Shadow represents the unknown, what we do not know, even in ourselves.
Where more light is present, shadows are thicker:

Light is moving matter: the infinitesimal particles of which it is composed
are the first aspect of the world of shapes. The path to it is a first step to go
beyond the light itself, to go beyond any form, beyond any sensation and
notion.
In the various cosmogonies there is a separation between shadow and light,
originally mixed, and the resolution of duality brings back to the primary
unit: light and darkness are of the same nature.
