10 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 31 January, 2018 AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS Golden Girl Betty earns highest accolade - Companion of Order of Australia (AC) AUSTRALIA’S golden girl of athletics Betty Cuthbert heads an impressive batch of local recipients in the Australia Day 2018 Honours List. The Ermington ash, who died last year aged 79, was made a Companion of the Order of Australia - a posthumous accolade for eminent service to the sport of athletics as a fourfold Olympic champion and as a role model, fundraiser andadvocatefor research into a cure for multiple sclerosis. Cuthbert’s story will continue to inspire Australian athletes for generations to come. She attended Ermington Public School as a youngster and went on to taste Olympic glory and become one of the greatest sprinters of all time. The legendary Cuthbert remains the only athlete in history to win Olympic gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. Raised in Ermington, she first sprinted into the nation’s hearts as a fresh faced 18-year-old at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, where she set an Olympic record in the 100m and a world record in the 200m to win both events. The teen sensation claimed a third gold medal running the final leg in the 4x100m relay, again in a world record time. At the Melbourne Olympics, Cuthbert won every sprint medal available to women and was the first Australian to win three gold medals at one Games, earning her the nickname of Australia’s “golden girl”. Injury would rob her of the chance to defend her titles at the 1960 Rome Games but she returned at Tokyo in 1964 to win her fourth gold medal, this time in the 400m which was to be the final race of her career. Cuthbert was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1965; was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Honours for sporting legends Gould and Clark OLYMPIC swimming champion Shane Gould has reeie a for her sigifiat serie to swimming and to water safety programs in developing countries. Gould gained international stardom as a 15 year old at the 1972 Munich Olympics when she won three gold medals and set world records in the 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle while under the coaching of Forbes and Ursula Carlile at Ryde Swimming Pool. She also grabbed a silver Fame in 1994; named an Australian National Treasure in 1998 and entered the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame in 2000. She was also the first Australian inducted into the International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame when it was founded in 2012, alongside legends such as Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis. In 1969 she discovered she had multiple sclerosis and would battle the condition for the rest of her life. In 2000, she was one of the final bearers to hand the Olympic torch to Cathy Freeman before she lit the ame at the Sydney Games. medal in the 800m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle. Gould simultaneously held all freestyle world records from 100 to 1500 metres from December 12, 1971 to September 1, 1972 - an incredible achievement for one so young. FORMER Gladesville resident and Australian womens cricket captain Belinda Clark was named an Ocer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to cricket. Clark, who was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 1997, led Australia to two World Cup triumphs in 1997 and 2005 and was the first and only person to score a double century (229 not out) in a women’s one day international. A prolific scoring batsman, Clark played 15 Tests, 118 ODIs and one Twenty20 for Australia, averaging more than 45 in the Test and one-day arena, and is Australia’s leading run scorer in the 50-over game. Belinda, who starred for Balmain Cricket Club, has proved a fine ambassador for the sport - she has been a member of the ICC Women’s Committee for more than a decade and continues to be a key inuencer in the game as Cricket Australia’s Head of Junior Cricket. Cuthbert, Gould and Clark join a distinguished crop of Australian female sporting icons recognised in the Australia Day Honours list. Others include squash great Heather McKay and netball legend Liz Ellis (AO); tennis queen Evonne Goolagong-Cawley (AC); Olympic swimming gold medallist Susie O’Neill, basketball dynamo Michelle Timms, golfing legends Karrie Webb and Jan Stephenson and Hockeyroos’ Olympic gold medalwinning captain Rechelle Hawkes (AM). $10 TICKETS* Big movies for small prices in Top Ryde *Online booking fee applies.
