Santa Paula defeats Sharks 3-2 in Malibu
Ryan Flynn, Freelance Reporter
After a flurry of scoring in
the first half, the Sharks offense
went cold on Friday, Jan.
19.
Malibu girls soccer, which
had scored two or more goals
in only three of their seven
games this season, had two in
the first half alone.
From then on, however, they
were unable to find the back of
the net, ultimately losing 3-2
in double overtime to visiting
Santa Paula.
The Sharks are now 2-5-1 on
the season and 1-2 in league
play under first-year coach
Sam Nellis.
Santa Paula controlled the
game early, keeping the ball
in Malibu territory. The teams
went back and forth, scoring
two goals apiece. Both the
Malibu goals were by senior
forward Sara Cosentino.
Malibu had its chances,
nearly scoring on a header
with about five minutes to go,
but were unable to capitalize.
Tied 2-2 the game went
to overtime, where again both
teams were stymied.
In the second overtime, Santa
Paula broke the tie, ending
the game with a walk-off goal.
Senior forward Sara Cosentino had each of the Sharks’ two goals Friday, Jan. 19, at home. Suzy Demeter/22nd Century Media
