Thus the energy sector is undoubtedly the central engine for growth as its products serve as
inputs in nearly every goods and service imaginable. Oil and gas – a major part of which are
to be found in the Gulf countries - are currently the major energy-sources and will continue to
be so for the foreseeable future. However Renewable Energies are capturing an increasingly
greater share in the worldwide energy mix. This holds true for Germany, which has recently even
decided to step out of its nuclear energy program, and has over the last years already been a frontrunner
in modern technologies in the field of renewables. But also the Gulf countries are looking for
alternative energy resources in order to be able to use its fossil “black gold” for downstream industrial
diversification rather than simply exporting it or – as was the case for a long time, with associated
gas-blowing it into the air.
Use of energy, the right energy mix, energy supplies, energy technologies as well as environmental
issues, related to energy use are an important issue in the economic dialogue between Germany and
its partners in the Gulf region and bear also the potential for increased and intensified economic
cooperation and exchange.
“Energy” will also be a major theme at a joint “Energy-Majlis” planned for this year, bringing
together high-ranking decision-makers from both sides in order to build sustainable partnerships
between Germany and the GCC-countries in this crucial sector. With this edition of our Majlis magazine
we want to highlight and outline at least some important features of this topic in order to encourage
and facilitate further discussion and exchange on this important topic. n
the geRman emiRati Joint council foR industRy & commeRce (ahK)
met with dR geRhaRd haase, RepResentative winteRshall middle
ahK and talKed about the company’s long-standing pResence
in the uae and plans foR the futuRe. this is what he had to say:
HOw lONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE UAE?
Exactly three years ago I arrived in Abu Dhabi for
setting up a representation office for Wintershall.
Prior to this our company already had contacts with
ADNOC for evaluating possible ways of co-operation
in upstream oil and gas projects.
HOw lONG HAS wINTERSHAll BEEN
ACTIVE IN THE REGION?
Wintershall has historically been involved in
upstream oil and gas activities in the UAE, namely
in Dubai (DPC since end of the 70’s until April 2007
after relinquishing a 25 year production license), Ras
Al Khaimah (exploration and drilling during the mid-
4 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
80s, discovery Bukha Field) and Sharjah (exploration
activities). In Qatar Wintershall´s drilling activities date
back as long as the mid-70s and also Oman was for
a number of years an area of exploration activities
for our company.
OIl AND GAS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT
INDUSTRY IN THE REGION. wITHOUT THE
ENERGY SECTOR THE REGION wOUlD NOT
BE OF SUCH GEOSTRATEGIC IMPORTANCE.
DO YOU SEE GERMANY TO BE wEll
POSITIONED IN THE SECTOR?
Here we have to differentiate between those
companies which supply technology e.g. compressors
or special oilfield equipment, service companies and
those companies which are involved in the overall
evaluation, development and operation of oil and
gas fields, like Wintershall. Some German companies
belonging to the first categories are already well
established here in the oilfield sector for many years.
Not only major technology suppliers like Siemens,
but also some smaller mid-sized companies, offering
special technologies for the oil- and gas field sector
can be found in the UAE. Wintershall, the largest
internationally active German Oil- and Gas Company,
is the only one present in the Gulf Region. So in
total, in some energy sectors German companies
are positioned well, in others we would like to see
a higher involvement.
A COUPlE OF wEEKS AGO IT wAS ANNOUNCED
THAT SOUTH KOREA RECEIVED THREE OIl
CONCESSIONS AND IS THEREFORE THE
PREFERRED STRATEGIC PARTNER FOR THE
NExT YEARS. HOw DO YOU PERCEIVE
THE NEw JOINT VENTURE?
Korea has been a long-term customer of Abu
Dhabi’s oil and can look back on many decades of

oil and gas related cooperation projects. This activity
has been politically supported in a strategic alliance
for securing more overseas energy supply sources
for the country, which consequently has led to the
award of three concessions with some undeveloped
oil discoveries. The planned upstream investments
in the three concession areas combine exploration
and development activities which are not without
risk. It remains to be seen whether the challenging
production targets will be met, especially in the
announced timeframe.
wINTERSHAll IS CURRENTlY NEGOTIATING
FOR SOME CONCESSIONS. CAN YOU GIVE
US IN SHORT, SOME INSIGHTS INTO YOUR
PlANS?
Wintershall signed a Memorandum of Understanding
with ADNOC in 2010 and has been evaluating field
data in the Western Region, which resulted in the
proposal of alternative field development concepts
for a known hydrocarbon accumulation. In order to
properly define an optimized field development plan,
modern data need to be obtained by drilling and
dr. dalia abu samra-Rohte
German Emirati Joint Council for
Industry and Commerce (AHK)
testing new appraisal wells. We plan to start these
activities later this year. If the additional data prove
our concepts and all involved partners´ estimations,
a concession agreement is planned to be signed.
Besides this project Wintershall is interested in
building a sustainable upstream production portfolio
which will establish the company as one of the “new”
upstream players in Abu Dhabi. From our Emirati
colleagues we always hear: “You are late, but not
too late!”
YOU HAVE wORKED IN SEVERAl OTHER
COUNTRIES wORlDwIDE, DO YOU FIND
THAT THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS DIFFERS?
Yes, every country or culture has its local
characteristics. From my time in Oman some 25
years ago I expected many meetings to agree on
terms which proved to be true. It is, however, in
both sides´ interests to negotiate on a win-win basis,
which we think is true in our case.
GERMANY HAS, APART FROM
wINTERSHAll, NO OTHER MAJOR
OIl ExPlORATION COMPANY AND
wITH REGARDS TO NATURAl GAS, IT
IS RATHER DEPENDENT ON SUPPlIES
FROM RUSSIA. DO YOU THINK THAT
THE ENERGY SECURITY OF GERMANY
COUlD BE ENHANCED BY A ClOSER
COOPERATION wITH THE GUlF
STATES, SUCH AS lNG FROM QATAR
OR OIl SUPPlIES FROM UAE OR OTHER
GUlF STATES, RATHER THAN BEING
DEPENDENT ON THE SPOT MARKETS?
Our cooperation with Russia, namely Gazprom,
has proven to be very successful for more than 20
years now. Rather than talking about dependency
I would name it “partnership” as both, Wintershall
and Gazprom, joined forces in a well-balanced 50/50
venture: In this kind of setup the gas supply side of
Russia is as dependent on its customers in Germany or
Europe and vice versa. Western Europe needs the gas
from Russia and Russia needs the European market.
Both partners will do their utmost to keep the gas
INTERVIEW
stream flowing continuously. During very harsh winter
conditions in Russia, when domestic gas demand is
highest, the underground gas storages in Western
Europe will provide the required gas volumes which
have been filled during the summer months. LNG,
either long-term contracts or spot supplies, also from
Qatar or other Gulf States are likely to play a more
important role in Europe in the future, but I do not
foresee a major replacement of Russian gas deliveries.
And we shall also not forget the North Sea region
which will continue delivering oil and gas to Europe.
wINTERSHAll IS OFFERING STUDENT
INTERNSHIPS TO UAE NATIONAlS. IS
IT wEll ACCEPTED AMONG THE UAE
NATIONAlS & CAN YOU TEll US ABOUT
THE DIFFERENT TRAINING MODUlES IN
KASSEl?
In 2010 and 2011 we hosted two student groups
of The Petroleum Institute of Abu Dhabi who visited
our installations in Germany and the Netherlands.
We have offered individual internships to petroleum
engineers or geoscientists who would like to learn
from our experts at our headquarters in Kassel,
Germany. We integrate young students into our
project teams for learning “on the job” in a similar
fashion as we offer it to new professional intakes
who pass through a so called two-year “SPEAD”
program which will expose young professionals to
many different challenges in different teams within
the Wintershall organization in Germany and abroad.
AS THE VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE AHK,
wHAT ADVISE DO YOU HAVE FOR GERMAN
COMPANIES INTERESTED IN THE UAE
MARKET?
The establishment of a local office or representation
is – from my point of view – a prerequisite to be
able to generate business here. People who have
not been exposed to the culture of the Gulf Region
should, prior to travelling to the UAE, attend at least
a cultural awareness course which will enable them
to reflect on the differences in daily life compared
to Germany.
Long-term thinking and win-win deals, which
are not only based on written contracts but also
over time on trust will eventually lead to successful
business relationships. Those who persevere will be
here for a long time as the UAE will play an important
role in the decades to come for providing stable oil-
and gas supplies to the energy-deprived countries
around the world. n
6 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
Apart from a small dent in the export
statistics in 2008, German exports to
the UAE have been continuously rising
and have reached the same level as that
of India, the UAE’s top trading partner. However, as
Germany does not purchase any oil and gas from the
region, the trade balance is relatively unequal. The
aim is to equalize the relationship and as Germany
is not buying any resources it could instead offer its
main strength, know-how transfer. This cooperation
is already illustrated in a number of business sectors.
On a political level, the partnership has been
steadily growing through numerous high ranking
political visits. The first one was in 2003 when former
Chancellor Schröder visited the UAE. He was the first
Chancellor since Helmut Schmidt, who had visited the
UAE in 1982 on a stopover. “Schröder was one of the
last Statespersons received by the former President
H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,“ says Jürgen
Steltzer, who was the German Ambassador at that
time. During the visit of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed
Al Nahyan, the then Deputy Prime Minister, to Berlin
in April 2004, the Memorandum of Understanding
between both countries was signed and the strategic
partnership announced. An intensified political dialogue
was embarked upon which is taking place till date.
“After the foundation of the strategic partnership an
increase in political and business delegations were
quite obvious”, adds Steltzer.
The strategic partnership had a very positive impact
on the economic development of the relationship
between both countries. Today numerous sectors
show a clear appreciation of German products and
technology. An example is the renewable energy sector.
Since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership,
the German Federal Ministry of Economics and
Technology has a keen focus on the UAE market and
has introduced a program called “The German Export
Initiative - Renewable Energy”, which has become a
tool for supporting German companies entering the
market. The Masdar Project has especially been the
focus for German companies in the field, resulting
in a strong cooperation and Masdar’s investments in
Germany have marked a milestone in the relationship.
The backbone of Germany’s industry are Small and
Medium sized Enterprises. This has helped Germany
to emerge as a rather strong partner, out of the
financial situation in Europe and has made the country
highly esteemed by its partners. A Memorandum of
Understanding which was signed by the German
Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology
and the UAE Federal Ministry of Economy aims to
exchange expertise and know-how in establishing
SMEs in the UAE.
In the medical field the cooperation is numerous.
Engineering companies are participating in the planning
of a University Campus and the prominent Joint Venture
between Munich Re and Abu Dhabi government,
Daman has contributed to the know-how transfer.
As Germany is lacking in natural resources it has
historically not developed large oil and gas companies
like some of its neighbouring states. However,
companies like Linde and Uhde are contributing to
the petrochemical sector and the German Wintershall
is currently discussing concessions in Abu Dhabi.
Furthermore, a number of Small and Medium
enterprises are contributing equipment of a high
technological level.
The German Emirati Joint Council for Industry
and Commerce organises several committees in the
highlighted sectors in order to exchange ideas and
know-how among business people. During this year’s
General Assembly the results of the last business year
will be presented and the 500 members from the UAE
and Germany will discuss the upcoming sectors and
networking events. n

The installation of solar panels is part of the
worldwide initiative “dena Solar Roofs Program”
coordinated by the German Energy Agency - Deutsche
by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and
MADE IN GERMANY
MADE IN GERMANY
Exclusively produced in Germany under the
requirements of EN ISO 9001 standard, RENITHERM
high-quality intumescent coatings for structural steel
maintain the resistance time of the load bearing
structure of a building as long as possible. Thus
people are helped to escape the danger zone while
material damages are also minimised.
The high performance and decorative thin film
coatings, with an average thickness of about 1mm
and a wide range of colours, are also an effective
and aesthetic heat shild. Under extremely high
temperatures, the steel coating expands by an
endothermic reaction to form a foam barrier of
30-50 times its original thickness, thus preventing
from fire and heat. A full line of tests and approval
procedures guarantee a comprehenisve fire protection,
according to Britsh standard 476:21, internationally
known as the branch’s bench mark.
NDIA‘s new hangar is 200 meters wide, 500
meters long and 40 meters high. It is designed to
be the central maintenance hub for Qatar Airways’
international fleet. Located in the midfield area
it is capable of handling up to eight wide-body
The power plant was technically implemented by
Empuron, in cooperation with Baer Solar, Active Solar
and Solarwatt and represents the second Solar Roofs
Project in the UAE.
Besides the economic advantage for the school
the educational aspect is predominant. The PV Plant
is currently producing 8,640 kWp. A board has been
installed in the entrance hall of the school, illustrating
the CO2 reduction of three different technologies of
solar modules (monocrystallin, polycristallin and thin
film technology). The three different modules give
students the possibility to see the different results
according to the material.
IN x-lIFE QUAlITY!
After successfully launching series T7FC in X-life
quality, Schaeffler Industrial has changed the other
FAG tapered roller bearings series to X-life quality.
During this process, the entire product range of
products up to 635 mm outside diameter as well as
bearings for wind power applications with outside
diameters greater than 1,600 mm will be switched
to X-life quality.
Outstanding performance in every conceivable
size - FAG tapered roller bearings E1 offer you
the widest range in premium quality. With a 70%
increase in operating life and a 20% increase in
dynamic load ratings, they are far ahead of standard
bearings in terms of efficiency.
8 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
A package of technical measures was developed
and implemented in order to fulfill the ambitious
X-life criteria, including premium material with
increased alloy quality, optimization of geometry in
terms of dimensional and running accuracy, improved
surface treatment for reducing roughness and the
highest-possible precision in manufacturing and a
logarithmic roller profile to prevent peak stressing.
The result is that X-life tapered roller bearings can
be operated under full load from the very beginning
– running-in time is no longer required and X-life
tapered roller bearings are also suitable for high
preload and therefore allow precise adjustment
and high rigidity.
Practically, X-Life quality bearings will additionally
offer:
n Up to 75% lower friction which leads to higher
reliability and efficiency when operating machinery.
n The increase in technical performance data,
especially the load ratings, ensures better
bearing performance and therefore even higher
operational safety.
n The reduced generation of heat during operation
improves the lubrication conditions and operating
life is increased.
n The new design elements enable an elastohydrodynamic
lubricant film to be developed quickly and
therefore provide high performance even during
difficult lubrication conditions.
In the field of Power Generation, taper roller
bearings are found in critical applications such as
compressors, blowers, pumps, fans, electric motors
and generators. With the increasing trend towards
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), FAG taper roller
bearings in X-Life quality will contribute significantly
towards reducing maintenance and operation costs
and increasing plant availability.
It is surprising how little the Gulf countries are
focusing on the power of market economics
in order to make the most efficient use of
their state budgets. While the state is still the
pervasive force in the region`s economies, stateowned
companies, governmental agencies and
sovereign wealth funds are not the most prominent
expression of governmental participation in the
economy – rather it is government imposed quotas
in labor markets, the licensing system and public
10 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
subsidies which lead to significant misallocation
of funds and that are unsustainable in the long
run. For example, the prices for petrol were set
during a time when oil prices were below $10
per barrel whereas now they are above $100 per
barrel; the difference between the subsidized
prices and world-market prices are borne by the
states. Similar developments can be found with
electricity and water.
Subsidized prices have lost their function as
indicators of scarcity and hence their directive
effects. This led over time to a situation in which
the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries
have the highest carbon dioxide foot print per
capita globally. According to the International
Energy Agency, four of the five biggest emitters
of carbon dioxide per capita are GCC countries
prof. dr. bernd J. hoefer
Chairman & CEO
A9C Capital
with Qatar emitting about four times more than
Germany. The Gulf countries also have the highest
water consumption per capita, in UAE about five
times more than in Germany and are increasingly
becoming the “market of last resort” for products
that can no longer be sold elsewhere: inefficient
air-conditioning systems, electric heating, or sport
utility vehicles that consume 20 litres or more on
100 km. Ironically, efficient and environmentally
friendly (relatively speaking) fuels such as low sulphur
diesel are being exported from GCC to Europe.
Subsidies might also create enormous windfall
profits for some producers from foreign countries
because competitive disadvantages of their
iRonically, efficient and enviRonmentally fRiendly fuels aRe
being expoRted fRom gcc to euRope.
products (for example, high fuel consumption)
are being levelled through domestic subsidies
(for example, fuel prices): in practise therefore,

national subsidies are being exported. This is an
area with significant savings potential to be used
for social infrastructure, education and research
& development.
Reducing subsidies is of course, a complex and
difficult political process. However, if it is politically
necessary to spend money on subsidies, why
then spend it on old, environmentally unfriendly
technologies and their non-local producers and not
on innovative, environmentally friendly products
which also support the local economy?
Looking at subsidized energy supplies, production
capacity is aligned with peak demand, which in
GCC countries is mainly driven by air conditioning
systems during the summer. Estimates for UAE
show that approximately 70 per cent of energy
demand is related to air conditioning. In Bahrain,
the average monthly energy consumption during
the summer is about 40 per cent higher than
during the winter – in absolute terms this amounts
to about 1,000 MW/h, which is the capacity of an
entire power plant. It would most likely be cheaper
for the governments to provide small solar power
systems to take care of solar heating and cooling
to every household in the respective country, free
of charge, than to build additional conventional
(or nuclear) power plants to cover the additional
demand for energy.
Furthermore, this would constitute a major
economic stimulus, development and employment
program, if one was to succeed in manufacturing
these products (e.g. solar panels) locally and with
local workers to install the systems.
But don`t get me wrong: It might be advisable
to convert governmental subsidies into local
investment programs, but first and foremost
the local companies and entrepreneurs have
to invest into their economy – not least
to demonstrate a sufficient level of
confidence in the local markets
to induce foreign investors to
put their money into the
region too. n
Downhill Conveyor Systems with Electric Power Generation, an Environmental Solution
From the Mountain to the Valley
A conveyor system project over 9000 m was requested by our client who operates the largest quarry in the Middle East. As a rst step our
Engineering department designed the system to meet the Client's requirement. We then manufactured the rst section and installed the
system as per the following description: 980 m conveyor system,1400 mm belt width, capacity 3000 t/h, speed 2,8 m/s, product lime
stone 0-400 mm.
All conveyor belts, crusher and feeders are controlled by PLC controls. If sucient material supply is given the belts will be slowed
down through a frequency control system which adjusts the speed of the belt. The potential energy of the system is regenerated into
electrical energy through the braking power of the system and the resultant energy gained is fed back into the power Grid. For the
initial section constructed electrical power generation is up to 320 KW/h at a capacity of 3000 t/h. The power generation for the
complete system of approximately 9000m of downhill conveyor will be 2200 KW/h.
S LAR POWER
The Sun alone – a star 150 million kilometres
distant from the Earth, emits more energy
in just one hour than can be utilized
worldwide in one year. Precisely speaking,
the power incident on our planet from the Sun
is 166 petawatts (PW), 10,000 times the current
global energy consumption. After deducting the
energy reflected back into space or absorbed by
clouds, the residual energy remains of 85 PW. This
means more than 5,000 times the amount of what
is required becomes available for capture. Out of
this, maximum energy is available via desert solar,
followed by ocean thermal, wind, and geothermal
renewable resources. The remaining consists of
river hydroelectric, biomass, open ocean wave,
tidal and coastal wave.
So far, less than 1% of the existing solar energy is
being captured by presently available technologies,
with no single method being capable of meeting
current levels of power consumption. Therefore, fossil
fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil (petroleum),
continue to remain in focus. Unfortunately these
are finite resources of energy, insufficient for our
steadily growing population. It is estimated that
coal reserves will run out in approximately 130
years, natural gas in 60 years and oil in around 40
years. Moreover, since oil is an essential resource
useable in various industries, it cannot be burned
as fuel for much longer. Similarly, the consumption
of gas and coal must be reduced. Aside from the
fossil fuels, alternative energy sources such as
nuclear fission (splitting of atomic nuclei) and
nuclear fusion (joining two or more atomic nuclei)
are also available. These are however, of limited
usage due to diminishing uranium resources, as
well as immense environmental impact caused by
the radioactive waste. Considering this, as well
as the rather low affectiveness of energy supply
from nuclear power plants measured at circa 5.7%
of world’s total energy, this source seems to be
rather outdated and not the future’s solution to
the planet’s energy problems.
Renewable energy sources are characterized by
sustainability, minimal pollution and lack of noise.
The most precious and abundant, solar energy is
in also a direct or indirect trigger for development
of other energies. Solar energy is the cleanest and
greenest of all forms of renewable energies, and
is commonly utilized to generate electricity via
photovoltaics, solar thermal or hybrid systems.
Furthermore, it can be employed to produce high
purity solar hydrogen, through photo-electrolysis
of water. Such hydrogen can subsequently be
utilized for instance, as fuel. Last, but not least,
conversion of salty water into drinking water
via solar desalination may become particularly
advantageous in water-deficient regions of the
world. The emergence of the photovoltaic dates
back to 1839, when the discovery of photovoltaic
effect in electrolytic cell under light exposure, was
made. The 1960s brought first application of silicon
in electronics and space projects. This began a new
era of fast-paced development of this promising
technology. In the simplest definition, a PV cell
is an electrical device that enables conversion
of available sunlight directly into electricity. The
technology utilizes a semiconductor, which in
most cases consists of a silicon wafer of crystalline
structure or a non-crystalline amorphous silicon
form. Currently, approximately 85% of all solar
Renewable eneRgy souRces aRe chaRacteRized by sustainability,
minimal pollution and lacK of noise.
cells in use around the world employ crystalline
and polycrystalline wafer silicon. Silicon is the
second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust,
however, it rarely occurs in a pure and free form.
It can be found in dust, sand or planetoids, as
various forms of silicon dioxide (silica) or silicates.
The mono-crystalline structure of silicon (c-Si) is

dr. anna uzarowska
German Emirati Joint Council
for Industry and Commerce (AHK)
the purest and lowest in defects. As a result of laborious production and
purification, it is also very costly. Poly-crystalline silicon (pc-Si), which is
produced using numerous grades of mono-crystalline silicon, is cheaper in
production and can be fabricated over large areas. c-Si and pc-Si waferbased
PV cells are characterized by high efficiencies of 25 and 20%,
respectively, which explains their extensive usage.
The progress in PV technology led to the development of 2nd generation
solar cells, called thin-film. Thin-film PV cells offer significantly reduced
thickness and can be deposited on low-cost, flexible substrates, such as glass
or plastic. They can be built of amorphous silicon (a-Si), which in contrary
to crystalline wafers is composed of silicon atoms in a thin layer. However,
this structure also brings with its limitations. The stability of a-Si solar cell
drops with the increase of temperatures, which in consequence decreases
the lifetime of the cell. The process is called a light-induced degradation.
The efficiency of a-Si thin-film cells reach about 14% and is currently
lower than that of wafer-based cells. Although abundant and non-toxic,
alternative raw materials are being sought in order to reduce the amount
of silicon required for PV technologies. Lower-priced semiconductors for
thin-film cells include Cadmium Telluride (CdTe), Copper Indium diselenide
(CIS), or Copper Indium Gallium selenide (CIGS). CdTe cell is characterized
by lowest cost and relatively high efficiencies (17%), but the toxic effect
of Cadmium and limited resources of Telluride restrain faster development
of this type of cells at the moment. CIS or CIGS cells demonstrate even
higher efficiencies under laboratory conditions, but the material is difficult
to work with and relatively expensive.
Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) had been announced as a 3rd generation
thin-film solar technology due to its low cost, simplicity in fabrication and
low requirement for light. DSSC is not sensitive to defects in semiconductors,
longer lasting, and works at wide incident angles. Its efficiency is currently
comparable to that of amorphous silicon solar cells. DSSC utilizes dyes
(also called sensitizers) such as ruthenium complexes or metal-free organic
dyes to capture sunlight in a photo-electrochemical reaction similar to
photosynthesis. The dyes absorb both sun- and fluorescent light, hence
are more efficient in indoor lights. Disadvantages include degradation of
DSSC when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, and high toxicity of ruthenium
compounds. Stability of the DSSC depends on the type of electrolyte
systems used, with liquid electrolyte being less favourable than solid,
due to its physical characteristics in extreme temperatures. It is predicted,
that DSSC shall in the near future compete with the traditional thin-film
solar technologies.
It is worth mentioning here, that apart from massive PV constructions
on the rooftops, building facades, or solar farms, PV cells are also applied
in small, every-day-use devices such as solar calculators and watches or in
public areas in parking meters, telephone boxes, or street lighting.
Unlike photovoltaics which convert sunlight directly into electricity,
solar thermal technology utilizes the captured heat of the sun for heating/
cooling purposes and for electricity generation via steam or gas-powered
turbines. Due to high oil and gas prices and the need for climate protection,
more and more solar thermal energy systems are being introduced, mainly
for residential heating. In hot areas, cooling schemes supported by solar
energy are of particular interest. Solar thermal technology is easier, cheaper
and larger-scale than photovoltaics, but requires direct solar radiation.
That is why it is more effective in sunny regions. The efficiency of the
technology strongly depends on the collection/concentration system. Flat
panel collectors (unglazed or glazed) and solar evacuated tube collectors,
also called non-concentrating systems are
commonly utilized for swimming pool/household
water- and space heating. They can theoretically
achieve maximal temperatures of 200°C, with
evacuated tube collectors being more durable and
effective in low outdoor temperatures than the
flat panels. More complex concentrating systems
such as dishes, linear or parabolic troughs, and
solar power towers (central receiver systems) can
achieve temperatures of up to 500°C, thus being
suitable for electricity generation. They are typically
operated on an industrial scale within solar power
plants. Concentrating collectors can additionally
be coupled with so-called single or dual axis solar
tracking devices, which orients them towards the
sun in order to enable maximum solar heat capture.
While dish technology demonstrates best
prospects from the economic point of view, with
maximum efficiencies of 24% achieved by large,
suitably designed systems, it is parabolic troughs
that have received the greatest attention over the
past years. Trough solar systems are the simplest
of solar thermal technologies and can run on
about 15-20% sunlight to electricity conversion
efficiency. It is estimated that nearly 90% of the
installed concentrated solar power (CSP) systems
worldwide are parabolic troughs. For solar
towers, the efficiency is measured at around 17-
20%. Hybridizations with either conventional or
renewable systems offer the possibility of further
improving the CSP value. The ultimate advantage
of CSP plants is a storage ability of day-collected
heat for later use. This can be achieved
when exploiting molten salt, ceramics or
phase-change media. If necessary, fossil or
renewable fuels can be used to co-run the
plant, to provide power capacity whenever
required. The disadvantages are large areas
required for solar power plants and the need for
mechanical maintenance, including cleaning of
the solar system. Due to the enormous potential
of solar thermal power plants, it is predicted
that solar thermal shall play a major role in the
global energy supply of the future, possibly as
decentralized combined heat, cooling and power.
Further types of renewable energies widely
utilized in the developed world include wind
energy - an alternative to solar in cold and shady
regions, hydroelectric power – source of clean
energy derived from waterways, geothermal energy
– the natural heat stored in the Earth, biogas –
product of fermentation of organic matter/waste
or wastewater, or biofuels – such as bio-diesel,
bio-ethanol or bio-gas derived from biomass. Each
type has its advantages and disadvantages; hence
usage of a mixture of energies in hybrid systems
can appear to be most effective, predominantly
in sustainable building. Moreover, renewables
can be supported by non-renewables, such as
batteries, converters, generators, or fossil fuels in
order to maximize energy storage and distribution
during non-collection hours. Incentives or feed-on
tariffs offered by some governments to promote
utilization of renewables are an open invitation
for potential green energy users.
The geographical location of the United Arab
Emirates (UAE), with over 300 sunny days a year
offers particularly advantageous conditions for
capturing solar energy. Moreover, when considering
the highest per capita ecological footprint including
the third highest CO2 emissions and one of the
highest water usages in the world, changes in
energy politics of the country seem inevitable. The
2020 vision of 7% of UAEs energy demand being
covered by renewables is, however a challenging
plan due to certain obstacles. These include, but are
not limited to relatively low, subsidized electricity
and water prices, as well as lower performance of
solar systems due to dusty air conditions, which
requires development of additional cleaning system
technologies.
Several “green” projects and initiatives in the
fields of renewable energies have already begun
or are under examination in the Emirates. These
include ambitious projects such as Abu Dhabi’s
Masdar City, International Renewable Energy
Agency (IRENA), Emirates Solar Industry Association
(ESIA), or Estidama eco-building concept. Initiatives
in Dubai comprise TechnoPark, Enpark, Emirates
Green Building Council (EGBC) and Middle East
Centre for Sustainable Development, while Ras Al
Khaimah can be acknowledged for its Solar Islands
project. Besides these initiatives, international
events such as the World Future Energy Summit
coupled with Zayed Future Energy Prize, or the
annual Water Energy Technology & Environment
Exhibition (WETEX) allow the oil & gas rich country’s
dream for industry diversification to come true. n
The Masdar initiative also played a large
role in providing opportunities for German
companies to play a part in this strategic
development. With the establishment
of the Masdar Initiative in Abu Dhabi five years
ago, a milestone in the application of Renewable
Energies in the UAE was laid. The construction
of the “Eco City”, Masdar City, is already partly
realized. The energy consumption of Masdar City
is planned to be completely fulfilled by Renewable
Energy sources. Hence opportunities for German
solar energy companies will arise in the context
of the Masdar project as well as for solutions in
remote rural areas.
This year, there were 29 German exhibitors
present on the German pavilion alone, with a
total of 650 companies present at the Summit.
With 20 national pavilions, over 26,000 attendees
(3000 delegates) passed through the exhibition.
According to a number of German companies at
the exhibition, they were content with the amount
of high-end meetings they had over the four day
period. This summit gave exhibitors and visitors alike
the opportunity to contribute towards reaching
common environmental goals.
During the political aspect of the event,
at the event. Both political figures had a number
of successful and productive meetings throughout
their visit in the UAE as well.
The Zayed Future Energy Prize featured more
winners this year after it decided to expand the
winning categories to three instead of one: SMEs
& NGOs, Lifetime Achievement for an Individual,
and Large Corporations. The UK-based Carbon
Disclosure Project, which encouraged 382 of the
world’s top 500 companies to disclose their carbon
emissions, won the prize of US$1.5 million for the
SMEs & NGOs category. Dr. Ashok Gadgil, from the
University of California, won the lifetime achievement
category (US$500,000) for his work including the
Darfur stove project. The large corporations’ prize
went to Schneider Electric, a French company. n
When a drilling expedition found
oil in 1962, after more than three
decades of unsuccessful exploration
efforts, the Sultanate of Oman was
catapulted from an underdeveloped country to the
modern age. Since then, oil and gas production
have played a major role in the state’s economy
and still accounts for 68% of the Sultanate’s public
revenue in spite of diversification efforts. With
current oil production at around 900,000 bpd
and reserves of 4.9 billion barrels, Oman is not on
the same pace as other gulf states, but still offers
interesting opportunities for potential investors.
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), in which
the government holds a majority stake, is the
major producer of oil and gas in the Sultanate.
Other companies with interest in PDO include
Royal Dutch Shell with 34% interest, Total with
4% and Partex with 2%. In 2011 PDO accounted
16 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
DWiNDliNg
OIL & gAS
resOurces
for 90% of oil production and almost all of the
country’s natural gas supply.
In order to diversify the country’s economy and
decrease dependency on declining oil reserves,
the Omani government has set up an ambitious
development plan which aims to reduce the oil
sector’s contribution to GDP to 9% by 2020.
Nevertheless, the government tries to stretch the
dwindling oil reserves as long as possible through
the use of enhanced oil recovery techniques (EOR),
in order to give the economy more time to diversify.
Using these techniques, it is possible to recover up
to 60% of an oil reservoir in comparison to the
industry norm of 10-15% through primary and
25-40% through secondary recovery techniques.
Mainly because of these techniques, Oman was able
to boost oil production in recent years and reach
the same production levels as in its peak in the
year 2000. Primary oil recovery mainly works with
natural mechanisms whereas secondary recovery
either uses pumps or aims to increase the pressure
in the reservoir through the injection of water.
Enhanced oil recovery methods go one step
further. Through the injection of steam, the oil
and rock is heated such that the chemical and
physical properties of both rock and fluid are
altered, thus allowing it to flow, a process that is
different from that of secondary recovery stage.
Further EOR methods include microbial and
chemical injections. According to Dr. Zaid Al-Siyabi,
Director General of Oil and Gas Exploration and
Production at the Ministry of Oil and Gas, Oman
offers tremendous opportunities for foreign
companies in this sector, whether as operators
or service and technology providers “In order to
sustain oil production for the country, Oman has to
look for other avenues. Conventional methods have
worked, yielding exemplary success in some cases.
However, such methods have to be augmented
by high-end technologies. Oman is probably the
only place where a variety of EOR technologies
are being used at the same time, such as steam

flood, polymer injection, miscible gas injection
and thermally assisted Gas Oil Gravity Drainage
(TA-GOGD), which is the first large-scale project
ever done in the industry. We have also ventured
into the unconventional shale oil, which is gaining
a lot of focus in North America.” Dr. Al-Siyabi
also emphasized on the importance of training
Omanis in this field “So that we may eventually
be able to share the expertise and experience
gained, with others”.
But training and technology support in the area
of Enhanced Oil Recovery are not the only fields
foreign investors should take a look at.
The gas industry plays a key role in the
Omani diversification efforts. With proven gas
reserves of around 19 trillion ft³ and a current
production rate of 3 billion ft³ per day, there is
still great potential especially when considering
that the Omani government plans on raising the
contribution of the gas industry to the GDP from
the current 4% to 10% by 2020. Gas production
between January and October 2011 for instance,
was up 6.1% compared to the same period last
year. Because of the large geological diversity of
the country and the fact that much of the gas
is located in high depths new technologies and
expertise are needed to achieve these ambitions
plans. In addition to this, most of the Omani power
Oman enjoys a variety of natural
resources, which is ideal for generating
what is known as renewable energy.
According to Professor Gastli, Chairman
of Sultan Qaboos University- Renewable and
Sustainable Energy Research Group (RASERG),
“Oman is blessed with a very high potential for
plants are using natural gas as the main resource
although the potential of other resources such as
coal, nuclear and renewables are currently being
reviewed due to the high gas price.
One example for the visibility of the gas boom
is Sohar. The coastal town with its port and free
zone is one of the major industrial centers in Oman.
Due to the constantly high demand for energy for
industrial purposes, gas is imported to this area
from Qatar within the so called “Dolphin project”,
although Oman is a net exporter of natural gas.
For German companies the gas sector offers
huge potentials. Dr Al-Siyabi states that there are
huge efforts being made by the Government to
supply more gas to the growing industry in all
parts of Oman. The Ministry of Oil & Gas is in
full steam with natural gas exploration, through
its operators such as PDO, BP, Oxy & Petronas
targeting the tight and unconventional role gas
plays. On the service side, Siemens for instance
received a major order in 2010 with an overall
investment volume of USD 1.7 billion for two
turnkey combined cycle power plants including
gas turbines. These power plants not only use
the gas to drive a turbine but also the developing
heat to make steam which in turn drives additional
turbines. “Thanks to state-of-the-art technology
our plants will set new benchmarks in terms of
solar energy and exhibits one of the top solar
energy resources in the world. However, wind
energy resources are considered moderate and
are mainly located on the coastal and southern
part of the country”.
Despite this fact, Oman lacks sufficient data
and information about the potential uses for
renewable energy. So far, Oman has 30 metrological
stations providing measurement of ground wind
speed, and only nine stations providing data on
solar insulation.
As a result, The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU)
in Oman is focusing intensely on renewable energy
researches. Currently, the SQU’s Renewable and
Sustainable Energy Research Group (RASERG) is
conducting several interrelated researches under
full sponsorship of the Research Council, the first
one being “solar and wind resource assessment”
which evaluates the solar and wind energy resources
in Oman, through analysis of wide geographical
and meteorological data and development of
environmental compatibility and efficiency”, Michael
Suess, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division
of Siemens Energy said. Furthermore Siemens
holds long term service contracts for the plants.
In conclusion, the so called dwindling oil and
gas resources, what seems like a mutually exclusive
antilogism at first glance is not in Oman, are picking
up and the country foresees significant industry
growth. In addition, the stable political conditions
and the need for investments in the areas of EOR
and high technology in tight and unconventional
gas exploration and development, and electricity
generation makes it more than worth taking a
closer look at the Sultanate. n
“The locations are studied carefully before they
are chosen. Some of the factors taken into
consideration are the accessibility of land, proximity
to the existing or planned grid, topography; land
should be flat to avoid the cost of flattening the
land, in addition to determining the ownership
to check for its availability. Determining the best
locations is also very important for good future
planning, that when a land is chosen it is kept
for that purpose,”, adding that the research is
in its final phase of refining maps yet further
measurements need to be conducted as banks will
only support the cause if outcomes are profitable.
The generated maps with the most suitable areas
for wind and solar energy investment will soon be
available to the public; creating an atlas for solar
and wind energy, more information on which can
be found at http://rera-oman.info.
The second stage of research is “Quantitative
Assessment of Dust Deposition and its Effect on
MAJLIS ISSUE 08 17

FOCUS - OMAN
Solar Energy Systems in Selected Sites in Oman”
where dust is considered as one of the main
constraints for the future implementation of
large solar power plant systems. This is mainly
due to the coupling effect of the climate and
ecosystem in the country, as well as the aridity
of the climate since it generates plenty of dust
in the lower atmosphere. Furthermore, research
was conducted to study the aerosol over Oman
and dust accumulation using satellite imagery and
ground measurements, studying the physics of dust
particles adhering to PV(Photovoltaic) panels and
the various factors affecting adhesion (wind, fog,
dew point, etc.). Finally, to determine the effect
of dust accumulation on the PV panels’ efficiency
for different solar cell technologies, research is
still in its primary phase but progress continuously
gets updated on the following website http://
dust.rera-oman.info
The third stage is the smart grid in Oman
which will have to integrate all energy plants.
Researchers are therefore investigating the legibility
of Oman’s existing grid and the requirements to
establish an effective and efficient grid within a
convenient budget.
18 ISSUE 07 MAJLIS
“The delay of the development of renewable
energy in Oman is mainly due to the absence of
a clear regulatory framework, in addition to the
lack of public responsiveness. However, it is all
positively changing as the awareness is building up
very quickly and noticeably” Says Professor Gastli,
elaborating that if the outcomes of renewable
energy versus nonrenewable energy are correctly
calculated in the long run it will result in a win-win
situation for both the government and the citizen.
An example for that is a study conducted by the
SQU about “Seeb Roof PV” which indicates that
if an area of 8.8 km2 of a total of 31,182 roofs
in the Seeb area, use rooftop PV panels, they will
be able to generate a total annual electric energy
almost equivalent to that of a 300 MW power
plant. It was also found that if the household
owners pay 50% and the government pays the
other 50% of the initial Solar Water Heating cost,
the government will achieve the same benefits and
return rates as the home owner; this means that
the investment made by the government through
giving incentives and grants will have its returns
and both the government and the home owners
would have very similar IRR and payback periods
dalia mag
German Industry and Commerce
Office (AHK) Oman
(the calculated pre-tax IRR for assets is about 12%
and the simple payback period is about 10 years).
If this project is implemented in the total Seeb
area, then the total annual energy saving is about
335 GWh, which is equivalent to a total annual
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission Reduction of
about 148,590 tCO2, or total equivalent saving
in oil consumption of 2,625,374 barrels/year
which is also equivalent to almost to 300 million
dollars/year. There is considerable gain in both
energy saving and minimizing the GHG emissions,
in addition to the profitable investment for both
house owners and the Government
Oman has great potential for becoming one of
the leading countries in the region with regards
to using renewable energies. The awareness is
steadily increasing and hopefully positive steps
will be visible in the near future. Oman is now
open to new ideas since the government is only
keeping the supervision and control site while
most of the generation of electricity is becoming
private, therefore there is a great potential for
investment in advanced and efficient renewable
energy technologies. n

Carbon ManageMent in the Uae
Rising Market for Deutsche Babcock’s Know How & Technologies
According to a study in 2008 by the
World Wide Fund for Nature the UAE
had the world’s biggest per capita
carbon footprint. However, the
country since has invested heavily in improving
energy efficiency and Abu Dhabi is aiming to
develop into a global center of excellence for
renewable energy research, development and
innovation. MASDAR, a company which seeks
to become a leader in making renewable energy
a real, viable business is managing projects that
bring reductions in carbon emissions through
energy efficiency and waste heat/CO2 recovery,
as well as through Carbon Capture and Storage
(CCS). Carbon credit projects in the UAE range
from the oil and gas industry to power and water
producers.
Deutsche Babcock Middle East, a subsidiary
of the Bilfinger Berger Power Services, has been
contributing to this effort when it was awarded
the EPC contract for a Heat Re-claimer (HR)
at Emirates CMS Power in Taweelah A2. The
Taweelah A2 power and desalination plant is
a combined cycle cogeneration facility located
on the coast of the Arabian Gulf, about 70 km
northeast of the city of Abu Dhabi.
The project was successfully carried out by
Deutsche Babcock Middle East in October 2009
20 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
with the project objective to recover secondary
sensible waste heat from flue gases by installing
heat re-claimers in the flue gas path. The
recovered heat is transformed to low pressure
(LP) steam which is then used in Multi Flash
Distillers (MSF) to generate desalinated water.
As a result, approximately 96 t/hr of low pressure
steam is produced and replaces an equivalent
quantity of baseline low pressure steam.
The main advantages of the project are:
n reduction of thermal discharge to the
atmosphere
n efficient use of waste heat for steam
generation and desalination
n decreased CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel
combustion
In addition to these benefits, the project saves
about 120,000 t/year of carbon dioxide which
is equivalent to approximately 1,2 million USD
income per year from carbon credit trades.
This was the first Clean Development
Mechanism (CDM) project in a power and
desalination plant in the UAE.
The Heat Re-claimer Project at Taweelah
represents an innovative solution to increase
a plant’s efficiency and to reduce the
environmental footprint of power and water
production. This project has also fulfilled the
plant owner’s financial expectation of a short
amortisation time as well as environmental
expectations to reduce greenhouse emissions
and lastly the monetary incentive of traded
carbon credits.
The Kyoto Protocol gave greenhouse gases
a value, known as “carbon credits” where
each carbon credit is equivalent to one ton of
CO2. If the emission allowance is exceeded
it can be very costly for a nation. As per the
Kyoto protocol the opportunity to trade carbon
credits was created by the United Nations and
a legally binding document was signed where
countries committed to the efforts for reduction
of greenhouse gases.
The Heat Re-claimer (HR) is a natural
circulation steam generator with a boiler drum
on the top connecting to the heat exchanger
tubes. It is designed to be installed in an existing
Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) at a
location between the economiser and the stack
to extract a portion of the remaining heat in the
flue gas. The location is selected relative to a
flue gas temperature allowing for an economical
design of the heating surface. The heat energy
extracted from the flue gas can then be used
for different purposes according to the power
plant’s outline and demand.
This pilot project set an example for other
privatized Power Plants to act similarly for a
better environment and sustainable fuel usage.
“One of the benefits that the client gains
from this project is the reduction of fossil fuel
consumption that means less CO2 emission to
the atmosphere and a reduced thermal load
to the nearby surroundings” said Dr. Thomas
Suckut, CEO of Deutsche Babcock Middle East.
In summary a heat re-claimer project
entails the reduction of emissions through
the improvement of energy efficiency. The
heat reclaimer is a waste heat boiler and can
be implemented in any plant where the stack
temperature is around 160 deg C and above.
In the Middle East there are various projects
which have a great potential for certification to
sell carbon credits and the emission reduction
business could represent a market value worth
of hundreds of millions USD. n

As the world market leader in the field
of renewable energy, Germany offers a
good know-how transfer and a number
of German SME (Small and medium-sized)
companies are also actively participating in the UAE
market. In order to enhance this trend the German
Emirati Joint Council for Industry & Commerce (AHK),
hosted the “Renewable Energy Made in Germany
Symposium” in October 2011 under the auspices
of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and
Technology. The event took place at the Intercontinental
Hotel Abu Dhabi and was well attended by 150
participants from the private and government sector.
The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. Dalia Abu
Samra-Rohte, Director of the AHK Abu Dhabi, and
Mr. Frank Neumann, Deputy Head of Mission from
the German Embassy who held the welcome speech.
The symposium offered representatives of the
german Renewable Energy industry and individual
German companies involved primarily within the
field of solar energy, an ideal forum to introduce
themselves to local businesses and exchange ideas
and experiences.
During the first part of the symposium, industry
representatives from Germany and from Masdar
Power provided attendants with an insight into the
current status of renewables in Germany and the
UAE, as well as with perspectives for their future
development. Christof Schneider of the German
Renewables Academy (Renac) and Jürgen Knaack of
the German Solar Industry Association (BSW) delivered
an overview of the development that renewables have
had in Germany, and the political frameworks which
have been established to support the photovoltaic
market in particular. Werner Koldehoff also from the
BSW, further presented the current developments and
perspectives of renewable energies and stressed their
vital importance in terms of battling climate change
and finding solutions to current energy problems. Dr.
Olaf Göbel from Masdar Power provided the German
guests and other attendants with an overview of the
current energy strategies of Masdar Power.
In the second part of the symposium, German
companies specializing in the renewable energy sector,
26 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
were given the opportunity to present themselves and
their solutions and products to the attendants, as
well as address any arising questions. The companies
presented were Phocos AG, Mage Solar AG, Calyxo
GmbH, Industrial Solar GmbH, B+B Solarcleaning Ltd
and TST electronics GmbH. Mr. Hauser from GFA
Envest GmbH gave the audience an insight into the
financing possibilities of renewable energy projects
in the UAE and possible investment support from
Germany. Following the informative presentations
and the opportunities for addressing questions to
all presenters, the symposium came to a conclusion
with a joint networking event
The event took place within the framework of the
Export Initiative Renewable Energy program funded
by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and
Technology. Besides presenting at the symposium, the
delegation members had the chance to visit Masdar
City in order to learn more about the progress of
renewables in the UAE. Furthermore, the companies
were able to meet a variety of local businesses engaged
in the energy and renewables sector in Abu Dhabi
and Dubai.
As part of the program an extensive study on the
UAE renewable energy market was conducted, which
is available online or upon request. In 2012 as well
numerous activities are being planned for the cluster. n
The partnership has been signed by Engineer
Saed Al Awadi, Chief Executive Officer,
Dubai Exports, and Dr. Peter Goepfrich,
Chief Executive Officer, AHK. Through
this strategic partnership, both organisations aim
to enhance cooperation in promoting bilateral trade
for development of exports and investment relations
between Dubai, the UAE and Germany.
According to the Dubai Export Monitor, Dubai’s
total direct exports to Germany in 2010 amounted to
Dhs 369.15m while the total direct re-exports posted
Dhs 634.56m in the same year. Meanwhile, Dubai’s
total Free Zone exports were worth Dhs 818.04m.
“Germany and Dubai have a history of trade
and cooperation with a large number of German
companies already based here while some of our local
companies are doing business in the said country.
The Tradelink Partnership serves as a platform for us
to assist our members in exporting and enhancing
their presence in both markets,” said Al Awadi.
One of the objectives of the partnership is to
identify and implement projects and programmes
that will be beneficial to both Dubai Exports and
AHK. Under the Tradelink Agreement, they will
mutually seek research topics and information on
trade and exports encouraging their members to
expand in the two markets.
Goepfrich said that the Tradelink Partnership
acknowledges the commitment of both Dubai
Exports and AHK in making positive contributions
to the German and UAE economies. “Also part
The development of mutual training and temporary
activities in the partnership including sharing of best
was to create a unique networking platform outside
the hustle and bustle of daily working life, where
companies and their employees get a chance to
interact in a relaxed atmosphere – and it worked.
The 1st Dubai Companies Cup was kicked off
with the official opening ceremony after which 319
athletes and 35 teams from 26 companies geared
30 ISSUE 08 MAJLIS
up to take part in more than 400 challenges and
win the cup for their company!
The atmosphere was fantastic with fans loyally
supporting the athletes in the 6 different categories:
boot camp, swimming/ kayaking, beach volleyball,
rope pulling, slack line and kayak jousting.
This diverse selection of disciplines was a perfect
opportunity for the participants to demonstrate
their athletic talents as well as keeping
the spectators, which consisted of
their colleagues, families and friends,
entertained throughout the day.
The event was a perfect example
of how sports connect people in a
unique way with the sportsmanship
spirit on par with the competitiveness
bringing up a sense of camaraderie
among not only the athletes but also
2 nd ahK family day
On the 16th of March, 2012 the 2nd AHK Family Day took place. 200 AHK Members and Friends accepted
our invitation to spend a wonderful day on the beach of the Mina A’ Salam Hotel, overlooking the Burj Al
Arab. The prime location, delicious food offered by the Jumeirah Group and the entertainment for the kids
contributed to a very successful day. The kids spent their day out with Banana Boat riding, Kayaking and
Boogie Boards and the tiny tots busied themselves with the craft corner and bouncy castle. A lot of enthusiasm
and creativity was displayed at the sand castle competition, with many winners taking away prizes.
We would like to thank our Sponsors, Volkswagen Middle East, GAAST, Emirates and DAMAN for being
there and supporting the event.
The resonance was so positive that another AHK Family Day is being planned for later this year. n
Thank you all for coming.
The folk festival atmosphere, with traditional
German food and live music by the bands – “Lollypop”
from Germany and “Bezauer Dorfmusikanten” from
Austria - were welcomed with great cheer by the over
170 guests. The aim of the event was to bring the
local and German communities in Ras Al Khaimah
closer and the great turn out of local and German
guests was testament to its success. Numerous
representatives of local authorities and, in particular,
H.H. Sheikh Faisal bin Saqr Al Qassimi honored us
with their presence throughout the evening.
The success of the event was thanks to the
dedication and commitment of the members of the
AHK RAK Chapter and the generosity our sponsors:
Based on this tradition, the German Emirati
Joint Council for Industry and Commerce (AHK)
developed the new event format Arab-German
MAJLIS, which had its debut in 2011 at the
Bayerischer Hof in Munich.
The participants represented a top of the class
mix of business people from the United Arab
Emirates, Oman and Qatar, such as Dr. Khalid Al
Hajri (Qatar Solar Technologies), His Excellency Faraj
Ali Bin Hamoodah (Bin Hamoodah) and Mr. Hassan
Mohamed Hassan Humaid al Suwaidi (ADCO). We
also had the pleasure of welcoming representatives
of Al Amiri Int., Gulf Salt Company, Deutsche Bank
AG, Siemens LLC, Linde AG and BHF Bank.
Because of the great success of this pilot event, a
series of the 2 nd Arab-German MAJLIS events will take
place in the summer of 2012 in the cities of Berlin (June
27 th ), Munich (July 2 nd ) and Frankfurt (July 4 th or 5 th ).
This platform uses the already existing relationships
between Germany and the Gulf States and aims
to further strengthen and enhance sustainable
partnerships. The specific targeted match-making
between business people of both countries from
interesting sectors, current projects and business
opportunities supports this goal. Also, in order
to ensure an intensive exchange, the number of
participants is limited to 60 people.
ahK aDeMy
One of the German Emirati Joint Council for
Industry and Commerce (AHK) objectives is to provide
business skills and specialist business information
to its members. To achieve this AHK intends to
establish the AHKademy in Dubai, offering various
courses and seminars.
Our mission is to serve our members´ requirements;
hence special emphasis will be placed on business
skills such as:
• Developing marketing strategies in the GCC
• Preparing for successful participation at Trade Shows
• Leadership skills
• Intercultural Competence
• IT courses and much more
Another focus will be on the legal and commercial
aspects of conducting business in the UAE. A series
of seminars on topics such as Labour, Contract and
Company Law, Duties and Responsibilities of the HR
Beside this we also want to help expatriates make
a smooth transition to living in the UAE, through a
seminar ‘New in the UAE’ addressing all the day to
day issues people will face on arrival and as they
begin to integrate into UAE society. Highlighting
how the local laws and customs differ from Europe
and how these can impact on life in very tangible
ways, for example, are you familiar with Emirati
inheritance law which is based upon the sharia law
and how this can impact your life? Or how about
‘advance directives’ in the UAE? Do you understand
the rights of women in the UAE?
The AHKademy´s basic principles are sustainability
and quality. All seminars will be comprehensive
The selected speakers and guests will constitute
a balanced mixture of participants from the UAE,
Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar, as well as their
counterparts from Germany.
You have the opportunity to become a sponsor
of one of the events, which will include a lecture
by a key company representative and the inclusion
of your company’s logo in the 2nd Arab German
Business Village in Deira. However in order to serve
the best interests and needs of our members we
have the flexibility to develop and deliver custom
programmes and specialist training for members in
convenient locations.
AHKademy launched its services on March 5th
with the lecture “Development of Education in
trade Fairs
still going strong
Trade Fairs have existed, in various forms, for
about 1,000 years and are still one of the most
important marketing channels as they provide an
effective business platform for a specific business
sector or a whole industry. Depending on the type of
trade show, companies use them to create general
awareness, to launch new products or services, to
develop relationships with old clients and create
leads for new or potential clients, to find new sales
partners and distributors or to simply cultivate the
company’s image. From a visitor’s point of view,
trade fairs represent a temporary market place to
source for new products and technologies, to place
orders or to stay abreast of the industry trends.
Germany is known for its long tradition of
trade fairs and the experience of the German trade
fair organisers have allowed them to establish
leading international shows in almost each and
every industry sector, many of them the biggest
and most important worldwide.
The German-Emirati Joint Council for Industry
some of the most renowned German trade fair
for international buyers and toy traders. The 63rd
which took place from 1-6 Feb 2012, attracted over
