90 YEARS SERVING THE COMMUNITY 90 YEARS 1926 - SERVING 2016 THE COMMUNITY 1926 - 2016<br />

The annual Confirmation Service was<br />

conducted by Bishop Anthony on Sunday<br />

May12th. In a packed church 15 young<br />

people confirmed <strong>the</strong> promises made on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir behalf at <strong>the</strong>ir Baptism. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

accompanied <strong>the</strong> Junior Church to Brecon<br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>dral <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g weekend to take<br />

part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Annual Diocesan Children’s Fun<br />

Day. It was a day packed with activity for<br />

all with, perhaps, <strong>the</strong> high spot for <strong>the</strong><br />

children was listen<strong>in</strong>g to Kev<strong>in</strong> Johns <strong>of</strong><br />

Swansea Sound talk<strong>in</strong>g about funny th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

that had happened to him.<br />

In keep<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United<br />

K<strong>in</strong>gdom, early June saw <strong>the</strong> celebrations<br />

held on <strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Golden<br />

Anniversary <strong>of</strong> Queen Elizabeth II and, for<br />

us <strong>in</strong> <strong>St</strong> Hilary’s, a number <strong>of</strong> celebratory<br />

activities took place. The Mo<strong>the</strong>rs’ Union<br />

held a Jubilee Garden Party, <strong>the</strong> Ladies<br />

Guild a Jubilee Even<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> Bowls<br />

Club held a Jubilee Banquet. One <strong>of</strong> our<br />

<strong>parish</strong>ioners, Mrs<br />

Va l P a r r y, w a s<br />

fortunate enough to<br />

be selected to attend<br />

<strong>the</strong> Queen’s Golden<br />

Jubilee Classical<br />

Concert held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

g r o u n d s o f<br />

Buck<strong>in</strong>gham Palace.<br />

The wea<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong><br />

day was glorious and<br />

Val experienced what<br />

is now a host <strong>of</strong> very treasured memories.<br />

At a meet<strong>in</strong>g held <strong>in</strong> July <strong>the</strong> Vicar<br />

considered <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>reet Warden,<br />

and established a wide role <strong>of</strong> service for<br />

<strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong> Hilary’s by <strong>the</strong> Warden.<br />

Basically, it called for <strong>the</strong> Warden to be<br />

more <strong>in</strong> touch with <strong>the</strong> Vicar and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

wards so that vital <strong>in</strong>formation could be<br />

freely passed between <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

In a recent P.C.C. meet<strong>in</strong>g it was decided to<br />

formulate two sub committees: one, <strong>the</strong><br />

Social and Fund rais<strong>in</strong>g committee - its<br />

Page !11<br />

purpose be<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>of</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g and organis<strong>in</strong>g social and fund<br />

rais<strong>in</strong>g events that would appeal to <strong>the</strong><br />

wider community as well as those who<br />

regularly attend church.<br />

A Parish Centre Committee was also<br />

formed to oversee <strong>the</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre<br />

i.e. <strong>the</strong> Parish Hall.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> school summer holidays <strong>the</strong><br />

youngsters, belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> church, went<br />

on a Youth Camp at Gwernyfydd, near Hay<br />

on Wye. The wea<strong>the</strong>r, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir visit,<br />

was wonderful and it was only on <strong>the</strong>ir last<br />

day that ra<strong>in</strong> came. Many activities, many<br />

‘get toge<strong>the</strong>rs’, s<strong>in</strong>g songs, religious<br />

activities and outward bound events took<br />

place and all returned look<strong>in</strong>g forward to<br />

next year’s camp.<br />

Late <strong>in</strong> September at <strong>the</strong> annual Harvest<br />

Festival service we were pleased to<br />

welcome <strong>the</strong> Rev’d Michael Walters who<br />

had been a Curate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early<br />

1960’s. Hav<strong>in</strong>g left <strong>the</strong> district to become<br />

an Army Chapla<strong>in</strong>, he had retired from that<br />

post and been appo<strong>in</strong>ted to <strong>the</strong> Parish <strong>of</strong><br />

Penclawdd. This service had been<br />

designated a Gift Day and <strong>the</strong> proceeds was<br />

shared between <strong>the</strong> Diocesan Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Social Responsibility, which had taken on<br />

<strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former Children’s Society,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Rev. Keith Thomas’s appeal for a<br />

Hospice <strong>in</strong> Bloemfonte<strong>in</strong>.<br />

An annual service, held <strong>in</strong> December <strong>of</strong><br />

each year, was <strong>the</strong> Toy Service which<br />

culm<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> gifts to go<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> Mr X appeal ... a Swansea<br />

Charity which has run for many years. This<br />

year <strong>the</strong> service was led by <strong>the</strong> Junior<br />

Church. The <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> service was<br />

‘Children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World’ and <strong>the</strong> children<br />

who attended were given <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

dress up <strong>in</strong> costumes <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r countries.<br />

The appeal requested 75 wrapped parcels<br />

for named children who were <strong>in</strong><br />

impoverished situations or who were sick...<br />

needless to say <strong>the</strong> number received was<br />

well over <strong>the</strong> requested amount.<br />
