Piano
All the Beethoven
piano sonatas in
Bärenreiter Urtext
editions
The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig
van Beethoven. By then all of his piano sonatas will be available
in high-quality cutting edge Bärenreiter Urtext editions, edited
by Jonathan Del Mar.
Del Mar, a worldwide authority and acclaimed Beethoven
specialist, has meticulously examined every available source and
evaluated many impressions of prints issued during Beethoven’s
lifetime. The works appear with a musical text at the forefront
of musical scholarship, accompanied by a Critical Commentary
covering all alternative readings and editorial decisions.
It need hardly be added that each edition contains an elegant and
spacious engraving and practical page turns, the emphasis always
being to reflect the character of the music in the best possible
way. Detailed Introductions on the genesis and significance of
each work are supplemented by valuable suggestions regarding
period performance practice.
Jonathan Del Mar (*1951) is a conductor and musicologist. His
edition of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, likewise published by
Bärenreiter (1996-2000), caused a sensation and has been used
by leading conductors ever since. Further Bärenreiter Urtext
editions of Beethoven’s works have been edited by Del Mar
including the Piano Concertos and Triple Concerto, the Cello
Sonatas and several string quartets. He has also produced fine
Urtext editions of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto and Symphony No. 7
as well as the Elgar Cello Concerto.
