pasando de producir 11 MW en el año 2013 a 850 MW en 2015;

President of Metro de Santiago
Santiago’s Subway will operate with renewable energies since December
Only a few weeks ago, the former vice president of the United
States, Al Gore (Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts against climate
change), stated that “Chile is inspiring the world with a
significant expansion of solar energy, faster than any other
country in the planet”, increasing its production from 11 MW in
2013 to 850 MW in 2015, and in process of adding other 13.3
GW of capacity.
The fact is that in the last few years, Chile has sought to
stimulate NCRE’s development, with the purpose of increasing
supply assurance, by diversifying generation sources and
reducing its foreign imports, but, most of all, contributing to a
sustainable development by means of a lower environmental
impact.
In this endeavor that our country is taking, Metro de Santiago,
which is the second non-regulated consumer of the
Metropolitan Region, transporting over two million passengers,
took on the challenge of having a green power matrix by 2018.
This is not casual. Sustainability is in the nature of our service.
We are a non-polluting means of transport that mobilizes
citizens on trains with no gas or particle emissions, which has
meant an actual contribution to the city’s decontamination.
As a non-polluting means of transport, committed to the
environment, we have been studying and analyzing over the last
two years the way in which we could establish a long-term
supply at stable prices, and incorporate NCREs. We have had
conversations with different actors of the sector and observed
several experiences, both at a local and international level.
As a result, last year we signed contracts with two renewable
generation companies which will provide us clean and
renewable power to cover part of our daily electric consumption
for the next 15 years.
With this, we are innovating as few other subways in the world
have done, and we are making a concrete contribution to the
country’s power matrix. Our commitment is that by next
December, 76% of the subway’s power will be generated from
NCRE, 42% of which will come from solar energy, 18% from
wind power, and 16% from traditional sources that in the next
future will also be generated from renewable sources.
It is worth noting that one of the plants supplying the subway
will be financed with the pledge of the long-term contract with
Metro de Santiago.
The fact that the power matrix of the subway is composed in a
76% of NCRE, not only makes every travel cleaner but also
contributes directly to the environment by reducing CO2
emissions in the equivalent of a 9,600,000 trees plantation. In
this way, Metro de Santiago takes an active part in the national
goal of NCRE development.
Even though the international experience shows that several
subways around the world have incorporated NCRE in their
productive processes, Metro de Santiago will be a pioneer in
incorporating such an amount of clean energies to its
consumption matrix.
We are thrilled by this achievement, and bound to keep going in
that direction. We are working and making our best to
announce, in 2018, that 100% of our energy sources are clean.

COMPLEMENTARY SERVICES: 1ST TRIAL IN CHILE OF
A PHOTOVOLTAIC PLANT PROVES NCRE FLEXIBILITY
First Solar has performed the first test in Latin America – and second in the world- for
the active participation in complementary services of a photovoltaic power plant. The
trial was conducted by Engie Laborelec Chile, ¡ÉSTA and ES proved LA PRIMERA in real time PLANTA the capability of
the Luz del Norte Plant, of 141 MW of capacity, to provide complementary services
such as Fast Frequency Control (Synthetic Inertial Response) and Fast Tension Control
(STATCOM kind of response).
In addition, a simulation of the plant’s connection to the Automatic Generation Control
system (AGC) of the National Electric System (SEN) was performed. The test, led by
Sebastián Michels, of ENGIE Laborelec, and Gabriel Ortiz, of First Solar, proves that
NCRE technologies have the capability of providing balancing services (necessary for
the stability and reliability of the Electric System), and that their participation in a market
of complementary services is actually possible.
ACERA TAKES PART IN THE DELEGATION
OF WOMEN AND ENERGY IN TEXAS
The Foreign Ministry’s General Directorate of International Economic Relations
(DIRECON), through its Gender Department, organized a delegation on “Women
and Energy”, with the purpose of exchanging experiences and knowledge among
renowned Chilean women with representatives of Houston and Dallas (Texas).
MILESTRONE: THE INTERCONNECTION
SING-SIC COMES TRUE.
The last days of November were historic. The unification of the two Interconnected
Systems, the Central (SIC) – between Taltal and Chiloe- and the Norte Grande (SING)
¡ÉSTA ES LA PRIMERA PLANTA
-between Arica and Antofagasta-, which supply over 97% of Chilean population,
GEOTÉRMICA DE SUDAMÉRICA!
became a reality. This major fact was made official in a small ceremony headed by the
President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, and the Minister of Energy, Andres
Rebolledo, at the premises of the National Electric Coordinator, with the presence of
Carlos Finat, ACERA’s Executive Director, representing the renewable sector.
The interconnection was recognized by the President as “the greatest electric
transmission work in the Chilean history”, and this because the project, that began its
construction in 2015, is meant to contribute to the energy matrix’ diversification by
enabling the incorporation of renewable projects, mainly wind and solar, which up to
now could not transmit all of their power. The new system has an approximate installed
capacity of 24,000 MW and a 1,000 MW demand and will have a positive impact on the
electricity prices, due to a greater generation competition.
ACERA’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MEMBER OF THE PERMANENT
PRESIDENTIAL ADVISORY COMMISSION ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate Change has become an issue of international –and of course nationalrelevance
and therefore Presidenta Michelle Bachelet created recently the Permanent
Presidential Advisory Commission on Climate Change, that will advise the Executive
in all matters related with the identification and formulation of policies, plans,
programs, measures and other activities concerning climate change, as well as the
compliance of Chile’s international commitments, in addition to the elaboration and
proposal of a national public climate policy.
The commission will be formed by over 30 members, including experts of the civil
society, representatives of organizations, and authorities. Carlos Finat, ACERA’s
Executive Director, was one of the chosen, as a result of the importance of Renewable
Energies in the climate change mitigation, and his experience in this field. After his
appointment, Finat stated: “In ACERA we have been working for a long time for a
clean, competitive and sustainable matrix for Chile, but we must be more ambitious
and work for a regulatory framework providing the basis for the mitigation and
adaptation to Climate Change. It is urgent to accelerate the decarbonization process
in Chile. If we don’t act soon, collaborating if the rest of the countries, the effects will
be irreversible”.

BREAKFAST: THE INTERNATIONAL GEOTHERMAL
ASSOCIATION MEETS THE CHILEAN INDUSTRY
Geothermal energy is getting every time more relevance as a power generation source for
Chile, since, besides being indigenous, it is capable of generating clean energy 24 hours a
day and, in addition, contributes to the diversification and generation of jobs and
investments, all of which are key factors for ¡ÉSTA our country’s ES LA PRIMERA development. PLANTA In this context, the
Chilean Association of Renewable Energies,
GEOTÉRMICA
ACERA,
DE
together
SUDAMÉRICA!
with EDC (Energy
Development Corporation), and with the support of the Geothermal Council, took advantage
of the visit of the International Geothermal Association (IGA) to organize a Workshop on this
technology, where some of its outstanding members, such as Alexander Richter, IGA’s
president, lectured on the subject. The activity involved important figures of the industry:
Heads of Divisions of the Ministry of Energy, representatives of the mining world, scholars,
and others.
Gonzalo Torres, president of the Geothermal Council, referred to the importance of this
technology stating that “geothermal power is not only a renewable source of energy but it is
also indigenous and of constant generation (24/7), which increases the electric system’s
security and flexibility. This is why Chile must see it as an opportunity, especially considering
its 3,500 MW of potential. By 2050, more than 30 carbon plants will have fulfilled their useful
lives, and geothermal energy could occupy a key position in delivering stable and clean
energy to the country”.
MINISTER OF ENERGY TOOK PART IN THE CLOSING CEREMONY
OF ACERA’S PRESS COURSE
After eight sessions carried out during the year covering the leading topics of the electric
industry, last November 30 was the closure of the very successful third version of the
Energy and NCRE Training Program for Communicators in Santiago. It began with a
speech of the sociologist and journalist Raul Sohr, who gave an overview of the sector
and the importance of communications in bringing the industry closer to people. Next
came the prize ceremony, headed by the Minister of Energy, Andres Rebolledo, together
with ACERA’s Executive Director, Carlos Finat, the Executive Director of the Chilean Solar
Committee, Rodrigo Mancilla, and representatives of the sponsoring companies,
Collahuasi and Mainstream RP.
The Minister used the occasion to take stock of the positive changes undergone by the
industry and the developments that have taken place during this administration. “I
remember being with you when the course was just beginning and in these eight months
the sector has changed. We have attained the long-awaited electric interconnection,
inaugurate the largest photovoltaic plant in Latin America, the system has geothermal
energy and we have fostered electromobility. All of these developments mean nothing
without a correct broadcasting, and that is how your work becomes fundamental”, said
the minister. Finally, the attendants applauded the initiative of “Gastón y Nova” of the
Ministry, as an excellent way of communicating and getting the energy sector closer to the
community.

and under an EPC contract, at, we finished the construction of the second phase
of San Pedro on the island of Chiloe, with 5.0 MW turbines.
Which elements characterize and/or distinguish your company?
With our wind turbines we can meet the needs of the customers, covering
different kinds of winds and markets, and contributing with the reduction of power
cost.
How important is NCRE participation in the Chilean electric system?
In the current context, it is essential to promote and ensure renewable energy
sources that guarantee long-term resource sustainability. In this sense, Siemens
Gamesa looks forward getting a cleaner, surer and more accessible energy closer
to all over the world.
Why would you recommend being an ACERA member?
ACERA is definitively an opportunity to foster NCRE’s development in Chile from
the renewable sector itself, whose actors share a common agenda and goals.
