WELCOME
1. WELCOME
“BE A ‘FLY
ON THE
OFFICE
WALL’
IN INDIA!”
Have you experienced missed deadlines when working with team members in India? Did
you receive deliverables that did not meet the requirements you so carefully mapped
out? Are you one of many people who see India as a “black box,” where information in
doesn’t necessarily equal output? Do you have a sense that ‘yes’ might sometimes
mean ‘no?’ Would you like your Indian colleagues to communicate more and be proactive?
Do you want to get more out of your Indian team members?
Then this program is for you!
We’ve created a unique program that lets you be a ‘fly on the office wall’ in India. Where
you finally get to find out what happens after that conference call; and how to recognise
the subtle nuances of communicating with Indian team mates so you can deliver your
projects according to plan. Through Global Business Academy, you’ll receive all the
knowledge you need to be able to recognise and anticipate problems, and work more
effectively as a result.
This is not a program where you just sit back and listen. It’s very interactive: you get to
compare your understandings with 800 Indian business professionals. The self-learning
aspect helps you to reflect on what you’ve just learnt within your own work environment
so that you achieve measurable results.
We hope you enjoy the program and wish you huge success in India!
2.1 BEFORE YOU START
Objective
What do you want to achieve in India? Perhaps you want to improve service delivery,
finish a project before the due date or increase knowledge sharing with your Indian
team. Start this program with your objectives so that you maximise your success!
Pre- and post-measurement movies
These scenarios will test your perceptions of a situation and compare your understandings
with those of Indian.
Profile
The purpose of completing the profile information is for mutual learning. You get to
compare your views with those of Indians from different cities, genders, seniority
levels and more. At the same time, Indians are able to compare their viewpoints
with those of their Western colleagues.
FEATURES
FEATURES
2.2 FEATURES YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
Actor movies
All together there are 36 short actor movies. Together they tell a story, but
each short movie touches on a business topic such as getting commitment
from a colleague, voicing disagreement to the boss and what happens after
that conference call.
Mini culture documentaries
Upbringing and education have a huge impact on who we have become. The
10 documentaries help you understand why your Indian colleagues behave
the way they do as well as provide practical tips about face to face and remote
meetings.
Interactive questions
Each business video is followed by questions about the videos. You get to
compare your viewpoints with the Indian opinions of 800 people from 8 different
cities in India, interviewed by a professional market research company.
Key learnings
The Indian business professionals provide 12 summaries on important
business matters such as getting commitment, recognising a no in a yes,
giving negative feedback etc.
Hear what locals think
6 Indian business professionals share their opinion about the behaviour in the
movies: why people behave this way and the thoughts behind the behaviour.
Actionable insights
questions about general topics, such as what motivates you to stay with the
company or what makes you loose trust in someone. The answers are clear
preferences that you can apply in your work.
Self learning
After each learning block, you are asked questions to help you reflect on your
own work situation. After the reflection, you get to formulate SMART goals
which you can execute in between the learning. The more you reflect and
work on it, the more you will get out of this program.
SELF LEARNING
3. WHAT SELF-LEARNING LOOKS LIKE
In the self-learning environment you’ll reflect on your own work situation and
formulate SMART goals which you can execute in between each session. The
more you reflect and work on it, the more you will get out of this program.
PUT WHAT
YOU’VE
LEARNT
INTO
PRACTICE!
Meet Birgitta
She has followed the India program and would like to share her
self-learning journey with you. This part of the India program is
very extensive so we have decided to share a few extracts of
what she learnt, how she applied it and what she did to achieve
her objectives.
These were Birgitta’s goals
1. I want to finish my client project within the deadline.
2.
3.
I want to increase the client satisfaction rate from 5,9 last year to 7,0 this year.
I want to increase the commitment of my Indian colleagues to help me meet those goals.
Global mindset
Block 1: Hierarchy & Trust
Birgitta: I will start scheduling 1:1 skype meetings from next
week, rather than just conference calls. During our weekly
calls, I will ask more questions related to family life and hobbies.
What I haven’t done so far is share this myself as well. I will
start to share more about myself too.
Block 2: Face & Harmony
Birgitta: Rather than asking difficult questions on conference
calls, I will do this instead during my 1 on 1 calls. This will avoid
embarrassing my colleagues. I liked the comment in the movie
where they recommend that we should point out a better
way of doing things, rather than criticising the current way. I
will add it as a note to my diarised calls with India to incorporate
it into my communication.
Global Business Academy | Page 17
SELF LEARNING
SELF LEARNING
Effective teamwork
Effective leadership
Block 3: Indian uniqueness
Birgitta: Without stressing too much on what went wrong in
the past with other clients, I need the Indian team to come
up with ideas on how we can prevent this from happening for
this client so that we increase client satisfaction. I need to
reduce their sense of risk and increase the feeling of empowerment.
I will send a positive email to the entire team today
outlining the objectives so that they can prepare themselves
and organise a call for the week after to have a brainstorm
session. At the same time I have to be alert for Chalta Hai,
overpleasing and IST. I will put this as a reminder in my weekly
calls.
Block 6: Giving feedback & escalating
Birgitta: I like the subtle threat that ‘I have to report back
to my boss’. I also like the suggestion to escalate together.
In the past I just escalated when I didn’t like how things were
proceeding rather than being patient and coaching people to
open up. The project is actually running very smoothly so no
need to escalate but this is a really good learning. In fact, I will
share with the team today that I am really happy and that the
client is very satisfied!
Block 4: Getting commitment & saying yes/no
Birgitta: I now realise that I only explained the big picture
to the manager but not to individual contributors. I’ll do this
during my next weekly meetings. I don’t have weekly calls with
Shilpa and Rajiv so I will call them this week to explain the bigger
picture too. During these personal calls, I will also discuss the
ongoing project deliverables and check whether we are on
track and really focus on any hidden no’s. I will make a list of
follow on questions today (how will you do that) to fall back on
if I am in doubt.
Block 7: Management styles
Birgitta: Reaching the deadline begins with the briefing!!
I realize that I have to be very clear on the deliverables and
not assume too quickly that my team understands the work
scope or will ask questions if it is not understood. Luckily, a
lot of this was tackled during the brainstorm session 4 weeks
ago on how to prevent mistakes. And since the relationships
are strong, they ask questions. But for the next project, I will
communicate even more clearly what needs to be done, and
micro manage until I feel comfortable that the Indian team
member is running with it.
Block 5: Getting feedback
Birgitta: I want to make sure we are meeting the client’s
demands (and maybe overdeliver in some areas). Shilpa is a
valuable asset here. I want more feedback from Shilpa about
processes that impact the customer service and experience.
Thankfully I have already started to build a relationship with
her to explain the bigger picture, so that should make it easier.
Birgitta: To make sure Shilpa opens up, I will:
• Schedule a personal call and start with small talk
• Explain the bigger picture and purpose of my questions
• Tell her I appreciate direct communication and not get offended by it
• Encourage her to share information: ask a lot of open questions
(and stay silent if she does not answer straight away, so that she has to answer)
• Remain positive and steer the conversation if feedback is not useful
AFTER PROGRAM
4. AFTER THE PROGRAM
Test
To ensure that you have understood all the content and we have answered all
your questions, we will schedule a 15 minute test by phone. During this test, questions
will be asked to check your knowledge. The test also provides you with the
opportunity to ask additional questions.
Booklet
You will receive a booklet with the Key Learning summaries.
“PUT YOUR
KNOWLEDGE
TO THE
TEST!”
Certificate
You will receive a paper certificate (or e-certificate if you prefer)
confirming that you have successfully completed the India program
Consultancy
If you have very specific questions about your India strategy, a consultant can be hired.
Peer Learning
Upon request, you will be assigned to a peer with whom you can exchange your
challenges, experiences and strategy. This person can be from inside or outside
your company.
5. PRIVACY
We take your privacy very seriously. Your Self Learning environment is for your eyes
only. No one else can read your answers - not even your boss. If your manager wants to
see your SMART actions and progress, you can download it in the program and e-mail
it to him or her.
Global Business Academy can see your answers to the interactive questions, however
they will not be identifiable as yours. In other words, we can see your answers, but
they are not linked to your name, surname, email or company. We use your
anonymised profile data in two ways:
1.
2.
For the Indian program. Just like you see the Indian perception on a
situation, Indians will see the global perception on this same situation.
In other words, Indians learn how they are perceived by other nationalities,
such as yours.
In time, perceptions change. Global Business Academy will study the
overall data to analyse how perceptions are changing in time to uncover
trends or study differences between countries or generations.
Our program is stored on a server in one of the safest, most secured data centres in
the Netherlands. It is ISO 27001-2005 compliant.
FAQ
FAQ
7. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I log in and out?
You can simply close the website. When you login
again, you can continue with the tile that is highlighted
in green.
Why do I stay ‘in’ the program rather than
returning to the home page each time?
This creates a better learning flow in the program
and shortens the number of clicks.
How much time do I need to reserve for
the whole program?
Including the interactive questions and self-learning
the videobased program will take 6:30hrs.
Can I change from your recommended learning path?
Of course you can. The recommended learning path
is created to have time in between learning to put it into
practise and execute your SMART actions. In this way,
you will gain the most results. We recommend that you
reduce or lengthen your learning by a block (a block is
finished once you have completed the Self Learning).
What if I have questions about the content
during my learning journey?
Please write your questions in your Working
Document. Most of these questions will be
answered later on during the program. If questions
remain unanswered, please contact us via e-mail.
At the end of the program, you will have a test. This
test is conducted during a personal phone call. If
you have any questions that were unanswered,
you can raise these during this personal call.
What if I have technical issues?
Please email us on support@globalbusiness.academy.
I already have a lot of work experience with Indians.
Can I skip parts?
Module 1, Global Mindset, is all about understanding
how India is different. We recommend that you
watch the actor movies otherwise you miss part of
the story and the eye openers, and the Key Learnings
to ensure that you capture the eye openers.
Module 2 and 3 help you to define your strategy on
how to achieve your objectives. We recommend
you follow both modules completely to ensure the
best results.
There is no content specifically about my line of
business. Do I still learn enough?
Communication is at the core of every single business
objective and is an important driver for success.
Whatever your objective, it all involves knowing for
sure that they 1) understand, 2) will do it, and 3) are
committed to going above and beyond.
What is the difference between the Benchmark
and the Key Learnings?
The Benchmark videos give insights into behaviours
shown in the films. The Key Learnings are about
general behaviours in India and how to deal with
them most effectively.
Are the Benchmark and Key Learning films
scripted?
The six Indian business professionals featured in
these films are real professionals. Their views are
their own and nothing is scripted.
What is the difference between the Interactive
questions and the Actionable Insights?
The interactive questions are about behaviours
in the actor videos. The Actionable Insights are
about general topics such as what motivates you
to stay with the company or what makes you lose
trust in someone.
How did you get the data for the Indian
answers?
Global Business Academy hired an international
market research company in India to interview 800
Indian business professionals in 8 different cities
and capture their answers to the same actor videos.
They vary in age, gender, seniority and background
to provide the minimum data for the filters.
To display the diversity of the country in terms of
regions, generations, backgrounds and company
cultures (a westerns multinational has a different
corporate culture than an Indian multinational).
With the filters, you can also filter to match the
profile of your colleagues.
I am not a manager, do I need to finish the
entire program?
We recommend that you follow until Block 10 (negative
feedback). You may want to have a look at the
management styles key learning to understand
more about micro-management and performing
under pressure vs. motivation.
How is the diversity of India represented in your
program?
Diversity is represented through the characters
in the movie. Mr. Rathore represents the old style
boss whilst Anirudh the new style boss. Kartik is
the insecure, introverted technical employee from
Hyderabad and Karishma is the outspoken top
performer from Mumbai. In addition, the reality TV
features Indian business professionals from the
North, South and West of India. The 800 respondents
who voice their opinion in the interactive
questions represent the 8 largest cities in India.
How are the scenes representative for Indian
business behaviour?
The videos have gone through 5 stages of quality
control. Even post shooting, a team of Indian business
professionals decided which cuts would be inserted
in the India program.
Do I give my personal opinion or how the Indian
professionals would respond to the interactive
questions?
Unless indicated differently in the questions, you
give your personal opinion. The importance it to
gauge the difference or similarity between your
and the Indian perceptions. There is no right or
wrong. but when there is a big gap in perception,
it’s highly likely that miscommunication will occur.
I really like the India program and I would like it
for other countries too. What other countries
are available?
We launched with India and will be expanding into
more countries quickly. Please do share feedback
with us which country you would like and why.
