LIVING THE ALEXANDER WAY OF LIFE by Liz Jeffries So here we are, another year gone; Christmas and New Year’s Eve done and dusted. What is your feeling about the onset of another year? Do you look back over the last year and ruminate over the best bits and the not so best bits. Are you anticipating the forthcoming year with pleasure, or dreading it? Some traditions always remain in place, including that of the New Year’s Eve party. For some years now I have gone along to the same party, which is fancy dress and always with a different theme each time, such as ‘the beach’. I remember one very inspired guest turning up in a stripe dress, holding two wooden poles and making an entrance as a deck chair! This year’s fun party theme was ‘rubbish reboots’, films, etc., that were definitely not better second time around and this got me thinking. My work and passion is all about rebooting in a positive way. I work with people who are looking for change in some way; it could be because they are in pain, suffering from stress, or not Feeling Good performing as well as they would like, which could be in front of a laptop, walking, playing an instrument. A large proportion of these difficulties can be attributed to ways we use our bodies. By and large we start off very well when we come into the world, but we never receive any proper instruction, so we muddle through in the intervening years until suddenly we are faced with postural issues which can affect our enjoyment of life just at the point in our lives when we have more time and freedom to do what we want to do rather than what others want us to do. My passion for Alexander’s discoveries with movement is that it can really enrich our lives in helping to alleviate pain and attain a real freedom of movement. Just a small subtle change in how we think, carry ourselves and carry out our activities is often all that is needed. I will always remain a ‘work in progress’, but I believe that being willing to embrace change stops us from becoming too set in our ways. So, bring on 2018 I say! In the words of the Michael Buble song above…’It’s a new dawn,.… a new day,…a new life’….so let’s start something new. P.S. One new thing I started a few years ago was border dancing, a fun and active way to start shedding the excess Christmas weight.
