ADVENTURE: SPRING & SUMMER
Paddlers will find an endless supply of open water and
solitude in Vilas County. The Wisconsin River alone offers
nearly 50 miles of paddling from the headwaters in Land O’
Lakes south to Conover and Eagle River and west to the
St. Germain area.
Explore native history in southwestern Vilas County on the
reservation of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior
Chippewa. The George W. Brown, Jr. Ojibwe Museum &
Cultural Center 2 features fascinating exhibits including a
24-foot dugout canoe.
If you like beautiful trails, you’ll love Vilas County. Visit

trails app, featuring over 60 trails, or order a free Vilas County
Silent Sports Trail Map. A great place for nature lovers is the
Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area, where the trails will take
you to pristine lakes. Hikers interested in a longer adventure
can explore the 1.5 million acre Chequamegon-Nicolet
National Forest via the Anvil Lake Trail, just east of Eagle
River. The trail is just off Old Military Rd, an 1800s route that
follows a Native American trail used for hundreds of years.
The longest trail in the county is the nearly 50-mile Heart of
Vilas County Paved Bike Trail System, connecting

Manitowish Waters, Boulder Junction, Sayner and St. Germain.
Mountain bikers will find some family-friendly off-road riding
on the Madeline Lake Trail in the Minocqua area and rolling
single track on the WinMan Trails between Winchester and
Manitowish Waters.
Near Conover, enjoy approximately 20 miles of horseback
riding on the scenic trails at Torch Lake 13 , Ski Hill Trails
and Pioneer Creek Trails.
ATV riders can explore Vilas County’s expanding riding options.
Discover routes connecting the communities of Eagle River,
Conover, Phelps, Land O’ Lakes, St. Germain and Arbor Vitae
with links to systems east and north of Vilas County.
Adventurer/dual-sport motorcycle riders will find numerous
scenic and unpaved roads to explore.
All of these activities might make you hungry. Restaurants
in Boulder Junction or Sayner-Star Lake are good places for a
central rest stop. Head to the Eagle River Farmers’ Market
on Wednesdays and Sundays for fresh produce and baked
goods. Stop by a friendly tavern for lunch or settle in to a
lake-view table at dinner. Whether you’re looking for a classic
cocktail or unforgettable dessert, you’ll find it in Vilas County.
