Week 24 - Monday 22nd January to Friday 26th January
Dear Parents, Guardians, Friends and Family,
The health of our students is something we consider in everything we do here at Garden
International School, Bangkok. This week Bangkok suffered unusually high levels of air
pollution. I’d like to thank parents for their support of our decision to postpone the Primary
and Secondary sports day because of the air pollution issue. We have a robust system in
place for such incidents and a series of planned responses should high levels of air
pollution return.
One way we can all help to make our school environment better is to ensure that car
engines are turned off when on school property. I’ve asked our Security and Support staff
to enforce this and I am sure everyone in our community can see the benefits.
Foundation Open Morning
On Wednesday the Foundation Stage had an Open Morning. It was fantastic to see so
many parents attend and we hope they enjoyed finding out more about how their children
learn with us.
We really do believe that; ‘Play is the highest form of research’ - Albert Einstein.
Year 2 Graphs and Measuring
In Maths this week, we learned about how to use different graphs. Today, we used a block
graph to show, "how fast students can change their shoes in under 30 seconds." They
created their own block graph templates and then coloured in how to represent it using
data. We also created a scale model of the Solar System this week. We measured out
distances from the Sun (orange basketball in the distance) and used toilet paper squares
to roll out the true size of how far away from the star they are. A lot of fun!
Year 5 Critical Thinking & Persuasion Techniques
This week, Year 5 have been busy learning how to write balanced arguments and justify
their opinions. After discussing and analysing persuasive language, they shared their
feelings on keeping animals in zoos and whether children should get homework. The week
ended with a game of Room 101, where children had to write persuasively about
something that annoyed them and they would like to banish forever. Slow wi-fi was
particularly popular! Five finalists were chosen for their persuasive skills and the class got
to vote for who or what should be put into Room 101. It was a close count but in the end
Year 5 were persuaded to vote for Bradley's choice for Room 101 - Donald Trump!
Secondary French
Year 8 were working on a mystery lesson to practice Food and Drink vocabulary in French,
as well as developing thinking and teamwork skills. After solving the problem, "What did
poison the Girard Family?", they did a little performance to demonstrate what they had
learned.
Reception Are All Superheroes
In reception this week we have been continuing with our superhero focus. We have been
completing superhero challenges as well as reading to friends, looking at story maps and
the retelling story of Eliot Midnight Superhero. We have also been busy making our own
individual changes to the story too.
Year 9 Board Game Project
In ADT, Year 9 students were previously set the challenge of designing and making their
own board game for an intended client. This week they peer assessed and tested each
other's final products to highlight where any improvements could be made.
