A Day of HERActivty
The first of an intended series of HERA – Everyday Goddess events took place
in November 2017 at Manurewa Netball Centre.
The day dubbed ‘HERActvity Day’ saw seven different
sport and recreation organisations offering modified
games or have a go sessions to approximately 40
year nine and ten girls from three different schools;
Papatoetoe High School, Southern Cross Campus
and Manurewa High School. The central theme of the
day was creating connections between the girls, the
schools and the sports with many of the girls who
participated being identified as non-participants in
either extra curriculum sport or P.E. class.
As a participant-led project, all seven activities were
identified by the girls as part of the planning for the
day. Sporting and recreation organisations present at
the event were Papatoetoe Weightlifting Club, Turbo
Touch, Manurewa Football Club, CLM Out & About
team, OnBoard Skate Sisters of Shred, Auckland
Basketball Limited Services and Counties Manukau
Rugby. As a connection to potential employment
opportunities a large number of female police officers
joined in on the activities on the day and interacted
with the HERA girls.
The events aim was to provide
an environment for the girls to
experience minimum barriers to
participation.
Next steps forward will be to provide a template
to partners so they have the capability to deliver a
similar day in their local communities. There is also
a need to build the partnership between sport and
recreation organisations and the respective schools
with support from the new Regional Sports Director
for Counties Manukau.
94% of participants indicated
that they feel more supported than they
did when they arrived at the event
81% of participants indicated that
they feel more motivated to get active
than I did when I arrived this morning
87% of participants are quite likely
to continue to do one of these activities
again in the future.
