failure to reduce speed to
avoid an accident Nov. 2 after
the vehicle she was driving
struck the corner of Bethlehem
Apostolic Church on the
800 block of Princeton Avenue.
Passenger Ashley May
was later pronounced dead
at Silver Cross Hospital from
injuries she sustained in the
crash, and Smith was treated
for a fractured leg and other
minor injuries, according to
police.
of 122 Riverview Ave. in
Lockport, was charged with
their emergency lights after
seeing Pinnick riding a bicycle
in the middle of Barry
Avenue, and Pinnick rode
into the backyard of a residence
and fled on foot, police
said. Deputies stopped
Pinnick and he continued to
resist as deputies attempted
to gain control of him, according
to the police.
HOLIDAY
From Page 3
out to Lockport’s Christmas
event every year for
many reasons, but for them
the biggest draw is the live
reindeer from Summerfield
Zoo.
“We come here from
Plainfield – instead of seeing
our own tree festival
– because the crowds
are a little bit better and
more festive, it’s easier to
park and they have reindeer,”
Stephanie Austin
said. “We definitely wanted
to see the reindeer.”
Bringing their daughter
Zoe to meet Santa Claus
was the top priority for
Lockport residents Jodi and
Joe Zalewski as she wanted
to ask Jolly Old St. Nick to
bring her a Hatchimal and a
TV for her room for Christmas
this year. Jodi Zalewski
explained, “This is our
fourth year coming out to
this event, so it’s become a
tradition for us.”
City of Lockport staff
member Jodi Herman enjoys
seeing residents attend
and enjoy Christmas in the
Square each year.
“It’s a fun and free family
event that kicks off the
holidays,” she said. “We recently
– within the last few
years – have partnered with
the chamber for the shop local
program too so it brings
people into the stores in
Downtown Lockport.”
It’s no coincidence
Christmas in the Square
coincided with Small Business
Saturday as organizers
hoped attendees would
stop by local businesses to
start their shopping while
supporting independentlyowned
stores. Twelve Lockport
businesses participated
in the Passport to Christmas
in the Square program offering
event-goers even
more holiday cheer along
with the opportunity to win
a PS4 game console.
Cari Potter of PotterCo
Real Estate — who also
serves as secretary on the
Chamber of Commerce
board — explained, “We
gave businesses the opportunity
to host a craft or
a snack today in order to
have their business added to
the passport. The children
stopped by each location
to participate in the activity
and get their passports
stamped. In the end, we’re
offering a PS4 as a raffle, so
when they bring their passport
back they are entered
into that drawing.”
The PS4 raffle took place
right before the tree-lighting
ceremony in the heart of
Christmas in the Square.
Families can look forward
to many more opportunities
to soak in the holiday cheer
right here in Lockport.
“Next weekend the park
district is hosting the Santa
breakfast and Santa brunch
up at Prairie Bluff so families
can register for that before
it comes up on Dec. 2,”
Aspel said.
As the 2017 edition of
Christmas in the Square
came to an end, Herman
and Aspel had one final
message for attendees, saying,
“Happy holidays from
all of us.”
