Tsubasa Nisbet, Burnside High School, Charlotte Whittaker, St Andrew’s College, Amiee Book, Middleton Grange, and Lauryn Hippolite, Middleton Grange, have been named in the 12-strong squad, making Canterbury the most represented region in the country. They will look to finish in the top two to qualify for the FIBA Asia agegroup championships. The team will then have to finish in the top four in that tournament to qualify for the under-19 FIBA World Cup. HAMBLETT BACK TO US Promising footballer Johanna Hamblett, 21, will join Colorado College for the upcoming United States college season after a brief return to Christchurch to play for Cashmere Technical. The midfielder spent last year at Mississippi State University, where she started in 18 games. Before moving to the US, she was part of the Mainland Pride team which won the National Women’s League in 2013 and 2014. Hamblett is expected to debut for Colorado in August. Teacher, student – teammates Classroom to the football pitch • By Gordon Findlater ON MOST days Mikaele Rabuka knows Jacob Allen as Mr Allen – but on Saturday he was his partner in midfield. Rabuka, 15, made his first team debut off the bench during Ferrymead Bays 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Western in the English Cup semi-final. When the Fijian entered the field with 15min left in normal time, a familiar face welcomed him on the pitch. He slotted in next to Allen in midfield, one of his teachers and football coach at St Thomas’ of Canterbury College. “I was pretty nervous before the game, and to be honest, I didn’t think I would get to play because I started on the bench and we were losing,” said Rabuka. On the eve of the semi-final, Rabuka received a message from Allen asking if he would be keen on a run with the first team. Not knowing too much about Rabuka, he called Allen who had nothing but praise for the teenager. “Our coach Danny said after the game that (Rabuka) was referring to me as Mr Allen while he was on the bench. I was actually hoping he’d call me sir every time he passed me the ball,” Allen joked. “It was a strange experience at first, but he deserved to be there. He’s a quality young player.” When Rabuka entered the game, Bays trailed 0-2 before two late goals forced the match into extra-time. “He ended up on the wing in extra-time and even managed to make a couple of guys look silly which was great,” said Allen. The game went to penalties, with both teacher and student managing to avoid a walk to the penalty spot. “The coach asked me if I wanted to take one but I wasn’t really keen,” said Rabuka. With some first team regulars expected back this week, Rabuka may not get to play much of a part in Bays’ push for the Mainland Premier League and English Cup titles. At just 15, though, there’s no doubt he can become a regular in time. Rabuka and Allen now turn their attention to the St Thomas team and their bid to push for a play-off spot in the Connetics Premier 1st XI competition and a spot at the national schools tournament in September.

Brown was defensive coach for the successful New Zealand side which demolished England 64- 17 in the final of World Rugby’s Under-20 Championship. While he was helping the ‘Baby Blacks’ hone their defensive strategies, there were some changes back home in Dunedin. Highlanders assistant coach Scott McLeod was named as the defence coach for the All Blacks and will leave the Dunedinbased franchise at the end of the season. With Cory’s brother, Highlanders head coach Tony Brown, also leaving the Highlanders at the end of the season, there are vacancies. Aaron Mauger or Mark Hammett will take over as the new head coach, but the team will need a defensive guru. Highlanders scrum coach Clarke Dermody and skills coach Jon Preston are in the mix. But Cory Brown is developing an impressive resume. But I’ll think about it and see if I will put my name in the hat or not.’’ Brown said, as a player, he wanted to get to the highest level and ‘’as a coach I’m exactly the same’’. ‘’Whether I’m ready, I’m not too sure. That is not up to me.’’ Brown’s stint with the New Zealand under-20 side has certainly helped enhanced his reputation and value as a coach.
