Top 10 Ways To Be A Good Neighbor
We are so very lucky to live in Nottingham Country. Our neighborhood
has a great aesthetic due to the wide variety of architecture of our homes
and we also have great trees, a wonderful bayou trail and pretty easy
access to the freeway (ok, maybe not during traffic times). Plus, our
people are really top notch.
So all of this got us to thinking - what makes a good neighbor? Here is our
list of the top 10 ways to be a great neighbor:
1. Reach out. So many of us are reluctant to do this these days, but we
shouldn’t be. Invite a neighbor to dinner one night or even for something
as simple as coffee or tea. Walking is also an excellent idea. Extending an
invitation is a great way to learn a little more about the people you’ve
been waving to for the last umpteen years.
2. Have a block party. It sounds daunting at first, but it really isn’t. If
you just get together with a couple of neighbors and each takes an
assignment, it will come together with ease. One section of Dominion has
block parties about once a year and they are always very well-received.
Kids love them too!
3. Attend community events. The NC Board hosts multiple events
throughout the year and folks really enjoy them. It’s a great way to meet
new people and who doesn’t love free food? Plus, Board members are
usually in attendance, so you can bend their ears on your topic of choice.
4. Support our young people. There are plenty of Nottingham teens who
work as babysitters or pet sitters and some even provide lawn service.
Supporting these kids is a great way to boost their self-esteem. A list of
teens who offer such services is featured in every issue of this newsletter.
5. Be mindful of the elderly. Many of the older people who live in our
community don’t have family nearby, so please make an effort to be
mindful of them.
6. Go above and beyond. Surprise a neighbor with a simple act of
kindness - a bottle of wine or maybe rake his leaves one day. Spreading
goodwill is always a very rewarding endeavor.
7. Keep an eye out. Our neighborhood is very safe, but that doesn’t mean
it’s immune to crime. Please report suspicious activity to our constables
at 281-463-6666.
8. Welcome the new folks. You don’t have to make Aunt Sally’s favorite
cookie recipe, but at least make the time to say hello and welcome
newcomers to our neighborhood.
9. Be open to discussion. Neighbors don’t always agree on everything,
but please keep an open mind when there is a disagreement. You can’t
pick your family and you can’t pick your neighbors, but since you have to
live next door to them, keeping the peace is a wise idea.
10. Be considerate. It’s hard not to sound like your mother when talking
about these issues, but being considerate is at the core of being a good
neighbor. It means maintaining your lawn, driving at a reasonable speed,
not making noise at ungodly hours, teaching your kids to be respectful,
being thoughtful about where you park and for goodness’ sake not letting
your dog bark every day at 4 AM (dogs are our number one complaint).
We want to thank all of you for your efforts in making this a great place
to live and we look forward to meeting you at a community event soon.
