That building, once an auto repair shop that is used mostly for storage, has been in
Robert Richard’s family for decades, he said last week. He hopes to sell the property to
Louis P. Minicucci, Jr., president of Minco Corp., who is proposing to turn it into 25
She is enthusiastic about introducing “Puggle in a Pouch,” her light verses
“Nina Tanis’s drawings add book’s humor, which I wrote to delight children
The cookie program is the largest girlled
business in the world, and this
Community Forum to Gain
Citizen Input on Community's
Next Town Manager
The Ipswich Board of Selectmen is pleased to announce it has scheduled
a community forum on December 7, 2017 at 7:00 PM to give citizens the
opportunity to share their thoughts on the qualifications and characteristics
they believe Ipswich’s next Town Manager should possess.
The forum will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the
Ipswich Town Hall in Room A.
“We are interested in hearing citizens’ recommendations regarding
the expertise and qualifications they would like to see in their next Town
Manager,” said William Craft, Chairman of the Ipswich Board of Selectmen.
“It is important that Ipswich’s citizens are an integral part of the Town
Manager selection process.”
The Town has hired the consulting firm Community Paradigm Associates,
LLC, to assist in the search process. Representatives from the firm, including
Principal Bernard Lynch, will attend the community forum along with
representatives of the Board of Selectmen.
Current Town Manager Robin Crosbie announced in August that she
would be retiring in February of 2018. Ms. Crosbie has served as Ipswich’s
Town Manager since 2012.
Girl Scout Cookies Now on Sale For Limited Time
Troops Use Program Proceeds to Fund Adventure That Build Girls' Skills and Confidence
the best-selling new cookie flavor
ever with its introduction last year.
Cookies are $5 per package in eastern
Massachusetts.
“Through the Girl Scout cookie
program, girls learn how to become
leaders by building and managing
their own cookie business, all while
earning proceeds to fund their Girl
Scout troop adventures,” says Patricia
A. Parcellin, Chief Executive Officer,
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts.
“Customers can take pride in knowing
their cookie purchase supports girls of
courage, confidence and character on
their individual leadership journeys,
as well our Girl Scout council, which
provides a safe, all-girl, girl-led,
and girl-friendly environment with
programming customized by grade
level.”
Powered by Cookies - When girls
participate in the Girl Scout Cookie
Program, they find a safe, girl-only
space to have unique experiences and
learn essential life skills, including
goal setting, decision making, money
management, people skills, and
business ethics.
The confidence and skills girls
develop help them take healthy risks
to embrace the growing opportunities
of daily life, and empower them to
make decisions to positively affect
themselves, their families, and their
communities.
New Technology Makes it Easy to
Find Cookies - With the improved
“Cookie Finder” mobile app and
online “Cookie Finder,” it’s easy to find
cookies near home, work, or school.
Typing a zip code into the Cookie
Finder on gsema.org and the Girl
Scout Cookie Finder App generates a
list of upcoming cookie booth sales.
Girls still sell door-to-door, but more
often host booth sales, which may be
in front of a local supermarket, in a
bank lobby, at a T stop, or at another
public location. Anyone who knows a
Girl Scout and prefers to shop online
can order cookies directly from a girl’s
cookie website by using a unique URL
she can create and share with family
and friends. Payments are made
online and cookies ship directly to
customers; two-day shipping available
to 95% of the U.S. with no minimum
number of packages required.
Cookies for a Cause - Girl Scouts
can offer customers the chance to add
charitable cookie donations to their
orders, or to support their local Girl
Scouts even if they can’t enjoy the
cookies themselves. With Cookies
for a Cause, some troops identify
a local charitable organization to
support (food pantries, shelters, first
responders, etc.) and offer customers
the opportunity to buy cookies that
the troop will deliver directly to those
groups.
Girl Scouts also have the option to
collect cookie donations for United
States military for the annual Cookies
for a Cause event held at Hanscom
Air Force Base in the spring. Cookies
for a Cause is a GSEMA council-wide
initiative to say “thank you for your
service” with a donation of more than
20,000 packages of cookies to U.S.
military. At the event, girls can meet
military personnel, take photos, create
thank you cards to accompany cookie
care packages, and more! Girls can also
collect donations for the Cookies for a
Cause event through their usual sales
process throughout the season. The
cookies will then arrive at the Cookies
for a Cause event at Hanscom Air
Force Base!
Either way, cookie lovers can
support their local Girl Scouts while
bringing joy to others.

portrayed the lives of fourth graders
in a clichéd school environment
its own government, class system
and unwritten laws. The students
are ruled by a monarch, a sixth
grader named King Bob, who has
enforcers to make the students
follow his decrees. The society
has a long list of rigid values and
social norms that imposes a high
all the students.
characters, Fix wrote Christmas in
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
One of my dental hygienists
recently informed me of a new
series on the Investigation
Discovery cable channel called
“Deadly Dentists”. Apparently
there are enough stories out there
about dentists to make a series.
I looked the series up online and
despite my pre-conceived notion
about what the content would be,
the first episode is about a dentist
who is killed by his wife’s boyfriend.
I’ll probably stick to watching the
Bruins and hope I am never in an
episode.
However, the title of the series
did remind me about stories of
people dying in the dental office
and how important it is to be ready
for medical emergencies. A couple
years ago I remember a dentist
who was charged in the death of
a patient in Connecticut after 20
extractions and implants placed
in the same visit. The patient was
sedated by a method many dentists
(general and specialists) use called
conscious sedation. It is a very safe
method of sedation that usually
combines a couple of different
oral medications. Since respiration
can be affected with conscious
sedation, it is vital to measure
Medicare open enrollment
brings the scammers out in full
force. This is the time of year
(until Dec. 7) to decide whether
to keep your current Medicare
plan or make changes to it. Even
though the deadline for making
changes might have ended by the
time you read this, scammers have
all kinds of tricks up their sleeves:
* They might try to tell you that
open enrollment runs through the
end of December.
Brighter Smiles...
oxygen saturation and have the
proper equipment and plan in
place in case of an emergency.
It took a year for the charges to be
filed against the dentist. Apparently,
the Connecticut State Dental
Commission initially found that
the dentist was practicing within
the standard of care and didn’t
immediately revoke his license.
The allegations now are that the
dentist ignored warning signs of the
patient and also ignored warnings
from staff members to continue on
with treatment.
Most people cannot fathom
having 20 teeth pulled and implants
placed all at one visit. However, it is
a relatively common procedure and
the service is growing. So, in case
you were wondering whether the
dentist was doing too much at one
time, the answer is that it depends
who you are doing it on.
“The commission also found
that [the dentist] should not have
attempted to perform so many
procedures on [the patient] in
one office visit given that her
medical history included a heart
attack six months before the visit,
two strokes within the last two
years and medication that could
have affected her response to the
sedation.”
Do we assume the dentist knew
about all these circumstances that
made this patient a high risk to treat?
Let’s assume the patient divulged all
necessary medical information. It is
up to the dentist to decide whether
to treat or refer to a specialist that
* Thieves might say that new
cards will be coming with a new
number (that part is true), but
that you have to pay for the new
card (that part is a lie). The card
is free.
* They might claim to be from
Medicare and say that you won’t
get your new card until you
can verify the number on your
existing card. They’ll expect you
to read them all that information
over the phone.
* If you pay your premium with
automatic Easy Pay, scammers
might try to tell you that your
banking information has to be
entered into the system because of
the new card, and that you need to
give them your bank information
Deadly Dentists
Senior Scene
Open Enrollment Scams
can provide more options for
sedation and monitoring of vitals.
It is essential for the provider and
the patient to go over medical
history and concerns in detail. The
best interest of the patient should
be the forefront of that discussion.
This same dentist also allegedly
violated care standards a year
before when another patient under
conscious sedation to have teeth
extracted inhaled a piece of gauze
that was intended to prevent things
from going down the throat. The
patient was rushed to the hospital
and recovered.
Both of these situations are
unfortunate. Many people were
affected and one life was lost.
While it is impossible to determine
a definitive decision based on the
information available, it will be
important for the dentist to show
proper planning and reaction to
incidents.
Medical histories are very
important. Make sure to report
people telling you things like this,
HANG UP. They are scammers,
calling to get you to disclose your
One other warning: Your
caller ID is no longer accurate.
Scammers have figured out how
to make any number show up,
even your local hospital or the
Medicare office. They might be in
a foreign country and make your
caller ID look like they’re calling
ARIES (March 21 to April 19)
You’ve let yourself be distracted
from what’s really important. But
love finally gets your attention
this week. However, it comes
with a challenge that could create
a problem.
(c) 2017 King Features Syndicate, Inc. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)
Be careful not to bully others into
following your lead. Best advice: Persuade, don’t push, and you’ll
978-948-8696 • www.thetowncommon.com • advertise@thetowncommon.c
get the cooperation you need to move forward with your plans.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist the urge to gloat now that
you’ve proved your detractors wrong. Instead, charm them back
into your circle. Remember: A former foe can become your best
ally.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might want to claim all
the credit for making this holiday season special. But is it worth
producing a lot of hurt feelings by rejecting offers of help? Think
chuck them out before you check them out. You could be happily
surprised.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your holiday planning
might have to take a back seat for a bit so that you can handle a
problem with a friend or family member. Your schedule resumes by
the 9th.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships in general
benefit during the early part of the week, including in the workplace.
Also expect some overdue changes in a personal situation.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) “Prudence”
should be your watchword this week. Best not to be too open about
some of the things that are currently happening in your life.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Money is on your
mind, so you’d best mind how you’re spending it. Take another look
at that holiday budget and see where you can make adjustments.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resolving to revive an
old friendship could open some old wounds. Are you sure you want
to risk that? Think this through before making a commitment.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your need to know more
about a new friend could lead to some startling revelations. Best
advice: Keep an open mind about what you learn until all the facts
are in.
BORN THIS WEEK: Your loyalty to friends makes you a very
special person to those whose lives you’ve touched.
