Dear Friends,
We are delighted you can join us for “An Evening Under the Pines,”
our 2018 Winter fundraiser. Our talented auction committee, cochaired
by Elizabeth Edmonds and Kate O’Hagan, has been
working for months in preparation for this special night.
I am proud to be a part of the St. Christopher’s community, one that
supports the school as it continues to grow in the field of a boys’
moral and academic development. It is an honor to lead a school
that sets such an example of philanthropy by contributing in
numerous ways to enhance the experience of our boys.
Events such as tonight’s auction are a testament to the commitment
to the school shared by our parents, alumni, faculty, staff and
friends. In addition to helping provide essential program
enhancements and faculty professional development, proceeds
from tonight’s event will aid in the renovation of Morgan Auditorium
in the Lower School. This multipurpose space will get a muchneeded
facelift with attention paid to seating, flooring, lighting and
audiovisual improvements. It is through this philanthropic support
that we are able to pursue our critical Second Century Vision
initiatives and enhance the effectiveness of critical teaching and
learning spaces such as our Lower School Auditorium.
I join our auction co-chairs in thanking the dedicated volunteers and
donors for bringing this event to life as we work together to develop
the full potential of every boy in our care.
Parents, Friends, Alumni and Faculty,
Welcome to the 2018 St. Christopher's School Auction, "An Evening Under the
Pines," a name which reminds us all of the magnificent trees towering over the
school's beautiful historic corridor. Tonight we hope you enjoy this enchanting
evening at The Jefferson Hotel. We are so thankful for the many volunteers and
generous donors who have made significant contributions of their time and
resources. We especially appreciate the hard work of all the members of the
Auction Committee and the amazing St. Christopher's staff who have given freely
of their time and effort.
This is a night for us to come together for our boys and to show our gratitude to
St. Christopher's and all it is does for our families. It is also a night to have FUN!
We hope that you will find the auction items exciting and appealing. Be certain to
check out your child's class project and other enticing silent auction packages. A
lively game of Heads and Tails (always a crowd pleaser) will precede our grand
live auction this year complete with one-of-a-kind trips and thoughtful offerings
you will not want to miss!
What makes this auction very special indeed is the dedication of the funds raised
to the revitalization of the Lower School Auditorium (LSA). Mention the LSA and
one quickly recalls bravely recited poems and earnestly run meetings by boys
(the youngest of men) in red sweaters. For years on end, audience members
have been transported to another place and time during the beloved Lower
School musical, a production where truly every boy gets to be on stage. The
Auction Committee is honored to be a part of an enhancement of this special
place: a chapel, a stage, a classroom and the home to so many St. Christopher’s
School traditions.
Once again, have a ball tonight! Our many thanks to you for joining us “under the
pines” – a celebration of and for our boys!
302. WHO WOULDN’T WANT THIS WOODWARD?
Local artist and Saints mom Mary Kathryn Woodward loves color! Her paintings
are most often created with palette knife and brush. Using mixed media, she
develops a strong contrast of vibrant, saturated colors, often in layers and with a
variety of textures. Through her choices in color palette, she attempts to bring
her paintings a voice that is both reflective and appealing. Mary Kathryn’s
paintings can be found in Virginia galleries and private collections. Most recently,
she was the featured artist for Whitney Forstner’s blog www.artforthehome.
Take home this playful framed painting of a barnyard rooster. With the wildly
successful Richmond 2015 UCI Road World Championships behind him, Wilson
Flohr can now spend more time focusing his attention and talents on his lifelong
interest - art. Several years ago, he began studying and working with some
exceptional artists here and abroad, including Robert Johnson, Curney Neffer,
Loryn Brazier, David Tanner and Jill Logan. Through his art, he strives to capture
that unique moment when a trip, a visit or just a passing glance becomes an
image one holds and treasures forever.
Wilson Flohr
306. WESTHAMPTON
This brightly colored 12” x 16" plein air oil of a street scene in the Westhampton
area was painted by Marjorie Perrin – an artist who paints traditional subject
matter with a fresh eye. Her style is influenced by Impressionism and Classical
Realism. She shares her enthusiasm for creating art with her students at The
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School where she has been teaching Studio
Art since the 1980s. Her work is included in numerous private and corporate
collections in Richmond including: The Governor's Mansion, Media General, The
Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, CSX Corporation, E.R. Carpenter Corp.,
The Medical College of Virginia, Henrico Doctor's Hospital and Mutual Assurance.
Marjorie Perrin
307. PINING FOR A PINNEY
Janie Pinney's love for art started when, as a child, she took weekly painting
classes and was introduced to the inviting world of oil paints. She has studied
studio art, art history, arts management and faux finishing and was constantly
drawn to, and challenged by, different facets of art. Janie continues to explore
with abstract and traditional painting in hopes of evoking a connection through
color, texture, and composition.
Janie Pinney
308. GOTTA GET THIS GEHRING
310. FIND THE ART IN PARTEE
We bet you didn’t know that Lower School Kindergarten Aide Laura Partee is
also a fantastic artist. She has created this original oil painting that we know will
be enjoyed by all who see it, especially her students!
Laura Partee
311. FAR OUT
Chris Shands is a Richmond contemporary artist whose work is influenced by her
travels in the Far East as a child. The use of bold but feminine colors, coupled
with a touch of gold leaf bring a delicate nature to her abstract and figurative
paintings. Chris begins many of her paintings by layering rich colors using
random brush strokes. Utilizing various tools, she begins the process of pushing
and pulling the paint, manipulating the layers and editing out what is no longer
needed. This process allows the history of the many layers to reveal themselves
on the canvas.
Chris Shands
312. DON’T DALLY FOR THIS TALLEY
Laura Talley attempts to capture the random order of the natural world in her
work. She posits that objects in nature do not follow a discernible pattern and
strives for the same approach in her work. The creative process occurs
organically as each painting takes shape. To help achieve the effect of
randomness, she drags texturizing medium across a blank canvas and adds
multiple layers of thinned acrylic paint; she moves paint around the canvas using
a blow dryer or tilting the canvas rather than using a brush. Multiple colors are
dripped onto the canvas to intermingle. Laura’s work has been described as
ephemeral and complex, but not fussy.
Laura Talley
313. UPPER SCHOOL CHAPEL
Take home this 8” x 10” acrylic on canvas painting of St. Christopher’s Upper
School Chapel. Dr. Churchill Chamberlayne, founder of the school, was an
Episcopal priest who recognized the significance of daily chapel in undergirding
the school’s core values. Upper School boys start every day in chapel, and
alumni repeatedly remember this daily gathering as the most memorable ritual of
their St. Christopher’s experience. Angie Hutchison is a Saints parent and artist.
314. TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN
As the total solar eclipse swept across a narrow portion of the U.S. this past
summer, award-winning photographer and St. Christopher’s student Tyler
Hutchison ’19 traveled to Columbia, South Carolina to capture its magnificence.
This framed 8”x10” photograph will be a great reminder of the interest that swept
the world regarding this phenomena.
and also attended the University of Georgia Art program in Cortona, Italy. Her
work has been featured in numerous publications and can be found in private
and corporate collections all over the country.
Sunny Goode
317. ELEANOR COX
Eleanor Cox paints for the joy of painting, finding it a natural way to express her
ideas, impressions, and reactions to nature, color, and mood. Using landscape,
the garden, and still life, she captures her excitement of putting a brush to paper,
making marks, creating edges, and using brilliant color. She enjoys sharing her
skills in workshops and private classes. Her work is in many private and
corporate collections, including Forbes Magazine, Wells Fargo, Philip Morris
Corporation, CSX, Capital One, First Union Bank, and James River Corporation.
True English gardens are both timeless and beautiful. Joe Knox, former St.
Christopher's teacher, captures the true essence of an English garden in this
lovely 11” x 14” original framed oil painting. Whether in your home or in your
office, this painting will be appreciated by all.
