SURGICAL TEAMS BRING
SAVINGS INTO FOCUS
The expression ‘Information is power’ is being translated by
WellStar surgeons into added value and a higher standard
of care for our patients, thanks to a new surgical “supply
receipt” program.
Leaders in WellStar’s Surgery service line learned the System’s
cost of surgical supplies was rising at a rate that outpaced
both inflation and revenue growth.
To combat the trend, a multidisciplinary team, led by Mark
Charlson, vice president of Surgery, and William Mayfield,
M.D., chief surgical officer, developed a new outcome-based
approach to identify each surgeon’s specific supply costs
– a surgeon’s receipt. This itemized statement, along with
comparative data showing variability of costs of the same
surgery performed by their peers, is then shared with surgeons.
The team worked to integrate
the EPIC ® and LAWSON ®
software systems to provide a
specific listing of each surgeon’s
supply use and associated costs.
They also factored in unused
and discarded supplies.
“I’ve been in practice for
30 years and have never had this
type of information before,” said Dr. Mayfield.
Have an idea on how to improve
processes and procedures in your
department? No idea is too small.
FOCUS button to submit an idea.
Although the program was just implemented in July, teams
are already seeing substantial value as compared to all of FY
2017. Supply costs for minimally invasive gall bladder removal
have reduced by 14.8 percent. Similarly, minimally invasive
inguinal hernia repair supply costs have decreased by 21.1
percent.
During a recent work session, WellStar Chief Surgical Officer Bill
Mayfield, M.D., (second from right) collaborated with hospital
Operating Room directors from across the System to standardize
trace-pack supplies used for laparoscopic surgery.
“We didn’t tell [our surgeons] to do anything with this
data,” said Charlson. “We simply provided them with the
information, and they immediately started taking actions to
impact cost-savings.”
WELLSTAR’S GENETICS
PROGRAM CELEBRATES
10 YEARS OF PROVIDING
CANCER RISK ASSESSMENT
Between five and 10 percent of cancers are diagnosed in
people with an inherited predisposition to increased risk.
Through genetic risk assessment, the WellStar Center for
Genetics and Individualized Medicine, now in its tenth year
of service, aims to stop cancer before it appears.
Housed in the WellStar Cancer Center at Kennestone Hospital,
the Center for Genetics and Individualized Medicine includes
custom-designed consultation rooms and an in-house lab
draw station. After determining whether genetic testing is
appropriate, WellStar genetic counselors test for specific
hereditary conditions known to increase the risk of various
cancers, cardiac conditions and other genetic disorders.
Counselors then recommend a specific plan based on
the results, which could include increased screenings,
lifestyle modifications and prophylactic medication/
procedures. Each patient’s individualized plan, presented
on an innovative video display, provides the best chance
for prevention and early detection.
The Center continues to be the highest volume cancer
genetics program in Georgia and the only one providing
services across the lifespan within the same department. In
2016, volume for genetic counseling increased approximately
48 percent. The increase is due to an expanded service area,
with satellite sites added in 2016 at WellStar West Georgia
Medical Center and WellStar Douglas Hospital. The Center
also partners with the breast cancer STAT (Specialty Team and
Treatments) clinic at WellStar North Fulton Hospital to provide
services to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Clinical trials now are available through WellStar-affiliated
medical oncology practices for many patients with metastatic
breast and prostate cancer who carry a BRCA gene mutation.
Patients who may qualify for these trials are offered genetic
testing to ensure access to these options.
The Center also offers:
> Hereditary Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment
> Adult Genetic Clinic
> Preventive Genetics Testing
> Pre-conception and Prenatal Genetic Risk Assessment
> Pediatric Genetic Risk Assessment
Tenth Annual Kell Donation to WellStar Foundation Honors Local Coach
Over the past ten years, the Kell High School
football team has donated $34,000 to the WellStar
Foundation on behalf of the school’s namesake
Carlton “Corky” Kell, who lost his battle with lung
cancer two decades ago.
The team recently presented this year’s
contribution in support of WellStar’s early lung
cancer screenings and preventative services to
Carole Kell, his widow and WellStar Foundation
Board chair (third from right), as she stood among
the crowd of football players, cheerleaders,
athletic staff and fans honoring her late husband.
WELLSTAR
WOMEN’S HEALTH
EMPOWERS CHOICE
The myriad of ways to welcome
a child are as unique as families
themselves. Recognizing this,
WellStar Women’s Health works
with moms every day to provide the
choices that are right for them.
“Our primary goal is a safe, highquality
experience for both mom
and baby,” said Samantha Griner,
executive director, WellStar’s Women’s
Health Service Line. “Our second goal
is to help families have the type of
birthing experience they desire.”
As WellStar’s Chief Women’s Health
Officer, Saleem Malik, M.D., explained,
“At WellStar, we want this experience
to be one driven by the patient.
Therefore, we offer the widest array
of birthing options in the region.”
Through dedicated teams at seven
facilities across Georgia, WellStar
offers a full spectrum of obstetric care
options, including midwifery and water
births in settings close to home (see
related story at right).
“The collaboration between
midwives, nurses, physicians and
the entire WellStar team empowers
women to direct their care, while
maintaining the highest safety and
quality standards,” he said.
“We feel privileged to be a part of
this family milestone in the lives of our
patients,” added Griner.
The Kimbell siblings
recently welcomed their
new baby brother, who
was delivered via water
birth at WellStar North
Fulton Hospital. From
left: Annie age 4, Noah
age 6, Jordan age 8 and
baby Judah.
Patient Returns to WellStar North Fulton
for Third Water Birth
Lauren Kimbell and her husband, Daniel, recently welcomed baby Judah to their
family. He is their third child delivered at WellStar North Fulton Hospital, and just
like his siblings, he was born in the water.
“Water birth at North Fulton is great,” said Kimbell, a chiropractor. “You are in a
hospital setting; the midwife is there… it’s the best of both worlds.”
“There’s a team environment, and most importantly, they respect our choices and
listen to what we think is best for us,” she said.
For Linda Farrow, director of Women’s Health Services at WellStar North Fulton,
listening to patients and their families – while keeping mom and baby safe – is
precisely the key for success.
“The biggest thing we believe in is safety and quality care,” said Farrow. “We always
try to honor what the patients want, but our priority is to make sure when mom and
baby leave the hospital they are happy and healthy.”
Water birth, according to Farrow, is an option for no-risk and low-risk mothers, who
have not had any complications during pregnancy. Families considering this option
are required to take a water birth class to learn about the process.
Kimbell explained that, in her case, water birth helps her stay in control of her labor.
While in the birth tub, she is able to focus, regain strength and keep calm.
Water birth is available in all six delivery rooms at WellStar North Fulton. Nurses,
techs, physicians and midwives are trained to assist mothers and ensure quality
care. WellStar also offers water birthing at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center.
WELLSTAR AND CARELINK
IMPROVE ACCESS TO CARE
IN PAULDING COUNTY
With continued input from surgeons
regarding the items they use, the goal
is to standardize supplies for each
surgery across all hospitals.
Expanded Teleneurology and
Telepsychiatry Services Provide
Round-the-Clock Emergency Care
WellStar Health System recently made a major investment
in helping provide accessible and affordable healthcare and
services to eligible Paulding County residents by partnering
with CareLink of Northwest Georgia, Inc., the county’s first
community health and resource center for the underserved
and uninsured.
“By supporting CareLink, WellStar expands its ability to care
for and improve the overall health of Paulding County’s most
vulnerable community members,” said Kim Menefee, senior
vice president of Strategic Community Development.
With the provision of a 3,200-square-foot medical office
building in Dallas, Ga., and $50,000 in matching funds to
foster fundraising efforts, WellStar is helping to remove
barriers to healthcare for those who need it most within our
local communities.
With WellStar’s partnership, CareLink will deliver healthcare
and support services, including:
> Primary care > Care coordination
> Behavioral health > Community wellness
> Community health services > Educational programs
Members of WellStar’s senior leadership and the CareLink Board
of Directors gathered to celebrate their new partnership, which will
help launch Paulding County’s first community health and resource
center for the underserved and uninsured.
“With WellStar’s generosity, we are poised to make a
significant impact in Paulding County,” said Guy Scull,
president of CareLink, a 501(c)3 organization.
By supporting a Paulding County-based safety net clinic
such as CareLink, WellStar can help increase the delivery
of preventive, primary care, while reducing the number
of patients who rely on the WellStar Paulding Hospital
Emergency Department for non-emergent needs.
priority health needs in the communities it serves, visit
By supporting CareLink,
WellStar expands its ability
to care for and improve the
overall health of Paulding
County’s most vulnerable
community members.
– Kim Menefee, senior vice
president of Strategic Community
Development.
Achieved cost savings allows WellStar
to invest in services and facilities to
meet the growing need for healthcare
in the communities we serve.
“Ultimately, all of this is being done
to create a higher standard of care
for our patients,” said Dr. Mayfield,
noting that patient results eventually
will be linked to these reports to
show the impact on patients’ health
in terms of how quickly they recover,
and how quickly they return to their
normal lives after surgery.
The concept behind the surgeon’s
receipt uses LEAN management
principals of problem-solving by
those who are closest to the situation.
Rather than telling surgeons what they
needed to change, they were given
the information and ability to make
changes themselves.
WellStar recognizes our front-line
caregivers are vital resources of
knowledge and information as
to how the System can continue
improving and aligning processes
in support of our strategic goals.
The team will expand the program
to every surgical procedure in the
WellStar System by Spring of 2018.
“We have surgeons asking us for
their receipts,” said Charlson. “So,
we know there is excitement building
around this program.”
“A project such as this illustrates
the ongoing focus of our physicians
on improving the value and quality
of care we deliver to our patients,”
he said.
WellStar’s expanded telemedicine capabilities allow patients at our acute care hospitals to
get access to care faster with new technology. Karim Godamunne, M.D., vice president and
chief medical officer, (left) launched the teleneurology program at North Fulton hospital
with Emergency Department team members, including Amber Pearson, RN (right).
WellStar Health System has expanded
its telemedicine capabilities, adding
teleneurology and telepsychiatry
through Specialists On Call, Inc. (SOC),
the largest provider of telemedicine
services and technology to acute care
hospitals.
Teleneurology and telepsychiatry are
types of telemedicine that reduce
delay of care by providing patient
consultations with clinicians from a
remote location using the telephone
or the internet.
“In an emergency, every second counts,”
said Freda Lyon, vice president of
emergency services for WellStar Health
System. “With telemedicine, we are able
to provide comprehensive neurological
services for patients around the clock
when they need it most.”
“Through the skill of our providers
and the latest technology, our
patients can receive world-class
healthcare close to home,” she said.
WellStar Atlanta Medical Center
and Atlanta Medical Center
South, and Douglas, North Fulton,
Paulding and Spalding hospitals
will utilize teleneurology to deliver
highly-specialized care to patients
experiencing a stroke. Using live
two-way cameras and high-resolution
images, a patient can connect with a
neurologist faster than traditionally
possible. Telepsychiatry services also
will be used for behavioral health
patients at WellStar Cobb, Douglas,
Kennestone and Paulding hospitals.
11th Annual Great Place to Work Top Performing Leader Celebration
WellStar proudly
honored 418
leaders from
across the
System at the
11th annual
Great Place to Work (GPTW) Top
Performing Leader Celebration. The
event was held at The Commerce Club
in Atlanta and recognized leaders who
achieved a work group score of 90 or
greater for Statement 54 on the 2017
Trust Index Survey: “Taking everything
into account, I would say this is a great
place to work.”
This score closely aligns with the GPTW
100 Best Companies benchmark and
to what the GPTW Institute considers
an “excellent” rating. This year’s event
had 73 more leaders than 2016. The
growth in the number of honorees is a
true testament to the focus leaders have
placed on building a culture of high trust
and engagement amongst their teams –
a foundation of our success.
WELLSTAR HOSPITALS HONORED
FOR SAFETY AND QUALITY EFFORTS
WellStar Douglas and Paulding hospitals are in the top of the class, ranked among the
safest hospitals in Georgia by Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades.
The patient safety group recently released its new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades and
Paulding and Douglas hospitals were among 18 percent of hospitals in the state to earn
an “A” this fall.
WellStar Sylvan Grove Hospital also was named as a 2017 Top Rural Hospital. This
distinction is awarded to fewer than six percent of all hospitals completing a Leapfrog
Hospital Survey and represents the best in safe, high-quality care.
WellStar Paulding Hospital also recently was recognized by Vizient MidSouth, a not-forprofit
healthcare membership alliance, as a Top Performer in its Emergency Department
(ED) Throughput Collaborative. Over the past year, WellStar Paulding’s ED team, along
with other Collaborative members, have worked to more effectively manage patient
safety, quality and overall throughput within their emergency departments. Paulding was
awarded second place.
WellStar Health System President & CEO
Candice L. Saunders congratulates leaders
during the 11th annual Great Place to Work
(GPTW) Top Performing Leader Celebration
for their part in building a culture of high
trust and engagement among their teams.
WellStar Spalding Hospital Research
Collaboration Exemplifies System’s Vision
A case involving a WellStar Spalding
Hospital patient who exhibited extremely
rare symptoms led to a collaborative
research study with the University of
Texas (UT), Medical Branch, Galveston,
on a potentially fatal disease.
“The patient’s case was so unusual and
we wanted answers as to what could
we have known earlier,” said E. Philip
Osehobo, M.D., CMD, Ph.D., FACP, vice
president, Medical Affairs and chief
medical officer at WellStar Spalding
and Sylvan Grove hospitals.
To further their knowledge and improve
future outcomes, Dr. Osehobo and his
team reached out to UT’s renowned
Pathology Department for assistance.
“They jumped on the chance to work
with us,” he said
“While Spalding is a small, rural hospital,
we try to do everything we can to
improve upon care and deliver the best
outcomes possible for our patients,” he
continued. “Participating in this study is
just one example of that philosophy.”
The project was recognized by the
College of American Pathologists,
which invited Dr. Osehobo, and study
co-author Adam L. Booth, M.D., UT
pathology resident, to present their
case report, “Hepatic Hemophagocytic
Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) Presenting
with a Cholestatic Injury Pattern: A
Rare Presentation of a Potentially Fatal
Disease,” at the organization’s recent
annual convention in Washington, D.C.
The study’s outcome showed HLH may
be detected early on at presentation by
expanding initial laboratory testing for
sepsis; the presence of harmful bacteria
and their toxins in human tissue.
report at the 2017 College of American Pathologists Convention in Washington, D.C.
New Program
Supports Parents
of Children with
Special Needs
This fall, WellStar expanded its
Work-Life offering to include the
Bright Horizons Special Needs
Program, Torchlight. It is estimated
that one in five children in the
U.S. has autism, attention-deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
or some other special need. This
program gives team members
access to the first-of-its-kind
education navigation platform
that helps parents and caregivers
of children with special or
exceptional needs.
Torchlight allows caregivers or
parents to track school milestones,
establish a support network of
other caregivers, and join webinars
that cover topics ranging from
Keeping Your Child Safe from Cyber
Bullying to learning about Individual
WELLSTAR MEDICAL GROUP CELEBRATES MEDICAL
ASSISTANTS’ CERTIFICATION
One hundred fifty-six of WellStar Medical Group’s (WMG)
medical assistants (MA) recently celebrated completion of a
year-long certification program, making them fully credentialed
in the state of Georgia. This also completes the certification of
our 400 medical assistants. While not required by law, WellStar
now requires certification as part of the hiring process.
“As we look at the future of healthcare and its movement
toward value-based, outcomes-driven care, often with a
more complex patient base that we are trying to manage in
the ambulatory setting – we really have to assess our care
team model and the clinical skill set needed to care for our
patients and communities,” said Ivy Spencer, RN, assistant vice
president and chief nursing officer, WMG .
“Given the vital role of the MA in the outpatient setting, we
decided to offer this program to enhance clinical quality and
patient safety, as well as to support the development of these
team members.”
Foundation Clay Shoot Supports
Critical Initiatives
Local businesses competed in the WellStar Foundation’s
annual Clay Shoot at Foxhall Resort & Sporting Club
in October. Each year, the Clay Shoot supports crucial
healthcare initiatives across WellStar Health System. This
year’s event raised more than $100,000 benefiting worldclass
emergency and trauma services in the communities
WellStar serves.
(L-R): Amy Trombetta from WellStar Health System, Doug Robinson
and Kelly Roberts of Walter P. Moore & Associates, and Charles
Cheek, HDR, Inc., were among the participants of the 2017
WellStar Foundation’s annual Clay Shoot.
Newly certified WellStar medical assistants celebrated their
graduation at a recent celebration at the Commerce Club. Pictured
are a few of the 156 graduates who were honored.
Certification provides the foundation and training necessary
for the MA to partner with providers and the team to improve
the quality of care we provide to our patients. According to
Spencer, WMG also is developing a career advancement
“Often, the medical assistant is the first and last person
the patient sees during a clinical encounter in our offices,”
said Spencer. “They are critical in supporting the overall
patient experience.”
WELLSTAR HOSPICE CELEBRATES GARDEN OF HOPE
The WellStar Community
Hospice Advisory Committee
recently hosted a Garden of
Hope celebration in honor of the
new hospice garden opening at
Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain.
The Garden of Hope is an extension
of the compassionate care provided
to patients and families, offering
a place of serenity and reflection.
The wooded, respite area provides
a place for guests and small family
groups to find peace and comfort
away from the patient care area.
During the celebration, Sam
Bishop, former Hospice Advisory
Committee chair, provided
background on the rich history of
WellStar Community Hospice, which
started more than 35 years ago
as one of the first hospital-based
hospice program in Georgia.
“For many years, the Hospice Advisory
Committee has partnered with the
WellStar Foundation to enhance patient
and family care,” said Bishop.
Steve Walters, M.D., Hospice Advisory
Committee chair, added “The Garden
of Hope will provide comfort to our
patients and their loved ones during
such a sensitive time in their lives.”
WellStar Community Hospice is grateful
to the many individuals who generously
donated to the WellStar Foundation in
support of the Garden of Hope.
Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain’s Garden of Hope is designed to provide a respite area for
guests and family members.
Caregiver Adds an Artist’s Touch to Hospital
As an MRI coordinator, Mike Williams
helps detect what ails patients. As an
artist, he helps soothe them.
His abstract paintings bring life to the
walls of the MRI waiting area at WellStar
Atlanta Medical Center South. Cast
in vibrant vertical lines of turquoise,
orange, indigo and yellow, “Jungleland”
is bold and vibrant. And with calming
blues and yellows, two untitled paintings
give patients beautiful artwork to gaze
at while they are waiting for an MRI, an
event that can produce anxiety.
“I feel like art enhances a hospital,”
Williams said. “I think it improves patients’
sense of well-being. It makes a difference
in how patients feel – and not only
patients, but team members.”
Painting primarily in acrylic, he has
created at least 100 paintings through
the years, most of which he has given
away. After the MRI waiting area at
AMC South was renovated a few years
ago, he thought it would be the perfect
place to hang some of his art.
He has received positive reactions from
both colleagues and patients.
“One patient told me, ‘This is so relaxing
and soothing. I could just look at the
colors for hours’,” said Williams.
“That made me feel good because
it was the exact thing I wanted to
accomplish.”
Mike Williams, an artist and MRI coordinator
at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center South,
has donated two of his abstract paintings to
the hospital’s MRI Unit’s waiting area. He
is pictured with one of his paintings, titled
“Jungleland.”
