The New Zealand American Football Federation received funding through
the KiwiSport Counties Manukau Fast Fund. Below we profile its EndZone
programme – a junior version of the non-contact American Flag Football game.
Why did you apply for the Counties
Manukau Fast Fund?
As part of introduction we needed to raise awareness of
the activity and the opportunity to play hence the request
for Fast Fund assistance to run a holiday programme in
Manurewa during the October holidays. The area has a
number of primary and intermediate schools which are
the target age groups for the activity and the holiday
programme was a “kick-start” for EndZone.
What did the delivery model look like?
The holiday programme was delivered by the local sport
delivery group, Activ8. It was well attended by over 50
participants. This has led to a short league competition at
Mountfort Park in term 4, 2017 and term 1, 2018,
with the assistance of Rangers Gridiron.
Where to next with the EndZone
programme? The holiday programme and the
subsequent league are a pilot programme with the plan
being to deliver ongoing, local, accessible, leagues at
targeted locations in Auckland and in other centres
around the country.
Over time the number of players playing Flag Football
will increase across the age groups and players will have
opportunities to attend regional and national events and
also to play the contact version of American Football.
There will also be the opportunity to be considered for
scholarships to schools in the USA for both versions of
the sport.
