Paying the premium
Insurance and security, two different sides of
the home protection scenario....
In a move that will interest many domestic security systems
manufacturers and insurers, Cocoon, the sound detection
based home security system, has announced a deal with
PolicyCastle, a digital home insurance platform, giving people
buying home insurance through the service a 15% discount when
protecting their home with the connected security system.
This is indeed an interesting development as it is the first
time, that we’ve heard of, where a DIY security product is linked
to a reduction in insurance premiums. In the past insurers tended
to expect a basic level of security in the home before they would
agree cover (one report by GoCompare suggests that 4% of
people lie about having an alarm fitted) and many offer
reductions for further measures being in place and maintained.
Cocoon is a 120° HD camera with multi-room protection via
infrasound motion detection all supported by an app. Nothing
unique there, but the tie-in with the insurer is of note.
Sanjay Parekh, Cocoon CEO said: “The connected home has
gone through a technological evolution, having mostly failed to
deliver much real-world benefit to customers. Working together
with PolicyCastle and other insurance partners is just one way to
kickstart change in the home insurance industry and force larger,
established brands to improve their offerings to UK customers.”
Which may well be true in terms of making other insurance
companies think about offering some kind of reward for those
adding connected security devices in their homes. However it is
the comment from the insurer in this story that makes for closer
consideration as Edmund Dilger, PolicyCastle CEO said: “Smart
home devices have the opportunity to revolutionise the way we
maintain and protect our homes and we are delighted to support
customers who are using them.”
Now here’s my problem. The reason why insurers like to offer
you a policy at all and why they will even give out premium
reductions is that having a professionally installed security
system on the premises reduces the chance that you’ll become a
target in the first place. Insurers play the odds game; risk versus
reward. They know a burglar seeing an alarm system is less likely
to try his luck there than on a house that is unprotected. So
having a ‘listening’ camera in the front room won’t reduce the
chances of being a target, the insurer will still be getting calls.
The story is a nice bit of marketing for both parties, but I’d be
surprised if insurers welcomed any DIY indoor camera bought off
the internet as a reason for rewarding customers in the future.
Cocoon retails at £159 but there are much cheaper options out
there that offer lower level protection again. Perhaps
homeowners need to consider if it is savings they want, or
security.
INDUSTRY NEWS
OSS forms new partnership with
Muir Housing Association
Muir Group Housing Association, which
manages more than 5,500 homes across the
country, has formed a new partnership with
OpenView Security Solutions (OSS).
The contract sees OSS providing a range of
services including PAT testing, fire risk
assessments and the ongoing maintenance of
fire alarms, emergency lighting, door entry
systems, automatic doors and barriers. The
transfer of these services from the previous
contractor was efficiently achieved by both
organisations.
According to Mike Proudfoot, Maintenance
manager at Muir Group Housing Association:
“This partnership will be very important in
ensuring that we maintain our ongoing
commitment regarding the safety and security
of residents. As a landlord, OpenView’s
involvement will be crucial in helping us to meet
our obligations and the long-term benefits will
be positive, both for Muir residents and the
housing association as a whole.”
Andy Ward, Sales Director at OpenView
Security Solutions, added: “We are excited
about embarking on a new era with Muir Group
Housing Association. With experience of
working closely in partnership with housing
associations, we understand the importance of
ensuring that all equipment is working
efficiently at all times.”
In brief
CSL has announced its
acquisition of IQIP, the
European provider of IP
telecommunication services.
This deal follows the
acquisition of Emizon who
joined the CSL Group in April
2017. This news followed
the news that Eaton is the
latest CSL Connected
Partner.
CTSP applications top the 200
mark since launch
Tavcom Training has announced that the
Certified Technical Security Professional
Register (CTSP) has received over 200
applications to join the Register since
launching on 1st September 2017.
The CTSP Register has been endorsed in the
UK by the British Security Industry Association
(BSIA), the SSAIB, as well as internationally by
Dubai’s Security Industry Regulatory Agency
(SIRA). It represents an opportunity for
installers and those who maintain security/fire
systems, to be officially recognised for their
competencies and qualifications on a public
register.
CTSP Registrar, Kevin Matthew, states: “We
are delighted so many security professionals
have seized the opportunity to have their
qualifications, competency and experience
recognised on the CTSP Register. The industry
is now a step closer to raising professional
standards in the technical security sector,
however, our ultimate ambition is for every
practitioner to reach the CTSP standard and
take their place on the Professional Register.”
All applications are assessed by the
Registration Manager, to ensure only those
with the necessary credentials are admitted to
the Register. The core disciplines covered by
CTSP include: video surveillance systems
(CCTV), access control, intruder and hold up
alarms and fire alarm systems. The publicly
searchable Register lists Registrants and the
discipline they are qualified in, enabling end
users and employers to select a qualified
technical security professional.
CCTV ACCESS FIRE INTRUDER
Mike Cahalane
Tom Buffett
The security industry loses two
major influencers and innovators
At time of going to press, news reached the PSI
office of the death of two security industry
giants. Mike Cahalane and Tom Buffett will be
known to most in the sector with both having
achieved much and influenced many.
Mike Cahalane founded Shield Protection in
1965 which he sold to Honeywell in 1982. In
1972, he was a founder of both the Independent
Burglar Alarm Association (TIBAA) and the
National Supervisory Council for Intruder
Alarms (NSCIA) – which evolved into the
National Security Inspectorate (NSI).
Following spells as a director and general
manager with Honeywell Shield Protection and
Britannia Security Systems he practised as a
security consultant and in 1991 he became a
founder and director of the Association of
Security Consultants. In 1994, Mike also
became a director of the Security Systems and
Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB).
Tom Buffett became Chairman and Chief
Mayflex and Mobotix agree
exclusive distribution deal
Distributor Mayflex has secured an exclusive
sales agreement with Mobotix in the UK.
Mayflex has successfully distributed the
Mobotix video surveillance product set for over
ten years and has become an established
supplier of the brand to security installers.
Steve Proctor, Director of Sales – Security at
Mayflex comments: “This is fantastic news for
Mayflex. Exclusive distribution rights will allow
us to create closer ties with existing partners
and engage with new customers who may have
never dealt with Mayflex previously.
Steve Proctor of Mayflex with
Tonny Frederiksen from Mobotix
Executive of Automated Security Holdings (ASH)
in 1974, the holding company for Modern
Alarms. At that time Modern Alarms, later to
become Modern Security Systems, had ten
branches. With the extra funding that Tom
managed to bring into the business the
company was able to expand its branch network
and acquire organisations such as Brocks
Alarms, Maxim Alarms Security Centres, the
alarms division of Group4, Telecom Security and
Lander Alarms. By the end of the 90s the
company had a network of 24 branch offices
nationally and separate divisions encompassing
major systems, fire and CCTV.
In the early 80’s Tom formed Securitag as a
separate trading entity based on an expansive
UK designed clothing tag which he sold at the
end of the decade, along with subsidiary Cam-
Era CCTV to Sensormatic for £150 million.
Our condolences to all who knew them.
For more background on Mike and Tom plus a
number of tributes from friends and colleagues
see the PSI website.
“We will work with Mobotix to ensure the
market is kept up to date on product
developments and provide significant
education opportunities by delivering official
training courses via the Mayflex Academy and
James Vian, Training and Vendor Manager at
Mayflex. We are delighted to continue this
strong partnership and are looking forward to
growing our business to an even higher level
over the coming months.”
Tonny Frederiksen, Business Development
Director, Northern Europe of Mobotix
commented: “Over the last few months, we
have been reviewing our internal procedures,
go-to-market strategy and distribution
partners. As we continue to review our
processes we have concluded that a simpler
distribution strategy for the UK market will
deliver better results for us.
“Mayflex has been a strong, valued and
strategic distribution partner since 2005. Over
the years we have built a trustworthy
partnership which helped make the decision an
easy one for both companies to make. We have
both committed ourselves to invest further
efforts to develop the partner channel and
expand the visibility of Mobotix in the market.”
The UK’s fastest growing

security distributor
Research shows home burglary concerns
and security complacency
According to independent research commissioned by Verisure
Two-thirds (66%) of respondents who have already
experienced a home burglary fear they’re more at risk of a
repeat experience.
The research, which was carried out just before the
Christmas break 2017, found that seven in ten (70%) of the UK
population attribute the heightened threat of burglaries at
that time of year to stockpiles of gifts and other goods. A
further one in five (21%) feel that they are more exposed over
a festive period when they go on holiday, leaving their home
empty and vulnerable to intruders.
Yet despite the elevated risk of experiencing a burglary over
festive periods, many Brits aren’t taking basic, everyday
precautions with figures suggesting that:
• 73% don’t check their alarms work and are up-to-date
• 72% don’t ensure their gates are always closed
• 37% don’t ensure all doors and windows are locked before
leaving the house
• 49% don’t leave the lights on when they’re out of the
house (to give the appearance of being home)
• 77% leave boxes from presents they’ve bought in places
where people can find them (giving criminals an indication
of the sort of gifts they’ll find inside).
Peter Woolf, a rehabilitated former criminal, remarks,
“Frankly I’m concerned. Criminals are opportunistic by trade
and if they see a chance they’ll take it. I hate to say it, but if
they haven’t taken the time to secure their home and hide
their purchases, they will become a victim.”
The research suggests that many young adults are not
acting responsibly online. Even though one in five respondents
believe their home is at greater risk of a burglary over the
festive period because they’re more likely to be out, attending
parties and events, and 93% acknowledge that burglars could
be monitoring what they post on social media.
Despite the seasonal risks, many have delayed the
imperative of securing their home until the New Year. Just over
a quarter of this group (29%) blame a lack of time and 28%
say the modifications are too expensive to implement right
now: suggesting consumers are underestimating the far
greater burden of being burgled.
The research also points to a growing complacency among
people who have been burgled in the past. Just 22% ensure
they put their alarm on every time they leave the house and
80% still leave possessions in places that would be visible
from the outside.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks looks through
the most memorable quotes from the
Bottom Line interviews of the last 12
months.
The Internet of Things is expected to be a future major market, which could
be a target for security companies given the overlap with areas such as
home cinema, automation, biometrics, cameras and big data analytics.
Philip Carse, Principal Analyst at Megabuyte.
We ensure that we always install the correct system and one which is right
for our customer. If the wrong grade is installed and something goes wrong,
the Alarm Company may be liable as the Risk Assessor.
Dave McKay, Managing Director of AFA Fire and Security Ltd.
The growth of our signalling estate has been fundamental to our success. I
have focussed on expanding our recurring revenue contract base due to the
value they offer compared to one-off high risk project revenues.
Nigel Jackson, Managing Director of Swift Fire & Security and Director
of Marlowe PLC.
It’s important for the business to continue to support and grow talent to
ensure a pipeline of future engineers for the Industry. We strongly believe
you must invest in young people and help guide them in their careers.
Lucie Banham, Director of The Banham Group.
The highest standards only work if the whole site is managed well. Hatton
Garden could have been avoided through stricter operational procedures and
installation of the highest levels of security available.
Graeme Dow, Director of Safeguard Security Consultants.
When used appropriately IoT provides additional benefits to high security
systems and greater flexibility and functionality for the lesser secure
systems. We strongly believe in the benefits of IoT, especially Apps for CCTV,
and feel this is a growing area that will benefit us all.
Stephen Leigh, Sales Director of Argus Fire & Security Ltd.
NPCC Policy has set a date of 2020 for all calls to be passed electronically.
This would result in an average time saving of 120 seconds per call. Other
benefits include the elimination of human error which has been an issue in
the past, with Hatton Garden being the most notable example!
David Mair, Metropolitan Police – Manager Security Systems Unit and
NPCC Security Systems Group Technical Representative.
We see a lot of alarm system Apps and interfaces that offer the user basic
functionality. Systems that use logic and gather feedback to tailor services to
an individual’s needs are where we need to be for full automation and
convergence.
Tim Northwood, General Manager at Inner Range Europe Limited.
The technology and services that come with IoT will make it so much easier
to understand your business’ Key Performance Indicators. By analysing the
data in a smart way you can improve efficiency, start offering better services
and increase your customer satisfaction.
Rami Avidan, Managing Director of Tele2 IoT (Internet of Things).
New technology is great, whether it is drones searching for missing people or
body worn cameras deflecting potential violent situations. Nonetheless
regulators and law makers need to keep abreast of the risks. Transparency is
the ticket to its acceptance by the public.
Tony Porter, the UK’s Surveillance Camera Commissioner and
independent Government regulator.
The gaps between physical systems and non-physical security teams is one
that is very easily exploited by criminals but with some quality
communications is one of the most straightforward to start rectifying.
Mike Gillespie, Founder of Advent IM Ltd.
1234
Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available
on the market today.
Installers will have the option of Enhanced Password Control (EPC). This will prohibit the use of ‘1234’ and other
easily infiltrated passwords and only allow the use of passwords upon selection, the EPC will remove any
backdoor user capability and will disable P2P and DDNS options by default.
Videcon understand that certain installations will not require such a high level of security; therefore, EPC is purely
optional. Compatibility to organisations requiring a stringent level of password protection is essential and it is this
compatibility that undoubtedly makes the Concept Pro recording devices the most secure in the market
suitable for use in government, public space and banks to name but a few.
Enhanced Password Control, easy interoperability and the potential for use in a varying array of situations
ensure that Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available on the market today.
Secure Eurpean Servers & P2P
P2P networking makes it simple for installers to configure mobile viewing of the Concept Pro
Recorders on smartphones and tablets. Installers simply activate mobile viewing by
scanning the QR code on the unit into the Concept Pro app (available for Android and iOS
devices free of charge) connecting through the server straight to the NVR.
system or browser linked from a PC. Remote
applications for PC, Android and iOS are available
for download. The unit supports up to 16 camera
streams with no additional licences required.
Getting started
The front cover unclips from the left-hand side to
reveal the drive bay. Carriers are provided for
eight SATA 3.5” disc drives. An installation sheet
shows the assembly process and advises to use
surveillance rated drives. For the initial testing a
single 1TB drive was installed. then with the
power supply, mouse, network point and HDMI
monitor connected the front panel power switch
starts the unit.
As the unit is directly connected to its HDMI
monitor, there is no need to find it on the network,
the network settings can be accessed through the
menu system or by way of the Setup Wizard and
changed to suit or switched to DHCP for
simplicity.
On the front panel 2 x USB 2 sockets are
available for the mouse and for memory devices
for export. Select and Unlock switches at the top
right are used to unmount a selected hard drive
from the system. The drives are hot-swappable
but must be unmounted before removal to protect
their data. The drives do not have to be of the
same make or size. No information was given on
how drives would be spanned but as there is no
requirement to allocate cameras to a specific
drive letter it is assumed that recordings are
allocated in sequence to available discs; test time
did not allow for such duration observation. There
is mention of energy-saving technology so it is
possible that non-accessed drives are temporarily
powered down. No internal RAID formatting is
possible but external storage configurations
could be added if required. A series of front panel
LEDs indicates the status of system activity and
individual drive operation.
The rear panel has the power in (19v DC at
3.42A), Relay Output (N.O.) VGA, Composite
(BNC), Microphone in & Audio out (Phono), HDMI
1, HDMI 2, USB 3, WAN (RJ45) and LAN (RJ45). The
VGA and composite follow the Main HDMI 1
output with the HDMI 2 being available for Spot
or alarm monitor functionality.
The two network ports are both 1Gb/s rated
and are intended for LAN to be used for local
camera connections and the WAN connection for a
router link to the outside world.
When the unit is powered, it was found to turn
on after about 10 seconds and after showing an
H.265 Splash screen proceeds to play a promo
video of AVTech products. The whole start-up
routine takes around 3 minutes and there appears
to be no way to prevent the video playing.
After the power-up sequence the system gives
the installer a Wizard set-up option that can be
skipped in favour of manual settings. The Power
button does not allow the unit to be powered
down; this is only possible from the Power Control
menu option.
An IP Scan programme is available from the
download site but this only scans the local subnet
of the PC. It does however allow IP changes and
firmware upgrades to be made to AVTech
cameras.
A 3” fan in the rear of the housing draws air
across the drives and out of the rear vents; this
did not sound to be running as smoothly as
expected so unless this was a one-off failure, may
require replacing with an improved version.
The NVR menu presents a simple screen layout
consisting of a 16-way multiple image grid.
Clicking the right mouse button brings up the tool
bar and a function panel. These allow changes to
the screen display format and access to replay
and device status information.
Operation
The NVR operates well as a stand-alone device
connected directly to its monitor but for better
security can be locked away and accessed via a
PC. The PC browser interface gives a very similar
look and feel to the direct connection. The
TEST
This NVR is a
relatively simple to
install, multi-disc
recorder with a good
user interface and
simple operation
NOTE: This PSI Product Test
was carried out by an
independent third party,
not editorial staff. The
manufacturer had no input in
the review or the final result
8.5 out of 10
(continued from p14)
documentation only recommends Microsoft IE
which worked well; no images could be viewed
using Edge, Chrome or Firefox browsers on a
Windows 10 machine.
The printed manual supplied with the unit gave
most necessary information but it was strange
that this was not included in electronic format on
the CD. There was also no access to the user
manual from the main AVTech website although
the manual did give a web address for a pdf copy
of the manual along with a download for the CMS
Lite PC programme for alternative monitoring of
the system. CMS Lite is also available from the
supplied CD as a “.rar” file. This software is
AVTech’s free VMS for up to 24 camera systems.
The first screen icon for each of the camera
display panes allows the camera to be
disconnected from the system with “all
parameters” lost. Although there is a warning
prompt, it would be easy for a casual or malicious
user to create problems so care must be taken to
allocate access rights to users of the system.
There is no forcing of strong passwords for the
system and network security features are very
limited so it would be essential to provide
suitable firewall protection if connected to the
internet for remote access.
The HDMI 1 output supports up to 3840 x 2160
(4K) pixel resolution, HDMI 2 and VGA are up to
1920 x 1080 (HD).
Some unintentional double-entry of characters
was noted when entering the password using the
on-screen keyboard, but this error was removed
by reducing the mouse sensitivity.
Some of the functionality is naturally geared
towards AVTech cameras but the general
performance with ONVIF compliant cameras was
good. Applications are available for both Android
and iOS devices in free and enhanced versions.
The free version is shown to be limited to just four
cameras while the paid version covers the full 16
channels. These apps worked well for basic image
viewing and replay of recordings. Push video is
supported. An “EaZy” networking option using QR
Code access for setup, provides simplicity of
remote connectivity but there is mention of a
different level of bandwidth being available after
a trial period and promotion of chargeable
bandwidth limits and “Cloud” storage facilities so
this needs to be carefully considered before
utilisation.
Performance
The user interface is easy to navigate around and
the image quality is very good, depending of
course on the camera quality and set-up. The
flexible screen layouts and ease of setting to full
screen display mode will be particularly useful for
small systems requiring an overview or customer
display.
Playback was very versatile with a simple but
useful Timeline beneath the image pane that
could be set to a resolution of Hours, Minutes or
Seconds. This timeline scrolled very smoothly
allowing for quick searching through large
amounts of video and then switching to minutes
and seconds allowed precise selection of
recordings of interest.
The video transport controls are relatively
standard with good flyover text that was notably
absent from most other functions. Fast Forward
and Rewind both operate at 4, 8, 16 and 32 times
normal and a Slow speed operates at 1/4 or 1/8
normal. Together with the smooth Timeline this
makes scene or still frame finding
straightforward. The screen display format will
scale the number of panes shown to best match
the number of cameras selected for replay.
Triggered events are indicated on the timeline
and in an event list and can be used to simplify
the selection of events for playback. When
selected from the list, the basic event opens in a
small replay window for review and this miniplayer
also allows the clip to be opened in the full
playback window.
For export, the start and end times are entered
directly or via a slider and then can be exported to
a connected USB device. Exported files are in avi
format so will play with the majority of standard
video players.
In addition to the event list the right-hand
panel also provides some useful performance
information such as LAN and WAN up and
download data usage and camera details
including, IP Address & Port, Compression, Pixel
Count, Images per second and Data rate for each
of the sixteen channels.
The third item on the right-hand panel is a PTZ
control group. This allows compatible cameras to
be functionally controlled, sent to pre-set
positions or instructed to run tours.
The Eagle Eyes app installed simply on both
Android and iOS devices and gave reasonable
results.
Conclusion
This NVR is a relatively simple to install, multidisc
recorder with a good user interface and
simple operation. While it doesn’t have the
extensive network or security features of some
offering, it does fulfil the need for a cost-effective
long-term storage NVR with good event handling
and image replay controls. A large amount of
flexibility can be built in to an installation if care is
taken to fully understand the configuration
process.
Quick Installation Guide
Cameras can be
and are selected
from an impressive
range of
manufacturers and
models or using a
generic ONVIF profile
This recorder is based on a NAS style box that
can accept one or two hard drives of up to
10TB capacity. This storage can be increased
by the addition of an external expansion drive
unit. Before operation, software must first be
loaded from a supplied USB memory stick or the
Synology website.
The NVR was supplied with no hard drive fitted
and documentation limited to a pictorial Quick
Installation Guide that covers how to fit a drive
and the supplied memory device. While additional
documentation was available on the company’s
website this did not include an operating manual,
just an installation manual. The PC viewing
software was found to include a useful help file
but this feature was not available on the device’s
output display.
The NVR is given a default four camera licence
and this can be increased to a maximum of
twelve. Using H.264 the device’s bandwidth can
support up to twelve cameras at 720p at 30fps.
This drops to ten cameras at 1080p at 10fps, then
6 x 3MP cameras or 4 x 5MP cameras, both also at
10fps. Power is fed from an external 12v 5A in-line
power supply.
Getting started
First a suitable drive must be fitted, a list of
compatible drives is given on the supplier’s
website with guidance on suitability of drive types
with recommendations for Surveillance or
Enterprise drives designed for 24-hour write
cycles and vibration tolerance. A small extra
bracket is provided in case of drives with only four
mounting holes not six. Next the installation
‘Dongle’ and a mouse are inserted into the
identified USB sockets. One USB 3 port is
available and is recommended for the installation
dongle and two additional USB 2 ports are
available for a mouse (not supplied) and other
devices. Next the network lead and a connection
to an HDMI monitor should be made and then the
power supply can be connected.
All components are mounted on a main board
with a removeable sub-board providing the two
SATA drive connectors. For the testing, a 1TB drive
was installed.
A large 3” fan draws air through the case and
out through the rear panel. The system reported
an operating temperature of 34°C which matched
the observed temperature of the majority of
components being below 35°C after a number of
hours operation.
Software
The NVR has no firmware loaded when supplied
but the installation process from the supplied
memory stick is relatively quick and trouble free.
PC software is available in the form of
Surveillance Station but this must be downloaded
from the Synology website. This presents a
similar desktop window and allows recordings to
be downloaded to the PC.
An additional icon on the toolbar line brings up
the full set of icons for available functionality. Any
of these additional Icons can be added to the
main desktop. It was noted that only the PC
software included a Help icon. This provided a
useful guide to operation that was not apparently
available anywhere on the unit itself or through
the supplier’s website. As these help files consist
of a range of HTML format documents accessible
on the PC in the programme’s installation folder it
would be possible to print out any that were
deemed useful for training purposes or to
introduce into site specific user manuals.
Operation
The NVR can be operated as a stand-alone device
using a mouse and the HDMI monitor output. The
IP Camera option is used for entering new
cameras onto the system. It was observed that
the desktop display had a distinctly pink hue until
cameras were added at which point the desktop
took on a more normal white banner and window
display colour, however this was not observed
with a later re-installation of firmware. Cameras
can be individually or batch entered and edited
and are selected from an impressive range of
manufacturers and models or using a generic
ONVIF profile. The manufacturer specific settings
allowed some very old IP cameras to be entered
for recorder testing that would normally not be
compatible with modern NVRs.
While the desktop format is based on a Linux
Graphical User style, it is relatively easy for users
accustomed to Microsoft Windows to navigate.
With cameras entered onto the system, the
Live View icon brings up a Live image screen
showing connected cameras. By default, this
shows 1 or more cameras depending on the
current connection but alternative layouts can be
freely added up to a 10 x 10 array for larger
installations. A preferred layout can then be set as
the new default.
Timeline is used to review camera footage.
8.5 out of 10
This display window shows one or more cameras
depending on selected layout and can display
cameras synchronised in time or individually. A
calendar display allows selection of the day to
replay images from and a vertical timeline gives a
24-hour period with a slider that can be dragged
to a required time. This timeline can be zoomed in
to show just 12, 8, 4, 2 or a single hour. Alerts
such as motion detected events are highlighted
on the timeline by coloured bands. A ‘Go To’
button allows the user to access an exact time.
IP Camera is for camera entry and editing of
set-up. Oddly the default maximum storage
setting for each camera is just 10GB which for
Megapixel cameras with low frame rates gave just
over 5 hours of recordings. This can be changed or
the option simply unticked to use the maximum
available storage. Clearly this could be a useful
feature to appropriately allocate storage space to
the highest priority cameras. Recording clip
duration can also be set within this option as a
Truncate command with a range from 2 to 240
minutes in 10 steps; the default is 30 minutes.
Recording duration can be set individually for
each camera in days or left to share available
space.
Recording displays the recorded files as a list
from the most recent recordings going back over a
number of pages. This also shows confirmation
that data is being written to the current files.
System gives access to the NVRs information
page, then alternative tabs for Storage, Network,
Time, Video and Firmware Upgrade.
As stated above, rather than a main window
with a menu structure covering all of the NVR
functions, this device has individual applications
for camera configuration, system information and
image replay. Browsing to the unit’s IP address
gives access to the device’s NAS software named
Disk Station Manager (DSM) which gives access
to the full functionality of the unit for Home or
Business NAS storage rather than just CCTV and
provides tools for file management with extended
range of add-on applications that can be
downloaded, some of which are chargeable;
though only in US$.
Performance
Playback of images is performed through the
Timeline window; this does not have conventional
video transport controls for reviewing the video
but provides a set of individual controls
depending on the mode of operation. Playback
speed can be adjusted to 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, or 8
times but there is no reverse play option so if
looking for a specific image for still presentation it
is necessary to continually move back to a prior
time and retry. When in Pause mode you can
navigate with Previous and Next frame functions
but it was found that when using an MPEG
camera, the function worked well for frame
advance but the previous frame command
continually jumped back between 12 and 22
frames at a time.
The Smart Search feature is relatively
straightforward to set up and gave good results.
The feature runs through the specified timeline
and identifies activity within a user defined area.
It can detect Motion, Missing Object, Foreign
Object, Camera Occlusion, No-Idle Zone or Focus
Lost. Each detection event creates a thumbnail of
a video clip that can then be replayed and
exported if required. The search runs through at
up to 100 times normal speed but this reduces if a
large amount of detection takes place. Each clip
has a Pre and Post alarm section that was thought
to be pre-defined but in practice tended to be
longer than the entered value.
Recordings are exported in mp4 format and are
compatible with standard video players such as
Media Player, QuickTime and VLC. An
Authentication App is available for download to
confirm consistency with the original recording
and provide the source device details.
Some Access control functionality has been
added based on an Axis door controller.
A mobile app (DS Cam) is available for iOS and
Android devices. This had limited functionality
beyond receiving push alerts, viewing live images
and simple replay of recordings. The iOS version
gave reasonable live image updates from MPEG
sources but gave no image from an H.264
connected camera although the recordings from
this camera could be replayed. The Android
version showed H.264 live images but only after a
long delay. Replay of recordings was from the
source files and the only controls were for
Pause/Play and Next or Previous image file.
Conclusion
While the documentation was felt to be lacking,
some of the features available are very good
especially the wide range of legacy cameras that
can be recorded. The lack of a conventional set of
video transport controls was disappointing
however with time one could achieve satisfactory
results. In essence this is a NAS storage device
that has had camera recording and playback
management software added and while this may
give flexibility in terms of network monitoring and
file stability it must be considered against a
dedicated NVR that may provide better video
bandwidth and replay control.
Multi-purpose outdoor PIR
detectors launched
Optex has launched the BX Shield (BXS) series
which includes four PIRs, two on each side, and the
detection range and sensitivity can be adjusted
independently for each side of the sensor; the
detection area can be easily set up to 12m/40ft
(24m/80ft in total).
The sensor comes in two standard colours: a
black body and white front face plate, or white body
and white face plate. Black and silver plates are also
available.
The BX Shield has four models: two standard,
hardwired PIRs (BXS-ST) and two hardwired models
with anti-masking (BXS-AM). There are also two
battery-powered models, standard (BXS-R), and
antimasking (BXS-RAM).
All are equipped with digitally-enhanced signal
recognition logic known as Super Multidimensional
Analysis (SMDA). By analysing detection patterns
and environmental information, SMDA improves
immunity against changes in temperature or moving
trees and vegetation, and can distinguish between
the cause of nuisance false alarms and genuine
intrusions.
For environments where the temperature
difference between the human body and the
background is very small, the extreme high
detection mode increases the PIR sensitivity to
prevent any missed alarms.
The BX Shield includes a tamper output that is
activated when the face cover or back box is
removed. For ease of installation, the BXS has a
walk test mode to ensure the beam field is set up
correctly.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss
new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day
activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our
attention so here we take a look at some of the products we
think you won’t want to miss this month.
Two new intruder products
launched at once
New monitoring platform designed to cut false alarms
Calipsa has announced a new monitoring platform
designed to provide real-time analytics to alarm receiving
centres (ARCs) and help reduce the number of false
security alarms every year. The platform is built on ‘Deep
Learning’ models by machine learning and artificial
intelligence experts.
Calipsa’s integrated alarm receiving solution applies software to
intercept false alarms, confirming their legitimacy and passing only
genuine alarms to operators at the monitoring station.
Customers benefit from analytics developed using algorithms that
can quickly process and analyse video feeds to detect humans, vehicles
or animals at the scene, then filter out false alarms and detect real
alarms –all in real time. Staff members are thus able to concentrate on
legitimate alarms, and reduce the risk of missed incidents.
Designed to work with any existing IP camera or video source, the
technology can be deployed via the cloud with no upfront investment.
INTERVIEW
Developing next door!
Paxton has opened a new centre for technology and innovation alongside
its current Brighton Head Office. PSI took a trip to the new premises and
met up with Adam Stroud, Paxton’s Group Chief Executive
Adam Stroud, Paxton’s Group
Chief Executive
“We love being based
in Brighton and for
over 30 years we have
been proud of our
Sussex roots, having
first established the
business in Lewes
before moving to
Brighton in 2004”
he 29,000-sq. ft. Paxton Technology Centre
Tis now home to the company’s product
Research and Development departments
and also houses the company’s new training
suite, which will host their free, installer training
sessions. This includes a hospitality area
offering a relaxed breakout space for installers
to relax and enjoy their lunch and
complimentary refreshments. It also offers a
fully connected space enabling them to work
there if required.
The whole building has been designed to
create a dynamic and collaborative working
environment and the open plan working space
creates the perfect setting to support hundreds
of decisions being made every day, to progress
the company in the future.
Speaking at the opening of the centre Adam
Stroud said: “We are delighted with our new
facility and feel it’s a real statement of intent
showing the direction the company is moving.
It’s far from an ordinary working space and
that’s because Paxton’s growth journey is also
far from ordinary. The investment we continue to
make into product research and development,
enables us to continue to drive innovation
within the global security market.
"The Paxton Technology Centre (PTC) is so
much more than just a new building for Paxton.
It is the physical embodiment of all our hard
work, and a symbol of the company’s continued
growth and success.”
PSI sat down with Adam to discuss the new
building in more depth and to find out what he
thinks the future has in store for the company
and the access control sector:
What were the main drivers for the
expansion?
We have enjoyed rapid growth and so we
required more space to grow the company to
increase headcount and help us develop,
manufacture, sell and support new products.
Another key driver was to ensure that we can
continue to attract the brightest and the best to
work for us. Recruiting the best talent into a
company is a competition and our new facility
allows us to offer a world-class working space
which we hope will also motivate our current
staff to fulfil their potential.
Why was it important to stay in Brighton?
We love being based in Brighton and for over 30
years we have been proud of our Sussex roots,
having first established the business in Lewes
before moving to Brighton in 2004. We have
invested in the city and our staff that work with
us and a large-scale relocation project would
have been costly as well as a disruption to staff.
Brighton is a fun and vibrant place to work
plus we are lucky to be ideally situated close to
two fantastic universities. Many of the students
that graduate from these universities have a
choice to make when deciding on where to seek
employment. Some might feel that they must
return to their home towns or to other large cities
in order to continue their careers. We want to
capture this talent, encourage them to stay in
Brighton and further their careers here at Paxton.
We are aiming to become one of the UK’s
best companies to work for and having a
dynamic, collaborative working environment
plus great company culture will hopefully help
us to achieve our aim.
What will be the benefits of the new
premises for visiting installers?
The Paxton Technology Centre now houses our
brand-new installer training suite. A key part of
our business strategy is to provide free, handson
training to our installers.
Investment into this area at the PTC, reflects
our investment into training of our customer
base. We provide training across our full product
range and when we were designing the PTC we
thought hard about the installer experience to
create an area that would work for them. We
understand that our installers are taking time
out of their day to undertake training here so
our new training suite offers installers a
breakout space where they can work between
sessions, have lunch, relax with a coffee etc.
Has the growth in DIY IoT access control
systems had any impact on Paxton?
The main players within the home automation
market have certainly been driving public
awareness of the benefits of automation such as
smart heating, smart lighting, voice control etc.
This is in turn leading to a drive for similar
systems within the corporate market.
The ongoing uptake of home automation is
bringing about a real technical change in our
industry through the greater use of connected
IoT devices.
Will GDPR effect access control system
use in the future?
The new regulations that cover data protection
will certainly have an impact on the access
control industry.
We are working to ensure that all the
required actions and activities are completed to
bring about our GDPR compliance both from a
security and legal perspective by 25th May
2018. Our access control products will also
include the features necessary for our
customers to work towards them achieving
compliance.
Has cyber security increasingly figured in
your R&D in recent times?
We take the security of our systems very
seriously and are constantly developing our
software to ensure our systems are up to date
and secure. We issue software updates
regularly and encourage our installers to ensure
their customers are running the most up to date
versions of software.
As access control systems are being
increasingly used remotely, we ensure that we
adopt the most appropriate secure technology.
What types of training subjects do you
envisage covering in 2018?
By the end of this year, we would have trained
approx. 7,000 individuals from over 3,000
companies globally. We will continue to offer
training across our full product range and this
will continue even as we diversify our product
range in 2018.
Training and educating the installer base on
our products is key, therefore it is imperative
that wherever our training takes place, the
quality, quantity and direction are consistent for
us to be recognised as a truly global company.
“We understand that our installers are taking time out of
their day to undertake training here so our new training suite
offers installers a breakout space where they can work
between sessions, have lunch, relax with a coffee etc”
PANEL
“If we end up with a
hard Brexit, I predict
we’ll see a number of
UK manufacturers,
including those in the
security industry,
open sales offices and
other subsidiaries
within the EU to avoid
difficulties with tariffs
and borders”
24
Forward thinking
What will be the major talking
points of 2018 be for the security
industry? What will we have
experience by this time next year?
The PSI Panel wheels out the
crystal ball...
t this time of year we’re all thinking about
Athe twelve months ahead with hopes of
success and prosperity, but what are the
most likely scenarios for 2018? We asked a
selection of industry experts to give us their
predictions for the next year.
Clym Brown - Texecom
In the intruder alarm market, I
expect to see the continued
proliferation of added-value
‘connected’ services to
professional intruder alarms
systems.
Along with the intruder alarm system,
security installers can offer a more immersive
experience for the customer, allowing them to
take control of the system along with other
peripherals such as video, lighting, power
management and smart control of appliances.
New user experiences will seek to provide an
environment where end users actively want to
interact with their home or business, enjoy the
new possibilities that are open to them, and
deliver the piece of mind that comes with
knowledge and control.
Security installers will want to ensure that
smart functionality can be added to increase the
value of the system, and does not impact on, nor
compromise, the performance of the graded
professional intruder alarm systems. All
additional functionality – which enables
interoperability with security, lighting, heating
and power management – should be managed
by the security system, ensuring that there is no
risk of secondary tasks adversely affecting the
system’s performance.
For commercial intruder alarm systems, I see
an increasing appetite for ‘best of breed’ system
integrations that offer smarter solutions. Cloudbased
interconnectivity will begin to replace
hardware-level system integrations, resulting in
the combination of intruder alarms, CCTV,
access control and VMS-based systems offering
added intelligence and increasing value to
building owners.
Stephen D Green -
Gourdiehill
Associates
To answer this question this
year requires far more than a
crystal ball, as the major topic
of conversation will continue
to be the unprecedented levels of global
uncertainty which appear likely to persist. How
any businessman is able, in all good faith, to
produce a meaningful forecast in the face of
such rapid geopolitical and legislative turmoil as
we are witnessing is beyond me.
For example, next May will see
implementation of the European General Data
Protection Regulation, with far-reaching data
management consequences for those
companies operating across European Union
borders. And yet we are unable currently to say
with any certainty which elements of this will
apply post-Brexit, nor envisage how the UK
Security Industry will be affected once it finds
itself outside those same borders. Of late, talk
of future regulatory alignment with the EU has
been seen to both sooth and infuriate,
depending on your political bent.
The coming year will also doubtless bring
www.psimagazine.co.uk

significant security-related concerns. The
familiar world order appears to be being
rewritten, often in 140 characters or less. A
dramatic and seemingly relentless global
upsurge in terrorist activity has coincided with
deteriorating political situations across much of
the Middle East and Asia. 2018 will begin in
similar vein, with western societies braced for
fallout from the US recognition of Jerusalem as
the capital of Israel, but amid apparent tension
between Five Eyes members and vagueness over
future interactions between this group and EU
counter-terror organisations.
“But every cloud….”as some cynics might
say. So-called “entrepreneurs” amongst us will
no doubt be regarding such chaos with glee,
whilst reciting the archaic misquotation that
“crisis and opportunity are the same word in
Chinese”. They’re not, and in this festive season
it seems unconscionable to view growing social
fragmentation as just a P&L account entry.
Laurence Kenny -
Pyronix
As we move forward into 2018
there will be a continued
development of home
automation integration within
security systems. We have
already seen a mass shift of
security to lifestyle function, as we continue to
distance ourselves from the traditional grudge
purchase. This is a trend that will continue.
Security devices and solutions will remain
the priority, but along with security, there will be
more automation devices developed into
ranges. This will provide installers with more
options and more selling points to remain
competitive with converging markets, while
providing end users with more functionality. It is
this added value that has begun to lift the
grudge purchase reputation.
An example of this is how in some countries,
TELCOs and insurance providers are making
significant steps to get a piece of the IoT pie.
With increasing customer churn in these
sectors, they are starting to provide connected
devices as a way of retaining customers with
added value service offerings, alongside their
traditional product lines.
Another expectation for 2018 will be the
development of voice.
Looking at converging markets, we see voice
controls are widespread, from smartphones to
www.psimagazine.co.uk
smart speakers; voice is the latest evolution of
the user interface. Following keypads and
touchscreens, voice is now being used as an
effective way to control automation, ask general
knowledge questions, set up calendars, set up
reminders or even text or call people.
It is a natural step that security will follow
and this will become the next interface for
security solutions. However, with the
opportunities this presents, there are several
considerations that we can expect to be worked
through. This will primarily be standards, as
they will need to be formulated so that voice is
integrated appropriately and effectively, with
the highest regard for the integrity of security.
Tim Northwood -
Inner Range Europe
As the ‘internet of things’
gathers more momentum and
it becomes generally accepted
to access your security system
remotely, we’ll see
manufacturers producing
more cloud-based connectivity and monitoring.
Going hand in hand with this will be a lot more
encryption and firewalling too, as manufacturers
ensure systems can’t be hacked.
The rise and rise of the internet is also likely
to make the old PSTN phone lines pretty much
(continued over)
“We have already
seen a mass shift of
security to lifestyle
function as we
continue to distance
ourselves from the
traditional grudge
purchase. This is a
trend that will
continue”
PANEL
“Everything is and will
be overshadowed by
the issues raised from
the Grenfell Tower
tragedy and the
reports and decisions
coming from the
Technical and
Building Regulations
reviews currently
being undertaken”
(from previous page)
obsolete within our industry. Multipath options
for signaling and transmission that use internet
access and/or 3/4/5G across different mobile
providers will become standard.
The forthcoming new rules on GDPR mean
we’ll all be taking a closer look at how we
protect personal data in 2018 but the bigger
issue for the sector is Brexit. If we end up with a
hard Brexit, I predict we’ll see a number of UK
manufacturers, including those in the security
industry, open sales offices and other
subsidiaries within the EU to avoid difficulties
with tariffs and borders. It’s certainly something
we’ll be considering.
Stephen Adams -
BAFE
For the UK fire industry the
talking points for 2018 will be
very obvious, but nonetheless
very complicated with huge
implications for the industry,
our customers and the general public.
Everything is and will be overshadowed by
the issues raised from the Grenfell Tower
tragedy and the reports and decisions coming
from the Technical and Building Regulations
reviews currently being undertaken. It would be
foolish to try and predict the outcomes, but I
think it almost certain that there will be
significant statements about additional
requirements for product integrity and the
competency of risk assessors, installers and
maintenance organisations.
From the detailed and carefully thought out
responses that have been submitted to the
Building Regulations review, it is clear that
many of the responsible bodies within the fire
industry have constructive suggestions.
Converting these into practical regulation is,
however, a much more difficult task. From
BAFE’s perspective, the call for third party
certification of competence is long overdue,
especially at the early stage of every fire
protection work – the Fire Risk Assessment.
In other areas, there will be more work done
to reduce the number of false alarms from fire
detection systems. The introduction of a revised
policy from the National Fire Chiefs’ Council
working with the industry must help to reduce
FAs and improve response to genuine alarm
calls, together with initiatives to digitally
facilitate alarm calls to the emergency services.
Finally there needs to be continued efforts to
improve the skills and competence of
technicians within the whole industry. The best
products are worth nothing if installed and
maintained by poorly trained staff. The excellent
apprenticeship scheme developments should be
strengthened and promoted, together with
moves to train staff and monitor all
competencies as part of the third party
certification regime.
David Davies - DVS
2018 is set to be the year
where we see a big emergence
of AI (artificial intelligence).
With cutting edge solutions
just being released now for
facial recognition, advanced
analytics for thermal imaging and perimeter
protection, false alarm management and ANPR
products.
AI is likely to push the boundaries of what we
perceive CCTV for and almost making the image
secondary to the data it can provide or
intelligently manage. With everything to the
NVRS, cameras, Hard drives and even Switches
looking to implement this in some way, it looks
set to be a very interesting 2018 and beyond.
I really think in the next 12-24 months, we
will see Facial recognition technology being
almost used by default and as the technology
adapts and grows, it will therefore reduce in
price and become very attractive to the retail
sector. Including other applications like
licensed establishments from pubs, clubs,
betting shops and casinos will be able to make
use of Facial recognition to alert them to known
offenders and even individuals who may have
self-excluded themselves top stop themselves
gambling.
I also think in the analytics and false alarm
management side where sites are being
monitored, we can implement this to further
reduce false alarms and even alarm on certain
criteria that would have been not possible
before AI introduction. There also seems to be a
big push on furthering the HD over analogue
solutions with more powerful imaging and
concepts being pushed, giving more choice to
the installer.
I am very excited to see what 2018 brings us.
www.psimagazine.co.uk

Jamie Allam - Amthal
Whilst the economic and
political world continues with
uncertainty into the new year
with the unprecedented issues
of Brexit and global terrorism,
the technological advances in
product and service solutions within the fire and
security industry will continue at pace.
The impact will be positive, to those
prepared and willing to adapt and embrace the
opportunities.
The greatest trends will be found in smart
systems, which through 2017 have become
increasingly integrated, especially with the
evolutionary development of The Internet of
Things (IoT.)
As the consumer audience moves from early
adopters to mass-market buyers, there will
continue to be a clear shift in thriving on being
in with the ‘cool’ and ‘new’ gang, to focussing
intently on building long-term viability and trust
in the minds of our audience, the homeowner.
In commercial environments, building
management integration with fire and security
systems will continue to become more
sophisticated and require different skill sets
due to utilising different methods of
connectivity and networks for communication.
With this in mind, the industry needs to
quickly address the longstanding issue of its
skills shortage, especially of experienced
engineers able to embrace such technology, as
the shift to more IT based systems becomes a
reality.
Another key factor coming in 2018 is the new
GDPR regulations and the impact on access
control works. The need to limit access to office
blocks and contained data is a serious issue,
that is to be ignored at a company’s peril.
Those that are prepared and have taken
necessary actions prior to the impending
deadline of May 2018, will be best protected.
The use of body cameras in unexpected
sectors such as education, will continue in trials
over the coming year alongside acceptance in
Police and Emergency Services, balancing their
use against concerns rising of the creation of a
big brother society.
It is unclear whether the rise of drones will
really be felt in 2018, due to the ongoing
debates on licensing and air space together
www.psimagazine.co.uk
with their management and control. But the
development and impact on the industry will
inevitably grow in significance in the year to
come.
Rob Evans - CSL
2018 could yet be one of the
most significant for
Professional Security
Installers, with a series of
challenges and opportunities
to come in the next 12
months. The 25th May 2018 will see the
implementation of GDPR, but its impact will be
felt much sooner as companies move to ensure
they are compliant. This could be one of the
biggest forces for change next year, not only in
how suppliers market products and services to
the sector, but also in how Installers and ARCs
ensure their systems are encrypted and ‘GDPRready’.
Another major talking point of next year is
likely to be the PSTN upgrades as part of BT’s
ALL IP target of 2025. Whilst this again will have
significant impact on our sector, BT have yet to
make a public announcement on this. As BT
firms up its plans, and more detail emerges,
Installers will then be able to assess what
changes – if any – they need to make. We may
see more of a significant change beyond next
year.
The major differentiator between companies
in 2018 will be those looking to embrace new
technologies and those who do not. Progressive
companies will be looking to diversify and make
the most of the increasing amount of data and
value available to end-users. The recurring
revenues these systems offer, along with a
professional installation, should be a key USP
for our industry as we look to take on the next
challenges from elsewhere. Threats from other
sectors (IT amongst others) and the rise in nonregulated
installations will pose a challenge to
us all. However, this is nothing new, and it is
vital we as an industry work towards
demonstrating our value and professionalism to
ensure end-users do not compromise.
“Building management integration with fire and security
Engineers of tomorrow -
needed today!
Richard Jenkins, Chief Executive of
NSI reveals all that installers need to
know about finding and bringing on
new talent in the security sector
The fire and security sector is highly
competitive when it comes to finding and
retaining technically competent people.
According to the 2017 Engineering Today Survey,
nearly 5.7 million employees work in engineering
enterprises in the UK, representing just over 19%
of the total UK workforce.
The engineering workforce is getting older, and
in line with the rest of the UK economy, the
proportion of young workers in engineering (aged
under 25, especially) has been steadily
decreasing over the last ten years. Engineering
also continues to be male-dominated. Women
make up 46% of the UK workforce as a whole, yet
in engineering just one in eight are women, and
only 7% of those on the Engineering Register are
women. The UK has the lowest percentage of
women engineers in Europe and contrasts with
Russia and the former Warsaw Pact countries who
report a 50/50 spilt between the genders. The UK
is clearly lagging behind.
Projections for the growth in engineering jobs
indicate the UK is facing a possible 41% shortfall
come 2022. It is clear that the same skills gap is
apparent in the security and fire systems
installation arena.
How is Government helping?
The school curriculum has adopted a new
programme known as STEM (science, technology,
engineering and maths) to enhance interest and
engagement at an early age in these key technical
subjects. The programme includes the
recruitment of STEM Ambassadors - volunteers
from a wide range of STEM related jobs and
disciplines across the UK – to offer their time and
enthusiasm to schools to help bring STEM
subjects to life and demonstrate their value in life
and careers and inspire young people in the STEM
subjects.
A new apprenticeship
programme
Of course enhancing formal education is one
aspect, but many young people leave school
without a clear idea about their future.
As part of the Government’s Trailblazer
initiative, an employer group with the support of
key industry stakeholders has developed a fire,
emergency and security systems technicians’
apprenticeship. Launched in early 2017, this Level
3 apprenticeship takes 36 months to complete. It
offers a core module, a choice of ‘4 pathways’ or
The pathways offered include security
systems), fire, fire and emergency lighting or fire
and security. 80% of the training is ‘on the job’
whilst 20% is knowledge or classroom based.
The student takes end point assessment (EPA) at
any time during the final 12 weeks of the
apprenticeship.
The choice of training provider is key for
companies taking on apprentices and the
apprentices themselves. Some further education
colleges offer the training programme for the Fire,
Emergency and Security Systems. Alternatively
one of the NSI approved companies who open the
doors of their training academies to other
installers is one attractive alternative.
Promoting engineering careers
The fire and security sector is working hard to
raise the profile of the profession. Initiatives such
as the Engineers of Tomorrow (EoT) competition -
the finals of which are held during IFSEC - are an
opportunity to highlight and celebrate the
capabilities of those completing such
apprenticeships as they look toward careers in
security and fire systems.
The EoT competition is fun and encourages
employers to be part of promoting not only their
own engineers, but the sector in general. Each
year more than 60 young engineers – working in
teams of two – are pitted against each other. The
first, second and third placed winners are invited
to the Security & Fire Excellence Awards in
November, where their prizes, including a first
only does it demonstrate a commitment to
employee development, but it also means positive
exposure during IFSEC and at the annual awards
event.
During assessments for NSI approval, auditors
meet hundreds of engineers working in the fire
and security sectors. Engineers are not only
highly trained technicians but also key customer
facing staff, essential to the success of any
business.
Whether large or small, installation companies
all face a skills gap, a shortage of qualified
engineers. Like any resource that becomes
scarce, the engineers’ stock is likely to rise.
Whether by attracting more women to the
industry, targeting young people and school
leavers, changing how the industry recruits,
trains and retains its engineers, the challenge is
one that every business and the security sector as
a whole must face.
together raising standards
Meet the installer
Do you use a distributor or buy direct from
manufacturers?
We use both as we find this gives us a better
scope to cater for our client’s needs.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Yes the third party accreditation is beneficial to us
as our client base can be reassured that we work
to a set of auditable standards.
What would be a typical project for you?
Rolling out intruder alarm installs for a major
customer. Also on CCTV projects we find more and
more customers requiring remote viewing on
smart phones and tablets.
What would make your job easier?
A universal software application that has the
capabilities to help aid the specification, design
and implementation of any proposed system
design regardless of product type.
Do you think there is a skills shortage in
the industry?
The industry definitely has a skill level shortage.
Recruiting has been very difficult and it is hard to
find skilled engineers.
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
No common requests that prove to be impossible
as we always strive to meet our customers’
expectations, but customers sometimes ask us to
take a system over that we have not installed then
frown when we advise they need a new panel as
the previous company have locked the engineer
code.
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
That all CCTV systems hold recorded footage for
30 days, this spans from the days of time lapse
tapes in the recorders, when in essence you
should only keep footage for as long as necessary
due to date protection laws.
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
I believe with the vast development and
progression of the internet of things we will see
an impressive insurgence of end users integrating
their homes and businesses across all devices
including, and most importantly, their security
equipment.
What would be your ultimate fantasy
security product?
A miniature drone such as a “golden snitch” from
Harry Potter that could follow and track a user
utilising GPS from the mobile device and hover
above the user, constantly tracking and recording
the individual’s movements and activities via
CCTV and store the data within the cloud.
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
Absolutely, when fewer countries enter.
What would you do if you won £25,000?
I would take care of my wife and kids.
Persist or desist!
This month Jim Rathbone looks at
the need for persistence if you want
to be a leader in business. Failure
is not the end...
recently came across the story of a
Iremarkable man. He first went into business,
but his venture flopped. He switched to
politics, but his first year also flopped. He tried
his hand at business for a second time, but
failed again. That meant three failures in a row -
in three years.
He proposed to his fiancée after four years of
courtship, but she turned him down. Another
woman he was courting died some time later.
These pressures led to a nervous breakdown
and two years of convalescence, after which he
relaunched his political career with a bid to be
elected Speaker to the House of
Representatives. Once again he failed.
Two years later he was again defeated for the
position of Elector. Another three years after
this, he was defeated for a seat in Congress. He
left it for five years before he sought office
again, to be defeated again. Tragically his four
year old son died at around this time.
Seven years in the wilderness followed
before he ran for the Senate, to no avail. Three
years later he tried again for a seat in the
Senate, and failed again. Finally, two years later
and after twenty four years of dogged
persistence, Abraham Lincoln was elected as
the sixteenth President of the United States of
America.
Really successful leaders do not let setbacks
send them into irreversible downward spirals.
They learn from their mistakes and they persist
until they succeed.
• Thomas Edison once said, “I have not
failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t
work.” It is a good job that Edison did not give
up after 9,999 attempts; otherwise I might be
producing this content in candlelight and with
pen and paper.
• Henry Ford only succeeded after producing
overpriced, low-quality cars that were failures.
Learning from these led him to develop the
highly successful and groundbreaking Model T
in 1908.
• Walt Disney set out initially to be a
newspaper cartoonist. No one would hire him.
He then started a commercial art studio
followed by an animation company, both of
which went into liquidation. Disney moved and
started afresh in Los Angeles, only to fail again,
this time losing his most popular character,
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to a competitor.
Disney gave it another try, creating a mouse
called Mortimer - who his wife, Lillian, renamed
Mickey. The rest is history.
How are you handling the setbacks
that inevitably come your way?
Having the right mindset is critical
to success in business
How are you handling the setbacks that
inevitably come your way? Having the right
are you approaching 2018?
If you have had a challenging last 12 months,
how determined are you to find pathways to
succeed and achieve your business and
personal goals going forward?
ACCESS CONTROL
Attack of the clones
90 per cent of all access control cards in use today are easily copied and
cloned, with devices that are able to carry out this activity easily available
on the internet. Andrew Fulton of Vanderbilt talks to PSI about the scale of
the problem and suggests some of the measures that can be taken to
ensure that a building is as secure as possible.
Often considered the first line of defence
against those with malicious intent, there
is a growing realisation that many
contactless access control systems currently insitu
are vulnerable to those wishing to interfere
with information and operational technology
(IT/OT) systems. Most organisations are simply
not aware of just how easy they can have their
sensitive data and the hardware it is stored on
hacked - and that the tools to do it can be
purchased online for as little as £20.
Theory of evolution
As access control technology has developed over
the last 25 years, so too have the protocols used
to make it work. In the earliest days of contactless
systems, radio frequency identification (RFID) was
the de-facto choice for most manufacturers and
many systems with this technology are still in
use. In fact, the broader popularity of RFID for use
in tags, readers, labels, cards, fobs and all other
items shows no sign of waning, with IDTechEx
reporting that in 2017 the total market will be
worth $11.2bn, up from $10.52bn in 2016.
Although it took hackers many years to work
out how to infiltrate RFID systems, a cursory
search on YouTube throws up numerous videos of
individuals cloning readers with apparent ease.
When it comes to RFID, the problem is that
Wiegand, the industry standard over the air
protocol commonly used to communicate
credential data from a card to an electronic access
reader, is no longer inherently secure.
Once the problem surrounding RFID was
recognised, access control manufacturers began
to use the MIFARE protocol from NXP
Semiconductors. With 260 million readers and
compliance with ISO/IEC 14443, MIFARE is used
in more than 80 per cent of all contactless smart
cards today. However, in order to stay one step
ahead of the hackers, the company developed
MIFARE DESFire EV1 in 2006 and in 2016
augmented its offering with MIFARE DESFire EV2,
both of which, at the time of writing, cannot be
hacked.
Although some leading access control
manufacturers now use MIFARE DESFire EV1, over
the next year there will be a move towards
MIFARE DESFire EV2, due to it having features
that easier key rotation, easier support for other
applications on the card and extended read range.
Ticking time bomb
The good news is that companies such as NXP
Semiconductors are developing technology to
help thwart the hackers, but there are still many
(continued over)
hackers many years
ACCESS CONTROL
(from previous page)
organisations with access control systems that
feature outdated protocols. It should also
remembered that even when biometric devices
are used there are hacking tools out there that
make these systems equally at risk of attack,
unless proper actions are taken.
The internal threat should also be considered.
For instance, organisations can no longer rely on
the transactions on an audit report being
acceptable as proof of someone’s activities, as an
individual can simply claim it was not them and
that their card must have been copied. In
addition, many corporate compliance rules can
easily be broken by employees modifying their
passes to perform actions such as breaking the
banking rules on compulsory holidays, engaging
in secure document printing, and logging on to
unauthorised computer and other IT equipment.
The possible consequences of not taking this
issue seriously are numerous. According to the
UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) cybercrime has
now surpassed all other forms of criminal activity.
The NCA’s Cyber Crime Assessment 2016
recommended stronger law enforcement and
business partnership to fight cybercrime, with
‘cyber enabled fraud’ making up 36 per cent of all
crime reported, and ‘computer misuse’ accounting
for 17 per cent. The report also suggested that the
problem is likely far worse than the numbers
suggest, noting that cybercrime is vastly underreported.
On the look out
Maybe these figures should not come as too
much of a shock considering that infiltrating IT/OT
systems simply involves the use the card reader
protocol to enter a facility, allowing access to
computers. Those computers then act as a
gateway to the target’s internal internet, allowing
a hacker to access sensitive data that can be used
for a variety of purposes including identity theft
and industrial sabotage.
The amount of personal and corporate
information now stored via networks is growing
exponentially thanks to the Internet of Things
(IoT). Estimates about the amount of connected
devices set to be in use over the next few years
vary enormously. According to Intel, the IoT is
predicted to grow from two billion objects in 2006
to 200 billion by 2020, when there will be around
26 smart objects for every human being on Earth.
Meanwhile, IBM claims that every day we create
2.5 quintillion bytes of data – according to the US
definition that’s one followed by 18 zeros – and to
put that huge number into perspective, it equates
to filling up 57.5 billion 32Gb Apple iPads.
Data protection is an area where failure is not
an option – security, legal and regulatory
compliance is vital, while data loss and leakage
risks must be mitigated. On 25th May 2018, the
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
becomes European law. Its primary objectives are
to give citizens and residents control of their
personal data and to simplify the regulatory
environment for international business by
unifying the regulation within the European Union
(EU). It requires any organisation that operates in
the EU, or handles the personal data of people
that reside in the EU, to implement a strong data
protection policy, encompassing access, secure
storage and destruction.
Action plan
Organisations have to be more aware than ever of
how to protect themselves against hackers and
although it is the IT network infrastructure that is
the focus of attention in terms of preventing such
attacks, a comprehensive risk evaluation requires
Organisations can no
a meticulous approach to mapping all of an
organisation’s IT related assets and processes –
including access control.
One highly recommended course of action is to
carry out a penetration review that will identify
whether credentials can be cloned or copied, and
whether a system is vulnerable to a ‘sniffing’
attack. A sniffer is an application or device that
can read, monitor, and capture network data
exchanges and read network packets. If the
packets are not encrypted, a sniffer provides a full
view of the data inside the packet.
Many access control card readers are not fitted
with tamper devices and even those which are
tamper protected may not be removed and
checked after a tamper to see if a sniffer has been
fitted.
In the event that any weaknesses are
discovered, a security option that not only
secures the cards and readers but also uses the
latest Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP)
should be implemented to ensure that sniffing
devices can’t be installed behind the reader or
along the communications path. OSDP also allows
peripheral devices such as card readers and
biometric readers to interface with control panels
One of the reasons that hacking has become so
widespread is that the chances of getting caught are close
to zero. Prosecutions are disconcertingly rare
or other security management systems.
It is also possible to upgrade as many old
readers as required, depending on a risk
evaluation. Those readers that are upgraded will
securely read a new card and those left as less
important readers will simply read the old part of
the card, and can be upgraded when budget is
available.
Staying vigilant
One of the reasons that hacking has become so
widespread is that the chances of getting caught
are close to zero. Prosecutions are disconcertingly
rare and by the time the alarm is raised the culprit
has usually covered their tracks to evade
detection. In a world where 100 per cent
protection can’t be achieved, every organisation,
no matter its size, is a target and like most other
aspects of successful security strategy operation,
access control should be reviewed and tested on
a regular basis.
MOBILE SECURITY
Smarter smart systems
The recent drive
towards smartphones
and mobile
access/management
is the trend that has
given the sector a
new lease of life and
opened new avenues
for installers
Why do alarm panels and
professional security systems make
the best companions for
smartphone services? Here we look
at modern life and value added
developments
Depending on your age and your attitudes
towards social media and smartphone
usage you may well find that you have a
cynical viewpoint when it comes to the modern
mobile-centric population. However as the
electronic security industry is very much driven by
technology and the development of increasingly
more sophisticated methods of protecting and
securing people and premises, the scope of the
security market is edging further into the world of
the consumer market; no more so in the affinity
we now have with smartphone crossover tech. So
what’s the state of play today?
Now, let’s get one thing straight before we
start, we all know that certain businesses and
manufacturers follow trends and markets even
when there is no real demand for product (3D
CCTV and TV was a classic case in point – both
now defunct) and often the race to market is also
a race to be bigger, bolder and supposedly better.
For example, consider the resolution race in
the video surveillance market. The move from
analogue to IP helped reignite a market that
actually didn’t need reigniting as it was growing
very well thank you before networked systems
came along, but you could all see the benefits.
Higher resolutions were also regularly announced
with the introduction of cameras along the same
timelines as the launches in the domestic
television market. Sitting at the PSI editorial desk
throughout this period it was evident how the
sector was going at the time with manufacturers
launching incremental improvements up to 4K at
the same rate (and all claiming to be first past the
post!) until one ISC event saw a 7K launch that
made people realise the res race had run its
course and was, frankly, getting a bit out of hand.
Nowadays it’s all about what you can do with that
video data that the developers are working on
rather than trying to get us to move beyond 4K.
When it comes to the alarm market this sector
has seen more change in the last two years than it
had for some time previously. Of course it had
seen overwhelming improvement in the detection
side of things with false alarm numbers dropping
at incredible rates thanks to the development of
intelligent sensors, training and raised awareness
within the installer base. But in terms of a new
direction for panel manufacturers, the recent drive
towards smartphones and mobile
access/management and the Cloud is the trend
that has given the sector a new lease of life and
opened new avenues for installers.
So why smartphones and alarms? Essentially
the answer is the two platforms go hand in hand.
And what’s a bonus for alarm panel manufacturers
and installers is the IoT, home automation and
smart device generation lap up anything new,
plus our use of mobile devices today goes beyond
anything that Steve Jobs et al could ever have
38
www.psimagazine.co.uk

envisaged in the early days of taking on Nokia
and Blackberry with an alternative phone.
Consider also that according to the new Mobile
Consumer Habits study recently released by
Jumio, and conducted online by Harris Interactive,
smartphone usage is so prevalent in Americans’
everyday lives that nearly one in ten (9%)
smartphone owners admit to having used their
phone during sex, with 12% admitting to usage in
shower. We’re all connected, all of the time these
days so adding home control (which includes
security) to our mobile ability is a given, whatever
we happen to be doing. Smartphone addiction is
a real thing and is fed by the desire to run almost
every aspect of life through a mobile screen. It’s
an established lifestyle choice that can create
mass media interest when slightly thinner, better
camera, more waterproof versions are launched
every six months.
Let us not also forget that the whole of the
security sector is also going mobile. How many
video surveillance and access control
manufacturers have apps? Pretty much all of
them, with the others not far off, yet it is the
intruder alarm that really works hand-in-hand
with a smartphone. As already mentioned, both
are platforms that work together to offer a
genuine service you can see real value in, not
novelty, so there is a natural synergy. You can
predict that people will always want to check to
see if their property is safe and if you can tie in
sensors around the home that also perform
valuable tasks then the recurring revenue will be
there for installers as the user continues to
automate their home.
Elsewhere in this edition a collection of
industry experts give their predictions for 2018,
but for our tuppence worth look for the likes of
RISCO, Texecom, Pyronix and their peers to
continue to make phones and panels close
bedfellows to match the growing demand from
consumers. And it is a genuine demand, unlike
some new ideas that simply serve to find a home
for technology.
It’s all well and good jumping onto the latest
bandwagons but in order for new launches to be
successful they need to satisfy a real need or add
value for a user. Checking that a home is secure is
clearly of use and being able to remotely change
lighting etc to give the appearance of occupancy
is a great step towards moving opportunistic
burglars on. Perhaps an example of technology in
this market that is not really serving any useful
purpose is the electricity usage meter/app from
the utilities provider. Having a device to tell you
how much electricity you are using is not in itself
serving any useful function; you’re not going to
half boil the kettle or turn the TV off half way
through a film just to make the app show
efficiency. As my Dad used to say, turn off lights
when you’re not in a room, don’t heat rooms
you’re not in and keep internal doors closed.
That’s enough for most homes no matter what
marketing messages come from utilities suppliers
who want you to pay for a new service they have
dreamt up.
Of course what this modern leaning towards
smart technology has done is open up the market
to companies that previously had no role in the
sector. Often these are grown from the Kickstarter
crowd funding style approach and so placing the
security of ones most expensive purchase in the
hands of a glorified internal webcam is not ideal.
However the marketing messages surrounding
these devices also are compelling and no doubt
many blokes down the pub will be showing
footage of their homes on their phones.
Unfortunately all these types of cameras
ultimately only serve to show a theft taking place
and do not prevent it happening in the way that a
bell box on the wall and a professional alarm
system could.
Interestingly it was announced recently that
one such crowd funded security camera company
has done a deal with an online insurance provider
to give a 15% discount to homes that have their
camera system. Again this is a strong marketing
message, but will the insurer live to regret the
decision if payouts are common? As stated, the
internal camera will not prevent thefts so perhaps
no drop in incidents for claims is on the cards.
Going forward, look for more companies to
come and go in this market and perhaps one of
the businesses that already provides home
broadband, TV and phone services will also look
at the UK market, but expect strong years for the
established panel manufacturers as they match
the desire for robustly connected, secured homes
using smart devices that not only take care of
security but home automation as well.
PTZ camera utilises radar monitoring
technology for wide area coverage
360 Vision Technology has partnered with
Navtech Radar to create radar based
surveillance camera solutions for wide area
security monitoring and intruder detection.
Radar is able to accurately determine the
position and range of an object by measuring
the time it takes for radio energy to be reflected
and returned. Because the speed that the radio
energy travels at is known, the radar receiver
can measure the time it takes for the
energy to return, and using its builtin
software, calculate the distance
and position of the target.
Additionally, based on how
much radar energy is reflected
back, a figure of merit can be
calculated for each target, and the size
and identity of objects determined by the builtin
software.
Predator Radar scans 360 degrees twice every
second to detect and track objects, with all alarm activations
overlaid on screen. The camera unit’s radar detection is
unaffected by weather conditions, so object detection
and alarm functionality is continuous.
Door entry project continues at
former Olympic Village
Urmet has secured the second phase of its door
entry project at the former Olympic Village in
Stratford, East London. The latest work is in
addition to the installation of the company’s IPbased
door entry solution at buildings used to
accommodate athletes during the London 2012
Protecting a petrochemical
storage and distribution site
Hochiki Europe has supported the construction
of a new petrochemical storage and distribution
facility in Ghana, by supplying fire detection and
alarm equipment.
Called the New Petroleum Products Storage
and Distribution Terminal, the facility is spread
across an area of more than 113,000m/sq in the
port city of Tema. Eight buildings on the site all
required life safety protection.
Metron Energy Applications, a Greek-based
provider of oil and gas industry construction
solutions, led the development of the Tema
facility. The firm tasked fire safety solutions
supplier, Formula Techniki, with delivering a
detection system that met the requirements of
the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA)
National Fire Alarm and Signalling Code. Also
known as NFPA 72, this US standard includes
requirements specific to the fire safety risks
found in chemical facilities.
Olympic Games.
Main contractors, Mace, have used Urmet’s
IPervoice suite on two residential tower blocks of
26 and 30 storeys respectively, set within
communal squares and courtyards near the River
Lea and surrounded by amenities. Now known as
N08 – East Village, the area is already home to
6,000 people and the new towers will add a
further 481 flats to the area.
Urmet’s Elekta steel IP PoE entry panels have
been fitted to nine entrance points at the towers.
Elekta Steel is a vandal-resistant version of Elekta
that reduces the potential for vandalism with its
one-piece steel body and flush moving buttons.
The LCD colour display ensures easy use for
callers and can also show messages and a digital
route map to a chosen location on the site.
Residents at East Village screen their visitors
and communicate with them using Urmet’s Aiko
hands-free video internal monitors. These
monitors are 4.3-inch TFT units with a soft-touch
control panel.
East Village also benefits from Urmet’s
switchboard software.
It was also essential that any products
installed as part of the fire detection system
would allow the facilities managers to quickly
identify hazards in order to help take action to
protect the building and its occupants.
Formula Techniki specified a number of
products from Hochiki Europe’s Safety Integrity
Level (SIL) range. A total of 18 SIL approved wall
sounders and 45 SIL approved photoelectric
smoke sensors were installed across the storage
facility. These sensors feature variable
sensitivity levels, allowing the facilities
managers to increase or decrease the sensor
threshold, depending on the surrounding
operating environment. This improves the
signal-to-noise ratio, meaning the sensors can
be set to ensure they are not triggered by the
background noise caused by the constant
presence of airborne material normally found in
the vicinity, but only by the unique signals
resulting from the release of additional particles
generated by a fire. In doing so, it helps reduce
the risk of a false alarm.
19 SIL approved addressable weatherproof
manual call points were also installed
throughout the site. These allow building
occupants to manually sound the alarm in the
event of a fire or life safety incident, further
safeguarding against a system failure.
Both the photoelectric sensors and the
weatherproof manual call points installed at the
facility are compatible with Hochiki Europe’s ESP
open protocol, in line with Metron Energy
Application’s need for a flexible and intelligent
fire and life safety solution.
The life safety equipment at Tema has now
been installed, and the construction of the new
facility is now complete. As a result, the site now
has a fire safety system capable of meeting the
requirements of such a hazardous environment.
Avinor Oslo Airport expands its security
situation management solution
Qognify has recently expanded its security solution at Gardermoen
Oslo Airport with Situator, the company’s situation management
solution. Avinor, the group responsible for managing Norway’s
airports, decided to not only expand and upgrade Oslo Airport, but
unify its different systems to create a unified security platform.
A Qognify video management solution user since 2008, the
Airport, with the support of Racom, Qognify’s partner, the airport
added Situator Situation Management solution. The platform
integrates all existing systems – Qognify and third-party, including
thousands of surveillance cameras, access control and other
sensors. Situator structures and correlates the information from
these different systems for greater situational awareness, incident
management and effective response.
Being a major European airport, Oslo serves many Schengen
flights, meaning flights to the 26 European countries that have
officially abolished passport and all other types of border control at
their borders. Allowing the area to function as a single country for
international travel purposes dictates special operational
requirements using the Flexigate system. The Flexigate system
avoids incidents where the wrong doors are opened to ensure that
passengers who should go through the border control actually do
so. Situator integrates with the access control system, and
overrides switching of gates between Schengen and non-Schengen
flights, as well as the domestic flights if the control systems are out
of operations.
Avinor Oslo Airport: “Situator allows us to leverage our existing
technology, and extend the capabilities of those systems for
increased value. Our long-term partnership with Racom and Qognify
has given us the ability to smartly and cost-effectively upgrade our
security without having to rip and replace previous, viable
investments".
"Adding Qognify Situator to the security and operations program
at Oslo Airport has enabled us to confidently build true best-ofbreed
solution,” said Frode Igland, CEO, Racom AS. “The new
capabilities provide a common operating picture for all
stakeholders, improving security and operations”.
“Oslo Airport’s security program is one of the most advanced
ones among the many airports we are involved in,” commented Moti
Shabtai, Qognify’s CEO and President “Our partnership with Avinor
and Racom is a testament to how deep, long-term collaboration can
produce exceptional return on investment for the airport.”
situated in the school’s reception, at which point
an alarm is also raised.
Redbridge council has asked that all schools in
the area put lockdown systems in place, and
Woodbridge High School is one of the first in the
area to have mobilised its system. The gates are
fitted with CAME Stylo automation featuring a 24V
self-locking motor.
Frank Gordon, School Business Manager at
Woodbridge High School, says in today’s climate
security in schools in paramount: “No one enters
the school without authorisation at the perimeter,
and registration at reception. Each year we build
further layers of security, and in today’s climate it
is especially important to ensure our perimeter is
as secure as possible,” he explains.
Dave Mundy, Operations Director at Delta
Security, says lockdown procedures are becoming
increasingly prevalent in schools: “We have seen
increased interest from central London schools,
especially around transport hubs such as St
Pancras and Liverpool Street for a while now, and
more recently in schools further out from the City
centre.”
Project, which was designed to consolidate
multiple control centres into a single location.
With the Siklu mmWave EH-500TX and EH-
600TX radios, Burnley Town Centre can leverage
the licence free and lightly licenced V-band to
deliver reliable connectivity with 99.999% link
availability by operating over the uncongested
60GHz frequency and using narrow beams which
are immune to interference. The radios also
support PoE out so that the Hikvision cameras
can be wired directly into the Siklu radios
eliminating the need for additional switching
hardware. With the new infrastructure in place,
Burnley Town Centre has improved its public
safety and begun to build the foundation for a
modern smart city.
level of security was to install a CCTV system to
monitor the site. Shrewsbury Town’s chief
executive Brian Caldwell approached one of the
Club’s main sponsors Pro-Vision Distribution for
assistance. Following a site visit from a local
installation company, K.J Electronics Systems, the
new surveillance equipment was installed. Based
on the Samsung Wisenet brand, the agreed
specification included four vandal-resistant, true
day/night dome cameras, a high definition
external bullet camera and a pan/tilt/zoom
camera with all recorded data stored on a network
video recorder. The true day/night specification
ensures that all cameras are able to view images
24/7 irrespective of the amount of natural
daylight present and the recorder can
accommodate any additional cameras that may be
required in due course. Any alarm activation event
is sent to a central monitoring station via a
secured connection.
Colin Leatherbarrow
Grosvenor Technology has appointed Colin
Leatherbarrow to the position of Technical
Director.
“I am very pleased to be joining Grosvenor
Technology as Technical Director,” said Colin. “I
have been in the security industry for the vast
majority of my career and have recently left the
role of UTC Chubb Fire & Security UK’s Product
Director to join Grosvenor. Before working in
the corporate world of United Technologies I
started my career in a small and agile SME with
many similarities to GTL and in fact in days
gone past we collaborated with Grosvenor on
key high security projects, I count myself
extremely lucky to have the opportunity to
work again in a dynamic business with great
products, services, people and innovation.”
