Millis Girls’ Soccer
Captures Division 4
State Championship
By Christopher Tremblay
The Millis girls’ soccer team
opened the season with a tie
and a loss and suddenly found
themselves in a hole at 0-1-1, but
instead of feeling sorry for themselves,
the Mohawks buckled
down and went on a roll that saw
the team finish 12-2-2 during the
The Town of
Medway Purchases
the Ide House
Site to Become Medway Historical
Society Museum Next Fall
At the Medway Fall Town
Meeting on November 13,
2017, the town of Medway
voted to use $525,000 in Community
Preservation Funds to
purchase the historic “Jacob
Ide” house and its 1.41 acres
of land, at 158 Main Street,
Medway.
In an impassioned statement,
Sheila Dubrawski,
President of the Medway
Historical Society, called
well-preserved Ide House a
“vital part of Medway’s history.”
Dubrawski continued
that, “The Historic Society
has outgrown its building.” In
a response to resident Dawn
Williams, she explained that
the Historical Society would
like to work with Medway to
have the Ide House become
the group’s new headquarters.
Following the meeting,
Dubrawski told Local Town
Pages, “We are expecting to
manage the house as the Medway
Historical Society Museum
beginning next fall. Being
near the park and right on
Main Street will provide great
visibility to promote programs
and events.”
Groundbreaking
for Millis
Elementary
School
December 8th
By J.D. O’Gara
It’s official. A new elementary
school will indeed be built in Millis.
And it will officially begin on
December 8th, with a groundbreaking
ceremony at 9:30 a.m.
At the fall town meeting on
November 6, 2017, after facing
legal challenges both to the
location and to the process of
the original passing vote at the
Spring 2017 Town Meeting, the
town of Millis once again put the
question of a $51.8 million override
to build the new school to
the town, and voters overwhelmingly,
again, approved the measure,
442-21.
“I just am so grateful for
all the hard work of the town
boards, the Elementary School
CHAMPIONSHIP
continued from page 1
“Coming into the season,
I never thought that we’d accomplish
this. I do set high
expectations, but I was hoping
to go .500 in the league and
make the tournament,” Mohawk
Coach Steve Bailen said.
“After those first two games,
the girls rallied to come together.
I hold them accountable,
and they don’t take the
criticism personal, they know
it’s there to help them improve.”
Having only lost three seniors
from last year 11-5-4
team Bailen had 11 returning
starters taking to the field
with experience this fall; none
bigger than the team’s tri-captains.
Defender Julia Krauss,
striker Kaylee Francis and
midfielder Taylor Davis made
sure they delivered the Coach’s
words of wisdom to the rest of
the team.
“As Coaches, we had to
scout out our games and put
together a strategy,” Bailen
said. “The girls took to the
field, put that plan in motion
and executed it, while not always
to perfection, it was good
enough to win.”
As the number two seed in
the Division 4 South Tournament
the Mohawks defeated
Rising Tide 8-0, Cohasset 3-0
and Coyle and Cassidy 4-0 to
take home the Championship.
Millis then went on to outlast
Amesbury in overtime 2-1
and Millbury 1-0 for the State
Title. With nothing going
on in the first half Francis
knocked home a Jordyn Ferrantino
rebound in the very
early minutes of the second
half to give Millis the eventual
victory. It was Millis’ first State
Championship since 1999,
when Olivia Zitoli (now the
team’s Assistant Coach) was
on the squad.
Throughout the regular
season in the TVL, Millis plays
a majority of Division 2 and 3
teams, which helps prepare
them for Division 4 tournament
play. As the Mohawks
took to the post-season the
team played their up-tempo
style while using their speed,
tenacity and high energy from
start to finish.
“We came in not only focused
but with a high degree
of confidence,” the coach said.
“I always tell them you’re only
as good as your last win; you
can’t assume anything.”
Being able to bring Millis
another State Championship
was a great feeling for the girls’
soccer team, but the Coach believes
it goes further than that.
“The Championship was
an uplifting experience, not
only for the soccer team, but
for the entire girls’ programs
at the Millis High School. It
shows there is light at the end
of the tunnel,” Bailen said.
“This builds a lot of momentum
and enthusiasm with the
Millis Soccer Club as well as
town support and that of the
school.”
THE IDE HOUSE
continued from page 1
Dr. Ide, ordained in 1814
and married to Mary Emmons,
daughter of Dr. Nathanial Emmons
of Franklin a year later,
moved into the newly built house
in 1816. Eleven of their children
were born there, five of whom
died in infancy. Dr. Ide served on
the Medway School Committee
until the 1850s and became the
first librarian of the West Parish
Library at the Parish House.
Friendly to slaves, he trained 40
men for the ministry, including
his son-in-law Charles Torrey,
who became active in the Underground
Railroad.
Dubrawski says the Historical
Society would like the Ide House
to be open at least once per week,
and they hope to host a Holiday
Open House in 2018, where
teams of volunteers decorate particular
locations in the house. The
group recently purchased cataloging
software and will work to get
all items into its new Past Perfect
museum software. Displays would
be enhanced by standard labeling
on all items, she says, with a scanner
ready to go. Volunteers will
be needed.
“There is lots to be done, and
we are very excited and thankful
for the opportunity to make Medway’s
history central to the community,”
says Dubrawski, who
joined the group by simply helping
out with a newsletter in 2013.
“Everyone is welcome. No special
qualifications needed. And
if you love history and Medway,
you are guaranteed to enjoy the
experience.
The Jacob Ide house is now the property of the Town of Medway, thanks
to voters at the Fall 2017 Town Meeting. The site, purchased with CPA
funds for $525,000, is slated to become the new headquarters for the
Medway Historical Society.
For more information on the
Medway Historical Society email
info@medwayhistoricalsociety.org.
In addition to the purchase of
the Ide House, Medway voters at
the Fall Town meeting voted to
purchase the building and 12.497
acres of land at 123 Holliston
Street, the current site of the
V.F.W. With membership declining,
Dennis Crowley explained to
voters, the V.F.W. can no longer
afford to maintain the property
and would likely sell the property.
The town’s purchase of the
property would avoid any future
unfriendly 40B projects on the
site, allow the V.F.W. to rent the
building for three years at no cost
In addition to the V.F.W.
purchase, town voters voted to
borrow $2.8 million for capital
projects to improve Choate Park,
Oakland Park and Medway Middle
School. This parks improvement
project was supplemented
by a vote for an additional $2
Germain. “We’re also going to
The first “Look-Ahead” noted
that, at the end of the project,
160 trees would be planted as
The new Clyde Brown Elementary
School move in date
will be September 2019, says
Germain, a time focused on to
ease transition for the students.
Millis Superintendent Nancy
Gustafson is also excited to see
the project moving ahead.
“It’s exciting,” she says. “The
ground-breaking is just a nice
way to celebrate the town coming
together to do something
great for the children.” Gustafson
says the children will be involved
in the ceremony, as the second
graders will be the first fifth grade
class in the building. “The first
step was ordering the little plastic
hardhats for them,” she says.
Clyde Brown principal Jason
Phelps is working with teachers
to make children’s participation
in the groundbreaking a learning
experience.
“He’d like to have kids learn
something from the ceremony
about civic engagement and
the workings of government on
a local level, and also, they’ll be
watching the construction process,
so they’ll be learning a lot
that way as well,” says Gustafson.
With the construction site
fencing off the existing playground,
Phelps has purchased
a few materials to construct a
“peaceful playground,” and he is
also working to develop alternate
physical activities that can take
place on the fields, according to
the Superintendent. In addition
to some structured activities for
recess times, says Gustafson, the
goal is for kids to also have some
free, creative play. “We’re brainstorming
what that will look
like,” she says. Weather permitting,
that may include snow play,
and “we’ll be teaching kids some
traditional games and providing
simple equipment, such as cones
and jump ropes, so they can create
obstacle courses – all those
creative things where people will
develop and make sure kids are
not just standing around during
recesses.
Terpsichore is the muse of
dancing and literally can be interpreted
as “delight dancing”
and this sums up our mission. In
our tenth year, we are providing
students with the opportunity to
explore dance on a variety of levels.
First, we provide free classes
for students of all abilities and
interest levels. These classes serve
to expose students to a variety
of dance styles and allow them
the opportunity to develop their
skills. Many of our participants
have not taken formal dance,
and we want to provide them a
safe and fun environment to explore
the dancing arts. Second,
we work to find existing and/
or create our own performance
opportunities in dance for our
members. Finally, as we grow our
organization we plan on adding
dance theory, history, and choreography
to our repertoire.
This production is our primary
source of fundraising for
our yearly programming, If you
Living Healthy
Flashes and Floaters
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Many patients will be aware
of small flying “black spots”
in the field of vision in one or
both eyes. These are called floaters
and may be associated with
flashes of light. Flashes and floaters
may have serious implications
on the vision.
What are floaters?
Floaters are small black shadows
in the vision of one or both
eyes, especially when looking at a
specific surface like a white page,
a bright sky or perhaps when
walking on the beach. These
black spots are impurities in the
fluid that fills the back cavity of
the eye. This jelly fluid is called
the “vitreous” and is a thick fluid
which has a consistency similar to
“egg white”. This vitreous fluid is
present in the eye from birth, and
is not replaced or exchanged during
life. It is initially attached to
the surface of the retina, which
is the light sensitive nerve tissue
layer that lines the back surface
of the wall of the eye. It is important
to note that it is not necessarily
abnormal to see black spots in
the vision. The size and number
of floaters seen is variable; some
patients (especially short sighted
people) will be aware of numerous
floaters, while others may
never be aware of the symptom
at all. Some floaters can interfere
severely with vision, while others
are barely noticeable. Although
annoying, floaters are usually
harmless, and come and go over
the years.
What are flashes?
Flashes are usually caused by
the vitreous body tugging on the
retina. This tugging occurs when
the vitreous body shrinks as a
normal part of the aging process.
Flashes may last for a few
seconds or several minutes, and
can occur on and off for weeks or
months. They are usually seen at
Flipside Gymnastics
Preschool & School Age • Team Gymnastics
Camps/Clinincs • Open Gym • Dance/Gym Combo
Extreme Night Parties • Birthday Parties
night or in poor lighting.
Eye migraine can cause
the perception of similar light
flashes, although often these
flashes of light may have numerous
colors. The abnormal light
flashes seen with migraines are
usually very different, appearing
as jagged lines blocking an area
of vision or moving slowly across
the field of vision in one or both
eyes. People who suffer from migraine
headaches will often know
the familiar pattern of these visual
experiences, often occurring
just before the headaches
begin. These migraine flashes are
unrelated to the vitreous body
and its attachment to the retina.
What causes flashes
and floaters?
The vitreous is composed of
collagen, and this undergoes
structural changes with age,
and will become more liquid
like and watery in later life. At
some point, the chemical bonds
that link the vitreous fluid to the
surface of the retina will become
weaker and the vitreous jelly will
separate from the retina. This
process is called posterior vitreous
detachment or PVD and
is a normal consequence of
aging. Approximately half of us
will have a PVD in one or both
eyes by the age of 60. PVD will
often cause us to notice the sudden
onset of new floaters, often
associated with flashes of light.
Unfortunately, the vitreous body
is sometimes more firmly attached
to the surface of the retina
and may pull away a piece of
the retina or tear the retina as it
separates. This can cause fluid to
escape, pushing the retina off the
inside of the eye. This is known
as retinal detachment, which is a
serious threat to sight. Surgery is
needed to reattach the retina if a
retinal detachment occurs.
When should I seek help?
See your ophthalmologist if
new floaters appear, with or without
sudden light flashes. Any loss
of peripheral (side) vision should
be investigated without a delay.
Your ophthalmologist will give
you a complete eye examination.
Drops are put in the eyes to
enlarge the pupils and determine
whether PVD, retinal tear, retinal
detachment or bleeding is present.
If you have occasional floaters
and flashes, you should have
an annual eye examination.
Symptoms of a PVD most
often occur in one eye at a
time. Even though your ophthalmologist
will check both eyes at
the first visit, it is important to
realize that if similar symptoms
are experienced in the other eye,
you should see your ophthalmologist
again with the onset of new
flashes or floaters as you could be
having a PVD in this eye.
Is there any treatment
for flashes and floaters?
Flashes and floaters are usually
just annoying, not harmful.
However, they can be signs
of serious problems (like a
tear on the retina) and, for this
reason, must not be ignored.
For most people, treatment is not
necessary. Floaters and flashes
usually subside over time, causing
no permanent deterioration
to vision.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use state-of-the-art laser
technology to treat a variety of
eye problems, including retinal
tears with full evaluation of
flashes and floaters. When those
are associated with a retinal tear,
we have in our practice a dedicated
retina specialist specializing
in the treatment of retinal
eye disease. Our retina specialist
is an internationally known expert
in his filed, and is on staff at
Harvard Medical School. We are
the area’s leading eye care practice,
and we continue to bring
you world class eye care closer to
Gingerbread Festival at Medway Public Library
Friends of the Medway Library
will hold its annual Gingerbread
Festival on Saturday,
December 16th in the library’s
Cole Room. Children of all ages
are invited to show off their creativity
by decorating their very
own mini gingerbread houses.
Admission is one bag of candy
to share.
There will be two sessions,
each limited to 65 children. Sign
up for the 10 a.m. or the 11:30
a.m. time slots online via the
Medway Library website. Space
is limited for this very popular
event, but a waiting list will be
available.
Last year, the Cole Room was
full of children having a wonderful
time creating colorful houses
using a wide range of candies,
ranging from licorice to snowcaps,
gumdrops to candy canes,
chocolate to peppermints. The
biggest challenge is to avoid eating
the decorations.
During December, be sure to
You Can Be Part of the Christmas Bird Count!
Millis Circle to Bird, Gather Data on
December 16th for National Audubon Effort
By J.D. O’Gara
It’s been a tradition for 118
years, 47 years in this area, and
you can join in! For over a century,
the National Audubon
Society has conducted the annual
“Christmas Bird Count” to
gather information about bird
species populations.
“It started in New York City,
and is now in this hemisphere
from Canada and Alaska all the
way down to the tip of South
America,” says Elissa Landre, Director
of Massachusetts Audubon
Society’s Broadmoor Sanctuary
at 280 Eliot Street, Natick. The
“Millis Circle Count,” she says
will take place in the 24-hour period
of Saturday, December 16th.
“The circle I compile for is
centered in Millis, Mass.,” says
Landre. “Each circle is 15 miles
in diameter.” The Millis Circle
includes such towns as Holliston,
Norfolk, Wrentham, Franklin,
Millis, Medfield, Medway, Sherborn
and Hopkinton—just a
handful in the radius.
“The intent is to count every
bird you can within each circle
during a 24-hour period,” says
Landre. Starting at midnight on
Saturday the 16th and going to
11:59 p.m. the evening of the
16th, novice ornithologists in
those areas, both in teams led by
captains at certain locations in the
area or right in their own backyards,
keep a tally of every bird,
reporting the largest group of one
type of bird that they see at one
time.
“It started in 1972 in Millis,”
says Landre, who heads up the
team in Holliston. She says anyone
can volunteer to participate
in the count. She assigns team
leaders, such as Jack Lash, of
Franklin, who will be bringing
students out in the field in that
area this year, and Skipper Farwell,
of Norfolk, who heads up a
team at MCI Norfolk.
“I assign people, says Landre.
“They get in touch with me
through the Mass Audubon website
(www.massaudubon.org) and
let me know, so I can cover as
many areas as possible. There are
some groups that go out for owls
in the predawn hours of Saturday
morning, and others start closer
to seven. I start at Broadmoor
and bird for a couple hours here,
then head to Sherborn and Holliston.”
Landre says folks can just bird
at their feeders for a minimum of
15 minutes.
“You count, for example, every
chickadee you see at one point in
time. If people feed birds and
want to keep track of what they
see and report that, that would
be great,” she says.” You’re going
to count only the maximum
number of birds you see at any
one time of the same species for
a minimum of 15 minutes. The
point is to try not to double count,
although that even happens in the
field.”
The group later gathers at
Broadmoor for soup and a wrapup,
with sector leaders report
what they’ve seen. Landre submits
the data to the national level.
Over the long period of time
the count has taken place, trends
and changes in bird populations
have become evident.
“Any one year will give you a
snapshot, but it won’t give you
enough data to look at trends.
If you look over a longer period
of time, you see trends, and you
have to ask yourself why.”
Some of the changes, for example,
have been a dip in scavenger
species such as herring gulls
and fish crows.
“We think we know why,” says
Landre. In early years, when the
Christmas Bird Count first began
in the area, there were many
open dumps. “All those gulls and
crows ended up at the dumps.”
Nowadays, these areas have been
turned into recycling centers and
treatment facilities, so the scavengers
moved on.
Another change, says Landre,
is an increase in some species not
seen here in the 1970s or 1980s.
“The Carolina Wren is moving
up from the south, and so is
the red-bellied woodpecker,” she
says. “Milder winters could make
it easier for them to survive.”
Loss of habitat has decimated
other bird populations in
the area, such as the American
Kestrel, and hairy woodpeckers
BIRD COUNT
continued from page 16
in population with the increase
or decline in acorn production,
something that can be affected by
gypsy moths.
Each year, about 40-45 people
take place in the Millis Circle of
the Christmas Bird Count, but
there is always room for more.
“It’s fun for people who are
hardy,” says Landre. “I will find
a place for anybody that wants to
do it. The more eyes out there,
the better the count. A family
could bird their back yard if they
wanted to.”
As coordinator, Landre works
to make sure no two groups are
counting the same birds, so she
asks anyone interested to contact
her before taking part.
If you are interested in being
part of the Christmas Bird
Count on December 16th, email
Broadmoorprograms@massaudubon.org.
In preparation, you might
also want to check out A Special
Lecture: State of the Birds, on
December 14, from 7:30-8:30
p.m. at the Broadmoor Wildlife
Sanctuary in Natick. Instructor
Joan Walsh, Mass Audubon’s
Bertrand Chair of Natural History
and Field Ornithology will
discuss which bird species are
thriving and which are in trouble,
and why that might be. Registration
is required for the program,
which costs $15 for nonmembers
and $12 for members, is available
Ages 7 and up. Register in advance.
Baba made Nicki some beautiful
snow white mittens and made
him promise he would take care
of them. Well, Nicki lost one of
his mittens when he was playing
outside one day and a few animals
found the mitten and thought it
made a nice, cozy home. The animals
did not want to give the mitten
back to Nicki, so they locked
the mitten up in a box. Nicki needs
to open up the box and get his mitten
back before the time is up and
he needs to get home to Baba.
Can you help him?
Medway Civil War
Vets Honored with
Headstones
On Saturday, November
11th, the Medway Historical
Society and the 13th Massachusetts
Volunteer Infantry Honor
Guard executed a Civil War reenactment
of a twenty-one gun
salute to consecrate the headstones
of six Civil War Veterans
that were recently identified in a
mass grave. Henry Dain, Egbert
Hixon, Albert Houghton, Lewis
Miller, George Read, and John
Treen and the other 65 Civil War
Veterans interred in Oakland
Cemetery were honored this year
on Veterans Day.
November 15, 2017
Dear Editor:
Thank you for your coverage
of the Medway Historical
Commission’s project to identify
and mark the gravesite of
six Medway soldiers who died
during or following their service
in the Civil War and who were
buried at Oakland Cemetery in
an unmarked mass grave. The
project culminated in a touching
ceremony at the gravesite last
Saturday, Veterans’ Day, which
was very well-attended and
certainly a credit to the Town
of Medway and all those who
worked so hard for several years
to see the project through to its
fruition.
I would like to share a history
of how it came to be and
give proper credit to Medway
Historical Commission member
Paul Russell. When former
Commission member Mark
Wilcox, who initially discovered
in 2013 that this unmarked
gravesite existed and who consulted
with author and Civil
War historian Tom Ellis about
getting it marked, had to leave
the Commission, Paul Russell
was determined to carry on the
project. The Oakland Cemetery
groundskeeper/custodian,
Bill McLaughlin, located an
old map of the cemetery which
showed the soldiers’ names:
Henry Dain, Egbert O. Hixon,
Albert C. Houghton, Louis S.
Miller, George H. Reade, and
John S. Treen.
Having found the names,
Mr. Russell then researched the
backgrounds of the veterans,
consulting the Massachusetts
and Ohio Adjutant Generals’
records from the Civil War,
along with Jameson’s History of
Medway up to 1885, and other
sources. With this information
in hand, he submitted the necessary
forms to obtain six engraved
stones at no cost from
the Department of Veterans Affairs;
the stones were delivered
last winter. In the spring, he arranged
for trenches to be dug,
footings poured, and the stones
set, all the work performed by
companies which volunteered
their time and materials: Jefferson
C. Bailey Masonry and Kai
Nalenz (Gravestone Services of
New England). The Community
Preservation Committee
approved Mr. Russell’s request
to purchase a flagpole, and
Oakland Cemetery’s caretaker,
Roger Cummings, contributed
the flag and arranged for landscaping.
This accomplished, Mr.
Russell asked Mr. Ellis to help
organize a dedication ceremony,
which he did. Mr. Ellis
contacted the 13th Massachusetts
Volunteer Infantry Honor
Guard, who came in full period
costume, marched into the
cemetery, and offered a 21-gun
salute. Mr. Ellis also invited
trumpeter Samuel Jacobs, from
Medway High School, to play
Taps to end the ceremony.
Historical Society President
Sheila Dubrawski acted as Master
of Ceremonies for the event
and pulled it all together. Once
again, thank you to everyone
who contributed to making this
happen, and thank you for covering
this tribute to these six
Civil War veterans.
Sincerely yours,
Jeanne Johnson
Charles Ladies’ Golf League Says Final Farewell
By J.D. O’Gara
When the Toll Brothers move
forward with their plan for a
324-unit senior residential community
on the 230-acre parcel
on which the Glen Ellen Country
Club has sat for 54 years, another
era will have ended – that of the
Charles Ladies’ Golf League.
The group of 40 women, including
eight “subs,” who played
every Wednesday afternoon, met
for a final farewell in late October
with a dinner at Restaurant
45 in Medway.
The League was established
in 1976, when Mary Ariel, a
local golfer, and Dan Cross, the
pro at Glen Ellen Country Club,
invited the wives and friends of
the Charles Men’s League to
join the afternoon league, which
started at 3:15 p.m. with foursomes
playing into the evening.
The women were offered the use
of The Charles Restaurant as an
“after golf ” location, and Don
Cross donated fifty cents of his
$3 greens fee for each member
who wanted to learn to play golf.
Sue Locklin, who’s lived in
Millis since 1960, found the ladies’
golf league after the premature
passing of her husband,
then the Chief of Police in Millis.
“I wanted to do something
different, that we didn’t do together,”
says Locklin. She asked
her friend Janet Walsh, then a
school secretary for the Clyde
Brown Elementary School, if
she’d be interested in taking golf
lessons through the Millis Recreation
Department. Once they
learned, she says, “we wanted to
join the league, and they were
happy to have us.”
“They were so nice to us,
patient, and we were swinging
and swinging, and sometimes, it
would take 16 shots to get to the
hole,” says Walsh.
The golf league was a blessing
to the women, who’d grown up
viewing the sport as male dominated,
as well as one only wealthy
Shown are the last members of the Charles Ladies’ Golf League, who
bid their final farewells to their afternoon group at Restaurant 45 in
Medway. The group will dissolve with the planned development at the
location of the Glen Ellen Country Club in Millis.
people played.
“It was something to look
forward to. It was outside; it was
good exercise, and there were
some wonderful people, and the
older people and the younger
people intermixing – I think it
keeps everybody younger,” says
Locklin.
Walsh equates losing the golf
league to losing a good friend.
“I joined the League in 1983
and consider my golf days some
of the very best times of my life,”
says Walsh, who always kept
Wednesday, golf day, sacred,
missing it only for family events
or medical problems. “Golfers
are a fun group to spend time
with. Yes, we are competitive, but
half the time during a game, we
root for our opponent with ‘good
shot,’ or ‘great putt.’ I am so glad
I have had the camaraderie of
my golf friends over the years.”
“I wouldn’t have met all these
wonderful women if I hadn’t
joined,” says Pat Diatelevi, of
Millis, who has been a member
of the Charles Ladies’ Golf
League since 1986. “I’ve made
many friends, and I’m just so sad
that it’s not going to happen anymore.”
Kim Latosek, of Millis, whose
father played in the men’s league,
says she always appreciated that
the group matched players of
certain ability. Mary O’Leary, a
30-year member from Medway,
agrees. “I learned how to play
golf at Glen Ellen. I went from a
D, to a C, to a B, to an A, and at
83, I’m back to a D,” she laughs.
“I like the friendships and the attitude
of the group. No matter
what level, you’re accepted.”
Even the newest players, like
Wendy Barry, who just joined as
a sub this year, speak to the camaraderie.
“This is my first year,
and last. They took me under
their wing,” says Barry, of Millis,
who heard about the league
through friends Val Hughes and
Kelly O’Brien, of Holliston.
“I can’t say enough about the
league,” says Holliston resident
Photo courtesy of Charles Ladies’ Golf League
Joyce Schiff, whose house is just
two miles from the Glen Ellen.
“There are ladies in their 80s
and ladies in their 30s and 40s,
and it’s like they’ve known you
forever. I’m very sad Glen Ellen
is going away.”
Mary Lucey, formerly of Millis
and now of Medfield, adds,
“It’s all about the peeps. I can
join any league, but it’s not the
Charles Ladies Golf League.”
Some of the group will continue
getting together as foursomes,
making tee times at
other golf courses such a Brookmeadow
Country Club in Canton.
Some of the older members,
however, who don’t feel like doing
the 40-minute drive home in the
dark, will stop playing altogether.
And it’s something they’ll
surely miss.
“Glen Ellen, it’s beautiful out
there. All the years we played, the
fairways have been kept up - just
gorgeous,” says Walsh. “To think
they’re going to tear it down and
put housing up there is a little
hard to understand.”
Sports
Millis Returns to Super Bowl
By Christopher Tremblay
For the second straight year,
Millis took a trip to the Super
Bowl. Millis finished the season
10-1 (5-0 in league play) and
earned themselves a spot in the
Division 8 South Tournament
where they defeated three top
notch teams to get the chance to
play for the Super Bowl Championship.
In getting to the Championship
game, Millis took out West
Bridgewater 49-20; the number
two seed and undefeated, St.
John Paul II 42-14 and Wareham,
the number one seed,
31-18 before heading to the
State Tournament, where they
defeated Cathedral (9-1) 40-22
in the Semi Finals.
“Coming into the season we
didn’t expect to repeat, but we
felt we had a pretty good group
of athletes coming back having
only graduated a few players
from last year’s Super Bowl
team,” Coach Dana Olson said.
“You not only have to play well,
but you have to have your ducks
in a row and the ball also has to
bounce your way too.”
The season opened on September
8 with a 24-7 loss to
Holliston, Millis’ only loss of the
season, but despite the loss Olson
saw the good from that game.
“If you rewind back to that
first game against Holliston, I
felt that we played a really good
game, but we had a couple of
bounces that didn’t go our way,”
the coach said. “Since then, we
consistently continued to get better
as the year went along, and I
think that we’re playing our best
football at this point.”
Having grabbed their first
Super Bowl victory since 1999
last fall, Millis came in well prepared
and ready to make a run
at returning to the title game.
Throughout the season Millis,
who plays in the Tri-Valley
League, went up against schools
two and three times their size but
once they got into the tournament
they were playing at their
weight class.
Millis possess a double threat
in the arm of senior quarterback
Bryce Latosek and the legs of
tailback Kurt Hopkins. Against
West Bridgewater Latosek went
17-18 on his passes with five
touchdowns, the next game Millis
was given the run and took it;
Cathedral opted to defend Hopkins,
who only gained 60 yards
on 17 carries.
While Hopkins was held in
check, Latosek took through the
air and posted 379 yards and four
touchdowns en route to the victory
and Millis’ second straight
trip to the Super Bowl. On the
third play of the game, the Millis
quarterback hit senior Dom Zonfrelli
for a 72-yard touchdown
pass. The two hooked up early
in the second quarter and Millis
had themselves a 16-0 lead and
would put up 33 points before
the half came to an end.
At the time of Local Town Pages
publication, Millis was set to play
Hoosac Valley, who put a beating
on Nashoba Tech 76-34, at Gillette
Stadium the first weekend
of December. While the team
is enthusiastic about playing at
Gillette, the coach feels that last
year’s venue at Worcester State
was better suited for the squad.
“The kids are excited, but
in Worcester you have 5,000
fans, and you can hear them,
I’m not sure you’re going to get
the same type of volume with
5,000 at Gillette,” Olson said.
Local Town Pages will follow up
with the game results in our next
issue.
Medway’s Childs Gets
Scholarship to Play
Basketball at BU
Sports
By Ken Hamwey,
Staff Sports Writer
The future is in clear focus for
Riley Childs.
Medway High’s talented offguard,
who was a first-team Tri
Valley League all-star last year,
has verbally committed to play
basketball at Boston University
after she completes her senior
season for the Mustangs.
The 5-foot-11 Childs averaged
17 points, 8 rebounds and
3 assists last year when Medway
posted a 14-8 record and split a
pair of playoff games. A threesport
athlete, she’s been an outside
hitter in volleyball for four
years and she also has posted
some impressive numbers in outdoor
track. She holds the school
record in the shot put (33 feet,
1 inch) and she’s only 11 inches
away from tying the school record
in the discus, which is 119-8.
“I’m thrilled about getting a
full scholarship to Boston University,’’
Childs said. “I like the
city, and all the coaches and players
were great to be around when
I visited. It’s a situation that just
feels right. I’ve verbally committed,
and I’m just waiting now for
final acceptance.’’
The Terriers head coach,
Katy Steading, did most of the
scouting on Childs. But, it was at
a BU camp for potential recruits,
where Childs impressed Steading.
“She saw me the summer
before my junior year,’’ Childs
said. “And, she also saw me play
several other times. Schools like
Holy Cross, Lehigh and Bucknell
also showed interest, but I
selected BU after they offered me
a scholarship.’’
Childs said that Steading was
optimistic about her addition to
the Terrier squad but made no
promises about her role. “She
said I’d have to earn my playing
time, and that’s the way it should
be,’’ Childs said.
A native of Medway, Childs,
who is 330 points away from
reaching 1,000 career points
at Medway, has a variety of
strengths. She’s quick, has a high
basketball IQ, her court vision
is excellent, she penetrates to
the basketball and her release is
quick and high. She has a wing
span of six feet, an attribute that
makes her a threat on defense.
“I like to drive to the hoop
for a layup or a pull-up jumper,’’
Childs emphasized. “I’m a fair
three-point shooter, but I need to
improve in that area. Although I
consider myself as a dependable
defender, I can be better on steals
and deflections.’’
Joe Iannone, Childs’ coach at
Medway, calls her the most versatile
player he’s coached in his
nine years on the job. “Riley can
play point guard or center,’’ he
said. “We use her wherever we
need to. She can score inside or
on the perimeter. She was our
top rebounder last year, and she’s
a very good passer who has great
court vision.’’
Two of Childs’ best games
came last year at Norton and
against at Medway when the
Mustangs faced Nashoba in the
first round of the tourney.
“I hit five of six three-pointers
against Norton and finished with
23 points,’’ she recalled. “I also
played a strong game on defense
in the victory. Against Nashoba,
the atmosphere was exciting because
it was a playoff game at our
gym. There were lots of friends
and relatives on hand. We won,
but what was nice was that everyone
played a solid overall game.’’
Childs was a captain in volleyball
this season and she’s been
selected by her teammates and
coach to be a captain in basketball.
“I’m a vocal kind of captain,’’
she noted. “I’ll also try to
lead by example, and if a younger
play needs help or advice, I’ll be
more than glad to assist.’’
With her future in college assured,
Childs hasn’t lost sight of
the year ahead for Medway. Her
goal is to make it four straight
years of qualifying for the tourney.
“We’ll have to work hard,
because we’re a young team,’’ she
said. “But, it’s realistic, because
we’ve got girls with a strong work
ethic who compete hard against
Tri Valley League teams.’’
Childs points to Medway’s
other captain, Meg Downing,
and freshman Lauren Beach, as
quality players. She’s also bullish
on the job Joe Iannone does
as the team’s coach. “Meg and
I have played basketball since
the sixth grade,’’ Childs said.
“A point guard who’s a strong
defender, she’s also an excellent
passer. Lauren has height,
is a threat inside and she can
rebound. Coach Iannone is a
Riley Childs is a top-notch student-athlete who should have another
terrific season of basketball for the Mustangs before her career at
BU begins.
Norfolk Community League’s
Annual Santa’s Breakfast!
This will be held Saturday,
December 2nd from 9-10.30
a.m. at the H. Olive Day School,
in the cafeteria. There will be a
sing-a-long and a visit from Santa
himself! This will be a continental
breakfast and treats for all
ages. Admission, Children ages
1-12: $10 NCL member/$12
non-member. Adults that are
NCL members are free and
$4 for non-members. Children
under 12 months are free.
competitive guy who is a great
motivator and communicator.’’
An honor-roll student, Childs
plans on majoring in broadcast
journalism at BU. Acutely aware
that there’ll be a transition period
going from high school all-star to
Division 1 rookie, Childs knows
where she’ll have to improve.
“My overall game will need to
get better, but I also know I need
to get stronger and faster,’’ she
said. “I’ll be focusing on weight
training a lot.’’
Childs relies on a competitive
philosophy that stresses being the
best she can be in her specific role.
“Reaching my potential in whatever
role I play is the key,’’ Childs
noted. “And, it’s important to absorb
the life lessons that one can
learn from athletics. Becoming a
leader and being responsible are
solid lessons to be learned. Sports
also build confidence.’’
Caller her father (Rich) a
role model for his support and
encouragement, Childs is looking
forward to a solid basketball
campaign that will lead to a new
experience at BU.
“I’ve enjoyed my friends, and
I’ve built great relationships at
Medway High,’’ she said. “It’ll
be sad to not play volleyball and
basketball again at Medway, but
I’m excited and happy that a new
chapter will be unfolding after I
graduate.’’
Millis-Hopedale Hockey Co-Op Now a Five-School Mix
By Christopher Tremblay
Last year the Hopedale-
Millis hockey team earned their
first tournament appearance in
their five-year existence of the
program. After going 10-9-1,
Hopedale-Millis earned a six
seed in the Division 3A Central
Tournament, but unfortunately
lost to Grafton, the eventual Division
3 State Champion, 2-1 in
double overtime.
decent numbers, but in order to
be successful, we needed to build
a junior varsity team that would
act as our feeder program.”
LaBossiere said being the
coach of the five schools that are
involved in the program is a lot
of work, but he sees the progress
moving forward on the ice.
“It’s not an easy thing to
manage five Athletic Directors,
making sure they communicate
with the athletes. It’s hard
“As an eighth grader, Colin
played on the junior varsity
team, but didn’t really see that
much action that first year,”
LaBossiere said. “The next two
years he played with the varsity
team, but it was last year that he
really emerged as one of our top
defenders.”
Sanchioni, a junior defender,
has been with the team since his
freshman year while another junior,
Drew O’Reilly, has played
forward for both the JV and
Varsity squads. On the JV team
O’Reilly found himself as a top
line forward, but when he suited
up for the varsity team he skated
on the third line. LaBossiere is
hoping that this year he can step
his game up and step into one of
the top two lines for the Raiders.
As a first-year defender last
winter, Brooks found himself
bouncing between the JV and
Varsity teams, this year he’s
going to be looked upon to take
his game to the next level.
“In addition to his defensive
game, he is also a very good offensive
threat,” the coach said.
“With a ton of defensemen, we
may need to move some up to
play offense, and he may be one
of those individuals.”
LaBossiere is hoping that the
five-town squad came come together
sooner than later and
make another run at the tournament,
and the Millis players will
be a key component to the Raiders’
success.
The Millis-Hopedale hockey connection that began five years ago is
entering its sixth year with players from Milford (added last year), and
this year, from Douglas and Whitinsville-Christian. The added schools
may draw the depth of players needed to see tournament play again
this year.
Your Vision;
Our Mission
After having their best season
with 10 wins, the squad graduated
only two seniors and should
be in good shape to get back to
the tournament this upcoming
season.
“We lost two seniors, but they
were big parts to our team,”
Coach Greg LaBossiere said.
“We are still looking to get further
this season and go deeper
into the tournament t than we
did last year.”
Now in the sixth year of existence,
the Raiders have added
Douglas and Whitinsville-Christian
as well as Milford last year
to the co-op program, giving
them the added depth the bigger
schools already have in their
hockey program.
“We’ve had a great relationship
with football (Hopedale
and Millis) and being able to
add Milford has really helped.
Being so close to one another
a lot of the kids were friends
already,” the Coach said. “As a
team, we’ve continued to have
enough to deal with one, never
mind five,” he said. “When I
first took over this program, we
had some big personalities on
the team that were already set
in their ways. It’s tough to mold
the older kids, but through the
years, the younger kids bought
into our system, and we have
continued to grow.”
This past year, the new program
was to get new uniforms,
so LaBossiere looked to his team
for input. The players decided
on a red, white and blue uniform
with the Raider emblem on the
front of their jersey. Looking
to wear the new jerseys with
pride from Millis will be Colin
Burgess, Peter Sanchioni, Drew
O’Reilly, Craig Brooks and John
Register O’Donnell Hosts
Computer Seminar
Continuing his efforts to provide
outreach to Norfolk County
communities, Register of Deeds
William P. O’Donnell recently
hosted a free informational seminar
on computer assisted land
record research.
At the seminar, attendees
learned how to navigate the Registry’s
online research page www.
norfolkdeeds.org and to access
documents such as deeds, mortgage
discharges, Homesteads
and other land related materials.
The Norfolk County Registry of
Deeds state-of-the-art computer
system has more than 6 million
land document images available
for viewing, dating back to 1793.
Register O’Donnell noted,
“We are very proud that all of
our land documents are online
and are accessible within 24
business hours of recording. The
feedback we have received from
attendees indicates these computer
seminars are very useful for
real estate professionals, genealogists
and members of the general
public alike.”
For further information, you
can contact Alicia Gardner at
(781) 461-6104 or at agardner@
of Deeds is located at 649 High
Street in Dedham. The Registry
is a resource for homeowners,
title examiners, mortgage lenders,
municipalities and others
with a need for secure, accurate,
accessible land record information.
All land record research
Client Testimonial to Robin & Mark Spangenberg.
“My husband and I recently have taken on the challenge of searching
for our first home. We had so many questions and didn’t know exactly
where to start. We were referred to Robin and Mark by a close friend.
We had a long list of ‘must haves’ and ‘wish-we-hads’. Robin and Mark
looked at this list and helped us view many great houses and in the end
helped us find a perfect house! They listened to our needs and helped
us understand the buying process. (They gave us mortgage people,
inspection people, lawyer options and more). I would highly recommend
this amazing couple for any house searching needs.”
