cat trees, plus items for the home, gift certificates from local businesses, and more. All items

will be listed with a value as well as a “Buy it Now” price for those that want to purchase the

item outright and take it with them instead of participating in the auction. Auction will close

at 3 pm on Sunday, February 23rd. Successful bidders will be contacted and asked to pick up

their auction item at the Convention Center by 10 am Monday morning.

Why I Belong to the Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association

Occassionally someone asks me why I belong to

the Horry- Georgetown Home Builders Association.

I belong because the consumer regards a Home

Builders Association as an established and reputable

firm.

I tell them I belong because I do not know all I

would like to know about the building business.

I belong because I want to attend meetings where

I can learn things and exchange ideas with others

in the home building industry.

I tell them I belong because I want to learn how

to better merchandise the single and multi-family

homes I build or the products and services I sell.

Do your homework before you start your next

building project!

I belong becaue the Association is on the firing

line every day on a twenty- four hour basis, watching

over the interests of the building Industry.

I believe , as Theodore Roosevelt Said, “Every

man owes a part of his time and money to the

business or industry in which he is engaged. No

man has moral right to withhold his support from

the organization that is striving to improve conditions

within his sphere.”

Checklist for Finding & Hiring a Good Builder

they do, ask the customers if they would hire the

builder/remodeler again.

Contact your local home builder’s association

for the names of member builders and

remodelers: www.myrtlebeachhomebuilders.org.

Make sure the builder has a permanent address

location and a good reputation with local banks

and suppliers.

Find out how long the builder has been in

the building business. It usually takes three to five

years to establish a financially sound business.

You want to make sure they will be around after

the construction is complete to service any warranties.

Make sure the builder has sufficient workers

compensation and general liability insurance.

If not, you may be liable for any construction-related

accidents on your premises.

Ask the builder to provide you with names

of previous customers. If they won’t, beware. If

Ask if you can see the builder’s work,

both completed and in progress. Check quality of

workmanship and materials.

Do you feel you can easily communicate

with the builder? Remember you will be in close

contact with them throughout the construction

process and afterward as you live in your new

home.

Make sure the builder provides you with a

complete and clearly written contract. The contract

will benefit both of you. If you are having

a new home built, get and review a copy of the

home warranty as well.

Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If

the builder is unable to pay for the materials and

labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a

potential problem. Keep in mind that less expensive

does not necessarilary mean better.

RECIPES TO MAKE, BAKE & ENJOY!

Vodka Tart Dough

INGREDIENTS

2 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

1 tsp table salt

2 TB sugar

6 oz cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1/2 cup cold vegetable shortening, cut

into small bits

1/4 cup cold vodka

1/4 cup cold water

DIRECTIONS:

Mix all the dry together. Place chopped

fat into bowl and pulse to blend

Then add liquids and mix just enough to

make the mixture whole. Chill and use.

Peach Sour Cream Tart

INGREDIENTS:

4 oz sour cream

2 oz sugar

1/4 oz cornstarch

1 eggs scrambled

½ tsp vanilla

Pinch of nutmeg

½ lb of peaches sliced

6 oz of your favorite streusel

DIRECTIONS:

One nine inch Tart Ring lined with Tart

Dough and Par Baked

Bake 400 till set about 25 to 30 minutes

Streusel Topping

4 oz butter cold diced

3 oz sugar

2 oz brown sugar

1 tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 lb all-purpose flour

2 oz rolled oats

This makes 1# of product but freezes well

and is very versatile.

Easy Chocolate Icing Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup of butter (1 stick)

2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3 cups of powdered sugar

1/3 cup of milk

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS:

Melt butter. Stir in cocoa.

Alternately add powdered sugar & milk,

beating to spreading consistency.

Add small amount of milk, if needed.

Stir in vanilla.

TIP:

If frosting is too thin to spread or pipe,

you can put it in the refrigerator to thicken

for a little bit, take it out, and then

stir so it becomes creamy again.

White Cake Recipe

PREHEAT OVEN:

Bake all cakes on 320 in convection

ovens.

Bake all cakes at 335 in normal ovens

oven.

INGREDIENTS:

2 3/4 cups sifted cake flour

4 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

4 egg whites

1 1/2 cups white sugar

3/4 cup butter

1 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon almond extract

(Absolutely Optional!)

DIRECTIONS:

Spray baking pans Well!!!

Measure sifted cake flour, baking powder,

and salt; sift together three times.

In a mixing bowl, beat egg whites

until foamy. Add 1/2 cup sugar gradually,

and continue beating only until

meringue will hold up in soft peaks.

Beat butter until smooth. Gradually

add remaining 1 cup sugar, and cream

together until light and fluffy. Add

sifted ingredients alternately with

milk a small amount at a time, beating

after each addition until smooth. Mix

in flavorings. Add meringue, and mix

thoroughly into batter. Place Batter

into Appropriate Sized Baking Dishes.

TIP:

If baking a layer cake, then fill each

pan with the same amount of batter. I

like to use a measuring cup.

Industry the Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association

partners with the Academy of Technology & Academics programs:

Building Construction I Program. These 22 students

were inducted into the NAHB Student Chapter under the Horry

Georgetown Home Builders Association. Through their membership

the participants have the opportunity to network with

people in the building industry, check out materials and statistics

from NAHB Member website, sell at the shows, connect

with other members for job openings, and hear speakers on

industry development. The Horry Georgeotwn Home Builders

Association is proud to be a part of this program. You can help

support future Building Industry Professionals by visiting the

NAHB Student Chapter Booth #7. They will have picnic tables,

benches, jenjas, cornhole games, etc. built by students to purchase.

Plus, you will be investing in their education and future.

Supportive Professional Network Available

Getting your foot in the door in any industry can

be a challenge. Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities

for high school and college students

who are training for a career in construction to

gain knowledge about the industry. For example,

the National Association of Home Builders

(NAHB) has student chapters across the country

dedicated to enriching educational experiences

for students and offers first-hand exposure to the

real world.

If you know a student that is seeking a path that

will lead to personal fulfillment, a career and technical

education (CTE) track can reap many benefits.

February is Careers and Technical Education

Month, which shines a spotlight on the many

different educational opportunities for high school

students, college students and adults. CTE

includes several different fields, such as information

technology, advanced manufacturing and

construction. Here are some of reasons students

should not overlook gaining a technical education

this year.

CTE Helps Students Stay Focused

A standard academic path isn’t best for every student

but CTE can be challenging and motivating

for some students. According to the Association

for Career & Technical Education (ACTE), taking

one CTE class for every two academic classes

minimizes the risk of students dropping out of

high school. Not only does CTE help some students

stay on track, ACTE also reports that the

average high school graduation rate for students

concentrating in CTE programs is 93 percent,

compared to an average national freshman graduation

rate of 80 percent.

Modest Educational Costs

The cost of college has risen significantly since

the 1990s and the shocking sticker price isn’t limited

to private, highly selective schools, according

to U.S. News and World Report. A technical education

not only costs less up front, the opportunity

to gain more in wages is significant. According to

ACTE data, students can attend public community

and technical colleges for a fraction of the cost

of tuition at other institutions: $3,520, on average,

in 2016-2017. Nearly a third (27 percent) of

individuals with less than an associate degree,

including licenses and certificates, earn more

than the average bachelor’s degree recipient,

ACTE reports.

Positive Job Outlook

In 2020, the youngest boomers turn 56, while

the oldest will be celebrating 74. About half of

this generation, which filled more trade positions

than any other before it or since has already

retired, and the rest are within 10 years of leaving

a vacancy. That means job prospects for CTE

students are promising, especially in residential

construction. According to the latest Bureau of

Labor Statistics data and analysis by NAHB, the

number of residential construction jobs increased

by 3,000 in December 2019.
