guidance? For over
six years.
What experience/
qualifications do
you have to justify
your expertise in
this field? I am a
level 7 qualified careers adviser, and I'm
registered professionally with the Career
Development Institute.
Is it for young people, or all ages? All
ages, but mainly young people.
How do you know that a particular person
is perfect for a particular job? I listen
intently, then feed back their own words
which helps people to find their own direction
and therefore jobs.
Have you ever suggested anyone make a
radical switch, and they have? No. Sometimes
people do themselves after working
with me.
How are job prospects at the moment?
Better than people imagine, especially the
range of new opportunities for young people
to gain qualifications and careers without
going to university.
Would you ever advise anyone to go into
what might be considered a ‘dying trade’
(eg print journalism!)? You have to be prepared
to adapt to change when looking ahead
at job prospects. Flexibility keeps people in
employment even as job roles change.
What’s the best/worst job you ever had?
Best job is my current day job, recruiting
business people to support careers education
in schools and colleges. The worst job was
my first job, selling knickers in a downmarket
department store!
What did your school career adviser
advise you? I didn’t have one. My university
career adviser suggested I’d make a good
career adviser… I was horrified at the time,
but 35 years on they were proved accurate!
