Dorfman Freelance Reporter A few minutes after the second of two performances of Field Middle School’s production of “The Little Mermaid,” Principal Erin Murphy was very pleased with what she had just seen. “I love it. It is the highlight of the year,” Murphy said of the annual show. “Seeing the kids involved in the art, but also the technical performance, we are seeing kids who do not always get involved.” What Murphy and the rest of the audience witnessed on Dec. 9 was the school’s adaptation of the underwater fantasy story involving Prince Eric, the evil Ursula and the central figure, Ariel. Approximately 60 of the school’s 300 children were involved in the onehour performance, either behind the scenes or in the cast. Field’s music director Case Carvell had experience with “The Little Mermaid” as he directed fifth-graders in the show at a neighboring school. With his experience and knowledge of the music and dialogue of “The Little Mermaid,” he sensed it would be a good fit at Field, as he embarked on directing his eighth show at Field, even as he had to navigate the challenge getting the costumes ready for the maritime adventure. “There are so many good parts in it and I knew there were so many talented kids,” Carvell said. “Collaborating with the other adults I felt this was a really good year for this Leah Hides, as Ariel, and Jet Kaneshiro, as Prince Eric, perform a scene. show because we had a lot of really good kids to fill for the parts.” The two shows of Dec. 8-9 culminated a process that began the first full week of school, Carvell said. In September, in front of Carvell and two other teachers, there were two days of open auditions where roughly 40 students stepped forward hoping to land a role. For the students that made it to the second round of auditions, Carvell said they were judged not only on their individual performances, but who played well off of whom. “A lot of it is role chemistry,” Carvell said. “There are multiple kids that are very talented and can play multiple parts so it seeing how they play across from one another during the callbacks and which combinations create the best chemistry.” After the second round of tryouts, Carvell and his associates selected eighthgrader Leah Hides for the role of Ariel. “I was really excited,” Hides recalled in the moments just after the second show wrapped. “I kept checking my email to see if I got it and I was so happy.” Selected to play the supporting character of Sebastian the Crab was eighthgrader Lee Mavrianos, who said he has now done three musical productions at the Field and enjoyed this one the most while acknowledging the red jacket he donned for the show was “bulky.” “It is really fun for me,” Mavrianos said. “I think I am going to continue to do it in high school and college.” Once all the parts were cast, Carvell said everyone had to practice as much as six hours of practice a week in rehearsals. He also placed audio files of their parts to sing on the music classes private Google classroom, so everyone could practice on their own.
