FOOD Erawan A two-course Thai “I bought a nice bottle of cider in Symposium before I went in, because they haven’t got a drinks licence,” says David Jarman, after recommending where I should go for a quick lunch: the Thai restaurant Erawan, on Lansdown Place. And so, equipped with a bottle of Hurstwood, I get shown to a small wooden table. The walls are wood panelled and there’s a stylised picture of an elephant on the wall. My first visit. They do a lunch deal where you get two courses for £10.95, so I choose fishcakes, with a single chilli emoji next to the listing, and ‘Drunkard Noodles’, with two. There’s some soft Thai music playing; two other tables are occupied. There are two fishcakes, ‘homemade ground fish mixed with spices and red curry paste’: they are golfball sized, and succulent, and come with some spicy dip, and a carrot fashioned like a flower and what seem to be two orchids. I eat the fishcakes as slowly as I can – they are delicious – snaffle up the carrot, and ask if I can eat the flowers. “You can do if you want,” says the waitress. “I don’t.” I don’t. I’ve chosen king prawns to go with the noodles, and they are plump and tasty, and the noodles have got a nice bit of heft to them, and there are bamboo shoots and mangetouts and basil and slices of red chilli.
