As I write this, it is not even Thanksgiving yet, and already the Christmas decorations are out to buy in the stores, the lighting of the tree downtown is coming up this weekend, and the commercials on TV are telling us that Santa’s on his way. It’s the season to rush, to spend money and get that perfect gift, to put out the lights until our home looks like the Griswolds’ family Christmas. Just thinking about it makes me want to hide under the covers. In all the hustle and hassle, we forget the true meaning of the season sometimes. We sin. We put the “to do” list before the real reason for the season—that God sent his only Son to be with us. He came down to us. Isaiah 64:3 says “For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.” Who would have ever expected that God would come down to earth as a little baby and grow into a man? That this little child would transform the world and save us from our sins? Maybe instead of getting caught up in all the rush of the season, we should get caught up in the wonder and the glory of this tiny baby sent to save the world. Maybe we should take time to just marvel at the glorious gift we all received at Christmas. Maybe, like Mary, we should treasure up all these things and ponder them in our hearts. (from Luke 2:19) Lord, help us to stop the rushing and spend some time remembering the real reason for Christmas. Help us to share that joy and wonder with the world. Amen. Angella Branch
