A letter from Kitui told <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> buy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a<br />

cow for a milk supply. It was to calve <strong>in</strong><br />

October... two for <strong>the</strong> price <strong>of</strong> one as Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Tim commented!<br />

Kitui is a Diocese <strong>in</strong> Eastern Kenya. The<br />

people are very poor, ek<strong>in</strong>g out an<br />

existence from small scale farm<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

tend<strong>in</strong>g livestock <strong>in</strong> an arid area <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

subject to devastat<strong>in</strong>g droughts and fam<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Because <strong>the</strong>ir resistance is so low, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was a high <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> HIV: 40% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

beds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> four hospitals are taken up with<br />

HIV/AIDS patients. Poverty meant that<br />

people could not afford treatment and<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e. Kitui was grateful for <strong>the</strong> help<br />

given <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>St</strong> Hilary’s.<br />

It was dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> academic year 2004/05<br />

that we welcomed <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> choir two young<br />

sopranos: Megan Wagner from California,<br />

who was on an exchange programme and<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g, or should I say read<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>History</strong><br />

and American <strong>St</strong>udies and Helen <strong>St</strong>okes<br />

who was at <strong>the</strong> University read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>History</strong><br />

and Politics <strong>in</strong> her third year. Their <strong>in</strong>put<br />

was much appreciated and it was with<br />

sadness that we said goodbye to <strong>the</strong>m both<br />

at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academic year.<br />

Fall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with current th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Archdeaconry <strong>of</strong> Gower <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

posts were created and filled:<br />

Child Protection Officer - Haulwen<br />

Lumsda<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Children’s M<strong>in</strong>istry Officer - Mary<br />

Williams/Carol Conway<br />

Gift Aid Organiser - Ken James<br />

Health and Safety Officer - Cos Genko<br />

Youth M<strong>in</strong>istry - Jeremy Harris.<br />

These posts were confirmed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> May<br />

P.C.C. meet<strong>in</strong>g which, after listen<strong>in</strong>g to Mr<br />

Nigel K<strong>in</strong>g, Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>ewardship<br />

Division gave an explanation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

work<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> MYCMI (Make Your Church<br />

More Invit<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

In <strong>the</strong> June meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P.C.C. <strong>the</strong> ideas<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d MYCMI were discussed and from it<br />

a number <strong>of</strong> activities, which were thought<br />

to be <strong>of</strong> use, were proposed. It was also<br />

decided to approach <strong>the</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

church by <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g a Cab<strong>in</strong>et way <strong>of</strong><br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration and a number <strong>of</strong> members<br />

were appo<strong>in</strong>ted to be responsible for <strong>the</strong><br />

very many activities taken on.<br />

Summertime that year saw a glorious<br />

Teddy Bear Party as a last activity <strong>in</strong> that<br />

term. A large number <strong>of</strong> families attended<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir teddy bears. Fa<strong>the</strong>r Tim<br />

turned up with his childhood friend. A<br />

glorious time was had by all and <strong>the</strong> food<br />

at <strong>the</strong> picnic was very welcome <strong>in</strong>deed.<br />

The Summer Fete also enjoyed sunny<br />

warm wea<strong>the</strong>r and at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day,<br />

£1,500 was raised. A table top sale was<br />

held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prec<strong>in</strong>ct dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> August Fun<br />

Week organised by <strong>the</strong> Killay Community<br />

Council. This resulted <strong>in</strong> a fur<strong>the</strong>r £250<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> Church Centre. Christian Aid<br />

was also supported to <strong>the</strong> tune <strong>of</strong> £1,000<br />

which was sent to <strong>the</strong> local organiser <strong>in</strong><br />

Carmar<strong>the</strong>n, Mr Tom Davies.<br />

Read<strong>in</strong>g this report one would imag<strong>in</strong>e that<br />

all <strong>St</strong> Hilary’s was concerned with was <strong>the</strong><br />

rais<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> money. Well, yes, <strong>in</strong> a way for, <strong>in</strong><br />

order to meet <strong>the</strong> modern laws, we were <strong>in</strong><br />

debt, but while we were conscious <strong>of</strong> that<br />

debt, <strong>the</strong> services were regularly attended<br />

and our worship s<strong>in</strong>cere. O<strong>the</strong>r activities<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g August 2005 – <strong>the</strong> normal month <strong>of</strong><br />

holiday<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> weekly activities rest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

– <strong>the</strong>re were four Baptisms and, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

September, six Marriages.<br />

Early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> September, a<br />

Pudd<strong>in</strong>g Party was held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre.<br />

Organised by Beryl Harris and friends it<br />

was a glorious pudd<strong>in</strong>g tast<strong>in</strong>g affair which<br />

tempted <strong>the</strong> eyes and stra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

waistband. Naturally, it was well received<br />

and resulted <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r £550 be<strong>in</strong>g raised<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Church Centre Fund.<br />
