January<br />

January began the year with new leadership with lofty goals. <strong>2017</strong> officers and<br />

directors were sworn in at the January General Membership Meeting and guest<br />

speaker Attorney James Gilliam spoke on Business &Employment Law. Awards<br />

were given to outstanding members: Pillar Award: Jill Marshall; Membership<br />

Award: John Caprio; Rising Star Award: Stan Godshall; Rookie of the Year:<br />

Stephanie Bodhardt; Spirit of the HBA: Kendall Elvis and Sue Morich; and Volunteer<br />

of Year Joe Cuseo. The first Martin’s Corner video podcast communication<br />

debuted that featured upcoming events, programs, tip of the hat winners<br />

and education opportunities.


February<br />

February was all about the 37th <strong>Annual</strong> Spring Home Show. Over 200<br />

booths with everything consumers need for their home and garden.<br />

Home Show marketing was prevalent on print, radio, TV as well as social<br />

media. At this show the ATA Student Chapter competed for prize money<br />

by designing and building doghouses for the Silent Auction that benefited<br />

the Coastal Animal Rescue. 13 Pets were adopted and just under<br />

$8,000 was raised for the animal rescue.


March<br />

March came in like a lion with the first New Home Parade in 7<br />

years. <strong>HGHBA</strong> showcased 21 homes and broke new ground marketing<br />

through our own New Home Parade APP and flipbook magazine.<br />

The 47th <strong>Annual</strong> Bird Supper took place in Columbia with<br />

numerous <strong>HGHBA</strong> Members in attendance.<br />

After a seven-year hiatus the Horry-Georgetown<br />

Homebuilders Association New Home Parade was<br />

held on March 17-19 and 24-26 th featuring 20<br />

homes throughout Horry and Georgetown<br />

counties to tour. Classic Homes won the Best of<br />

Show with the highest score overall on their<br />

Harbor Club home (shown above). Listed below<br />

April is definitely Clay Month with a whopping 41 teams participating<br />

in the Shoot at Backwoods Quail Club in Hemingway.<br />

Camp Happy Days was the benefactor from the Clay Tournament<br />

Raffle sales with a check totaling $3501.51. President and CEO of<br />

The Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development enlightened<br />

the General Membership Meeting on the job growth in Horry<br />

County.<br />

April


May was a busy month filled with several <strong>HGHBA</strong> Board members<br />

attending the 5th District HBA of SC Meeting in Florence,<br />

SC. They were updated on the State plans, programs and goals.<br />

We held another successful Membership meeting with Associate<br />

Professor Rob Salvino from the Grants Center for real estate<br />

and Economic Development showing us statistically Horry and<br />

Georgetown Counties are in great shape for continued growth.<br />

While students were getting out of school in June the <strong>HGHBA</strong> was getting into the schools.<br />

Yvonne and Troy Yates spoke with rising 9th graders about going into the plumbing business;<br />

Martin Pettigrew spoke on his journey in to making his roofing business; Rob Clemons spoke<br />

on the industry opportunities as a whole and Lesly Hill spoke on the benefits for women in<br />

building careers. The Students were given small gifts each day to remind them of Careers in<br />

Construction. Mike Wooten, CEO of DDC Engineers and SC DOT Commissioner Chair served<br />

as our speaker at the June GMM. He gave us the good news on I 73 approval to move forward<br />

and other infrastructure progress.<br />

In July the golf committee was busy organizing this popular event.<br />

We met with Horry County School District CATES director Mary Beth<br />

Roach and set the schedule for the Student Chapter activities and<br />

programming. Ambassadors reached out to new members with welcome<br />

kits.<br />

August was in full swing with our golf tournament scoring above par with 64 teams on 2 courses,<br />

fun food, bucket sinker game, toilet lid hole in ones, and Shooting golf balls! To say the least it was<br />

fun and lots for the golfers to enjoy while we raised $3,805.00 for the Barnabus Horse Foundation<br />

and CAN - Champion Autism Network, raising $1,902.50 for each charity! The August GMM speaker<br />

was Georgetown County Economic Development Alliance, Executive Officer, Brian Tucker.<br />

August<br />

All of the proceeds from the “Charity Golf Gun” and “Raffle <br />

Sales” will benefit The Barnabas Horse Foundation and CAN<br />

Champion Autism Network. Barnabus provides equine-assisted <br />

therapy in a safe environment for individuals recovering from <br />

trauma or abuse. CAN-Champion Autism Network's mission is to<br />

reduce challenges and barriers to allow families with a child with<br />

Autism to have a “normal” family outing or experience, reducing<br />

sensory input and creating inviting environments for children with<br />

Autism and their parents.<br />

September<br />

September is Fall Home Improvement and Outdoor Living<br />

Show time. Record numbers of attendees came to the HIOLS.<br />

With over 200 booths showcasing their products and services.<br />

A 20-page show guide was created to help attendees maneuver<br />

the show, highlight the market place and share helpful<br />

tips from the show seminars and workshop speakers.


October’s focus was on Careers in Construction with guest speaker Dr.<br />

Marilyn Fore, HGTC President. She spoke on the development of the<br />

colleges programs that will benefit the building industry with future<br />

employees. Over 50 Academy for Technology & Academics (construction<br />

program) and St James High (CAD, and Carpentry Programs) students<br />

were inducted in to the Student Chapter of the NAHB. SC Governor<br />

Henry McMasters declared October Careers in Construction Month<br />

for the State of SC. Our own Lawrence Langdale was honored with the<br />

Thomas N. Bagnal Builder of the Year Award. The <strong>HGHBA</strong> won three<br />

State Awards for Best Communication – Martin’s Corner; Best Workforce<br />

Development – Student Chapter; and Best Electronic Promotion –<br />

New Home Parade APP.<br />

October


November is winding down the year but we were going full force with the Fall Clay Tournament.<br />

Inclimate weather forced us to change the date but 34 teams came the next week to partake in<br />

this fun event. Raffle sales of $2,470.00 were raised to benefit the Perry Children’s Fund. The<br />

General Membership Meeting was well attended and Walter Hill, Curator of the Horry County<br />

Museum spoke on our county history and how it leads to development today. The <strong>HGHBA</strong> sponsored<br />

with Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors the <strong>2017</strong> Legislative Luncheon for the Myrtle<br />

Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. A panel of seven of our legislators spoke on the topics such<br />

as I-73, Education and Hurricane evacuation.<br />

November


December<br />

December is the time of the year to give and receive. Home Builders<br />

Care gave a large donation to build a ramp for a long time member’s<br />

employee who was injured. Proceeds from the raffle Sales at the Clay<br />

Tournamanet totalled $2,470.00 which were given to the Perry Children’s<br />

Fund. And <strong>HGHBA</strong> was also on the receiving end of December<br />

our Academy For Technology & Academics Student Chapter won 2nd<br />

Place National Award for NAHB Outstanding Student Chapter!<br />

• As of October 31st <strong>HGHBA</strong> leads the state in membership growth with 8<br />

months of membership numbers trending upward totaling a positive 24.2%<br />

increase<br />

• 54 High School Seniors and Juniors joined the Student Chapter<br />

• $14,275.00 raised for local charities<br />

• 13 Animals adopted during Home Improvement & Outdoor Living Show<br />

• 3 State Awards for New Home Parade APP, Student Chapter, and Martin’s<br />

Corner - Communication<br />

• 1 National Award for 2nd place Outstanding Student Chapter<br />

• 93 people is the average number of Members attending the general<br />

membership meetings
