The Chairman's Notes
Today we extend a warm Paycare Ground welcome
to the players, officials and supporters of Christ The
King F.C. from the Coventry Alliance Premier
League. This is the first ever meeting between the
two teams and win lose or draw the players and
officials will be made welcome to join us for our
award winning post-match hospitality.
Since our last home game we have had two very
difficult away league games. Firstly against Old Wulfs
who were in second spot and I thought the lads
battled very hard and showed some excellent skills
and team spirit in a 2-0 win. Last Saturday we looked to avenge our only defeat
of the season with a long road trip to Wem Town. We came away disappointed
going down 3-2, after taking an early lead through a Sam Giles penalty, Wem
then raced into a 3-1 lead before a spirited second half display and a goal from
Scott Broadway set up a rousing finish. In the two games against Wem this
season they are without doubt the best team we have played.
On the subject of away games I must say that I have been very disappointed
with the hospitality we have been offered (or not) so far this season. Firstly in my
opinion “hospitality” should be “hospitable” which normally means a nice friendly
welcome to the home of your visitors and an equally warm invitation to join your
hosts for food and drinks. With the agreement of the clubs the League have set
minimum hospitality standards this season. The standards for players and club
officials are not demanding and are not costly, constituting a drink on arrival, tea
or squash at half time and food (hot or cold) after the match. I am sorry to say far
too often clubs have fallen well short of this and of my definition of hospitality.
That said here at Darlaston we will continue to set the highest possible
hospitality standards from the moment our visitors walk through the gates.
On a more positive note we expect the refurbishment of the ladies, gents and
disabled toilets to start in the next few weeks and the clubhouse refurbishment
will continue with the purchase of new tables and chairs.
Finally a final reminder to ask you to make sure you have cast your 10 votes in
the Aviva Community Fund. Please see our website and Facebook pages to see
what you need to do to cast your votes and please ask family, friends and work
colleagues to do the same.
Enjoy the game and thank you again for your magnificent support………
View from the Dugout
It seems a long 7me ago since I wrote my last piece for
the when programme before our 6-0 first defeat of the
season at home against Wem Town. That game seems to
be a good star7ng point, may I say that’s the performance
of the players that day was unacceptable. We can forgive
mistakes and also poor performances because no one
does them on purpose. One thing we cannot forgive is
players not giving everything on the pitch and carrying
out our instruc7ons. Whilst I'm not saying that applies to
every player it applies to some.
To turn up at Old Wulfrunians the following week and
play the way we did, securing a 2-0 away win against our rivals was nothing but chalk and cheese
compared to our last performance. It just shows what the squad and players can do, we were
pleased with the desire and work rate shown in the game. We knew it would be a tough game to go
into and I thought we thoroughly deserved the 2-0 win on the day as they didn’t really have a good
chance or dominate the game at any 7me.
The return fixture at Wem with the thoughts of our last game against them, we were determined to
give a be@er account of ourselves. We were forced into changes again due to injuries and player of
availability. We started the game well going a goal in front early with a Sam Giles penalty and should
have gone up to two nil up five minutes later.
Wem came back into the game and had the be@er of the first half and deserved to go in a half-7me
one up. The second half as a different story, we once again came out sharper showing a real intent,
but we couldn’t find the net which we paid for soon aBerwards. Following an a@ack, we lost the ball
close to the Wem area and they scored from a counter a@ack. The lads managed to get back into the
game with a well worked Sco@ Broadway header aBer fine work wide on the leB from Ant Nicholls
and Sev. Despite going three upfront we couldn’t find an equaliser before the end of the game.
Overall, we gave a much be@er account of ourselves and ba@le to the end another day we may have
got a result.
Wednesday, we played our second round J.W. Hunt Cup game against Atherstone Town of the Total
Mo7on Midlands Football League Division One. Atherstone play at the same level as our WMRL
Premier clubs and having already beaten two WMRL teams 4-0 away from home this season in Cup
compe77ons we knew that it would be an extremely difficult fixture. But given the distance to travel,
injuries within the squad and also player availability we were always going to be on the back foot.
A 6-1 loss was a fait result, they are a really good side, who move the ball quickly and at pace.
Finally, on behalf of the players and the management team I would like to thank all spectators that
have must have travelled nearly 200 miles for our last two away games. To travel almost into Wales
and then well into Warwickshire it’s a huge ask. We cannot thank you enough and salute you for
your uncondi7onal support.
Match Report
West Midlands (Regional) League Division One
Old Wulfrunians 0 Darlaston Town (1874) 2
Saturday 4th November Kick Off 2 pm
Darlaston Town (1874) players, officials and supporters make the short journey around
the south side of Wolverhampton to face a tough West Midlands (Reginal) League game
against second placed Old Wulfrunians who were on a good run losing only one game in
the last six and winning the remainder.
ABer the abject performance against Wem Town at home, Manager Andy Parkes made
only two changes, when some would argue more were warranted. Out went Kieran
Payne who was relegated to the bench and James Filkins who was unavailable. In came a
returning Tyrone Clarke and recently married Ricky Kelly. Changes were also made in the
Subs7tutes, with Steve Mason and Kieran Payne replacing Ashley Jus7n and Sam Baxter.
ABer a quick pitch inspec7on by the Referee and his assistants the pitch was deemed
playable on the condi7on the standing water in and around the centre circle was
removed and drained.
Old Wulfrunians started
the game at a frene7c
pace, crea7ng three
chances in the opening
two minutes, keeper
Aaron Morris 7pping over
a header in the first
minute and the Darlaston
defence needed to be
alert to block a goal bound
shot and header.
Darlaston for the second
week running struggled to
get out of their own half,
but this week it was not due to the weather, but their opponents work rate and
pressure. When the ball did get up to Broadway or Hughes, they couldn’t hold up the ball
long enough or they gave away silly free kicks puHng the midfield and defence under
pressure.
Old Wulfrunians despite having the lion’s share of the possession could not penetrate
the resolute Darlaston defence they con7nued to press forward Billy Morgan was lively
on the right, Noah Diallo was siHng in centre midfield trying to dictate the play
6
alongside
Jake Pearson. Diallo’s
delivery from corners
and free kicks were
star7ng to cause
problems. Following a
corner on 14 minutes
a poor Darlaston
clearance reached
Liam McEvoy who
couldn’t keep his
soundly hit volley
beneath the crossbar.
Old Wulf’s craBed another good opening, but Bradshaw’s goal bound effort was once
again blocked by Darlaston’s defence. Darlaston’s only effort of the opening 15
minutes was a blocked Haden Hughes effort which was blocked by Josh McEvoy which
went out for Darlaston’s first corner of the match.
Against the run of play on 24 minutes Darlaston broke the deadlock and took the lead,
Sco@ Broadway latching on to a loose ball aBer Old Wulfrunians keeper Bostock saved
a Hayden Hughes effort, Broadway scoring his 11th League goal and first of the game.
The goal rocked Old Wulfrunians, Darlaston were now started to pass the ball around
playing from the back at every opportunity. Both sides received booking, Old
Wulfrunians leB sided
player Chris Farnell and
Sco@ Broadway for
Darlaston.
As the half came to a
close Old Wulfrunians
had another two efforts
Jake Pearson missing
the target and Chris
Farnell’s effort was
again blocked by the
diving McAllister who
seemed to be a ball
magnet. Best effort of
the half followed a
Darlaston right sided corner, a half-cleared ball came out to Tyrone Clarke who from
35 yards connected with a dipping shot which crashed back off the crossbar, forwards
Broadway and Hughes looked glued to the floor as neither moved or made an
effort to score. 7
The half-finished with Darlaston one up, did they deserve it, yes, they had the be@er
craBed chances than Old Wulfrunians, who despite all their possession and effort
didn’t force Aaron Morris to make a save of any note.
The second half started with Old Wulfs having two quality chances in the first four
minutes of the half, but both efforts were blocked by Stanton and one again
McAllister. But aBer 50 minutes Old Wulfrunians were reduced to 10 men, following
Chris Farnell’s stamp on Luke Charlton, Referee Stephen O’Neil rightly produced a
straight red card. The loss of Farnell didn’t seem to be hindering Old Wulf’s efforts and
the game decided into a midfield ba@le, neither set of forwards seemed able to hold
the ball, Darlaston’s Ant Follows pulled a 25-yard effort wide aBer a Broadway lay off,
and Darlaston’ ball magnet McAllister took another Old Wulf’s effort in the chest.
ABer 64 minutes
Darlaston doubled their
lead, Sam Giles
produced a run and
cross from Darlaston’s
right, Sco@ Broadway
had his first-7me effort
saved by Jamie Bostock,
but Broadway was quick
to take advantage of
the parry forcing the
ball home from a yard
out scoring his twelBh
league goal of the
season. Both sides used their alloca7on of three subs7tutes, Old Wulf’s in an effort to
create a worthwhile chance and Darlaston in an effort to introduce fresh legs to see
the game out.
Darlaston con7nued to press forward looking to add to their goal tally, efforts from
Broadway and Clarke were blocked. Hayden Hughes missed a great chance from 40
yards aBer a poor clearance from Old Wulf’s keeper, but his quickly taken chance could
not be directed towards goal. Hughes wasn’t finished there, chasing a lost cause he put
cap7on Jack Rowley under immense pressure winning the ball along the leB by-line
and crossed to Broadway who had his header saved by the keeper.
Referee O’Neil was busy in the last quarter adding Mar7n Stanton and Ryan McAllister
to his book following a shirt pull and a miss-7med tackle respec7vely. Old Wulfs had
three efforts in the last seven minutes of the game, Noah Diallo had their best chance
of the three forcing Darlaston’s keeper Morris into a smart save.
Darlaston secured a vital three points with their 2-0 win against their rivals for
promo7on achieving their first double over a team this season. 8

West Midlands (Regional) League Division One
Wem Town 3 Darlaston Town (1874) 2
Saturday 11th November Kick Off 3 pm
In a pulsa7ng game in deepest Shropshire, Darlaston failed to avenge their only defeat of
the season going down by the odd goal in five to an excellent Wem Town who made it
five consecu7ve League wins to leapfrog their visitors into fiBh spot.
Manager Andy Parkes was again forced into changes due to injury and availability, Luke
Charlton and Lucas Hough made way in the star7ng line-up for Liam Cox and Dave
Richards who was returning from injury. On the bench Manager Parkes also included
Sam Baxter, Addy Allen and new signing Ant Nicholls.
The visitors made an
excellent start and were
ahead in the 4th minute.
Hayden Hughes and Sco@
Broadway exchanged
passes and as Broadway
cut across the penalty area
he was brought down by
Michael Owen. Sam Giles
stepped up to take the
resul7ng spot kick bea7ng
the outstretched hand of
keeper Mark Hawkins. The
home side responded with
Paddy Townsend forcing
keeper Aaron Morris into ac7on and Dave Walbyoff shoo7ng off target on two occasions.
On 11 minutes Wem had keeper Hawkins to thank as he was quick off his line to deny
Broadway a certain goal, blocking the striker's 10 yard shot with his legs, following some
excellent play by Hughes.
The front three of Wem were impressive as they pushed forward for the equaliser Chris
Peel and Walbyoff both missing half chances. The visitors were finding it difficult to keep
the home side at bay with the superb Paddy Townsend pulling the strings in midfield.
The home side thought they had equalised in the 28th minute when subs7tute Jordan
Bachelor cut in from the leB to unleash a superb curling shot from 25 yards which struck
the foot of the post and rebounded to safety. The pressure on the visitors was now
intense, Walbyoff despite looking five yards off side brought a superb blocked
10
save from Morris but from the resul7ng corner the visitors equalised. Tim Astley's leBwing
corner was met by Ma@ Cohen and found James Astley who slo@ed home from
six yards.
Wem were having the be@er of the exchanges, Bachelor had two efforts blocked,
before it was third 7me lucky in the 36th minute as he put the home side ahead aBer
being set up by right back Luke Thomas. A Ma@ Cohen header skimmed the bar whilst
at the other end Hughes had a header well saved by Hawkins and Owen denied
Broadway a clear shot at goal.
The visitors opened the second half brightly with Hughes and Giles both failing to beat
Hawkins from the edge of the box. Wem responded with Sev Brzostowski clearing a
Chris peel shot off the line with a superb defensive header.
Both teams were
playing some
excellent
expansive football
and as challenges
flew in the game
was reaching
boiling point.
Hughes and
Broadway missed
difficult chances to
equalise before
Wem doubled
their lead, Astley
again the scorer
poaching his second goal from three yards following a goalmouth scramble aBer
Morris had made a save at the base of his right-hand post.
Darlaston refused to lie down and set up a rousing final 20 minutes when subs7tute
Ant Nicholls laid the ball back for Brzostowski whose first-7me leB-wing cross was met
by Broadway with a superb 12-yard header which he steered past Hawkins in the Wem
goal.
The game was now an end to end affair with Walbyoff and Bachelor both holding the
ball up well to frustrate the visitors whilst Townsend con7nued to prompt and probe
with some excellent incisive passing seHng up chances for Cohen and Thomas.
Darlaston pushed forward desperate for the equaliser, Zuki Stanton and Broadway
both having headers which failed to trouble keeper Hawkins.
Despite intense pressure from the visitors Wem held out comfortably in the last 10
minutes for a well-deserved win.
J.W. Hunt Cup Second Round
Atherstone Town 6 Darlaston Town (1874) 1
Wednesday 15th November Kick Off 7.45 pm
Supporters management and players of Darlaston Town (1874) endured a very
difficult journey into the heart of Warwickshire to face Atherstone Town in the JW
Hunt Cup second round tie.
Manager Andy Parkes was forced into more changes due to availability and injury,
James Filkins replacing Anthony Follows. Luke Charlton returning for the
unavailable Hayden Hughes and Seweryn Brzostowski replacing the injured
Tyrone Clark Campbell.
Atherstone Town play at a higher standard than ourselves their Division is the
equivalent of the Premier Division in the West Midlands (Regional) League.
Atherstone Town
have already
beaten
Premier
two
West
Midlands
(Regional)
League teams
this season both
away from home
and in cup
competitions.
They
Cradley
beat
Town
and Dudley
Town
convincingly by
4-0.
Manager Parkes always knew this fixture was going to be a difficult game. It did
not take Atherstone long to take charge of the game scoring their first of their six
goals in the fourth minute, a 20-yard drive from Ryan Quinn after Mitch
Thompson had squared the ball. The second was not long after on eleven
minutes finish from inside the six-yard box by Mark Williams after yet another
assist from Mitch Thompson.
Darlaston got themselves back into the game very quickly, a miss-kick from
Atherstone keeper George Woodward was chased down by Scott Broadway who
managed to bundle the ball home. Broadways goal only spurred Atherstone on to
dominate the remainder of the halve, Darlaston’s hard working midfield and
defence kept giving away cheap free kicks. Atherstone creating eleven further
attempts on goal in the remainder of the half adding to the score online after 35
minutes with a Nathan Haines header from an Alex Norton corner Darlaston went
into the break at 3-1 down having only had one effort during the first half.
18
Manager Parkes changed his formation at halftime and went from a lone striker
with two up front bringing on Anthony Nicholls for the ill Seweryn Brzostowski.
Nicholls wasted no time having an effort on goal in the first minute of the half.
It didn’t take long for Atherstone to start to dominate the game again moving
forward at pace at every opportunity. Further efforts on goal from Shorthouse
(two), Quinn (three) and Captain Alex Norton who scored Atherstone fourth in
the 59th minute finishing well from twelve yards.
Anthony Nicholls was proving a thorn in Atherstone’s side, after a rare
Darlaston attack he narrowly missed the target on 62 mins. Darlaston’s best
effort of the evening after 74 mins Addy Allen just missing the far post with a
header after excellent work once again from Antony Nicholls and Same Giles on
Darlaston’s left.
Atherstone
continued to
have more
efforts at
goal,
substitutes
Harry Walker
Donovan
rising shot
over the bar
and Danny
Harris missing
the target
when it
looked easier
to score. On
80 minutes
after a
surging run
into the area by Ryan Quinn, Ryan McAllister sent him crashing to the ground
with a trip. Alex Norton dispatched his second goal of the evening Atherstone
making it 5-1. Atherstone we’re not finished there a sixth was added by
substitute Ellis Whitelaw in the 86th minute. Just before the end of the game
Darlaston Town 1874’s JW Hunt Cup campaign is over for this season. Everyone
connected with the club would like to thank Atherstone Town for their
hospitality and wish them the very best for the future of the competition and
for their season.
The players of management now have a few days to recover and recuperate
ready for Saturday’s second round Birmingham County FA Vase home tie at The
Paycare Ground against Christ The King from the Coventry Alliance kick off
2pm.
Finally, on behalf of the club and the players, I would like to thank all of the
supporters who attended the game at Atherstone, having endured a very
difficult journey to the ground, I hope the return one was not as difficult. We
look forward to seeing you on Saturday when we go again.
A Look Around the
League
The situation at the top of Division One is now tightening up with 7
clubs covered by just 8 points. Worcester Raiders lead the way with
31 points from 14 games but dropped two points at home to twelfth
placed Telford Juniors in a rare goalless draw. In form Newport Town
are just three points behind and made it sixteen points out of a
