N o te.—Retirement for civil service employees was established by net of May 22, 1020. Under tills not<br />

ns amended July 3, 1926, and May 29, 1030 (effective July 1, 1030), employees of th e classified service<br />

and certain other groups, including unclassified laborers subject to labor regulations, are eligible for<br />

retirement on annuity at tbo ages of 82,05, and 70, according to the class of service, if they have rendered<br />

a t least 16 years of service. The last-named act permits the optional retirement of employees 2 years<br />

before reaching the retirement ago where they havo rendered at least 30 years of service and also permits<br />

retirement on account of permanent and total disability after 6 years of service. From the basic compensation<br />

of each employee within the scope of the acts there Is deductod 3)4 percent (2}£ prior to July 1,<br />

1926) thereof for deposit to tlio credit of the retirement fund. All amounts deducted prior to July 1,1930,<br />

and thereafter amounts deducted less $1 per month are credited to the employee’s individual account.<br />

Under the amendment of May 20, 1930, annuities ate composed of (1) a sum equal to $30 (or each year<br />

of servicenot exceeding 31) (provided it does not exceed three-fourths of average salary for any five consecutive<br />

years), and (2) the amount of annuity purchasable withtbe sum oredltod to the individual's acoount,<br />

together with interest at 4 percent per annum, with the provision that the annuity shall in no ease be less<br />

than an amount equal to the average salary, not to exceed $1,600 per annum, received during any five<br />

consecutive years, multiplied by the number of years of service, not exceeding 30, and divided by 40, By<br />

act of Mar. 2,1031 (effective July 1,1931), special provision was made for employees of the, Panama Canal<br />

and Panama Canal Railroad, who theretofore had been eligible for retirement under the oivil service<br />

retirement and disability act<br />
