PSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2018
MaxxOne
Powerful security...made simple
The new MaxxOne C3C40M Network IR Bullet Camera boasts
a 4 megapixel, ⅓” CMOS sensor with progressive scan,
fronted by a 2.8 - 12mm lens featuring automatic focusing
and a motorised zoom lens. At night the camera can function
under 0 lux conditions thanks to automated IR switching, with
a range of up to 30m (98ft).
“This is a great
example of an all-inone
solution offered
at a competitive price
point”
The C3C40M utilises the latest video
compression technologies such as Ultra 265
and H.265, as well as the widely-used H.264
and MJPEG. MaxxOne’s latest offering streams at
20fps in 4MP mainstream (2592x1520) and an
impressive 30fps if you reduce the resolution to
3MP (2048x1520) - resulting in a fluid viewing
experience above and beyond the desirable 1080p
mark in either case.
Where this camera really shines is its Smart
capabilities, featuring an array of functions
including intrusion, cross line, motion and audio
detection. Surprisingly for an IR camera in this
price range, the C3C40M also manages to harness
the power of facial detection and people counting
technologies.
Alongside the camera, the box contains a
screw kit, allen key, drill template, “waterproof
requirements” sheet, waterproofing kit and a
MaxxOne IPC quick-start guide.
For testing purposes, we connected the
C3C40M camera to a generic router from a
market-leading ISP and powered it via a 12volt /
2amp power supply. The Power-over-Ethernet
option was earlier tested on the new MaxxOne
Elite NVR, and worked as expected.
Performance
Using MaxxOne’s free “Elite Tools” software, we
found the camera on our network effortlessly.
Elite Tools displayed the camera’s IP address,
device name, model, MAC address and access to
the configuration page. A live view link requiring
Internet Explorer is
also provided.
Upon entering the camera’s configuration page it
presented an incredible 20 unique options
relating to the image and exposure, network
settings, in-depth compression options for the 3
different types of stream available (main, sub and
third), a live view to check the OSD, and system
information, which conveniently featured the
camera’s serial number.
We selected the IE live view option which
brought up the camera’s login page. Upon
entering the camera’s default username and
password, a message appeared prompting to
change the password. The live view screen was
sleek and minimalist, offering well-presented
options including audio controls, “snapshot”,
“start local recording”, “enable digital zoom” and
“full screen”.
An option to change the image size to
“stretch”, “scale” or “original” is also present,
with the latter highlighting the incredible
definition and colour depth the C3C40M has to
offer. The sensor coped well with periods of high
activity and encountered negligible latency
throughout testing, even with several other
devices active on the network. This means live
view monitoring is now closer to real-time than
ever.
The digital zoom performed admirably in
replicating smaller text. We were extremely
impressed by the number of parameters available
in the setup screen. Menus were easy to navigate
and featured a high standard of English. The
smart settings, inside the “intelligent” submenu,
were simple and intuitive to configure. In
addition, there are enough advanced options to
keep even the most analytical CCTV operators
entertained.
Of special note were the “face snapshot” and
“intrusion” menus which make light work of
setting up typically complex scenarios, with an
example being multiple detection zones. A
plethora of OSD and watermark configurations
open up endless possibilities for creating a
personalised experience.
A well-crafted, IP67-rated, robust case means
the camera can be used indoors or out, day or
night, and continues recording during network
outages thanks to the 128GB-capacity Micro SD
slot.
Conclusion
Overall, the MaxxOne C3C40M is a superb 4MP
camera that provides crystal-clear, fluid images in
any situation. With the rise of AI, this is a great
example of an all-in-one solution offered at a
competitive price point. Powerful security made
simple.
