Is Kitchen Redesign Expensive?
Whenever a person moves in to a new home they may want to remodel their
kitchen. One of the questions asked on most home improvement forums is if the
kitchen redesign will be expensive. The answer to this is both yes and no. The
kitchen remodel will cost as much as you want it to and as little as your will to
compromise on.
Before getting your kitchen redesigned make sure you know what you can cut
costs on. Appliances are surprisingly very expensive to replace and let’s not get
started on the cabinets. The average kitchen remodel can be between $5000
$75,000. The determining factor is you. Think to yourself is that inbuilt wine
cooler really worth it? Can you survive another day with that leaky sink? Set up
priority list and choose what must go and what can stay. Use the following guide
to set apart the man areas where remodeling happens.
1. Kitchen Cabinets.
There are some of the most expensive items when it comes to remodeling.
Kitchen cabinets amount to 30% of the entire remodeling budget. You can get
the kitchen cabinet designs that are strong and sturdy which will last for long.
This is when you want to go all out. If you are on a budget then you can buy
stock cabinets. They are not as spectacular but they will get the job done.
2. Tile work.
Tiles work really depends on the type you use. You can get some for a dollar/foot
or some go into the hundreds for the same size. You can lay your own tiles if you
have experience. If you have never worked with tiles or ceramics before you will
need to hire labour which will cost a bit more.
Although stone countertop are more or less expensive than your ordinary
laminate ones, they are also more durable. If you plan on being in the home for
long then you can splurge on this.
3. Plumbing.
If you are changing your kitchen layout then some plumbing may need to be
moved around. This is not your regular fix under the sink. You will have to get
professional help in this case. Plumbers in the US for example really go through
a long process to become licensed. With over four stages to cover to earn the
Master Plumbers license. This takes 68 years. Get yourself a well trained and
certified plumber to avoid future expenses. This is the one place we wouldn’t
advise you to cut corners.
4. Labour.
All the labour you have in your home to remodel will cost 20% of your
remodeling project. That number is worth it if you need to use your kitchen as
soon as possible. You can however reduce the cost by hiring people who have the
skills but only work as side jobs. If you hire a contractor it will be slightly more
expensive due to the overhead costs he has to cater for.
5. RESale value.
If you plan to sell the home in future then go for more basic designs that can be
customized and plenty of long lasting appliances. Look more in the stainless
steel section.
