ON THIS MONTH: LITERATURE Chris Cleave ‘The Mr Benn of British Letters’ “Each novel has taken me three years to write, and each one has left me a broken man at the end of it. I need six months to recover. I’m not joking. Only then can I start to think about what I might do next.” Chris Cleave takes his writing extremely seriously, and this includes his research. For his latest, Everyone Brave is Forgiven, set at the beginning of WW2, he limited his cultural diet to stuff that was around at the time. “I have a friend in the BBC who gave me access to lots of archive material. I was only listening to things like Listen with Mother. I was only reading books from that period, so I could get the speech patterns right, the modes of behaviour, the topics of conversation, the humour. I need to inhabit my characters’ world so I can make them pop and crackle on the page.” Still, he says, his wife was grateful for such subject matter. “At least there was some humour,” he says. “My second novel [The Other Hand] featured a refugee, so I spent a lot of time interviewing refugees in immigration detention centres. It was quite a traumatising experience. After that book it took me a long time to become a normal person again.” I suggest there’s something of the Mr Benn about Chris’ modus operandi. “I like that,” he says. “The Mr Benn of British letters.” Then, in a more serious tone, he reveals where the novel he’s writing at the moment is going to take us. “It’s set 20 years in the future, in a world where robots have taken all our jobs. There are a lot of people who have fallen off a cliff, because they weren’t expecting it… No-one’s safe. Robots will be able to write beautiful novels.” To get his head into the future, Chris is reading classical mythology: “the only way I can imagine the artificially intelligent beings who will rule our future is as demigods, and the closest I can get to them is by researching the Greek gods when they came to earth and messed with everyone’s heads.” At least it sounds less physically exerting than his third novel, Gold, which took the reader into the world of professional cycling. “I spent a year with a pro cycling coach and team trying to become a high-level athlete. It was like a proper mid-life crisis.” So did he get in the team? “Ha! I trained full time for a year, and I didn’t get anywhere near as fit as any of them. One day I cycled up a hill with a woman who was an Olympic champion, and for a bit I was in front of her, and I thought ‘wow’ and I looked back and saw she was fiddling with her phone on her handlebars.
