Primary Times FEBRUARY HALF TERM 2018 | www.primarytimes.co.uk/cardiff
Hello Readers!
Welcome to 2018 and the latest issue of Primary Times.
We hope you’ve had a wonderful start to the New Year.
The temptation at this time of year is to stay indoors, find
something entertaining on the TV and relax on the sofa under a
blanket until the weather starts to turn distinctly more summery.
Whilst this might sound like a good plan (and it does) there’s
always plenty to see and do once you venture from the sofa
and out of the front door.
In our What’s On Guide you’ll find plenty of ideas for fun days
out and if you fancy swapping your sofa for a comfy seat
for a while, then you could always head to the theatre.
You’ll find the best shows in your area in the Box Office section.
Whether you fancy splashing about at Cardiff International
Pool, taking a romantic stroll at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm or catching
a show at the theatre …there are loads of opportunities for
memorable days out!
Don’t forget to enter our competitions, you could win tickets to
see Monstersaurus at St David’s Hall, Disney On Ice, The Little
Mix Experience AND Tiddler and Other Tales! You can also
check our website to find more great competitions.
Our next issue will be full of the joys of Spring, but until then,
here’s to a wonderful 2018!
Nathan Walker, Sales Director at CPS Homes, offers his experienced insight into
what you need to know before you accept an offer of sale on your home. Offers are
ultimately everyone’s goal, but before you get swept away with the excitement of
that full asking price offer, ensure you know the exact circumstances of your buyer.
• Long property chains. As chains grow in buyers and sellers, so too grows the
risk of collapse. A lower offer from a cash or small chain buyer can sometimes be a
better long term choice. • Cash-buyer? A term frequently misused by buyers who
actually mean income from an impending sale. Ensure any cash offers are ‘money
in the bank’ offers. • Be a savvy vendor. Good agents will always qualify offers
presented to you, but fact finding as a vendor is just good sense. • Offers just below
the asking price are often too easily dismissed. With investigation you can often
add value with an otherwise unseen benefit for the buyer and extra cash for the
vendor, for instance, white goods. CPS Homes offer free valuations.
Piano and voice lessons
Teaching from my home in Lakeside, my piano and voice
lessons emphasise a breadth and depth of learning
where each student gains musical knowledge in a
relaxed, positive atmosphere. Lessons focus on the
students’ aims, whether pursuing ABRSM grades or their
choice of music. With eight years of teaching experience,
I graduated in 2015 from Cardiff University with a BMus
and in 2017 with a Masters in Performance. A member
of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, I accompany
and perform regularly. The first lesson is a free
WEAR A HAT DAY 2018
Please get involved in Wear A Hat Day on Thursday 29th March 2018 (or any day in
March) to help raise funds for research into brain tumours. This devastating disease
kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of
the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours.
During Wear A Hat Day 2017, individuals, families, schools and other organisations
all came together and raised over £300,000 to fund our research.
Together we can reach our target of £600,000 – enough to fund a team of
researchers for a year. Register online today: www.wearahatday.org
Thank you for helping to fund the fight.
INTERNET SAFETY
[
How to set up your child’s new
device safely in the New Year
In the run up to Christmas 35%
of parents revealed that they
were planning on giving their
child a tech present. With so
much new technology in the
hands of children, it has never
been more important to ensure
children are staying safe whilst
using their new technology.
New research from EE found while many
parents do discuss online safety with their
children regularly, 40% do not consider online
safety when making tech purchases for their
children and 25% have never used parental
controls.
In an ideal world we should all have tried out
any new gadgets and familiarised ourselves with
privacy settings - as checking gives us a
chance to change default usernames and
passwords to stronger alternatives. This also
provides an opportunity to check any remote
viewing options on those devices and toys that
sport a camera.
However, as this research proves, the reality
is that it is often the last thing on the minds
of parents.
If as a parent you’ve missed the initial set-up it’s
not too late to put things right to ensure as your
child is happily playing with their new tech and
stay safe whist using it.
Research by Internet Matters shows that the
average age a child is given a smartphone is
now ten-years-old, so firstly you need to check
the basic safety settings are set up and active.
• Review their apps to make sure they are age
appropriate and privacy settings are on.
• Turn on Google ‘Safe Search’ and ‘Restricted
Mode’ on YouTube to help screen out
inappropriate content
• Check they’re connected safely – set parental
controls on your broadband and apply a
content lock on their mobile network.
• Disable location services so your child doesn’t
unintentionally share their location with others.
• Set up password control or disable in-app
purchasing so big bills are not run up
accidentally.
• If your child is using social networking
apps check their profile and privacy settings,
making sure they are not sharing personal
or private information with people they do
not know.
But nothing is as important as having regular
conversations with your children and ensuring
they know the five rules that will keep them safe;
• Always keep your phone safe and
secured with a PIN
• Don’t answer calls from numbers you
don’t recognise
• Don’t give your number to strangers
• Never share personal information online
• Never send pictures to people you
don’t know
Visit www.internetmatters.org for more
information and advice on how to keep
your children safe online.
