Dear Friends, 

We are delighted you can join us for “An Evening Under the Pines,” 

our 2018 Winter fundraiser. Our talented auction committee, cochaired 

by Elizabeth Edmonds and Kate O’Hagan, has been 

working for months in preparation for this special night. 

I am proud to be a part of the St. Christopher’s community, one that 

supports the school as it continues to grow in the field of a boys’ 

moral and academic development. It is an honor to lead a school 

that sets such an example of philanthropy by contributing in 

numerous ways to enhance the experience of our boys. 

Events such as tonight’s auction are a testament to the commitment 

to the school shared by our parents, alumni, faculty, staff and 

friends. In addition to helping provide essential program 

enhancements and faculty professional development, proceeds 

from tonight’s event will aid in the renovation of Morgan Auditorium 

in the Lower School. This multipurpose space will get a muchneeded 

facelift with attention paid to seating, flooring, lighting and 

audiovisual improvements. It is through this philanthropic support 

that we are able to pursue our critical Second Century Vision 

initiatives and enhance the effectiveness of critical teaching and 

learning spaces such as our Lower School Auditorium. 

I join our auction co-chairs in thanking the dedicated volunteers and 

donors for bringing this event to life as we work together to develop 

the full potential of every boy in our care.

designated student’s name and current grade for each raffle ticket. 

• The sale of raffle tickets will end at 8pm on Saturday, February 10, 2018. 

• You may combine your raffle purchase and reservation fee on one check 

made payable to St. Christopher’s Parents Association (or STCPA). 

RAFFLE RULES 

Raffle proceeds will be split 50/50 with the winner (to be used toward tuition 

credit only) and the Parents Association. 

Each ticket must be designated with the name and grade of a current St. 

Christopher’s student. The tuition reduction will be applied to the St. 

Christopher’s 2018/2019 school year for the designated, enrolled student. The 

amount does not include books, meals and other incidental fees. Refunds and 

cash exchanges are not permitted. 

You are not required to be present nor do you need your ticket stub to win. 

However, if you would like, you may arrange to verify your ticket stubs by calling 

the Development Office at St. Christopher’s (804-282-3185).

Welcome to the 2018 St. Christopher's School Auction, "An Evening Under the 

Pines," a name which reminds us all of the magnificent trees towering over the 

school's beautiful historic corridor. Tonight we hope you enjoy this enchanting 

evening at The Jefferson Hotel. We are so thankful for the many volunteers and 

generous donors who have made significant contributions of their time and 

resources. We especially appreciate the hard work of all the members of the 

Auction Committee and the amazing St. Christopher's staff who have given freely 

of their time and effort. 

This is a night for us to come together for our boys and to show our gratitude to 

St. Christopher's and all it is does for our families. It is also a night to have FUN! 

We hope that you will find the auction items exciting and appealing. Be certain to 

check out your child's class project and other enticing silent auction packages. A 

lively game of Heads and Tails (always a crowd pleaser) will precede our grand 

live auction this year complete with one-of-a-kind trips and thoughtful offerings 

you will not want to miss! 

What makes this auction very special indeed is the dedication of the funds raised 

to the revitalization of the Lower School Auditorium (LSA). Mention the LSA and 

one quickly recalls bravely recited poems and earnestly run meetings by boys 

(the youngest of men) in red sweaters. For years on end, audience members 

have been transported to another place and time during the beloved Lower 

School musical, a production where truly every boy gets to be on stage. The 

Auction Committee is honored to be a part of an enhancement of this special 

place: a chapel, a stage, a classroom and the home to so many St. Christopher’s 

School traditions. 

Once again, have a ball tonight! Our many thanks to you for joining us “under the 

pines” – a celebration of and for our boys!

Purchasing a $125 ticket entitles you to delicious hors d'oeuvres, a seated dinner, beverages 

of your choice and an evening of fun-filled entertainment and bidding. Please familiarize yourself 

with the auction packages and procedures, and bring this catalog with you to the auction. 

BIDDING 

MOBILE BIDDING 

Welcome to 501 Auction, St Christopher’s 

mobile bidding system! When you check 

in, you will be sent our 501 Auction link to 

your smart phone so you can bid from 

anywhere on the premises at any time! 

There will be more information and detailed 

instructions for you when you arrive on 

February 10. 


Thanks to the use of mobile bidding, the 

Silent Auction will remain open until 9PM. 

LIVE AUCTON 

You will outbid your friends by raising your 

numbered marker. Spotters will be 

dispersed throughout the room to make 

sure your bid is recorded. 

PROXY BIDDING 

You can bid on packages without attending 

the auction! This is your chance to win 

without being there. Proxy bidding allows 

friends, colleagues, and guests of St. 

Christopher’s who are unable to attend the 

auction to submit a maximum bid amount. 

The Parents Association, along with the 

Development Office, will assign official 

proxy bidders to place bids on your behalf 

for Silent or Live Auction packages. 

All proxy bids will continue to be placed at 

the next incremental level until either a 

maximum is reached or the package is 

won. All proxy bidders will be contacted 

the week following the auction regarding 

successful bidding.

express check-out will process your credit 

card or accept a signed check to be 

completed at the end of the evening. 

Auction packages bought by a group must 

be paid in full by the entire group at one time. 

PICK-UP 

Items must be taken home the night of the 

auction unless arrangements have been 

made. The Auction Committee and St. 

Christopher’s School are not responsible 

for auction items not removed by the 

successful bidder at the conclusion of the 

auction.

Your son will have a fabulous time making slime with Lower School science

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School where she has been teaching Studio

Chris Shands is a Richmond contemporary artist whose work is influenced by her 

travels in the Far East as a child. The use of bold but feminine colors, coupled 

with a touch of gold leaf bring a delicate nature to her abstract and figurative 

paintings. Chris begins many of her paintings by layering rich colors using 

random brush strokes. Utilizing various tools, she begins the process of pushing 

and pulling the paint, manipulating the layers and editing out what is no longer 

needed. This process allows the history of the many layers to reveal themselves 

on the canvas.

312. DON’T DALLY FOR THIS TALLEY 

Laura Talley attempts to capture the random order of the natural world in her 

work. She posits that objects in nature do not follow a discernible pattern and 

strives for the same approach in her work. The creative process occurs 

organically as each painting takes shape. To help achieve the effect of 

randomness, she drags texturizing medium across a blank canvas and adds 

multiple layers of thinned acrylic paint; she moves paint around the canvas using 

a blow dryer or tilting the canvas rather than using a brush. Multiple colors are 

dripped onto the canvas to intermingle. Laura’s work has been described as 

ephemeral and complex, but not fussy.

School Chapel. Dr. Churchill Chamberlayne, founder of the school, was an

the school’s core values. Upper School boys start every day in chapel, and 

alumni repeatedly remember this daily gathering as the most memorable ritual of

Mary Nelson has lived in Richmond almost all her life. She majored in French 

and Art History in college and graduate school. Both of her sons graduated from 

St. Christopher’s, and she now has five grandsons at the school. Mary took her 

first art classes at the Virginia Museum Studio School where she studied drawing 

with Eleanor Rufty and photography with Hil Scott. Later instruction included 

drawing from Marjorie Perrin and Wolfgang Jasper, oil pastels from Diane 

Detamore and oil painting from Laura Loe. The inspiration for this lovely 

11” x 14” oil on board unframed piece, titled The Lily Shed, comes from summers 

spent in Maine.

After Dee Hyers retired from fashion design, manufacturing and retailing, she 

decided to become an artist, as well as a photographer. Living in Italy for 15 

years, she was influenced and inspired by the mix of old world Italian culture and

An abstract painter from Virginia, Dandridge "Dede" Davis is known for her large 

acrylic abstract paintings as well as smaller encaustic (beeswax) paintings. She 

received a B.A. with honors in Studio Art from Hollins University in 1989 and, 

within a few years, her work was featured in galleries from California to 

Richmond. In 2010, the Federal Reserve Bank (Richmond) acquired one of her 

large pieces for their permanent collection. Her work has been called intuitive 

abstract painting and she loves to paint simple forms in nature through texture, 

shape and color.

A state and national award-winning artist, Catherine Both received her B.F.A. 

degree from Florida State University and completed her graduate work at the

to create art that helps people appreciate the beauty in life and heighten one's 

senses to the ordinary which transcends to the extraordinary." The soothing

Poet Laureate of Virginia and is a former president of the Poetry Society of
