Economic Cooperation Organization: Is ECO
Another Pipe Dream Or Formidable Alliance!?
ECO whose sessions are conducted here and
there within its member countries can continue
to remain a slogan raising formal and ceremonial
alliance of regional countries like another pipe
dream or ECO can wake up and emerge as a formidable
free and independent organization with its members,
especially two key members Iran and Pakistan.
REVOLUTIONARY Iran with relatively more free
and independent rulers confronting big powers’ unjust
policies or actions can team up with Pakistan as an only
nuclear power state in Islamic world, together advancing
a revolutionary ideology from servitude towards
freedom, and growing with other ECO members in
cooperation with other regional and international
Muslim alliances, to emerge as a united dominating and
determining force which has the guts, unity and strength
to reasonably resist and block anti-Muslim plots and
economic down sliding of non-Muslim powers, within
a logical range and extent and within their own capabilities
and possibilities.
WITH Turkey and other members, ECO may weigh
heavier in though smaller regional scale, that can be
combined with revival of another dormant Non-Aligned
Movement or NAM, especially in dealing with new US
President Donald Trump and his ambitious all-
American and all-US conscious administration which is
of course best for America and Americans.
RATHER than being reactionary after unjustly dominant
economic and financial dictations by big foreign
powers, a new ECO framework and action line may
become determining and conditional for others to follow
as this organizational unity can muster.
UNDER adverse alien actions, ECO may duly and
especially consider all diplomatic, economic and military
aspects, alien policies and actions towards Muslim
world and foreign refugees, and formulate fateful organizational
strategy that may lessen those pressures and
burdens on majority of Muslim nationals within ECO
regions.
FIRST founded by its main members Iran, Pakistan
and Turkey as formerly Regional Cooperation
Development or RCD during Iran’s imperial dynasty, it
was subsequently dissolved after 1979 Islamic
Revolution. But it later surfaced as Economic
Cooperation Organization or ECO with planned expansion
and inclusion of more regional countries like
Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics.
NEW Mideast scenario and recent political indications
hold some new considerations to be thoughtful and
practical about.
POWER shifting process globally witnessed some
drifting away of allies such as Turkey from US stronghold
after Ankara alleged Obama administration was
behind an anti-Erdogan coup d’etat in Turkey.
ON verge of new American revival turning towards
a rightful reawakening of United States of America,
President Donald Trump is naturally, mostly and reasonably
for “America First”, “Americans First” and for
Americans to “Make American Great Again”.
Secondary considerations are in offing for non-
Americans, immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers
from non-American soil.
ECONOMIC Cooperation Organization or ECO
may well effort influencing Gulf Cooperation Council
or GCC and Islamic Conference Organization or ICO
for a reasonable and balanced response favorable to
Muslim majorities in Islamic bloc that may match and
benefit both Muslims world as well as US awakening
for better survival with rights of all nations on both the
By Eduardo Nilson
Human nutrition is of increasing importance
to science. Of course, centuries of scientific
research have been devoted to ensuring that
enough food is produced for growing populations.
But with obesity and diet-related diseases on the
rise, and hunger and malnutrition affecting more
people than ever before, scientists are focusing not
only on how to feed the planet, but on what to feed
it.
As a biologist, I look at foods and diets from an
evolutionary perspective. Put simply, foods evolve
in concert with the organisms that consume them.
Consider the humble apple. By itself, the fruit's fructose
isn't particularly healthy, and when eaten in
large quantities, it increases the risk of diabetes,
heart disease, and other non-communicable diseases.
But when the fruit's sugars are digested along with
its fibres, absorption of fructose in the body slows,
and the fruit is metabolically healthier.
Through this mechanism, the apple - like most
fruits and vegetables - becomes a more perfect food.
The same logic applies to our diets. Throughout
history, foods have been created and altered by combining
flavours, colours, and nutritional values,
while diets have matured differently within families,
cultures, and communities. But, for the most part,
our ancestors chose foods for their health outcomes.
Unhealthy diets were generally short-lived because
of the poor results.
Today, however, bad diets seem to have more
sides honored, preserved and protected at least in the
wake of economy related problems, issues and cooperation.
FOREMOST challenge in economy is for ECO
members Iran and Pakistan to complete decadesdelayed
pipeline construction within Pakistan halted
due to US-led anti-Iran world boycott against supply of
Iranian gas to energy starved Pakistan. Pakistan’s considerable
industries were closed and relocated with capital
flight outside Pakistan in the wake of load shedding
without sufficient gas, electricity, petrol and other energy
supplies in past many decades. That shortcoming
inflicted losses of billions annually for several decades
and remained irrecoverable and beyond recompense.
JOINT and free decisions of ECO members and
Muslim countries with joint strategy for unhindered
economic cooperation among themselves as a suitable
response with self-reliance and self-dependence may
place Muslim interests before non-Muslim world. Such
a joint strategy is compulsory, especially in relation to a
Trump roundabout on US reawakening which is indeed
a good tide for well-deserved American nation and its
dreams. So too Islamic world has its own dreams to
realize and achieve. But that is possible only if and
when Pakistan and other Muslim countries rebel against
servitude and chose freedom with respect to their own
rights as well as rights of all other nations on earth.
Despite world media’s often cruel and initial onslaught
against present American administration, US President
may of course be sane enough to agree on it.
IF Pakistan had worked on Iran-Pakistan gas
pipeline, its nation would not have lagged behind in
progress but may have advanced considerably, as
Iranian gas would have made many dying industries
come to life in Pakistan. More importantly, 200 million
nation of Pakistan would not have suffered unbearable
pain and agony in load shedding without electricity for
8 to 16 hours a day. Most economic activity on
machines, instruments and equipment run on electricity
remained idle, killing those industrial and business
investments, man-hours, income and production. Iran
which supplies electricity to around a dozen countries
had proposed increasing Iran’s quite inexpensive electricity
supply by a few thousand mega-watts for
Pakistan. But issue of kickbacks that Islamic governance
in Iran does not permit was reportedly and
allegedly a big problem for Pakistani rulers. These ECO
members can have it resolved by sacrificing personal
benefits for the sake of national and regional good of
concerned ECO nations.
CRUX of the matter is: If Pakistan or Muslim world
had not boycotted or had not complied partially or fully,
directly or indirectly with US, UN, EU and world sanctions
on dealings and trade with Iran, but had instead
come up with their own Iran-led free and independent
policy and action for cooperation by and between all
Muslim countries to reduce and defeat non-Muslim
boycott of any Muslim country, or at least make it partially
or fully ineffective, Muslim world would live a
free and independent life, not in chains like now, just
because they did not unite and did not jointly act and
hence remained impotent in their own countries as big
prisons of big powers.
WITH joint decisions, policies and actions on ECO
regional level extended to GCC and then ICO levels,
with Iran and Pakistan on the forefront of fight for freedom
and independence, self-reliance and self- dependence
of Muslim world, it’s better to change all that now
from servitude to freedom in all fields.
OPINION
Forget fitness fads, let's learn to eat right
With lifestyle diseases, focus is not on how to feed the planet, but on what to feed it
staying power. Natural and raw foods are being
replaced by ready-to-eat meals and processed foods.
This trend toward microwaveable pre-packaged convenience
has led to the erosion of regionally specific
diets and created a more homogeneous - and
unhealthy - globalised menu, one associated with
obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and shortened lives.
Part of this shift is unavoidable; the way foods are
produced, purchased, and consumed has much to do
with how and where we live. In many countries, the
combination of larger, denser urban areas and rapidly-aging
populations has forced changes to food
manufacturing and distribution systems.
Unfortunately, many of these adjustments have had
a negative impact.
Global efforts are underway to help humanity eat
better. The United Nations has declared 2016-2025
the "Decade of Action on Nutrition," and the UN's
Sustainable Development Goals encourage comprehensive
strategies for improving health, eliminating
hunger, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
These campaigns have come amid growing recognition
within the private sector that addressing nutritional
shortfalls can be good for business. For example,
through local farmers' collectives and regional
food networks, smallholder innovators are attempting
to restore variation to how we eat. But global
summits and regional commitments are only part of
the solution. If the world's dietary devolution is to be
corrected, at least three additional measures are
urgently needed.
SRINAGAR: Dukhtaran
-e-Millat (DeM) has said
that Kashmir dispute is the
unfinished agenda of the
Partition Plan, which was
based on two-nation theory.
According to KMS, the
DeM Chairperson Aasiya
Andrabi while addressing
activists and members during
a seminar at her Soura
residence in Srinagar said,
“There is no skepticism in it
that we want to be with
Pakistan.”
The seminar was organised
on the completion of 25
years in illegal detention by
Muslim Deeni Mahaz
(MDM) President, Dr
Muhammad Qasim
Fakhtoo, who is also her
husband.
“Kashmir dispute came
into existence because of
two-nation theory and it
remains to be the unfinished
agenda of the Partition
Plan,” Aasiya Andrabi
added.
Terming the detention of
Dr Fakhtoo as political
vendetta, she said he is being
put behind the bars because
of his political ideology. “It
is difficult for a woman to
spend her life without her
husband. No one except a
woman would understand
it,” Aasiya Andrabi said and
added that Dr Fakhtoo was
the only prisoner to have
completed 25 years in prison
since 1931.
The Chairperson of
Kashmir Tehreek
Khawateen, Zamruda
Habib, in her address
stressed the need to understand
Dr Fakhtoo beyond
the perspective of DeM and
According to KMS,
Syed Ali Gilani in a statement
coercive measures, killings,
