18 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 31 January, 2018 AUSTRALIA DAY 2018 AT RYDE COUNCIL CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY Fifty Ryde residents from 20 countries received Australian citizenship at Ryde’s Australia Day ceremony in North Ryde School of Arts Community Hall and the Salvation Army Community Home Team Leader Nathan Moulds was named Citizen of the Year and State Emergency Services volunteer Rhett Prado Young Citizen of the Year. Nathan Moulds has fought hard for elderly and other residents - recently evicted from North Ryde’s Ivanhoe housing estate to make way for a high rise development - and his award speech praised them for being “courageous and amazing” neighbours at the Estate. Rhett Prado spoke of his childhood memories of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake and how the sacrifice o Newcastles emergency workers inspired him to join the SES. City of Ryde Australia Day Ambassador Sonia Gandhi spoke about her early years as a BP service station attendant and spice shop manager after she came to Australia from India. Australia Day ceremony guests also heard Mayor Jerome Laxale describe The City of Ryde as “a community of friendship, hard work and honesty” while Bennelong MP John Alexander paid tribute to local Aboriginal leader Bennelong, who befriended the First Fleet. In a surprise announcement, Ryde MP Victor Dominello said a recent DNA test revealed that he is not as “Italo-Australian” as he thought he was. “I am only three quarters Italian and I am twelve per cent Armenian,” he said. Aboriginal elder Uncle Greg spoke about Australia’s indigenous heritage while City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale congratulated Australia Day award nominees Rhett Prado, Nathan Moulds, Julie Hill, Joanne Taranto and Corina Seeto. Alexander Chorley was represented by his father. RYDE LAC Inspector Pat Sharkey took the salute alongside councillors while 50 new citizens from 20 countries pledged their allegiance to Australia. Wednesday 31 January, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 19 AUSTRALIA DAY 2018 at HUNTERS HILL TOWN HALL Hunters Hill residents celebrated Australia Day in the Town Hall with Australia Day Ambassador Catherine Saxelby when Jenny Nylund was announced Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year 2018, pictured left. Benjamin Jones of Hunters Hill High School was named Young Citizen of the Year while Alanna Fisher was awarded Sportsperson of the Year. Detail see Page 6. New Citizens Welcomed Five Hunters Hill residents were welcomed as new citizens at a citizenship ceremony performed by Mayor Mark Bennett.
