police
(PNP) during its Balik-Eskwela and Feeding
program took part in activities promoting
this practice at the St. John Elementary
School of Purok Tabako, Lapasan, Cagayan
de Oro city. RCCDO brought its own expertise
and diverse perspectives to such efforts
by promoting and providing clean water,
proper hygiene and sanitation (WASH).
Be the Inspiration.
Editorial: Looking Back
Induction 2018
The speech of Police Chief Superintend Timoteo
G. Pacleb during the 71st Joint Induction
and Turn-over Ceremonies last July 01, 2017
at the Mallberry Suites and Business Hotel.
Good evening everyone!
W
hen i got the invitation to be part of
your event today — it took me a
while to decide whether to accept
or not. Excited as I was the first thing though
that came to mind is that I’m not even a Rotarian.
I also thought that I’d be speaking to
a group of people belonging to very special
organization, the rotary club! —people that I
have seldom been introduced to or interacted
with. Actually it was an informal invitation at
first as I only got a call from one of your distinguished
members, General Danilo “Sir Danny”
Empedrad. ang sabi ko sir pagisipan ko
muna. sabi niya hindi puwede ikaw na napili
ko……. the truth is I was about to make a
critical putt in a golf game when he called.
Kaya hindi ako makasagot agad….. Finally I
agreed….. mabuti na ang nai-shoot ko. Kung
hindi may utang si sir Danny sa akin!!
Well— I admit that I take pride in the invitation—
You know --- it is a great honor to be standing
before you here tonight --- and deliver a
message to a rare breed of men and women,
people who have distinguished themselves
not only in their respective careers and profession
but more importantly in constantly
helping and serving our fellowmen achieve
better lives.
As the stated purpose of the rotary it is to
provide humanitarian services, encourage
high ethical standards in all vocations, and to
advance goodwill and peace around the
world.
It is of no surprise that the rotary and the
PNP have very similar ideals. We also adopt
the same purposes in our organization as we
pursue our objective of attaining a true and
lasting peace in our communities.
For one our intensified anti-illegal drug operations
are directed to further reduce the incidence
of crimes. Statistics show that from
Jan to May 2018, there were only 5,413 incidents
of crime recorded. This figure is
41.27% lower than crime volume recorded
for the same period last year. Worth mentioning
is that crimes against person decreased
by 32.2 %, crimes against property
by 70%. We have also recorded a total of
1124 person arrested with 94 of it considered
as high value targets ( hvt) and a total of 681
personalities surrendered on our tokhang. We
have confiscated a total of 15. 22kg of shabu
and 4.04kg of marijuana. Never in the history
of the PNP in region 10 have we gained so
much accomplishment in the preventing the
16

commission of crimes.
On the other hand we have continued our
internal cleansing efforts to enforce discipline
and promote ethical standards in our ranks.
Last year, 76 PNP personnel were either dismissed
from the service or suspended for
various administrative offenses. Our drive to
rid our organization of scalawags, misfits and
rogue personnel will continue even as we
strengthen our disciplinary machinery.
For the past year these have been the challenges
that i faced as director of police regional
office northern Mindanao. It will remain
a challenge until we have fully eradicated
the roots of the illegal drug trade and until
we have fully restored internal discipline in
the PNP.
It was not nor will it be an easy task for me
and future regional directors. But with clear
goals and objectives, good leadership, and
enough passion for public service the task at
hand will always be achievable.
Perhaps among other factors that affect an
organizations success or failure, these are the
things i would like to impart not only to our
new set of club and Ann officers but to all of
us are shall we leaders in our right.
Identifying goals and the objectives in pursuing
them is very important. It should be the
first to be done in any endeavor. It should be
communicated to all so that each and every
member of the organization would think and
act toward attaining not only collective but
also individual goals. In some companies they
term it as target setting. In others they call it
performance targets. Whatever we may call
it, our leaders should set the goal. It is a
leader’s responsibility to know what it is and
how it should be attained.
In our goal to deter crime, our efforts would
include more policemen in crime prone areas,
more patrols, more checkpoints, and more
visible policemen. We sustain efforts to arrest
criminal offenders or those with warrants of
arrest and aspire to solve more crimes as we
can. Along this line, we recruit, train and
equip more investigators to increase our solution
efficiency. This is just an example on
how unit goals are accomplished in the PNP.
On leadership, I remember how we define it
in PMA.” It is the art and science of influencing
and directing men in order to get their
willing obedience and cooperation to accomplish
the mission.” some define it was also an
“art of motivating and inspiring others to
want to struggle for shared aspiration.”
I think an important factor in leadership is the
willingness to be a leader. The most effective
leaders i know are those who decide and
commit themselves to take on the responsibility.
A person who does not want to be responsible
and accountable should not be
vested with authority to lead others. He can-
Director, Rotary Foundation
A
s we start Rotary Year 2018-2019, we
also set to high gear our campaign for
the annual giving to The Rotary Foundation.
Last year, we made it as the 2nd top
contributing club in the district and the top 2
club in terms of per capita contribution.
Our banner performance
last year was made
possible mainly by the solid
efforts of PDG Manny Along, PP
Tonyboy Fernandez and all the
members who generously gave
their contributions to the TRF.
This year, we are off to a good
start since for Month to Date
July 2018 alone, we already
generated a total contribution
of $4,900 coming from:
PDG Tinnex Jaraula $2,000.00
PAG Carlo Romero $1,900.00
PAG Luigi Sarraga $ 1,000.00
As we work to surpass our total
contributions to the TRF for RY
2017-2018, let me share with
you some important facts and information
about the Rotary Foundation.
What is The Rotary Foundation?
The Rotary Foundation
PDG Constatino “Tinnex” Jaraula
donates $2,000 to the TRF
21
The Rotary Foundation is the economic engine
for Rotary International. It is a nonprofit
corporation that is supported solely by
voluntary contributions from Rotarians and
friends of Rotary who share its vision of a
better world. Its sole mission is to enable
Rotarians to advance world understanding,
good will and peace through the improvement
of health, the support of education and
the alleviation of poverty. We accomplish that
through our local and international
humanitarian and educational
programs.
Due to the hard work and
generosity of Rotarians worldwide,
The Rotary Foundation
has improved lives for nearly
100 years. Thus; every year,
Rotarians around the world
are called upon to make contributions
to the annual giving
in order to to help fund programs
such as Vocational
Training, scholarships, global
grants and district grants.
The annual fund generated by
the TRF funds programs in
more than 180 countries on
seven continents. It is only
when Every Rotarian makes a
gift to the Annual Fund Every
Year will we be able to continue
to do the great work of The Rotary Foundation.
When you choose to support our Rotary
Foundation, you are making a difference in
EDITORIAL, From p.21
not be a leader. He can only be a follower at
most.
Another important factor is that the leader
should work for the attainment of the organizational
goal and not for any other purpose
except such goal, otherwise he should not be
placed in such a position. Sometimes people
see the position as an opportunity to advance
personal rather than organizational goals.
This should not be the case.
The legendary general Douglas MacArthur
said and i quote “a true leader has the confidence
to stand alone, the courage to make
tough decisions, and the compassion to listen
to the needs of others. He does not set out
to be a leader, but becomes one by the
equality of his actions and the integrity of his
intent”
Lastly, our new set leaders of rotary leaders
should have passion in assuming their roles.
It is simply love for work. When you love
something or someone then you are passionate.
When you love your work, you strive for
perfection. You go the extra mile. You overcome
obstacles and be proud that you did it
simply for the love of it. Leaders should be
more passionate than the rest. Why— because
it will inspire others to do the same.
And as everyone becomes passionate then
they cease to experience hardship and instead
enjoy and take pleasure in what they
do.
In closing I would like to thank your organization
“the rotary club of Cagayan de Oro”
for giving me this rare privilege as guest
speaker. My congratulations go to PDIR
Danilo Empedrad for taking the helm as the
new president, and to the other officers as
well. i have no doubt sir Danny and the rest
of his team will lead the way in pursuing rotary’s
goals. With excellent leadership, crystal
clear objectives, and passionate love for work
they will be as if not more successful than
the outgoing set of officers.
The PNP and the rotary share the same ideals
of humanitarianism, goodwill, high ethical
standards, and peace. i hope our organizations
can transform these shared goals
through interaction for the betterment of our
communities. Mabuhay and rotary club of
two ways: you are changing lives and you
are literally saving lives. As Rotarians, there
is no better place to donate our money. We
get to use our own contributions to do good
in the world. 89% of your contribution goes
directly to the programs of The Rotary Foundation
while 2% is used for administration
and 9% is for fundraising. These percentages
are remarkable among charities across the
world. This is why The Rotary Foundation
gets such high marks from organizations that
rank charities.
Why should we support The Rotary Foundation?
Every minute of every day, someone’s
life is being improved by our Rotary Foundation.
Rotary clubs on every continent are
working to improve the living conditions and
health of their fellow citizens. Rotarians like
you and me can make a difference by continually
supporting our Foundation and the Annual
Fund. When we contribute to TRF, we
are promoting worldwide Peace and Understanding.
So, as the Club Director for TRF for RY 2018-
2019, I am calling upon all the generous
hearts of the Rotarians of the Greatest Club
to contribute this year to the TRF and work
together to surpass by 10% our contribution
last year and win the RI President’s banner
by achieving EREY Status (Every Rotarian
Every Year). As we contemplate on our contribution
to the TRF, let us be reminded by
the words of Mother Teresa of Calcutta: “it’s
not how much we give but how much love
we put into giving.”
