English and its relatives – English und ihre Verwandtschaft
In the last task, you have dealt with the sound of different languages. Maybe you have noticed that some
languages sound very similar. This is because languages are divided into “families”. In Europe three families
dominate the picture; the Roman, the Slavic, and the Germanic languages. The languages belonging to one
family are related in that they share a similar grammar, and the root of words.
In der letzten Aufgabe hast du dich mit dem Klang unterschiedlicher Sprachen auseinandergesetzt. Vielleicht ist
dir aufgefallen, dass gewisse Sprachen sehr ähnlich klingen. Das ist so, weil gewisse Sprachen zu derselben
Sprachfamilie gehören. Das heisst die verwandten Sprachen besitzen einen ähnlichen Wortstamm und auch die
Grammatik ist nicht allzu unterschiedlich. In Europa sind vor allem folgende drei Sprachfamilien vorherrschend:
die romanischen, slawischen und germanischen Sprachen.

But English shares a lot of element with the Roman language too! That is because England has been occupied
by French speaking Normans for more than 300 years. 1066 the Normans conquered England at the “Battle of
Hastings” and introduced French as the official language. The ordinary people still spoke English though;
however, it was difficult if one could not speak French. For example, in court no English was spoken and so was
also the law book only written in French. Today many French words can be found in following areas:
administration, religion, justice, army, fashion, art, gastronomy (= food), education, and medicine.
It is estimated that there have been taken up around 10’000 words from French to English. This means that the
better you know French, the better you are at English and vice versa.

Aber Englisch hat auch sehr viel mit den romanischen Sprachen gemeinsam. Das hat damit zu tun, dass
England für über 300 Jahre von französisch sprechenden Normanen besetzt wurde. 1066 eroberten die
Normanen England bei einer Schlacht (=Battle of Hastings) und führten Französisch als offizielle Landessprache
ein. Das gewöhnliche Volk sprach zwar immer noch Englisch, doch hatte man es schwierig, wenn man kein

Verwaltung, Religion, Gesetzgebung, Militär, Mode, Kunst, Gastronomie (=Essen), Bildung und Medizin.
Man schätzt, dass bis zu 10'000 Wörter aus dem Französischen ins Englische aufgenommen wurden.
Das heisst für dich desto mehr Wörter du auf Englisch kennst, umso grösser ist die Chance, dass viele davon,
im Französischen sehr ähnlich sind und umgekehrt.

Language learning sure can be fun, but sometimes it can be tough, too. Sometimes even the slightest mistakes
can lead to misunderstandings, as for example in the following scene.

The coast guard understood the emergency call “Mayday, we are sinking.” as “Mayday, we are thinking.”
Sinking refers to something that goes down, so the plane is about to crash. Thinking is something that takes
place in your brain. The misunderstanding is caused because many learners of English have difficulties to
differentiate between the sound “th” and the sound “s”.

Fun and Frustration
Maybe you have heard that from a certain age it is not possible to learn languages anymore. This is not true. It is
only possible for native speakers or gifted people to pronounce the language with absolute perfection, but every
human being is capable of learning new languages up to a very high level, even at an old age. Everyone has to
try hard, but several scientific studies have shown: the better you like a language, the more easily you learn it.
Lust und Frust

Das stimmt nicht. Es ist zwar nur für Muttersprachler und begabte Menschen möglich eine Sprache absolut
