The morning news is all too often a bitter reminder of yesterday’s pain and a depressing promise of
more to come. Much like Isaiah, good news is a rare find. It is easy to pile on the burden of social and
individual distress, disgust, and disillusion. Even the mention of hope can, at times, seem laughable or
even, dare I say, indulgent. There is so much suffering and pain that needs attention right now – how
do we have time to speak about hope? But maybe hope isn’t just about future expectations and maybe
Advent isn’t about some far-off destination. Could our journey be less about traversing treacherous obstacles
with unyielding perseverance and more about being present with each other even in the pain?
Might our hope be more about God with us and less about us finding God?
Quinn Garcia
We thought of life by analogy with a journey, with a pilgrimage, which had a serious purpose at that
end, and the thing was to get to that end. Success, or whatever it is…But we missed the point the
whole way along. It was a musical thing, and you were supposed to sing or to dance while the music
was being played.
