Why I Belong to the Horry Georgetown Home Builders AssociationOccassionally someone asks me why I belong tothe Horry- Georgetown Home Builders Association.I belong because the consumer regards a HomeBuilders Association as an established and reputablefirm.I tell them I belong because I do not know all Iwould like to know about the building business.I belong because I want to attend meetings whereI can learn things and exchange ideas with othersin the home building industry.I tell them I belong because I want to learn howto better merchandise the single and multi-familyhomes I build or the products and services I sell.Do your homework before you start your nextbuilding project!I belong becaue the Association is on the firingline every day on a twenty- four hour basis, watchingover the interests of the building Industry.I believe , as Theodore Roosevelt Said, “Everyman owes a part of his time and money to thebusiness or industry in which he is engaged. Noman has moral right to withhold his support fromthe organization that is striving to improve conditionswithin his sphere.”Checklist for Finding & Hiring a Good Builderthey do, ask the customers if they would hire thebuilder/remodeler again.Contact your local home builder’s associationfor the names of member builders andremodelers: www.myrtlebeachhomebuilders.org.Make sure the builder has a permanent addresslocation and a good reputation with local banksand suppliers.Find out how long the builder has been inthe building business. It usually takes three to fiveyears to establish a financially sound business.You want to make sure they will be around afterthe construction is complete to service any warranties.Make sure the builder has sufficient workerscompensation and general liability insurance.If not, you may be liable for any construction-relatedaccidents on your premises.Ask the builder to provide you with namesof previous customers. If they won’t, beware. IfAsk if you can see the builder’s work,both completed and in progress. Check quality ofworkmanship and materials.Do you feel you can easily communicatewith the builder? Remember you will be in closecontact with them throughout the constructionprocess and afterward as you live in your newhome.Make sure the builder provides you with acomplete and clearly written contract. The contractwill benefit both of you. If you are havinga new home built, get and review a copy of thehome warranty as well.Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. Ifthe builder is unable to pay for the materials andlabor as the project proceeds, this may indicate apotential problem. Keep in mind that less expensivedoes not necessarilary mean better.
