Saluting Michael Spence
Granby Ambulance Association
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work as a first responder?
The most rewarding part of being a first responder is serving the people of the town that I have
always loved being a part of and have grown up in. Being able to make a positive difference in someone's
time of need feels fantastic.
Would you like to share a brief story related to your work as a first responder?
My favorite times on the job are the times I respond to calls with children who have an interest in
what we do as first responders. Being able to show young kids the different parts of the ambulance
and all the equipment we get to use feels amazing and turns a potentially scary experience into something
interesting for them to learn.
A: First of all, you have my permission to STOP searching for balance.
Achieving total balance is a myth. Balance is not a final destination—it’s
something you experience by participating in your life journey. Instead of
trying (then failing) to get to that non-existent destination, try this instead:
Write down your top 3 priorities in life right now. Then, as you go through
your day, weigh each decision and obligation (big or small) against your
priority list. Does it align with your priorities? If yes, then stick with it. Not
so much? Let it go. This exercise will help you focus on what truly matters,
and you’ll learn to lovingly say no to the rest. This will cut stress and help
you feel more balanced, one decision at
a time. For more tips on healthy living,
