WITHIN FRAMES
▲ This exhibit gives an insight into the art of the sixties in Hungary, when the
communist power classified cultural works according to the notorious system of
the “Three Ts,” standing for the Hungarian words Tiltott, Tűrt, Támogatott, meaning
“Forbidden”, “Tolerated” and “Supported.” These were years of political consolidation in
Hungary, bracketed by the major historic events of the 1956 Revolution in Hungary and
the Prague Spring of 1968; interesting times bringing forth interesting art. Hungarian

↔ The Palace of Arts always has a
high-quality program of classical
and jazz concerts, dance and ballet,
opera and theater. Among them are
the shows of the Hungarian modern
circus “Recirquel,” internationally
acclaimed for their magical
acrobatics, enchanting play with light
and color, and spectacular effects.
This month they play “Paris at Night,”
which takes you back to the nightlife
scenes of the city of light in the

MATTHIAS CHURCH
The beautiful Matthias Church on
Castle Hill is also a venue for concerts
by various ensembles, from wellknown
Hungarian choirs to the
Hungarian Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra
and the Duna String Orchestra.
They perform classical works in
the breathtaking surroundings
of the splendid church where
King Matthias was married and
Sissi was crowned queen

TASTE OF TRADITION
The Hungarian Evening every Friday in
restaurant Araz consists of a buffetdiner
of typically Hungarian food and
drink accompanied by traditional
village music by a live band and a
demonstration of a few folk dances.
It is a perfect set-up to taste a bit of
everything, while the bandleader
also provides short explanations
about the various dances
from different regionsand the
traditional instruments they play.

TOSCA
The splendid Opera House itself is
closed for renovations, so the Erkel
theater is the only place where operas
are being performed. “Tosca” is one
of Puccini's most known and most
shocking operas. It is set in a time
that the fate of Rome depended
on French emperor Napoleon and
political terror has become an
essential part of Roman life. The might
of authority even extends to the love
between a painter and a celebrated
