Duration: Between 30 minutes and 4 hours Departs: On Request White Island Tour Operator: White Island Tours Moutohora: Island Sanctuary Operator: White Island Tours Sightseeing Cruise across the pristine waters of the Bay of Plenty to White Island – New Zealand’s most active volcano. After donning hard hats and gas masks, guides will lead you on an exploration of the crater. Experience roaring fumaroles, sparkling sulphur chimneys, bubbling pools of mud and the spectacular main crater. Along with the spectacular scenery, visitors will also learn about the island’s fascinating history and its often tragic stories of the sulphur miners that attempted to harvest its resources. After returning to the boat there is time to enjoy the supplied packed lunch while cruising around the outer walls of the volcano. The return journey often provides the opportunity to spot marine life such as dolphins and whales. Back in Whakatane, White Island Rendezvous offers a range of accommodation options opposite the wharf and PeeJays Café is open for great food and coffee. Duration: 5-5.5 hours Departs: Varies daily - between 8am and 10am Sightseeing Take a short boat ride to visit one of NZ’s most restricted wildlife sanctuaries. Moutohora (also known as Whale Island) is home to a number of endangered bird species such as the Saddleback, Kakariki (NZ parakeet), and the North Island Brown Kiwi. It is also home to NZ’s living dinosaur, the Tuatara, and three other species of lizard. On a fully guided tour visitors to the island will learn about the island’s cultural significance to the local Maori tribe which had a village based on the island in pre-European times. Along with spectacular views and beautiful bush life the tour includes time at the island’s hot water beach where visitors can dig their own warm water pool in the sand or swim in the bay’s clear waters.
