• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Crusader Challenge seniors Challenge Underclassman to achieve their Personal Best Each year on the last day of senior classes, the school gathers together to wish the Seniors well at the “Senior Send Off.” In return, the Seniors offer advice to the under classman on the things that they have learned over their four years. The Class of 2017 chose to offer their fellow crusaders 10 challenges. eMBRaCe sChool sPiRit: “Don’t be too cool. It’s okay to act crazy and embarrass yourself, because I’ll tell you something, there are definitely other kids in the crowd that want to do the same thing.” Do the UnCoMFoRtaBle: “Say yes to what life throws at you. A quick execution of a small idea can lead to very big things if we find what we love and make it a big part of our lives.” Give BaCk to otheRs: “The rewards of community service are unexplainable. There are an endless amount of volunteering opportunities, and it is so easy to get involved.” listen to yoUR teaCheRs: “Listen to your teachers outside of the classroom — some of the most important lessons you learn at Fenwick can happen before and after school. By learning from your teachers you can learn more about yourself, and discover both who you are and who you want to be.” take aDvantaGe oF athletiCs: “We’ll all come back eventually and see another Fenwick game, but never again will we sit in that cold, dark locker room waiting to walk out and start another game, we will not get another opportunity to play in a Crusaders jersey. I challenge you to fight for every ground ball, go all out for every rebound, and go the distance for every tackle, and no matter what, never be satisfied.” take aDvantaGe oF the aRts: “I challenge you to “audition”. I encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace something where you can express yourself, whatever that may be. No matter your grade, your background, the arts will expand your horizons and help you grow in ways you can't imagine.” ManaGe yoUR tiMe: “Study because it will pay off in college, but also make time for yourself. Make time for your friends and for the things that you love. Don’t skip proms or semis and don’t decide to not play a sport just because you’re afraid you can’t handle it.” Meet the Rest oF the FenwiCk FaMily: “The Fenwick Family was my life for these past four years, and I’d like to thank you for sharing it with me. So that’s why my challenge to you is to get to know somebody in your grade who you may not know very well because your classmates will always be a family to you.” Be an aDvoCate: “There will always be people who disagree with you, but it should never stop you from speaking. The community is made a better place when questions and debates are happening, whether it is about a school policy or a government policy.” stay Positive: “Even on what feels like the worst days, we are all able to learn from mistakes. At the moment these mistakes may seem bad but in the end there are always ways to make your situation better. Saint Julie Billiart, foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur once said “To be simple is to be like a sunflower which follows all the movements of the sun and ever turns toward it” With that being said I encourage you to always aim to grow and to shine during your years at Fenwick in any way possible, just like a sunflower. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Energize • Engage • Educate o’Rourke library enhancements Visitors to the newly renovated O'Rourke Library & Information Center can immediately feel the energy of the students who congregate there. The library has remained a place to gather and learn yet the space has continually evolved since 1959; keeping pace with change has become a constant in our world. Recent renovations, thanks to the generosity of our Auction 2017 Fund a Dream donors allows enhanced engagement for Fenwick students. Educational experts recognize the importance of furnishings when it comes to delivering to busy and distracted students all that is old and new in the world. Does the transparency and temperature insolating features of the new window treatments matter? How about the new tiled carpeting and the exposure of the old brick? What does the tablet charging station running along a high countertop with its stools contribute to a study group's effort? Where and when does a 65 inch smart television fit into learning new ways of using information? At Fenwick, thanks to the generosity of those who know that curiosity and discovery are at the heart of learning, the technology is as inviting and friendly as any paper volume has ever been. The physical comfort combined with a demonstration of respect for the authors and scholars who capture and present ideas for people who come after them demonstrate the wisdom of the O'Rourke Sisters almost 60 years ago. Libraries are all about what students need, then and now. Students using eBooks, logging into databases, listening to audiobooks and linking to primary sources from around the world appreciate using the physical space of a library to leap into the unknown.
