Loud Talk 1 - The Feast SM Manila

LOUD
I love listening to loud music. I
guess I got that innate musicality
in me so whenever a favorite song
comes up, I had to turn up the
volume in order to hear and feel
the drum beat, the bass line and
the rhythm. And during those
moments, I feel that I’m in my own
world where no one can intrude or
disturb me.
One day, I was practicing
my drums skills using my highly
sophisticated drum set which is
composed of plastic chairs and
pillows, I got my head phones and
cranked up the volume to max! As
I was hitting my snare aka pillow,
I didn’t notice that my mom was
already at my side, speaking to me.
The moment she realized that I was
not listening, she poked my arm to
get my attention and when our eyes
met, she gave me the “look” which
meant that I need to stop what I am
doing or else I will not like what will
happen next. I immediately lowered
down the volume and listened to
what my mom was saying.
My dear friends, we are living
in a LOUD world. Parents/older
people tend to complain about
the gap that they have with the
younger generation aka millenials/
digital natives. Children respond
by saying that they are being
misunderstood. Both generations
are clouded with the noise of
misconception about each other.
I believe that in order to foster a
harmonious relationship across
generations, one must lower down
the volume of the headphones
that we are wearing. In order to
understand one another, both must
learn to tone down and listen. Tone
down and give time. Tone down
and love.
We will be talking more about
generational differences and
acceptance in our brand new series
entitled LOUD and I am excited to
share all about it with all of you.

As a Pediatric and Adolescent
Gynecologist, I have centennials
(aged 19 years or younger) as
patients. As a Leader in the Feast
SM Manila, I have centennials
as servants and attendees. As
a Generation X Uncle, I have a
centennial niece. And in all of
my dealings with these young
people, I am often called “old
fashioned”, “strict” and “too
conservative”.
But in order for me to be an
effective doctor, leader and uncle
to centennials, I have to get to
know them in a deepr way. Same
goes for millennials!
PRAISEcription: I need one
tablet of Patience in the morning,
1 teaspoon of Understanding in
the afternoon and an injection of
Restraint in the evening.

ABUNDANCE

GEN GAP!
Have you ever seen two
persons screaming at each other
but no one is listening? It’s
insane. But this is the reason
there’s such a thing as a GEN
GAP. The noise is simply too
loud. The old and the young are
not listening to each other.
Is there a clash within your
family? If you don’t heal the gen
gap now, over time, the fence
will grow taller and thicker. With
barbed wire! If that happens,
you’ll miss out on God’s huge
blessings for your life. Because
God wants to bless you across
this generational divide.
To do that, you need to a lot of
humility. Respect. Kindness.
In this series, I’m praying for
your family. May this powerful
series, LOUD heal hurts between
you and the “other” generation.
May your love be the loudest
thing in your relationship.

FULLNESS TALK 3: SACRED AND SECULAR
Closer to Jesus, Tougher Fight, Stronger Faith
Fr. Paolo Pirlo shared three words that
God gave us in celebration of the Feast of
the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple:
dove, candle, and a sword.
“Three words for the feast of today. This
is the Feast of the Candelora – Presentation
of Jesus in the temple. Three words: Dove,
Candles, Sword,” he said during his homily
in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at
The Feast SM Manila last Friday at SM City
Cinema 4.
As the doves were used as an offering
for the life of Jesus during His presentation,
Fr. Paolo said that we must also offer back
our lives to God as it is a gift that we have
received from Him.
The candles, according to Fr. Paolo,
represent our faith in Jesus. Jesus is the
light of the world and in our journey thus,
without Him, everything that we do is in total
darkness.
“Simeon said to Mary, ‘This child is like a
sword splitting those who will be saved and
those will be done, those who will be ruined
and those who will rise again and this sword
will pierce your heart.’ Totoo naman yun,
the closer we go to Jesus, the harder we
have to fight against the devil,” he said as he
explained that it is a never-ending fight with
the devil that is why we need to be brave as
we get closer to Jesus.
“It’s a big test of our faith. It’s a day
of abstinence – abstinence from meat and
abstinence from flesh,” the priest presider
added as he mentioned that the first fight
will happen on Valentine’s Day as it also
happens to be Ash Wednesday.
Jesus Tore the Veil and Made a Way

The Feast SM Manila leaders reminded
everyone last Friday that we should not
divide what God has not divided for He has
actually sanctified even the ordinary only so
that He would not be set apart from us.
“When Jesus tore the veil, He is actually
telling us that everything is sacred. When
Jesus became man like us, He sanctified us
being ‘man.’ Ginawang banal ni Hesus ang
lahat ng aspeto ng ating pagiging tao — the
secular in our lives, all the secular things we
do, all the secular things we have, they are
sanctified,” said Dr. Ryan Capitulo during
The Feast SM Manila’s M.D. Session for the
Talk 3: Sacred and Secular of the series
entitled, Fullness: How to Begin with the
“AND” in Mind at SM City Manila Cinema 4.
As described in Matthew 27: 50-51, the
M.D. session preacher explained how the
veil represented the separation of man and
God. He said that it was through the death
of Jesus on the cross that God became
connected to man, also making Him present
everywhere.
“The veil was torn apart dahil ayaw ng
Diyos na nalalayo sa’yo, dahil ayaw ng Diyos
na may namamagitan sa inyo. Ayaw Niyang
may humahadlang sa pagmamahal Niya
sa’yo,” the first and second session preacher
Bro. Philip Sumera further stated.
He explained that one of the most usual
things which shows how we tend to separate
what God doesn’t want to be set apart is
when we love Him without having to love
our neighbors as well. According to Bro. Lep,
loving God and loving our neighbor are two
inseparable greatest commandments, thus
one can’t exist without the other.
As the first and second session Feast
leader mentioned that having God in the
ordinary sanctifies everything and makes
Him present everywhere, Doc Ryan, on the
other hand, encouraged everyone that, while
God is everywhere, we must offer everything
we do as a form of worship for Him.

Where Do Broken Hearts Go?
To Sagada?
The most popular of all heartbreaks
come from break-ups, but let me speak for
our single since birth brothers and sisters
here that heartbreaks can also come from
anything – unrequited love, failing an exam,
rejection from a dream job or school at
marami pang iba.
Sobrang common na ang heartaches
sa ating journey patungo kay “the one”.
Sa sobrang common, manhid na siguro
yung iba sa atin sa sakit na dulot nito, but
I know that heartaches and letting go will
always be painful lalo na kung sanay ka na
sa kanya.
But friends, #FriendlyReminder lang:
Don’t let that pain be our comfort zone –
move on, move on din.
We had the chance to talk with one of
our Feast leaders, Kuya Lep (Sumera) and
his fianceé, Ate Saly (Go) kaya let us share
their views about heartbreak and letting go
na tatagos talaga.
Letting Go is Not An Easy Task
It will never be an easy task, but we
must learn to let go in order for us to grow.
We owe that much to ourselves – to always
change for the better, to move forward and
grow.
“Dapat hindi nagkakaroon ng
hindrance ang sarili mo for you to grow,
dahil walang ibang gustong gawin ang
Diyos kundi biyayaan ka, but because
of the hindrances na nangyayari,
yung growth na gusto ng Diyos, hindi
mangyayari yun.” – Kuya Lep
When should we really let go? Simple –
when we’re not growing anymore. How do
we know if we’ve stopped growing?
“Pag stuck ka na.,. Parang di ka
makakagalaw on your own kapag di
niya nabigyan ng approval. Umiikot
yung mundo mo sa kanya. That’s
unhealthy relationship.” – Ate Saly
“Be reminded na tao ka, hindi ka
mundo. Dapat hindi ka ginagawang
mundo.” – Kuya Lep
Another #FriendlyReminder: Huwag
ka ma-stuck kakaayos ng isang bagay na
malabo nang maayos. Fixing it the first
time is okay, but sometimes, it is better to
let go and let God fix things.
Every Heartbreak is a Learning
Experience.
The pain that every heartache brings is
just unbearable but sometimes, all we need
to do is to look past that and look at all the
lessons we learned from it. Ang sabi nga ni
Kuya Lep:
“I always call all my previous
relationships learning experiences...
I would like to think that they’re still
blessings kasi sabi ko, sa lahat ng
relationship ko, may natutunan ako at
kailangan ko pagdaanan lahat ng sakit
na iyon sa previous relationships ko.
Why? In order for me to know more, to
be stronger, to be better, kasi para pag
dumating na yung right person, ready
na ako.
Choose to look at the brighter side – let
this experience be your breakthrough and
your stepping stone towards version 2.0
(or version 3.0 or 4.0. basta better version
of yourself than before) because hey, if
I may just quote Kelly Clarkson, “What
doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”!
God is Here. Let Him Complete Your
Broken Heart
“God taught me to be complete first
sa pagmamahal Niya.” – Ate Saly
“No person could complete you,
except God. It is only God.” – Kuya Lep
Heartbreaks are tough. There would
be times when you will feel alone as the
world spins madly, while you sit still at a
your little corner, trying to fix what’s left of
your broken heart. But remember: You are
not alone. Someone up there will always
be willing to stop His world just to listen to
you and make you whole again.
Aayusin ka Niya. My dear friend, let
Him complete you – let God mend your
broken heart. (cue: “Hayaan mo si Lord,
Hayaan mo si Lord ang sumagip sa’yo di
ba?”)
Dear Anak,
Hindi man naging ‘kayo’ nung taong
dahilan ng heartaches mo, tandaan
mo, forever, merong ‘tayo’. Walang
rejection, pagkabagsak, o pagkakamali
could ever change my love for you. The
world may upset and leave you, but I
never will. Promise ‘yan, ‘Nak. Period.
No erase.
I’m always here … waiting for you.
