2018 ANNUAL REPORT
BASED ON CY 2017 CANCER
NETWORK ACTIVITIES

VISION
TO DELIVER WORLD-CLASS CANCER CARE
MISSION
TO ELIMINATE THE BURDEN OF CANCER
ON OUR COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING
COMPREHENSIVE PREVENTION AND
EARLY DETECTION, TREATMENT AND
SURVIVORSHIP PROGRAMS, DELIVERED IN
A PATIENT-CENTERED ENVIRONMENT BY
IMPASSIONED CAREGIVERS

WellStar: Connecting Patients
to a Network of Care
In April 2016, WellStar Health System expanded
its footprint to 11 hospitals. With this change,
cancer services also expanded, and the quality
of our patient-centered cancer care improved
throughout our multidisciplinary programs.
The essence of world-class care is having
dedicated caregivers who remain updated on the
literature, use state-of-the-art technology, and
communicate with the patient and each other.
Multidisciplinary care, however, is taken to an
even higher level through WellStar‘s STAT Clinic
concept. At one of these unique clinics, whether
for lung, breast, brain or prostate cancer, the
patient comes to the clinic and is seen by all
their physicians at one time. There is maximum
discussion and the patient leaves knowing
that they have learned their options and have
received their unique treatment plan.
Through our STAT Clinics, we have been able to
deliver a higher level of cancer care and patient
satisfaction, which leads to quicker times to
treatment, adherence to protocols and improved
survival. For example, prostate cancer is a
common cancer that men fear because treatment
can be associated with erectile dysfunction and
urinary incontinence. A patient with an elevated
PSA wants to know that if a cancer diagnosis is
made, he will receive treatment that is just right
for his specific situation. Our surveillance rate of
40% and our STAT Clinic for prostate cancer give
our patients confidence and reassurance that
they have made the right decisions regarding
their cancer treatment.
The growth of our genetic counseling program
and expansion throughout our System has been
an area of excellence led by Director Kimberly
King-Spohn. She and her team are involved in
providing consultation services throughout our
service areas, and also in our multidisciplinary
tumor boards and STAT Clinics. In 2017, the
genetic counselors performed 3,818 patient
consultations.
Our affiliation with Mayo Clinic continues to
strengthen and grow through our popular second
opinion consultation program. We simply upload
radiology imaging digitally and send pathology
slides for a second opinion. Within 48 hours, the
patient and physician receive a formal second
opinion consultation from the experts at Mayo
Clinic, which can be helpful in deciding patient
treatment. Patients receive a high-quality second
opinion without travel and with no additional
opinion consultations with Mayo Clinic during
2017, and we expect that to double next year.
WellStar Cancer Network had a good year in 2017
and I would personally like to thank all of the cancer
administration team and cancer providers for their
dedicated service and patient-first attitude.
2017 CANCER PROGRAM ANNUAL REPORT | 3

Breast Cancer Program
According to data collected
from the CDC in 2015, breast
cancer is the most often
diagnosed cancer in the state
of Georgia, with 1 in 8 women
affected by the disease.
WellStar Cancer Network provides
a comprehensive program for early
detection and treatment of breast
cancer to women in the Metro
Atlanta area and beyond.
The Breast Cancer Program
encompasses a multidisciplinary
team, including dedicated breast
surgeons; medical and radiation
oncologists; state-of-the-art imaging
and treatment facilities; and a
robust support services program,
which includes nurse navigation,
nutritional counseling, social work
and psychological services.
In 2017, the Breast Cancer Program
made several advances in care and
services provided to patients.
In an attempt to increase breast
cancer screening and early diagnosis
of breast cancer in the community,
WellStar facilities provided 1,035
4 | WELLSTAR HEALTH SYSTEM
breast imaging exams in 2017 to
uninsured and underinsured women
at no charge to the patient. These
services were made possible by
contributions from It’s the Journey,
Inc., Susan G. Komen Greater
Atlanta, East/West Church in Austell
and the WellStar Foundation’s Team
Member Giving program.
Recognizing the importance
of early detection and timely
intervention for lymphedema,
a common side effect of breast
cancer treatment, the WellStar
Foundation donated funds to offset
patient costs for screening with the
L-Dex system. L-Dex system is a
measurement tool that can identify
lymphedema up to 10 months prior
to evidence of limb swelling.
Our peer support program, Survivor’s
Offering Support, continued its
success in 2017 with seven dedicated
patient-volunteers working with
newly diagnosed breast cancer
patients. These volunteers are
breast cancer survivors, who are
at least one year out of their own
cancer treatment. They provide
resources, emotional support, and
guidance for patients throughout
their breast cancer journey.
As part of the program’s dedication to
increasing breast cancer awareness and to
providing the most up-to-date treatment and
diagnostic advances, Laura Pearson, M.D.,
and Glenn Morehead, M.D., were invited to
present a lecture at the WellStar Kennestone
Auditorium in September of 2017, entitled,
“Recent Advances in Breast Cancer Care.”
This lecture, open to providers in the WellStar
community and beyond, touched on the
latest surgical and medical options for breast
cancer treatment.
With an ever-increasing complexity of
cancer care, many patients find the delay
between diagnosis and the start of their
treatment to be a frustrating and scary time.
The Breast Cancer STAT Clinic at WellStar
North Fulton Hospital continues to provide
the opportunity for patients to see a full
multidisciplinary team of specialists in a
single visit. This allows for rapid development
of a treatment plan, and reduces delays from
diagnosis to definitive treatment. The Breast
Cancer STAT Clinic features a team comprised
of a fellowship-trained breast surgeon,
board certified plastic surgeons, medical
oncologists, radiation oncologists, and a
breast cancer nurse navigator. In addition,
each patient seen in the clinic is evaluated by
a genetic counselor to determine the patient’s
risk for hereditary cancers.
Atlanta Braves fans were encouraged to wear pink when
WellStar hosted a “Pink Out” of SunTrust Park to raise
awareness for breast cancer. WellStar-branded tomahawks
were given to the first 20,000 fans. More than 290 breast
cancer survivors and 544 additional family members and
friends participated in activities, including a photo booth
and patient education tents.
Gastrointestinal Cancer Program
With a multidisciplinary approach,
the Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer
Program continues to seek out
new methods for improving
patient outcomes and treatment
for cancers of the GI system.
WellStar patients receive state-of-the-art
robotic surgeries, along with targeted
chemotherapies, immunotherapies,
biologic therapies, radiation – including
Cyberknife and Tomotherapy – and
clinical trials. With the largest genetic
department in the state, we use
genetic testing to determine the best
chemotherapy treatment option for a
patient’s specific cancer.
In 2017, 175 colorectal patients
underwent surgical resection at
WellStar, during which IHC screening
for Lynch syndrome, the most common
hereditary colon cancer syndrome,
was performed. Ten of these patients
had abnormal testing results and
four elected to have genetic testing.
Ultimately, one of these patients was
diagnosed with Lynch syndrome,
showing the impact of testing and
identifying genetic mutations in our
patient population.
The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery
Program (ERAS) also began in 2017.
The individualized pre-operative class
for GI patients helps alleviate fears
and stress about their upcoming
surgery and treatment. It also helps
to decrease length of stay and
readmissions within the first thirty days
following surgery by making sure the
patient knows what is expected of
them – and what they can expect from
their care team – before, during and
after surgery.
WellStar provides a dedicated GI
oncology nurse navigator to assist
patients in their treatment plan and
survivorship. Atlanta Magazine featured
the program in an article about how the
patient benefits from the guidance of a
navigator throughout the cancer journey.
2017 CANCER PROGRAM ANNUAL REPORT | 7

Genitourinary Cancer Program
With state-of-the-art diagnostic
services and tailored options for
treatment, our Genitourinary
Cancer Program serves patients
with kidney, bladder, prostate,
testicular and penile cancers.
challenges physicians face when
treating prostate cancer is actual
detection of the exact, specific
location of the malignant tissue.
Fusion MRIs are a recent technique
used to improve detection and
target cancerous tissue. Doctors
use software that fuses the detailed
MRI scans with live, real-time
ultrasound images of the prostate.
This “fusion” of images produces a
3-D ultrasound/MRI view that allows
physicians to guide the biopsy
needles precisely to find the “right”
tissue. This is similar to using a GPS
to find one’s exact destination.
Our advanced prostate cancer
patients have been an important
focus of the program, with several
patients on immunotherapy
for metastatic cancer that has
spread to other parts of the body.
Immunotherapy uses the body’s
immune system to help attack
the cancer cells. Our goal is to
ensure that metastatic patients
are benefiting from treatments that
will give them the best possible
quality of life.
For patients with low-risk cancers,
WellStar employs an “active
surveillance” treatment method.
This allows us to track, using PSA
testing and repeat biopsies when
necessary, and monitor patients on
a regular basis to ensure that their
cancer cells are not growing.
While we deploy the traditional
testing methods such as PSAs, and
the Gleason score – a prognostic
Our multidisciplinary clinic for prostate
60%
of low-risk prostate
cancer patients are on
active surveillance
grading system, which determines the probable behavior
of prostate cancer over time – we continue to search for the
latest techniques and technology to improve diagnosis and
prognosis.
To that end, we added the Decipher test to our arsenal in fighting
prostate cancer. This test predicts the probability of metastasis
after surgery and provides an independent assessment of tumor
aggressiveness. This additional test provides a distinct set
of information from that provided by other tests, such as the
Gleason or PSA.
We continue to use genomics – testing of tumor cells to help
identify specific genes that may be causing a tumor to grow. This
information can help predict the disease progression in patients
with low-risk, low-grade cancer. This test has allowed us to
monitor appropriate patients without any invasive treatments.
Our Prostate Support Group provides emotional support for
patients with monthly meetings. In 2017, we hosted our sixth
annual Prostate Survivors’ Celebration in conjunction with
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
GRATEFUL PATIENT PAINTS
PORTRAIT OF RADIATION
ONCOLOGIST
WellStar West Georgia Medical
Center patient Emil Barlow showed
his appreciation to his radiation
oncologist, Robert Taylor, M.D., by
painting a portrait of the physician,
whom Barlow said gave him hope,
encouragement and a listening ear
during treatment for prostate cancer.
“I’m grateful my path crossed with
Dr. Taylor’s,” Emil Barlow said. “He
and his team did so much to help
me get through this.”
Diagnosed after PSA readings as
high as 45 and 58, Barlow began
seeing Dr. Taylor at WellStar West
Georgia for external beam radiation
therapy followed by a seed implant,
a type of radiation treatment that
works from inside the body to kill
prostate cancer cells.
“Dr. Taylor said it might be a year
after the seed implant that my PSA
levels would be back to normal,”
said Barlow, who lives in Thomaston.
“Instead, my levels were zero-pointzero
30 days after the implant.”
Emil Barlow, pictured here with Robert
Taylor, M.D., is now retired and enjoys
painting about seven to eight portraits
a year.
Barlow said he enjoyed getting to
know Dr. Taylor and his fellow team
members in Radiation Oncology.
“All of [the team members] were so
sincere in their desire to help me get
better,” he said. “Dr. Taylor said to
me, ‘I’ll treat you as if you were my
father.’ That’s an earth-shattering
thing for a patient to hear; it really
touched me.”
Gynecology Cancer Program
The Gynecology Cancer Program
continued to grow in 2017 with the
ability to see patients at WellStar Cobb,
Kennestone and North Fulton hospitals,
as well as WellStar Medical Group
Internal Medicine at Princeton Lakes.
In addition, we will expand to WellStar
Gynecology Subcommittee Chair
Jeffrey Hines, M.D.
Jeffrey Hines, M.D., and Amy Carroll, M.D.,
provide a wide range of complex surgeries,
including robotic and minimally invasive
procedures, as well as evidence-based therapies
on virtually all types of gynecological cancers,
including cervical, endometrial, ovarian, vaginal,
vulvar and gestational trophoblastic disease.
Additionally, the Gynecology team works closely
with supportive services, including genetic
counseling, nutritional counseling, psychosocial
services and palliative medicine to ensure
patients receive full comprehensive care and
treatment. In 2017, in order to improve access
and timeliness for our patients, we made a
promise to them that new gynecological cancer
patients would have their first consult with a
gynecological oncologist within 48-72 hours of
receiving a referral.
Our chemotherapy patients are treated at three
state-of-the-art chemotherapy centers located in
Austell, Marietta and Roswell.
Looking ahead, we have plans to expand our
offering of clinical trials with the addition of
gynecologic protocols through the National
Cancer Institute (NCI). We are also working to
enhance our ancillary and supportive services
through the expansion of psychosocial and other
counseling services.
WellStar Cobb and
WellStar Douglas
STAT Clinics.
WellStar’s Thoracic Cancer Program
is dedicated to helping patients who
have cancer in any of the organs of
the chest cavity, including the lungs
and esophagus.
Patients whose chest imaging studies show
abnormal results are eligible to be referred to the
multidisciplinary Thoracic STAT (Specialty Teams
and Treatments) Clinic. Patients can be referred
to the STAT Clinic by physicians (primary care or
pulmonology) or by self-referral.
Our multidisciplinary approach includes
pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation
oncologists, thoracic surgeons, and nurse
navigators as part of the visit. Having the entire
care team in one central location takes the stress
out of going from one appointment to the next.
It significantly reduces the lead time between
diagnosis and treatment, but more importantly,
the collaborative effort breaks down the silos
often experienced in healthcare settings and
enhances critical decision-making processes in
treatment planning.
WellStar offers three clinics each week to
accommodate these patients. We have Monday
and Wednesday clinics at WellStar Kennestone
Hospital Cancer Center; and Thursdays,
Nurse Navigator
Wendy Bailey, BSN,
RN, OCN
alternating weekly, at WellStar Cobb Hospital
Cancer Center and WellStar Douglas Hospital
Physicians Building.
After patients are scheduled for a diagnostic
procedure, they return to the STAT Clinic to
receive their results. During that visit, the case will
be reviewed by the care team to identify diagnosis
and develop a treatment plan. The recommended
treatment plan and other options are extensively
discussed with patients, and
procedural and follow-up
appointments are made prior
to the patient leaving the STAT
Clinic. Patient feedback has been
tremendously positive regarding
the STAT Clinic, as their travel
time and time off from work has
been significantly reduced.
Patients who need chemotherapy
have access to the latest clinical
trials through the oncologists who
staff the STAT Clinic, and patients
can also opt for second opinion
with the Mayo Clinic through
our collaborative WellStar-
Mayo partnership. Our thoracic
surgeons and pulmonologists
offer the most advanced
techniques, including minimally
invasive procedures.
LUNG SCREENING
Many patients who are referred
to the STAT Clinic for their care
get their referrals through another
successful program at WellStar. The
Lung Cancer Screening Program
refers many patients with abnormal
screening CTs to the Clinic to
determine whether patients need
more frequent follow up in screening
or need to be followed in STAT clinic
to get tissue testing. The earlier we
can catch lung cancer, the better the
outcome for the patient.
Leading with Genetics
Between five and 10 percent of cancers
are diagnosed in people with an inherited
predisposition to increased risk.
Through genetic risk assessment, the WellStar
Center for Genetics and Individualized
Medicine, in its tenth year of service in 2017,
aims to stop cancer before it appears.
Housed in WellStar Cancer Center at WellStar
Kennestone Hospital, the Center includes
custom-designed consultation rooms and an
in-house lab draw station. After determining
whether genetic testing is appropriate, WellStar
genetic counselors test for specific hereditary
conditions known to increase the risk of various
cancers and other genetic disorders. Counselors
then recommend a specific plan based on the
results, which could include increased screenings,
lifestyle modifications or other procedures. Each
patient’s individualized plan provides the best
chance for prevention and early detection.
5%-10%
of cancers are diagnosed
in people with an inherited
predisposition to increased risk
Genetic Counselors: (left to right) Amy Bradley,
MMSc, CGC; and Caitlin Wright, MS, CGC
For patients already diagnosed with cancer,
the Genetics team uses its testing, including
family history, personalized risk assessment and
appropriate screening tests, to determine the risk
for future cancers. Testing can help determine
why a person has a certain cancer and how to
best treat it, based on the patient’s genetics.
Knowing a patient’s genetic predisposition to
cancer can lead to proactive measures in order
to prevent a future problem.
The Center continues to be the highest volume
cancer genetics program in Georgia and the only
one providing services across the lifespan within
the same department. WellStar offers genetic
counseling services at locations across our service
area, including WellStar Atlanta Medical Center
Patient Patty Watkins encourages others to
consider genetic testing.
“The diagnosis definitely
scared me, but I knew I had
a strong support system
children and the rest of my
family. I knew I could get
past this horrible disease.”
PATIENT TOUTS GENETIC TESTING
In 2014, Patty Watkins was diagnosed with
metastatic lung cancer. Two years later, the cancer
metastasized to her brain, where 49 tumors were
found. “The diagnosis definitely scared me, but
I knew I had a strong support system from my
husband, two children and the rest of my family.
I knew I could get past this horrible disease.”
Months after being diagnosed with lung cancer,
Patty was able to celebrate the momentous
occasion of completing chemotherapy at the
WellStar Kennestone Hospital Outpatient
Infusion Center. In 2017, she was placed on a
targeted therapy drug after her tumor biopsy
was positive. Today she shows no evidence of
the disease.
“Now that there is no evidence of lung cancer,
I’ve decided to be an advocate for lung cancer
patients and survivors,” Patty says. “I’m vigilant
in telling all newly diagnosed patients to be
tested for a genetic mutation. It saved my life
and it can save countless others.”
Psychiatrist Kajal
Patel, M.D., WellStar
Medical Group
Psychological (Psychosocial) Services
Following a cancer diagnosis, patients
can experience a wide range of emotional
and physical challenges. WellStar Cancer
Network recognizes the importance of treating
the whole patient by offering a variety of
evidence-based psychosocial and behavioral
health services to meet patient needs.
For patients with more complex needs or
those who prefer one-on-one care, the Cancer
Network partners with oncology behavioral
health specialists within WellStar Medical
Group to provide psychiatric and psychological
intervention. Support groups provide an
invaluable venue for patients to express their
emotions and gain support from others, while
psychoeducational workshops provide practical
information and tools to help patients manage
emotions and symptoms effectively.
Social Services and Support
One of the more challenging aspects of
battling cancer is the necessary multifaceted life
adjustments, which can include concerns around
financial resources and psychosocial distresses.
WellStar oncology social workers assist patients
and their families with adjustment to their cancer
diagnosis. An integral part of the healthcare
team, social workers can quickly identify patients’
financial and psychosocial needs, tailor a
specific plan, and link patients with appropriate
resources based on each patient’s needs.
In 2017, with the integration of five new hospitals
into the WellStar Health System, the social
services team standardized the Comprehensive
Biopsychosocial Distress Screening throughout
the WellStar Cancer Network. The goal of
the screening is to measure patients’ distress
throughout their treatment regimen, which can
last from a few weeks to several months, and to
rapidly address those suffering from high distress.
Clinical Psychologist
Jennifer Kilkus, Ph.D.
Support and Education
WellStar offers a full array of educational classes
and seminars for patients to help heal the mind,
body and spirit. From prevention, exercise and
healthy cooking classes to survivorship series
discussions and special events, we strive to
financial barrier to care for hundreds of patients
each year. To be eligible to participate in this
program, patients must be at least 40 years old,
uninsured or underinsured, and live below the
250% federal poverty threshold.
WellStar removes the
financial barrier to care for
Investments in Cancer
With a newly integrated Cancer
Network, WellStar is focused on
new ways to bring care to patients.
T-VEC Treatments
WellStar became the first community hospital
network in Georgia to begin offering T-VEC, a
treatment for melanoma that uses a live virus to
kill cancer cells. T-VEC is injected directly into the
lesion by a surgical oncologist every two weeks
until the lesion(s) is gone. It may also stimulate
the body’s own immune system to fight the
cancer. T-VEC is approved for use in patients with
advanced melanoma (Stage IIIB, IIIC or IV) that
cannot be completely removed with surgery.
Digital PET
In 2017, WellStar Kennestone Hospital became
the second healthcare facility in the United States
to invest in digital positron emission tomography
(PET), which allows radiologists to compare high
resolution, color images through an advanced
Picture Archiving and Communication (PAC).
Digital PET enables the team of professionals
reviewing cases to have increased decisionmaking
capability. An arrow on the images shows
exactly where the disease is identified on the
scan, making diagnosis and treatment of disease
a precise target. This technique offers better
sensitivity and specificity in locating the area of
concern, which translates to increased reliability
of images used for diagnosis and treatment of
cancer at WellStar.
Looking Ahead
Cutting Edge Technology for
Treating Brain and Lung Tumors
WellStar West Georgia Medical Center
(WGMC) continued adding to its cutting-edge
capabilities in Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
and Stereotactic Ablative Radiation Therapy
(SABR) with an Optical Surface Monitoring
System (OSMS). WellStar West Georgia was
one of the first cancer centers in Georgia to
add this capability, which Radiation Oncologist
Robert Taylor, M.D., uses to track patients during
precision treatments for brain tumors.
OSMS is a 3D tracking solution consisting
of three sets of laser scanning banks coupled
with high-resolution sensors around the patient.
It monitors the patient’s position by tracking
3,000 points on the patient’s body surface
30 times a second. If the patient moves even a
millimeter, the system automatically shuts down
the radiation beam, allowing Dr. Taylor to treat
with incredible precision.
Radiation Oncologist
Robert Taylor M.D.,
West Georgia
This technology further enhances the hospital’s
SRS program, especially for precise targeting
of high doses of radiation to brain tumors.
Radiosurgery is painless and requires no
cutting, anesthesia or recovery time. It takes
less than an hour, and patients can drive
themselves home afterwards.
WellStar West Georgia also uses Rapid Arc
capability with OSMS. This enhances even
further the treatment of all tumors with
precision radiotherapy and decreased radiation
to normal tissues. Rapid Arc targets radiation
beams from 360 degrees around the patient
that collectively focus precisely on destroying
the tumor.
Rapid Arc is especially useful with lung tumors
when used with SABR treatment where high
doses are given in early lung cancer. It offers
an excellent chance at a cure without surgery.
SABR uses many radiation beams that precisely
destroy the tumor while leaving normal tissue
with minimal radiation. This treatment kills the
lung tumor in greater than 90 percent of cases.
WellStar West Georgia also has Respiratory
Gating capabilities, allowing Dr. Taylor to track
the tumor with 1-millimeter accuracy during the
breath cycle. The radiation is turned on only
when the tumor is in the correct position and
automatically turns off when the tumor moves
due to breathing motion.
